Adults used to take an interest in how kids acted. Parents could be called for the tiniest infraction. My mom lived in such a small town that her mother would get a call if she simply walked home from school by a different route! While that's over the top, she certainly knew she couldn't get away with anything, LOL.

Sometimes ignoring a cat is irresistable
to them. But it works best when the one wanting the loving is home alone with the cat, so maybe that's not too helpful.
Ignoring them is the only thing that will work
And it will take time before it works. Just ignore them and pretend like you have no idea what they are talking about. It'll take a week or so, but eventually they'll figure it out.
