As one of the posters below mentions, get that thyroid checked it. I speak from personal experience - it slowed my thought processes down, increased my impulsivity and irritability, made me sad, unable to concentrate or make decisions, my hair got coarse, my skin got dry, and I could barely speak in complete sentences. People looked at me as if I were cognitively challenged and I knew something was wrong - my TSH was off the charts.

Get him to a doctor STAT. None of what you are describing is normal at any age.
