Anyone who knows difference between type 1 and 2 diabetes?

Posted By: Marilyn on 2009-04-08

My husband was diagnosed with diabetes about 4 years ago, never before,  in his 50s. I thought being as not diagnosed in childhood this was type 2. Talking with my dermatologist this morning and saying diabetes of his not due to obesity and runs in his family, she told me then he has type 1. This is a little worrisome for me as I have heard type 1 is worse than 2. Anyone have any information on this?

Okay, I've been feeling really weird the past couple of days (yes, that's an official medical term; it's right up there with icky, which I will be using later).  The first time, it felt like my blood sugar was too low, but that didn't make sense since I had just eaten a sausage 'n' mushroom omelet.  Went to lay down, and kept waking up feeling like I was going to pass out.  Make any sense?  Had that horrible feeling off and on all day yesterday, then again today.  Finally got smart enought to get the old glucometer out and it read 112.  Had a bologna, cheese and ketchup sandwich a little later, then tried having nothing for 2 hours.  About 1 3/4 hours later, I started feeling really icky again.  I tested and it was 106.  Had some orange juice and I felt a little better.  Had supper and felt a lot better.  Two hours with nothing but water, and the retest put me at 80.

I've spent half the night on Google, then again, I got smart enough to throw the question out here... WHAT'S GOING ON?   Maybe it's not even my sugar... maybe I just had some bad eggs.  Or maybe it's high blood pressure and I'm just looking at the wrong thing.

Shaky, nauseas, spacy, tired, like I'm going to pass out, headache, and my face 'throbs' (I'm sure there's more), but the numbers don't make sense.

I know, go to the doctor, right?  I'll be calling to schedule a complete physical sometime this next week.  In the meantime, just wondered what y'all thought?

Type 1 requires insulin, type 2 does not - sm
that is the basic difference. Type 2 can be controlled by diet changes and/or medication (pills). My MIL has type 2 which runs in her family, no one is obese either. She controls it with diet and medication. Your dermatologist I think is wrong. Doesn't your husband know which type he has?
Diabetes
I have diabetes that was discovered when I had a kidney stone back in October. I was put on a new medicine which did not work at all - then on a 1000 calorie a day diabetic diet and told that I needed to lose 35 pounds which would put me at 100 pounds (i think that is ridiculously thin) - I have not experienced any numbness to the point - but my diabetes is not well controlled on diet, either. Fasting usually between 160-190 - after meals up to 220. Guess i really need to get back to the doctor to see what I need to do next. I have lost some of the weight, but not the whole 35 pounds - and I do not intend to lose that much - I don't want to look anorexic. I hope he sees the doctor soon to discuss this.
Would said diabetes but
that would not necessarily mean cold water, just excessive thirst period. Other than that, no diagnosis here.
Does my mother have diabetes?

I went to mom's house yesterday.  She had some overnight guests staying with her who were diabetic and had a meter.  They took mom's BS earlier yesterday morning and it was nearly 300 she said.  She could not tell me an exact number.  This morning it was down to 158.  She said that it has fluctated from 200 to nearly 300 to 150s.  This is concerning for me.  I asked her if she was feeling anything.  She says that she has early morning headaches and a feeling like she was going to pass out.   She said she was symptom free right now though.  She said she had been drinking whole milk, eating lots of sweets and that is why it is so high.  She said that as if it could happen to anyone but I don't think that is normal, it doesn't happen to me.  She says when you get older, your body changes.   I asked her if she has said anything to her doctor.  She said that they do random blood tests for her medicine and it has always been borderline but they have never said or done anything or even mentioned it.

Am I jumping the gun on being concerned?  Mom is in the low-income range and I am wondering if this is why the docs aren't doing anything.   Mom is overweight and is 58 years old.

i was just diagnosed with diabetes

No insurance.  Went to the doc yesterday to go over lab work I had done in November.  My blood glucose was 127 (upper limit of normal being 126).  I am 45 yeard old and overweight, but I never had this happen before.  He then did a glucometer reading (after I had had three cups of coffee, each with two sugars, of which I was still sipping on as he took the reading).  He then ordered new lab work as a recheck, but stated he had to put NIDDM as a diagnosis on the requisition form.  I don't feel a diagnosis can be made that simply.  What's really upsetting is the fact that he informed me that now since I had been diagnosed with NIDDM that I would probably never be able to get health insurance with a pre-existing condition such as this.  I feel that through correct diet and exercise over the next few months I can easily lose ten or more pounds, and that this more than likely will change the status of my next lab values.  I feel so very sad about this.  What do I do??

Know some about diabetes, but need additional input, please
My husband has had diabetes for some time now- always prided himself on taking supplements, herbs, trying to eat right and leading as good a life as he could because of this. Today was told he should finally start on some medications and was given some insulin today and a shot tomorrow for sure but I think if they can get it some down (from the 300s today) he will probably just be on tablets. I do know about foot care being important, also about some foods (such as bananas and Irish potatoes to be avoided) but any other insight you might be able to give me. I really, really hate this for him - I know he is a very strong-minded person as well as his health issues have gone and I know this is probably a bother to him in the fact that he just could not control himself. Any input is appreciated.
Diabetes is what jumped to my mind as well - sm
I would definitely get a checkup and make sure it is not a symptom of something.
How log does your friend suffer from diabetes?
Diabetes is a devastating illness that destroys over time all organs in the body. Taking medicaments and later insulin injections can only slow down the destruction of the organs.
If I were you I would not blame the doctors.
Diabetes, probably no longer than 5 years
I know very well what hypertension and diabetes both can do, had a husband who was dialysis just because of uncontrolled hypertension and eventually dying. She was not strong enough to question (oh, well, she could not have even known maybe what they were saying) the ESLs and yes, there are older folks out there who cannot understand the first thing that comes out of their mouths. Do you not know older people who take everything a physician says as gospel and would not dare "rock the boat" so to say? She has responsibility here, mostly hers, but not being able to understand. They might have told her she was on the verge of kidney failure and she could not comprehend what they were saying and just stuck it out with the same people.
Time for another diabetes education class.
That's why most doctors send their diabetics to classes - because the rules have changed from their pre-diabetic days.

My body predisposed to diabetes but dont use that

My husband diagnosed 1 time with diabetes, get this
he ran 1 high blood sugar and was diagnosed. He did have elevated blood pressure but for years and years controlled his blood sugar and the elevation was always and I mean always low- the insurance company would NOT cover him because of that 1 only diagnosis. I tried talking to them- they told me 2 counts against him- unable to get life insurance on him. This diagnosis was made on a job entry and for 7 years he kept his blood sugar average or below, made no difference. I have been there.
Could be gallbladder, maybe diabetes. Cut out the meat and fats for a few days and

Here's how I see the difference
Happiness is derived from a sense of accomplishment or achievement...it usually involves a skill or talent. It is something you usually work toward. Very much akin to enjoyment.

Pleasure requires no skill or talent. It is usually physical.

What's the difference?
You say, "That's the difference." Can you clarify?

You are correct, I didn't phrase a query. I told them what I wanted them to do, and I told them in a calm and respectful manner. I didn't lecture them about what they were doing, I just told them that I would like for them to leave. In our township, school property is not open to the public. It can only be used by permit after school hours, and I am the permit holder. I am within my rights to ask others to leave the property during the times when I'm designated the responsible party for the property.
So I didn't ask the teenagers to leave. Had I asked, "Will you please leave," the answer could be yes or no. That was not my goal. Therefore, saying "I'd like for you to move off the property," clearly states what I want done.
Still, I don't understand what you mean by "difference" in your post. The difference between what and what exactly? Are you saying that I should have asked them a question and then abided by whatever answer they gave me? And that since I didn't offer the opportunity to decline a request, they were within their rights to be disrespectful and shout obscenities?

The lady who posted on MySpace also, if I remember right, had sent personal emails to this young girl. There was a deliberate attempt to hurt this child and progressed over time. The woman is not being punished for her posting on MySpace, she is being punished for her deliberate attempt to deceive and hurt someone else. Nothing would have happened to her, I believe, if the child had not taken her own life. Once a crime happens or is committed, her intent changed from bullying to involvement in a crime.

the person who wrote her opinion about another person has committed no crime against that teacher whatsoever. If a student can be suspended for calling a teacher a name, then perhaps EVERYone who calls someone else a name, should be punished in some way, shape, or form, but the last I knew, our country was still a free country and we were able to express our opinions about another if we chose to, even negatively.
What is the difference in that and them

age difference
Actually, I married a man 17 1/2 years older than I am.  Outside of his kids (his oldest is 5 years younger than myself), things have worked out quite well for the last 32 years.  He raised my kids and they love him and treat him better than his own kids.  Depends upon what you are looking for in a relationship.
Difference here in what you and I say
You said busted your butt to pay for. I did not have to do that, never paid a house payment in my new home, husband does that for me.
well I think the difference is

mentally challenged is a PC word to describe anyone with a mental illness  - (does it also mean, or instead mean, someone with mental retardation?)

Autistic is specifically someone with one of the autistic spectrum disorders.  They may be mentally challenged, but all MC are not autistic.

Then there is physically challenged, the PC word for the physically disabled, which I personally hate... because I am physically disabled...  disabled will do just fine....

What difference I see
Pork skins are sold in the package and can be out of the shelves, usually in the potato chip section. Cracklins which are fried bits of pork are sold in the meat department and need refrigeration, otherwise they spoil. Skins need no refrigeration.
There is a difference between ...
supply and demand and "inflation".  Just look at the over supply in houses and cars now and you can get a great deal now.  There is a fear of the food supply becoming scarce (whether that's true or not, I do not know), and scarcity or fear of scarcity increases the value.
Please tell me the difference in you
being a working single mother as opposed to a working divorced mother. Does it make a difference in your marital status or lack of some kind of way that a guy would talk that way? I just wonder how that plays into it?
Age difference...sm
My hubby is exactly 3 weeks older than me (we are both Virgos, but he doesn't act like a Virgo...he's too calm, cool, and collected).
I can't tell the difference when something has MSG and when it doesn't. nm

thanks Jon-but I knew difference between the 2.

If you want to make a difference each
month you can give $30 a month to Worldvision and sponsor a child and also help the community the child lives in. They also have a way you can give gifts at Christmas with their catalog (which I did this past year made my family cry) where you give $13 for a wheelchair! OF course it is not a high tech wheelchair but one that works well for the child that needs it. I have been doing this since 2003 it is a blessing.
Only difference, is most were legal and
not anymore. I do not want to pay more taxes and they pay ??? none perhaps to cover them. I pay enough as it is without adding on extra mouths to my taxes.
Oh, please! There is a big difference between a cookout
and a massive fire unattended leaping into the woods behind your homes that can set all the homes on fire. We can cook out all we want but we cannot have bonfires going. We live in a county where there is NO outside burning, be it your old cars or your barbecue. Sorry but if I lived here or somewhere else, safety should play a part in whether you would like to keep your residence. Just common sense to me. I love my peace and quiet. Other can live in rat holes if they like. We have our swimming pools, our tennis court, our neat and manicured yards, no loud music playing and rocking your home, no kids running in your yards, no fighting, swearing and the like, just pure blissful peace. Cant beat it! Best place I have ever lived. I would go for these rules in ole day commpared to the posts I have read and how others have to put up with crap. Not this woman!
How do you explain the difference between...
a republican and a democrat to a teenager?
The difference is about $150 - yikes!
I checked out the website and a 3-week supply of entrees and shakes was $294 plus shipping. Thanks for the info, but I think I'll try NutriSystem.
Difference between us and the situation you described...
I would have yelled back at her instead of hiding my tears. When she hurts our feelings, we let her know it. (I know, I shouldn't be yelling at my kid, but hey, I'm human, too.)
There is a huge difference between ...sm
spanking and beating. My dad used to get out his belt when I was bad. And I mean, I deserved it. Those lessons stuck in my brain, and I did not EVER break that rule again, not out of fear, but respect and I always thought twice about breaking any other rules. Even after I was past the age of spankings. I do not spank my kids with a belt, I cannot bring myself to do that, but I do not fault my dad for doing it to me when I deserved it. I also am a very nonviolent person. I will spank my kids when all the time outs and talking to don't work and nothing else seems to make the lesson stick in their head. They do not have bruises, they are not scared of me, they are happy kids. I think if a lot of other kids would have gotten the spankings they deserved when they were growing up to learn those lessons, they would not have been out shooting people or beating others up and have the issues they do now. And no, I did not grow up in the 50s. I am only 30 years old.
There's a little difference with smoking, though.
Your second-hand smoke is harmful to others and the environment.

Alcohol kills more people than just those who ingest it.

Obesity only kills the person suffering from it.

Rude to comment on it? Maybe. Then again, everyone who has to put up with the butts on the ground, the second-hand smoke, the nicotine stains and the stench of it clinging to you as you walk into the building -- well, I guess they do have a right to comment.
people don't know the difference between... cm
"your" and "you're" including medical transcriptionists (even worse).

The difference is that you never did; these guys have already been doing it. nm

it all comes clean in the wash anyway. Their bowls are not any dirtier than yours are, after having eaten off of them. just my opinion.
What is the difference in a dog eating
raw chicken and roaming around outside and eating an animal it kills????
Reiterated over and over age difference

He says it doesn't bother him; he just wants to make me happy!

Totally amazing !

Ten years difference here, been married
for 7 years, his first and my eeks, 4th but this is the last, I promise...
Not saying I care - makes no difference to me
one way or the other. I just have a mild curiosity what others think. This is a forum, isn't it?
Heck no sounds like you can't tell the difference.

Difference between judgment and discrimination
It wasn't 20 years ago that he murdered those 2 people.

Yes, you are wrong and I will be happy to correct you. Most restaurants, especially privately owned local restaurants - that are not part of a franchised chain for example - have signs up that say they have the right to refuse service to anyone.

Also, you are using discrimination in a pejorative sense. Before political correctness robbed this country of its moral fiber and backbone, discrimination was a good thing. It meant using common sense and good judgment in every aspect of one's life. I think we could all use some discrimination in our lives together.

I see no reason why any business owner should be forced to serve anyone, as long as they aren't basing that refusal on religion, gender or race.

yes, exercise will definitely make a difference

There is a difference in not wanting to be in the limelight and

your spouse not knowing the details of your life.  I don't particularly care about being in the limelight, either, but telling my spouse about my education (or anything else for that matter) is not the limelight.  That's simply communication with the person who should be my best friend, my confidante, the one person I can always count on.  I agree, your tax lady was wrong to imply that he was slow.  I'm afraid if my husband hedged about something, it would throw a red flag for me and I've known him since 1977.  He might not willingly tell everything that he did in his past, but where he went and how long he went to school is nothing to be secretive about.  JMO.

Is there a difference between DSL and cable modem? sm

I've been working at home for almost nine years and have been on dial up.  We live out in the country and DSL/cable modem hasn't been available all this time.  We aren't even on the DSL list.  Found out yesterday that we are going to have cable run out here and we'll have fast speed internet via cable.  Is that as good as DSL?  I'm really excited about this!  Just wondered cable is good and reliable fast speed internet.  I think anything will be better than 45 Kbps.

Thanks!

Explain the huge difference please. (sm)
Is it between alcohol and pot, crack and mushrooms, crank and LSD? Please, explain to me the huge difference. To me, all drugs are drugs, but maybe some are more preferential to you.
elderly man/toddler any difference?
Would you leave your toddler unattended with 3 pitbulls? No I don't think so, and neither should an elderly person be left with that many big size dogs no matter what the breed!
Neutering also make a difference
Not immediately, but over a little time, they seem to settle in to a more serene frame of mind.
Does it really make a difference regarding the death
