Anyone who has relatives in assisted living, high rise places, anything?

I have a dear aunt that went to live with her son and his fairly new wife of about 2 years. My aunt really needs the assistance of someone but this is not working out. She is 86, called me tonight, wants to go back home and I told her I would try to assist her. She is my second mother since mine died several years ago. I have heard that high rises go by how much income a person has. I do not think assisted living is a possibility as might be too much money involved for her, she does not get that much from social security. She has both Medicaid and Medicare and I wondered about inhome help also. Anyone out there who has a situation like this that can give me any information I would appreciate it. TIA

My MIL is in an assisted living...
I think it depends on location and what is available really.

She lives in Salt Lake area and is in an assisted living, paid for through her Medicare/Medicaid and Social Security benefits. She has an apartment there and is wheelchair bound and they even let her have a cat. You should do some checking for her because there are places that will take them.

I worked in an assisted living for a while here where I live and it was mostly for private pay. I think nowadays they do allow otherwise due to the need for it and it is cheaper than putting them in a nursing home.

Once again, I would check on it. She will have to be evaluated of course to see if she meets the criteria for assisted living or if she needs to be in a long-term care. Prepare yourself for that one as well.
Retirement home/assisted living
Go to one of the retirement homes or the higher class assisted living complexes in your area that has a beauty shop in it and I bet dollars to doughnuts that they can give you what you want as that is how they do it for the ladies in those areas.
Till after this weekend - FULL MOON on the rise!

assisted suicide
How do you feel about it? Negative, positive? I know each case is unique but it's always a terminally ill patient and usually there is quite a bit of suffering involved. What are your thoughts?
Assisted suicide here in Georgia
A man here in Georgia went a website called Final Exit as he had decided to end his life, had been suffering with cancer of the head, mouth, etc. Now the people who helped him have been arrested for participating. Apparently they use helium and the person or else the people around him then use a bag over his head and from what I am hearing they hold his hands because once he makes his decision and says yes, no turning back. There are some states that allow assisted suicide, Montana and Washington being a couple of them. What I want to know, I type and you probably have also of people at end of life being given morphine in the hospital to "make them comfortable" when actually all it does is speed up their demise by slowing down respiration, etc. I guess the medical profession is able to do their own "Final Exit" scenes but no one else?
I am having it done via lap assisted vaginal way, using a new process called
Robotix. If all goes well, supposed to be a day surgery, first thing in the morning and if I feel up to it, I may be able to come home same day in the afternoon, which is what I am hoping for.
He was 86. I have many relatives
in their late 90s & a couple over 100. When your parents reach their 80s, you won't be saying things like that because you'll hope they have many years left beyond 86.
RELATIVES FROM OTHER COUNTRIES
My husband is a first generation American. His folks came here legally, worked their buns off, and did it the right way. My father-in-law became a citizen as did his sister. My husband's sister married a man whose entire family came here LEGALLY from Beirut during that awful war where they lost everything, their businesses, their homes, couldn't even leave their hiding places to buy grocersies because they were shot at, so they went without food for quite some time. They were singled out there because they allowed the females in their family to go to college. Can you imagine? They came here with what they could salvage LEGALLY, then got jobs and saved their money until they could start their own businesses. All of these humble people respected our laws and now are part of us. They are all Americans now except my mother-in-law who passed away still with her green card, but she always showed up and did what she needed to do legally to stay in this country and she loved it. None of them worked for anyone illegally or under the table. I say send all the illegals back. All of them. She is right, we don't have enough natural resources or cash to take care of all these people who do not respect us anyway and take and take and give nothing to to contribute to our society except more illegal things in order to earn a buck. Like sell drugs, drive drunk, pretend to be Jose Somebody at the ER so they won't have to pay the bill that we all cover. Enough.
I'm sure some of your relatives are feeling sm
the same horrible crunch. Feel them out gently. Together you can approach the insensitive members of your family.

Instead of saying you "won't be buying any gifts," say you "can't" instead. It's the sign of the times, and not a reflection on you.

You can have a very merry and wonderful Christmas without gifts. It's love that makes Christmas Christmas!

Merry Christmas to you and all the other posters and readers!

People can get pregnant on an IUD. I have two relatives who did.
You have to wonder why she hasn't had her tubes tied, and why he hasn't had a vasectomy and gotten a full-time job since he's perfectly able-bodied. At least if they're living off the dole, one or both should be going to college on grants to eventually be able to support four kids.
Who are you buying for, your kids or relatives? If you
know someone is going to return whatever then go with a gift card and let them get whatever they want themselves. But, whatever you give them they can do with what they wish. You have no control over that.
awkward conversations with relatives
Sometimes there is not much more to say when it comes to the cookies. Sounds like she had just enjoyed the conversation and wanted to keep it going... maybe she liked hearing from you guys.
Wanted to let you know what happened to relatives
I went with my two sisters on two separate occasions to fill out forms at social security. One sister was applying for social security benefits and when asked about her marital status she told them single. The women then said, have you ever been married? The next thing my sister had to do was to give the names of all previous marriages and the dates they were married and then the woman said she was listed as divorce. Another sister, who only lived with this man for 22 years after his death went to see if she would be able to get any kind of help from them. You should see the form she had to fill out. It was called a marital relationship something or other and it went on for miles. We were told they ask about previous marriages and the like to see if people might be getting money from other places. With the married sister according to the years she might have been married to either 1 determined whether she got social security on that marriage. According to SS if married, gosh don't want to mess this up, but seems like over 20 something years then you would perhaps be able to draw from that marriage even if you are divorced from them so when applying for things like that if married previously you are not considered single.
I have had this happen with relatives and friends alike - sm
I am actually surprised now when someone actually calls or writes to say they received something I sent and *thank you* for sending it. How sad is that? I was also told to send a thank-you note or call the sender the very day you receive their gift, no matter if you like it or not. After all, they cared enough to send SOMEthing. Guess we are a dying breed???
Charmed...I have similar relatives. Here is something to remember

MISERABLE PEOPLE LOVE TO MAKE OTHER PEOPLE MISERABLE.

That is why the saying "misery loves company."

I know they are your family.  However, if they treat you that badly, dump them and move on.  I went through this years ago.  I have family like this.  They never had anything to do with me unless they needed something from me or they wanted to belittle me.

One can find friends who are more like family and treat you with respect.  Make sure you have caller ID and DON'T ANSWER WHEN THEY CALL.  That is the first step.  LEARN TO SAY NO.  It will not kill you, I promise.  When you empower yourself, you learn to like you for yourself and it no longer matters what these people think of you.  When it no longer matters what they think, they will see it and pick on someone else.

Actually, relatives in suburban PA don't lock either and I feel safe there, roo. sm
But i would not feel safe in my own home unlocked, even though I'm in a gated community with tons of outside lights, etc. For some reason I feel safe in someone else's house more than my own.
I have relatives in fairly rural Maine who never lock, and I feel totally safe there. nm

there are usually places where you can get
kitchen cabinets, sinks, and bathroom vanities and sinks and other fixtures that are discontinued models at a discount and if the kitchen is small you can probably find what you need.
Know both places well
Grew up in Texas and have live near or in both what would you like to know and I will try and help.
Want to say this, some of the places
are not what I would consider very nice upkeep. Have been to the Flamingo to see shows but old, run down to my liking, also very smoke filled casino where you walk in off the street. I am surprised has not been 1 of the 1 demolished to tell you the truth. Monte Carlo may be ok- is on the strip. Lots stay at MGM, looks really nice from the lobby view. The Stratosphere is really low on my totem pole, did not like the atmosphere there. You want to stay on the strip I would think, easier to get around. The taxis are costly, ride the trolley, also there is free rides to places. The last time I was there found a place off the strip I wanted to see show- called the hotel and they told me where to catch free ride!! Lots of places offer those- people just don’t know to ask. The buses are cheap enough. Lots of walking- long, long blocks.
Hi, not just the ads here, although I do think that of all places,,,,sm
an MT forum and networking site should be more representative of what actually takes place in this field. There are ads on the internet, TV, magazines, just about everywhere. I think they should tone down the "rhetoric" quite a bit, and stop using hopeful young woman/moms as THEIR meal ticket with mostly UNREALISTIC and misleading "guarantees!" Really gripes me! Thanks for responding!
PUBLIC PLACES

I love animals; however, I have a life-threatening allergy to dander. Keep your animals home, love them, and enjoy them in YOUR space.

The places where I was able to go in my travels
always had babysitters available for the families. Oh yes to tell you the truth I do have money.
Have been loads of places
Greece, Mexico (5x there), Puerto Rico, Bahamas (4x there, Jamica, Alaska and my hubs fav is Las Vegas (6x there)- I was only in Jamica for a week but had a blast there, so much to do. I probably would save my favorite and most gorgeous (water included) was probably Alaska. Very hard trip for me, so far and I thought only trip of a lifetime but I think I have changed my mind and would love to return. It would be between Jamica and Alaska and I am past the beach thing now. Have a great time!
Been to lots of places
My favorite all-time place for me has to be Salzburg Austria (birthplace of Mozart), if you want sunny beaches the best time my hsbnd & I ever had was Ibiza (one of the Balearic Islands located in the Mediterranean Sea). We had two weeks of peace and quiet in a little bungalow. Spent every day lying on the beach, drinking sangrias & munching on paella and fresh seafood. Hiked all over the place. Had to take a bus from the airport to the hotel which was a very interesting ride as I felt like I was in a Romancing the Stone movie (we rode with animals on the bus). Sounds horrid but it was actually fun. My other "beach" vacation spot is Greece. Was there for a week. Lots and lots and lots to do there. Beaches, sightseeing, shopping. Mind you these were the mid 1980s when Reagan was president (and our country was a little well more liked than now), so not sure about safety in other countries. Hands down though I say Ibiza has to be the best if you want a relaxing beach vacation.
Happens at other places - certain posts take over for a while
no harm really - gets people involved and more people coming, etc.  It's playful - try to enjoy
Chances are if he's doing it in the same places, (sm)
some urine has gotten under, between, or into the wood panels on the floor. You may end up having to pull those out and replace them. Don't use any kind of cleaner that has ammonia in it - as it will ATTRACT the cat to that spot.

There is a very good product called "Nature's Miracle", and they also make a cat-specific formula, too. It has enzymes that eat the invisible crystals of urine that you can't see or smell, but your cat - with 1000 x's better smell than humans, can still smell. There is also a similar product called "Anti-Icky-Poo" that works the same way.

Be sure your cat has more than one litter box, and try keeping them as clean as possible. Most cats don't like scented litter, so try using unscented only. The hard-clumping kind is the best, because you'll leave less traces of urine behind when you scoop. Experiment with litter depths. Lots of cats don't like it very deep. (Like my cat). Kind of defeats the scooping feature, but having to wash & replace litter more often due to using less may actually be a good thing.

My cat actually prefers NO litter... and either just a bare box, or one with some paper towels on the bottom. Only thing is, that way it's only good for one use, and has no odor-control.

If you use a domed litter box, try removing it. Some cats feel claustrophobic in them, and they can intensify odors inside (like a human's port-a-potty). If it's a big cat, try a larger litter pan. (A plastic sweater-storing box, like you'd get at K-Mart or Wal-Mart, makes a good "jumbo" litter box.)

If you only have one box, add a second. (A good rule of thumb is one box per cat, +1 extra). My cat likes to pee in one box, and poo in the other.

Try putting the box(s) in the spot(s) where he goes. If it's not in a good place for YOU, but he's using it reliably, you can gradully move it about an inch a day to your desired location.

Is there anything psychological that could be going on? (Which is MY cat's problem!) Is the litter box in a noisy place, like next to a washer or dryer? Is there a new cat hanging around outside that he can see and is worried about? (That was also happening here... I bought some cat/dog repellent and spray it around outside every couple days to keep them away from the front door, where my cat can see them.) I also tried spraying some of it in areas where I didn't want her to pee indoors, but with about 80% success.

I'm in the midst of trying the Feliway "Comfort Zone" synthetic pheromone products right now. It's EXPENSIVE stuff! But anything's worth a try at this point. One bottle is a diffuser (kind've like a bathroom scent-thing) that you plug into an electrical socket in the room. I use mine in the corner of the kitchen where the litter boxes are. There's also a spray bottle. If the cat is SPRAYING (like on the walls), they say to spray it where the cat sprays. It's supposed to be pretty effective. But for litter-box avoidance it can be less effective. For that problem I sprayed a little bit IN the litter boxs (she has 3!), and found the first 2 days it worked well. Kitty had a relapse this morning, so I'm hoping that was just a slip, and that the Feliway will keep on helping.

I called Rescue again, and they said that even though she tested negative for a UTI, that she would still have a very low-grade one that doesn't register on the test. They swear by putting the litter-box-avoiding, negative-urine-tested cat on about a month of antibiotics anyway, and that it often clears up the problem.

So I may try that next. The ONLY other thing I haven't tried yet is putting her on an antidepressant such as Prozac or amitriptyline... which I don't think her pet insurance will cover, and I don't think I can afford. I guess amitriptyline is sometimes a good choice, not only for its calming effects, but also it's anti-inflammatory properties.

It's not an easy problem to deal with, so I wish you luck, and I hope I might have had an idea that might help.
Different places when no office available

I have been in just about every room of my house at one time or another.  I started out working in the kitchen years ago because I had dialup and the apartment I lived in had only a phone jack there.  The kitchen was my favorite because it was away from all the noise--that was when the kids were smaller, though.

I have had a desk in the bedroom before.  It was handy when the kids were at school or hubby was home to take care of them, otherwise it was a pain because it was in the back of the house and if they needed something I had to get up from my desk.

The family room is okay, unless you have really loud family like mine.  My kids must be deaf sometimes, I swear.  Oh yeah and they argue in there over the TV the PlayStation, etc.  However, you can deal with some of that from the desk without having to get up.  It is a fair trade most of the time.

I had two different mobile setups over the years.  One was laptop which was okay, but before WiFi, so expensive.  The second, I had a desk on wheels that had everything I needed.  I could roll it out to the back porch and sit there to work while the youngest was out playing.  This was good for mild weather.  Be forewarned, if it is really hot outside where you are, you may have PC problems.  I used to have one that would overheat and shut itself off.  Ugh!!.  Oh, BTW, direct sunlight is bad if you have a laptop or plasma screen, so make sure you have shade!

I currently have my own "little room" for now which basically is the size of a really huge walk-in closet with a window and a door.  I shut the door when the kids are home because the words "please be quiet, I cannot hear when you are yelling at eachother" apparently are not in teenager-ese.

Hope this was helpful!

Trading Places.............. sm
Not in a million years would I want a celebrity lifestyle with all it's attendant trappings! I cannot begin to imagine the stress level that comes with it, including protecting one's privacy and that of one's family as well. Too often, I have seen a celebrity or their child brought before the glaring spotlight for America to inspect and dissect because of some err in judgment on their part. Besides, I'm not good enough with money to handle my meager salary, let alone the vast amount that a celebrity garners! LOL
I am visiting the places you list
My first trip to Wyoming, visiting the Rockies like I said, Jackson and the like. Landing in Salt Lake, Jackson, going down Snake River, Grand Tetons, Yellowstone, Sheridan, Keystone, Mount Rushmore and listen to this, Bear County USA!! What a grand trip. Your country must be beautiful. I just wish could make to Montana as I hear the scenery there also grand but so looking forward to my trip and thanks for the information! Cannot believe my family turns down all expense paid vacation! My trip starts July 25th.
Oh and hospitals are some of the worst places for it! (sm)
Maybe it is rampant everywhere, but let me just say, people who work all night together in a place where there are beds....
Found several places on line that say...sm..
Do not machine wash, do not tumble dry, and do not dry clean. You probably need to vacuum the heck out of it with the crevice tool from your vacuum then maybe you can Fabreze it to death and leave it out in the sun to dry. I wouldn't use it on my own bed if it still has odors of any kind. Get your face right down on it and breathe deep! They're usually used for bedbound patients that are often incontinent. I think I'd still get a mattress pad or cover and put over it, too, even if you do get it fairly clean. Good luck!
Magnets - especially from places I've been.
.
My kids have their own places - one is married, one is not...sm
but they both still have a key to our house. There have been several occasions when that has come in handy for me and them as well. I think it all depends on what works best for you and your son.
This offends me, the fact that places can get away with it sm
Yup, I'm a Catholic and I have 6 kids. If not for birth control, I don't mean natural family planning, I mean medical ordinary birth control I WOULD HAVE 12, not 6.

As a matter of Catholic principles, I refused to have my tubes tied, that part is true. But I used birth control of all sorts, BCPs, barriers like French letters and diaphragms, cervical caps, IUDs and the like. I still got PG no matter how hard I tried, so I accepted the children and busted my fanny to support them.

For the record, never been on welfare, but had food stamps for two months when the ex stopped helping support them. It was too much hassle for the $118 a month they gave me and I could make that amount of money in the time it took to go and fill out the papers and have an interview. That alone should tell you something about those of us who prefer to work than take a hand out, and about others who line up for hand out rather than work.

As I have gotten lost in what I was going to say: This just pisses me off! A woman has a right to CHOOSE what goes on in her body, from birth control to abortion to you name it. This country was founded on the idea that we are all free to do as we choose, follow our conscience and NOT suffer at the hands of those who would TELL us what we can and cannot do!

EWWWW!
Those places tend to be more expensive sm
Glad you found something that works for you, but that is not the case with everyone. QVC, Catherine's, etc, tend to be more expensive, which is okay for a special occasion outfit once in a great while, but I cannot afford to spend that kind of money on my everyday clothing. Also, if I can't try it on, I usually don't buy it. I have bought clothing from catalogs and feel for me that it is not worth the hassle. Things look one way on TV or in a picture that do not translate well on me. Even in a store, I have picked something up that I thought was really nice and hated it once I tried it on, as I am sure many women have. I am not defending wearing too-small clothes. I am only trying to come up with a reason for someone doing so. You wouldn't catch me dead out of the house in something too small.
We're just trying to stay out of places like
Walmart & malls until we see how fast it's spreading, etc. Seems like every sick person in town flocks to Walmart...

Take vitamins, wash hands after being in public - what else can you do short of wearing a mask?
So, did the person trading places with her have to
Usually the moms on that show have to try to do the other person's job, and it would be interesting to know what happened when she tried doing MT!
He will run out of people, places and things. nm
......
Yep - lots of places...The Carnegie Deli

The Carnegie Deli on Broadway in the 50s, the Stage Deli same area, and Zabar's on 72nd and Broadway.  There are tons more too.

Hope you enjoy, I'm sure you'll enjoy!!!  And I forgot, that the hot pretzels ARE delicious in NYC too...they just weren't being sold like that off a cart back in the days.

Oh and then the roasted Chestnuts around Thanksgiving-Christmas time....yummmmm

ENJOY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not aware of any standards at public places
And to add to your point about Mexicans, all their dirty business is NOT only under their fingernails. Have you not heard of the gangs they have all over this country...something 13 or another they call themselves. They are viscious, ruthless people, and are going into areas where they think the local law officials won't be on to them. They try to intimidate and scare communities into silence so they can get their garbage drug trade and smuggling stuff going in silence. Our prisons are so full of illegals, they can't hold the legals, but of course, lets not gather them up and deport them back to their wonderful country...lets house and feed them, give their kids a free education better than they're getting there, free healthcare, the list goes on and on. Now, our president wants to make sure they can get SS benefits....for WHAT? In our community, you can go into Wal-Mart late in the evening and our stores are full of young Mexicans, mother, father, and always a baby, maybe 2 or 3, but where do you suppose they were born? The parents can't or won't speak English (since they want to be a loyal US citizen). My daughter teaches a school where the kids abound and their parents are most likely illegal, but until we stop this practice of giving citizenship to an illegal born in this country, this will never change. I'm with Ron Paul on this one....we can't keep a sovereign nation when we allow an invasion of our country. We can't absorb these people into our communities without major negative consequences.
search for *open-ended* MRI places
Open-ended MRI imaging centers is what you need to look for.  We have plenty here where I live (Florida)...but MANY people cannot stand the long narrow tube to lay in for hour(s)....just like me!  So, keep on searching for open-ended MRI centers!!  *S*
I got 3 - yep, places I like..but there is a swap site online (sm)
I saw earlier today for people to swap or sell their gift cards if they don't like them! I got Ulta, Bath and Body Works and Belk.
I have to agree. Places of worship are like family.

Best places to visit on the East coast

In June, my husband and I will be attending the HD Bike Week in Laconia, New Hampshire.  If you had to name just two or three places that everyone should see on the East coast {Washington, DC, Maryland, Virginia, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, etc. down to North Carolina} what would they be?  We will be visiting Maine - that is already on the agenda.  We plan to visit Arlington National Cemetary and the Capitol.  We have been on the Freedom Walk in Boston.

We have not determined how much time we will be spending on the East coast.  Please just name the places you think we should visit if time wasn't a concern.

Thank you very much for your time, assistance, and input.  I appreciate this very much!

There are other places to go, much better, in Negril. The Sandals resorts are all sm
very nice, clean, well run, lots to do, good food, etc. There are are 2 RIU resorts, but they are not on the main part of the 7-mile beach and they have their hands out for tips often. Sandals and Beaches (owned by Sandals) employees will not accept tips even if you try. We have been to Negril 4 times and LOVE it. I have heard that about Couples though and also about Swept Away.
Are you going to laser your veins? Places here in NY say to have it done on your lunch hour!

I do not know what kind of monitored places you are talking aboutr or where you are
this is not mine. We are not told what color to use for garbage cans, we put out whatever Christmas decorations we want so that is not the kind of place where I live, maybe different in your state. Our entire state is in a drought now but we are not allowed, not just the neighborhood, but the entire COUNTY does not allow outside burning and if you don’t understand outside burning?? cannot help you there. I love my place, my neighbors seem to love, have not heard the first 1 saying they hate. I guess your state and town different, though. I have posted this before- we can barbecue- we cannot set bonfires like the neighbor had going next door with flames leaping into the woods adjoining our homes, unattended, fire danger to my house, his and others around here and besides, against the COUNTY laws. I am the happiest with the place I now live than have ever been in my life. Quiet, calm, peace of mind.
