Was it tough love, or cruel and unusual punishment?

A father says he wasn't trying to shame his 14-year-old son when he made the boy wear a large sandwich-board sign saying, "I abused and sold drugs."

"I'm not out here doing this to humiliate my son," the Knoxville, Tenn., father told WATE-TV as the teenager walked up and down the sidewalk Wednesday in front of Cedar Bluff Middle School, according to the Associated Press.

"I'm doing this because I love him," he said. "We do have an extreme drug problem in America, and maybe it's time for extreme measures that parents need to take to monitor this problem that we have."

The man wasn't identified by the station to protect the confidentiality of the son, but he appeared on camera. The son's face was not shown.

The father said he recently learned after reading the boy's MySpace page that his son was involved with marijuana and OxyContin. That's when he decided to act, and the boy agreed to the punishment.

After a short time, the school's principal soon came out and asked the father to call it off, which he did.

By then the boy said he'd learned his lesson.

"This is embarrassing. I ain't going to be doing it again," the boy said. "Drugs are for losers. That's all I can say."

Club Med
I would recommend it highly. I've been to Club Med 5 times, twice before I got married and three times with the children. We have so much fun. It's like a cruise on land. There's so much to do or you can do nothing at all. There's clubs for families and the kids have their own clubs within Club Med. My daughter learned to water ski. They had Circus School at the Club Med in Florida, so she leared the trapeez, etc. She loved it so much we barely saw her the whole week we were there. The foods is amazing. Truthfully, I wouldn't go on vacation anywhere else but an all-inclusive. Unfortunately, we're not going this year due some medical problems within the family, but hopefully next year.
I think that my biggest change is that
I am no longer a people pleaser. If people don't like me as I am, then they don't. I use to do so much stuff to try and make people like me, but not any more.

Christmas Club...sm
I have three grown kids (includes 1 in-law) and I have money taken out of my paycheck through the year and whatever the amount is when I get the check, I divide that by 3 and that is how much I spend on the kids.  It's usually around $200 to $250.  I put back through the year from my OT and get my husband something nice and then I just pick up a few inexpensive things along the way for a couple of other people I like to give a little something to.  I don't think anybody really cares how much I spend on them, but I do try my best to be equal in what I spend on the kids, even at their ages now!
Join the club!
I cannot get mine threaded! Couldn't believe that. Will wait until after the holidays to try again.

Club Med is amazing
You could also try Club Med. They have places all over the world. We've been to the one in Cancun twice, the one in Florida twice (very family friendly), and Bermuda. Just the kind of vacation I love.
There are some Club Meds that do not
admit anyone under a certain age. Not all are family friendly, some very adult themed.
Very correct about Club Med
There are only a handful of Club Meds that that cater to families. There are probably over 50 and there are some that are supposed to be quite wild.
This is one of my biggest fears! When I saw it on CNN, I thought I was having...

a nightmare!  When I was a little kid one of my uncles said something like some of the bridges in Missouri are so old that pieces fall off with every car that drives across.  Couple that with my fear of water and drowning, I have been afraid of bridges ever since!  To see that awful site on CNN with the bridge collapsing into the Mississippi River with 50 cars on it -- I could feel myself breathing faster and my heart racing!

How horrible for those people on the bridge whose cars went into the water and the school bus with kids just sitting on the piece of broken, hanging bridge.  The parents were probably hysterical with fear and worry!

I've been praying for everyone involved since last night.

Who got eliminated on Biggest Loser?
Didn't change clock on my video recorder.  Thanks!
My daughter is into Club Penguin!
She's a computer geek already!!!  Just kidding!!!  LOL
Find a Steelers fan club
We moved away from Pittsburgh 20+ years ago.  Most cities have fan clubs.  We belong to one in our city, and it's a lot of fun going on Sundays and watching the games.
country club dressing sm
Just attended a wedding at a country club. No matter where you go, everyone dresses differently. I would wear a dress or nice pants & top with some jewelry if you have any. Some of the men had suits and some had just a shirt and tie (with slacks, of course!). I wore a plain short dress with a jacket handy because the place was so air conditioned, and a nice necklace, nylons and a slight heel. Everyone was dressed differently. Just make sure your hair looks neat, your crowning glory, then the rest of you will feel just fine. I think since it is your family, you may feel better if you just look neat with a little jewelry that's in your budget. They are very fortunate that you are celebrating their milestone. Wearing a smile and taking lots of pics and giving a copy to the couple will put you high on their list. Have fun!!!
Timeshare/Vacation Club

Last summer, my husband and I got suckered into one of those timeshare talks while on vacation.  We ended up buying into the "trial program".  It wasn't overly expensive, only about $1000, and we would receive 1-week at one of their resorts and a "price freeze" should we decide to buy in after that.  After returning home and reviewing the package a little more closely, we decided that we wanted to cancel the trial package.  I did a little research online and found that we had 7 days to cancel a timeshare.  I immediately sent a certified letter to the resort company requesting to cancel the purchase agreement.  They never responded and I ended up calling them to see if they had received my request.  They confirmed that they did but that it was non-cancellable.

We stopped the autopay that we had set up on a credit card.  From that time on, we began to get collection letters.  I contacted the real estate commission for that state and asked for this to be investigated, to which I received a blanket letter from them stating that they tried to mediate but that the resort refused to resolve this.  The resort basically stated that it was not cancellable and that we owed the money.

What I am wondering is, what happens now?  The resort said they would continue to pursue this issue through third-party collectors.  If I legally am obligated to this debt, why wouldn't they just take me to court?  Why would they continue to draw this out?  What effect will it have on my credit score?  Anyone ever been in a similar situation?  I should also note that we never used this vacation package.  It expires July 2009.  The total due has now escalated to about $1500 due to their "late fees".  I don't want to ruin my credit over $1500, but I also don't want this package.  Any suggestions?

I would hit Costco or Sam's Club and grab (sm)
some big bags of tortilla chips and salsa, something more bland maybe for the kids - and maybe even offer hotdogs/buns for the kids so they won't waste friend chicken?   You can also buy big cans of Bush's Baked Beans and I'd get a potato salad or macaroni salad as well - you want them to fill up on the less expensive items so you don't run out of meat - kids usually love spaghetti also - that and some french bread would be a good side - I worry about fried chicken and the mess... have fun!!
Dear Columbia DVD Club
I know I was a sucker and a moron to ever sign up with you and probably deserve all the grief I am now getting with you charging my credit care for things I didn't order.  However, I believe this just might be FRAUD (ya think?) on your part.  Please stop charging me.  Thank you.
Checking on the biggest news stations
none are carrying that story so I would think they would have a person right at the spot, like they always do.
Mammograms..From the world's biggest chicken..sm
I've only had the "plate" kind (plastic or something, not glass) and it's really not painful at all.  They don't actually "smash" the plates down on you, the technician slowly compress the plates after positioning. It's more of a moderate pressure feeling. If you take your hand and slowly compress the breast a little firmly that is about what it feels like. It's really not painful, and I'm the world's biggest chicken!!...)))
Biggest Loser voting question
I need to vote, but I can't find where to vote!  Shouldn't that be the first thing you see when you go to the website?  Anybody have a link?  I want Roger to stay because I think Mark has reached the limit of healthy weight loss.  If he keeps competing it is not going to be pretty!  Plus his body and mind start breaking down because he pushes himself too hard.
Extended warranties are the biggest waste - sm,
of money, and the all time scam of the century. The couple times I was d*u*m*b enough to buy one they never, never paid for themselves. I never buy them now, haven't for years and have never had a problem with any of the products I bought that offered them. Believe me the companies that offer them (just about everyone) are laughing all the way to the bank....they take in way more then they ever have to pay out for repair work/replacments, etc.
I think a clean maker can be the biggest factor sm
I have had a Bunn, Mr. Coffee, GE, etc, and the main thing in how my coffee tastes is how clean the maker itself is. I have learned the hard way that it must be cleaned with vinegar or a coffee maker cleaner once a month or the coffee maker will be slow to brew and not have a good taste. Also making sure to check the manual for how much coffee to use - mine states no more than 3/4 Tbsp per 6-ounce cup of coffee even though the coffee itself says 1 Tbsp per serving.
Right, I posted in my 1st comment that the biggest mistake
a cheated-on person can make is to go out and do the same, tit for tat.
Then one loses everything.

Yes, Diana should not have cheated, this made, as you also stated, her position weaker and Charles' stronger and this was the beginning of the end.
Giving up and bringing him to your bed was your biggest mistake -
You are teaching him that you are going to give in to him if he whines a bit. If you will just consistently hold out and not go to him, he will stop it in a few days. I just went through this with my new pekingese. She took about 2 weeks of crate training before she quit whining. I never gave in to her for whatever reason and even if it was time to take her out, I never got her out until she was completely quiet. Now, all I do is tap the box when it is time to go in and she usually goes in completely on her own and she never cries anymore.

Wasn't she on the Micky Mouse Club?
I thought I read that somewhere.
Was this the sniper trained guy whose while was singing in a club?

Thanks Kokopoo. I feel more encouraged now. My biggest worry is the
hormonal effects. I certainly feel better with the thought that I might be able to fare well with that with vitamin and natural resources. Thanks for sharing your story.
Who'd Have Thought? "Clean" movies biggest winners.

Here's an article that analyzes the revenues earned by movies without foul language, violence, explicit sex or substance abuse compared with those that include these things.  As you can see, depravity loses bigtime.  Good on you, American movie-goers!  You're rewarding decency and punishing filth-peddlers the best way possible - with your dollars.

I swear, I should be working. But, I just got done combing through the new Sam's Club Christmas s

catalog. You would not believe the kind of stuff they have in there now! I was impressed, shocked, thrilled, all at the same time. Now they have "packages" that members could buy and here were your 3 choices. You tell me which you'd choose, okay? Remember, this is just for fun because obviously none of us are millionaires (or at least I don't think we are :)

1.  The Tony Bennett package which includes: Round trip tickets for 4 to London, VIP passes, meet Tony, autographs, 5 star hotel, gold VIP seats, food. Price: 44,000.

2. The Super Bowl package: Round trip tickets for 4 to Miami, tickets to the game, party with Dan Marino, 4 signed autographed jerseys, limo rides, 750.00 per person for spending money, 8:00 tee time at NFL golf game with an NFL player (OMG, how many husbands would be in awe of this??), 5-star hotel, amazing seats to the game, PLUS - 57 inch plasma t.v., surround sound for your home, camcorder, digital camera. Price: 77,000

3.  The New Cessna Mustang (BEAUTIFUL), personal jet: Price: 2,400,000 (or something like that). To the person purchasing this: You must wire transfer 275,000 upon agreeing to buy it. This is MY choice, especially since I have a son who lives 4 states away.......

But, how much does a personal pilot cost? How much does it cost to "store" your plane?

Ahh, the lifestyle of the rich...How nice would it be to get your hubby the NFL package for Christmas???? It just doesn't compare to a tie, does it? Sigh..................

My husband is a runner and is very active in his track club.
He drives me a little crazy, because it's nothing for him to run 10-miles for a "simple" workout. But he does a lot with the club by setting up races, some of which benefit charities. And he's very good, by the way. He's finished well in national track meets. He's also the treasurer for our son's boy scout troop. I'm an assistant scoutmaster and do all of the outside stuff with the kids. Hubby HATES camping, hiking, backpacking. But that's the stuff for me! Our interests overlap in a few areas, but there have been times that we even take separate vacations. (Lots of people gasp at that.) But, occasionally, we can combine them. He's running in Maine next year, and I know that there is a river that passes in front of our hotel. I'm bringing my kayak! He can run all he wants! :)
I composed a song about the Westmister Kennel Club and put it on CD SM
and have written poems and want to submit them, just don't know where, as I see warnings not to submit them to many publishing companies. Any good ones I can trust?
Love the show but was very aggravated too. The biggest reason I think Marcel is there is because
he is using "gastronomy" (not sure if that is exactly right), but what it boils down to he is using chemicals to increase the flavor in different ways without it affecting the way the food looks, etc.
Anyone sign up and use The Biggest Loser weight loss plan? I am

rapidly adding on pounds sitting here most of the day, but don't have a gym nearby and cant afford to be on the road for an hour 1-way to get to the closest one.  Am sliding down the slope to obesity real quick.  Does the information help you?  Is it worth the $$?  Can this be done without an exercise buddy?

Any replies would help - positive, negative, suggested alternative web-based programs.

Thanks~~

My biggest peeve!! Hind-site is 20-20 - live and learn (sm)
I have been in similar situation is the distant past and not said anything and felt awful later for not saying anything. Now if it involves a child absolutely I will say something. I learned my lesson. I won't let another opportunity like that slip by without voicing my opinion. I figure even if the parent was so bad they ended up hitting me it would be worth it! At least the child hears someone sticking up for him or her (not at the age you saw of coure) and knows that what is happening to them is wrong. I have led small children to their parents in stores, brought them over to their parents in parking lots when they were walking alone, etc. I once found a 3 year old child wandering around my apartment complex (years ago) alone. I asked him to show me where he lived and he did - way, way, way across the complex. His mother would not come out and talk to me but hid in the apartment and just yelled out "okay, thanks." I was in my 20s then - if it was now I would have done more than just take him home - I would speak face to face with them mom and maybe even turn her in. Anyway...got me ranting..sorry...but just learn from this so that next time you know you did the right thing and you won't feel bad. Those children you saw will be talking soon and they will tell mom what is going on. If he doesn't want her to know, it means she will defend them. It is still sad, but it is hard to make a snap decision about what to do if you have never thought something like that through. now you have and next time can be ready to speak up :-)
My biggest time waster/sucker-upper is work related

If I need to research a word or a procedure and I find a link with downloadable free surgical videos...watch out!  Fascinating stuff and man, you learn a lot when you watch them and it's accompanied by the surgeon talking the watcher through step by step, because then it really gels in your head.

I do most of my shopping on line though, just because the only stores near me are Walmart and Target, which totally don't buy stuff I need around here.  However, sister wouldn't get paid if I did it during work hours, because I spend too much time researching the best deals and always free shipping, so that can take up quite a bit of time.

Maybe a nice garden/gazebo/outdoor wedding at a club/restaurant etc nearby? Get
s
I would buy it on line
and have it shipped
I am not sure it is so out of line...
I am 30 years old and I shared a bus with high school kids in Kindergarten. We also got two weeks off at Christmas and one week off for spring break. I think that this is fairly common. Also, when I was in sixth grade, the school district began charging a "bus fee" and we had to buy a bus pass or our parents had to drive us to school. I think the fee was $150 per semester. We had minimum days every other Wednesday and teacher inservices once a month. This all seems normal to me, but I understand that different places work differently, but I would not find this so strange.
Along this same line...
With the unemployment rate at 10% where I live I am shocked at the people who DO have a job - poor service, bad attitude, just downright stupid people. If jobs are so hard to come by, why are these people being hired and how do they keep their jobs?
Crossing the line...
I don't think so. What age should we start teaching our children responsibility? I said she forgot her lunch ONCE...and she never forgot again. (Besides, she eats about 2 bites of it anyway, so it's not like she was starved that day. And she had morning and afternoon snack provided by the school.) I'm a tough mom, but I'm not about to neglect my children's basic needs.

Needing a coat in blizzard type weather...well, here again I'm sure we will differ on opinion. You go from the heated house to heated car, from the heated car to heated school building. (And I'm sure my child would be resouceful enough to find antoher coat/sweater/jacket that she might have around to wear.)

No, I do not forget things. I make lists to make sure I never walk out of the house without something I need. I do not have time to be running back and forth for something I forgot, our family has a very tight schedule and return trips home are not an option. If, for some reason I ever do forget something, I'm sure I'll survive and move on wih my day and life.

Our children are all straight A students (all 3 speak/read at least 3 languages, even the 4 yo.), they two older ones are honor society members, they all belong to competitive atheletic teams, and they are contributing members to our Temple and our community, so I think we have done pretty darn well them.

I dropped you a line by the way, and yes -sm
you can email if you'd like. Probably a lot of guys out there like ours.
We have a life line
We have a life line you can get through your local hospital probably.  There is a "base" connected to the phone.  She can wear a necklace or a pin.  If she needs help, she pushes it and believe me you will hear it, it says, "help call in progress, help call in progress".  Someone will pick up and ask if you guys need help.  You can answer, no we have it now, or yes we need help.  It is approximately 40.00 a month.  This is also good when you want to go out and she has to be alone.
My DH glances at it now and then on-line - sm
but he does not troll the sites much, he certainly does not take care of any business while on the computer, though he does have video tapes I know he uses now and then on the rare times he is home alone. A friend of his gives him Playboys and Penthouse as well about 2 x a year (lives in another state and saves them for him), again he does not "use" them, but does look at them. I have never felt threatened by them, they are not physically with him, I am, all they are are 2D pictures. As for the lesbian thing, that is a fantasy I think just about every guy has, being with 2 girls/lesbians, you get the picture. They might fantasize about it but if the opp every came up I bet 95% would run, I know mine would. If your BF has lots of it though on his computer he may have a problem he won't admit to though. You can always ask him about it but be prepared for him to explode at what he will see as you snooping on his computer, which you appear to be guilty of. I never look on my DHs computer unless he asks me to check or do something on it and he stays away from mine as well. I presume you will have to talk to him about this and I hope it goes okay for you.
Because that it just the subject line..sm
you are supposed to use the message space for the entire message, not the subject line. duh.

I met my husband on-line...sm
We were matched through eHarmony.com. We were married last June and he's definitely my perfect match!
You know what, I just read on line that this is probably what is sm
going on. I can't believe I haven't caught on before that he is jealous. At least now I can find a solution to this problem.

I did talk to him about it again tonight in a very respectful and helpful manner and told him not to be embarrassed. He said he just likes to pretend to be a baby again....My husband isn't home right now, but when he returns later we will discuss this problem. Thanks!
Have you heard the line about how
you should take care of those things in the morning before you come to work? I've had to explain that not everybody's body works like clockwork. How convenient when it does!

When I was little I was appalled to hear that some people went every day. I wondered how in the world they could stand to have all that pain and spend 30 minutes in the bathroom every day. I had no idea that normal people didn't take that long or have all that pain that you do if you only go once a week.
A penny per line does add up! (nm)
x
The man in grocery line who said anything to me
would have not liked what he heard from me then. I am way past the age of caring what I say and whether I would be offending and would have used, probably the F word, (yes I do use that when I get that ticked off)when he had such nerve as to say something when I was trying to feed my babies. I have never had anyone that rude to state unsolicitated remarks to me regarding them but they would really get an earful if they did. I might be kicked out of the store, oh well....
Goin' to the end of the line!
How they handled Roy Orbison's passing in that video was so tasteful.

Okay, you Bob Dylan fans, here's a vid for you. This is the one my little girl likes because he looks "mad" when he sings.
