All of this makes me think how lucky I was growing up.

In Reply to: About polygamist compound - the polygamy doesn't - bother me-forced marriages do (sm)
My father was a wonderful man. He loved women. And by that I mean that he had the greatest respect for women. I was his only daughter, and I can't count how many times he told me that women were generally smarter, more capable and able to handle more than men. He was full of admiration for the women in his life. Long before Tom Cruise and "Jerry Maguire", my father used to say, "Men and women complete each other."
Because of my father's attitude, I grew up believing that I was special, and I'm sure it saved me from a lot of heartbreak and helped me to form health relationships with the men in my life.
The women in these polygamist situations are raised up to be this way. They just don't know any better. I believe they are brainwashed by these sick, despicable, poor excuses for men. I hope that they can get themselves and their children out of this situation. Unfortunately, it looks like many of them want to hold onto the only thing that they know.

You are lucky, and so is he! It makes me feel good...sm
to see there are happy couples out there.
You're lucky (or he's lucky) the parents care
I have 2 kids just down at the end of the block from me and their parents don't give a rat's behind what they're doing. They're real smart alecks - ages 10 and 12 (?), both in elementary school. Apparently, they're quite the bullies at school, too. They like to mouth to any adults when they whiz by on their bikes. Is it wrong that I'd love to take my kids' BB guns and shoot their tires out when they're doing this?
Their mom doesn't care. When we first moved into town this past fall (short-term thing while we're building in the country), I felt sorry for them. They put on a good act. After a few weeks of them coming to our house and pretending to want to play with the boys, we soon realized they were freeloaders -- wanted to eat everything in my fridge (without even asking first) and then wanted to play our computers or video games (without my kids). I put the klinks on that real fast. After that, they started treating my kids like crap. I told my boys as long as they didn't do anything physical to just ignore them because they didn't care if they got in trouble and neither did their parents. Their mom even had the balls to come looking for them 1 night after they didn't go home. It was 9 o'clock at night and it got dark then around 7. I couldn't believe it.
Just a few weeks ago, the 2 perps beat another kid with a baseball bat at the ballfield. The cops were at their house quite a bit, but I see they're back out on their bikes again wreaking havoc. I can't wait till we move back out to the country!
Fabric softener makes towels softer, yes, but it also makes them less absorbent. sm
Which is, after all, the function of a towel, absorbency. :-)
when I was growing up
our Monsingor of our church would yell at the parents during the middle of mass because babies were crying in church told them to leave! Guess he could not tolerate much.
Growing up, did you get along better with your mom or dad?
I got along waaaay better with my dad. My mom was a control freak.
But once I moved out on my own, I got along fine with both of them.
I don't do well with controlling people.
About the 50s, I was growing up then
and most of the women in my home were a) widowed, b) divorced or married and working, in fact all the women worked whether divorced, widowed or married. You were watching a TV show. The women in my life had power and responsibility and I never thought of them as being coddled, kept or irresponsible. I remember as a child when I would say my mother was divorced it was odd for other children (most mothers married then and most stay at home mothers). Kids would want to talk about how I felt as a child of divorce and I always said 1 less parent to say no to me. I have never nor has my husband called me stupid. Name calling is just not done here. My love is the most important thing in my life to me here on earth.
Me neither as my child growing up
things can really change in life.
reminds me of my dog when growing up
my dad did not like him being on the couch and he would jump off when he heard him walking towards the room. Another favorite was as my dad was coming down the stairs my dad could see him on the couch before entering the room as we had a mirror hanging on the wall...maybe our dog could see him too!
We always had dachshunds growing up...
and I have always felt that they are honorary big dogs!
I can remember growing up that my
sister went through a spell where she would only want to eat one thing. My mom called and talked to the pediatrician, and he told her not to worry about it. When she got hungry enough she would eat whatever was fixed.
When my daughter starts into her stubbon streak (which she inherited from both me and the ex) I just send her to her room and let her wait it out. Back in the day, our parents would probably swat us on our you-know-what and say get over it, but you know today that is abuse.
When I was growing up we had 3 channels but guess what?
I find it tremendously funny when yu0o say a trial shoved down your throat. I have cable and have, oh, over 100 channels. No show is ever shoved down my throats, we just, duh, change the channel or just DON’T watch!!!
I was so glad when mine growing up that
I always had much praise for others they visited/stayed with, in fact I had a problem between my mother and father (them being divorced) because they would be trying to keep a child longer than the other thought they should. I had phone calls saying - he has already had- she has kept him now and so on. Friends told me my kids when visiting sooo good- wondered how I did- the kids now are being brought up so much more different and this is what people can expect. I also know about the saying sparing the rod- right?
what I did growing up really is none of my kids' business.
Here and there I've volunteered information and shared stories that actually do lend validity to my opinions and the rules I have set for my kids. But I have to tell you that I was really a pretty good kid. I have maybe only one or two regrets, but I haven't shared those with my kids. And if they asked me about them, I'd lie and say nope, never did that.
She won't grow to fit her tank, she will just keep growing....
But eventually she has to stop growing some time. I really think she has probably grown as much as she is going to. If she has to go to a bigger tank yet, we may have to see if our local zoo will take her. The tanks are the biggest outlay. I get all her rocks free from our local monument maker and a quarry. I buy a bottle of the stuff to kill the chlorine and use our city water.
Cleaning her tank is not too bad as we have a gravel vacuum. We don't fill the tank all the way up, only about 2/3 full. They need at least the width of their shell for the depth of the water in case they flip over on their back. Otherwise they can't flip themselves over. We do a partial tank change. Just enough to suck up the "poop" and food scraps. Then we replace it.
Other than her lights burning out once in a while, she is pretty low mainatenance. And fun to watch. Especially when she chases the goldfish. LOL
There is a growing body of evidence
that circumcision is simply not worth the risks. Among clinical investigators, not just "kidhealth dot com."
If the risks of bleeding or infection are higher with circumcision as an adult, then for heaven's sake, don't do it then, either! Unless, obviously, there is a surgical indication for it.
I repeat: Having a foreskin is not a surgical indication.
We were told a lot of things growing up
such as wearing gloves to church but do you think people do that now? Did we show up in church years ago in pants (say the 60s, 70s), most did not but probably common now. Having said that I do not think by any means cursing only means you have a limited use of the English language. If anything I throw out words loads of time my husband asks me to "break it down for him" or "use English" and I am not talking cursing. If anything, another term for MTers are language specialists which I think applies to most who do this job. Next assumption.
I was bullied in school growing up
My mom contacted the bully's mom and the mom asked her daughter if he had been doing what I said. Her daughter said no and she said to my mom I believe my child.
I yelled at daughter when she was growing up. I'm not

What do you think of that lash growing medication?
I've seen the commercial but cannot remember the name of the med, but it's for growing lashes. It may cause (possibly) reversible eyelid darkening and permanent discoloration of the iris. Would people really want those potential risks and/or side effects? I mean, you're messing with your sight here. I've always had long lashes and find them a pain at times - they curl the wrong way and poke your eye and you have to pluck them (ouch), they catch on your glasses, etc. I can't help but feel that we'll find out 10 years down the road that med cause some kind of cancer.
Not unusual at all - my DH had one growing up and still talks about how smart it was! (nm)

My husband growing up lived on a farm where
his father raised black angus cattle. You cannot get a better cut of meat than that except for the extra expensive Koba (spelling?) maybe. He and his siblings told me,they got so tired of having steaks, etc. all the time and welcomed bologna instead. Now way past childhood, my husband loves a good bologna sandwich because years ago it was like a treat for the kids to get instead of the steaks all the time.
This reminds me of a lady I knew growing up...
She would eat almost the entire plate of food, and then find "something" in it and say she's not paying for it... the "something" happened to always be in the last bite...
It's called cheapskate not quirky...
As far as putting breadsticks in my purse, I'd imagine the butter would go everywhere. Why not ask for a take out package instead?
Sugar packets - that's going a bit far......
I also knew of a man who would break off celery in the grocery store, throw it in the bottom of the cart, and then leave the store - he didn't want to pay for the entire thing and only needed one stalk or so... again, cheapskate.... the bad part about that is he handled it, put it back on the shelf, and someone is getting ripped off who buys that stalk...
Which reminds me, always pick from the back and bottom; that's the freshest produce!
There are times I would love to stop the growing process
but I look at that as denying my children the incredible happiesses I have experienced, such as college, marriage, children, etc. and that makes it a bit easier.
Any avid gardners with advice on growing great cantaloupes? sm
I seem to be able to grow everything but these. It seems something always gets them about 2 weeks before they are ready to harvest. I live in mid AL. What can I do to successfully grow one of these wonderful, yummy things?
You are so very lucky!

You are lucky! sm
I think you are so lucky to get these "signs" that your loved ones are still around you. I wish I could have similar experiences. I love Lisa Williams' show. Sylvia Browne can be a bit harsh but she's a real character. I live in Upstate NY and wish I could still get John Edwards' show.
How lucky!
That would be nice!! It would be nice just be able to take time off when you are behind on everything like housework, etc. Oh well, high ho high ho it is back to work I go
Yes, you were very lucky. sm
I tried match.com, put in a 30 mile radius ( small area here). I found I had already met all of these losers, about 10 of them, in one context another in real life, and would never have considered having even a cup of coffee with any of them. Lucky you!
LUCKY YOU!!! sm
Mine only cooks on the weekends about once or twice a year. We wound up having turkey breast but I wanted grilled salmon so I ate that instead. Yum.
Lucky you!!!!!!! nm

Lucky for me...
I'm not a Harry Potter person, but those who reside here are...
My daughter is 20, son is 26, and son's GF is 22. One is asleep after reading all night and the other two are quietly reading... the house is so QUIET!!
So... Lucky for me, they are reading and that I don't feel jealous because I have to work!!
They preordered and got the books last night. Unfortunately, my son accidently ran into a spoiler on the internet w/o even trying... so he's a little bummed.
Well... happy reading when you get off!!!
Wow, lucky you!
Was he a real ladies man and as good looking as he is now?
You will be lucky if
the kids don’t come back and wreck the meeting place where you were. I agree with you about the parenting. It should start really, really early. Hubs and I out last night for dinner and couple next to us with child, about 3 I would say that was all over the place but mostly a danger to himself as he was climbing up on the chair up on the booster seat. There were 4 adults at the table but not one called this child down. I am glad my children grown. Call me overbearing or whatever, my kids were never out of control like what I see now. Oh, I did not spare the rod either.
How lucky you are to be there! Have a
s
He's been a lucky cat (sm)
Look at all the years of love you have given him...that is so sweet. Most animals never get a forever home where they can stay and live for 15 years. It's sad but it's sweet too. You have given him a good life :-)
Lucky you!
Believe it or not, I sure wish I was there! I have lived in central Florida since 1994 and have not lived in snow since. So sad. I was so glad to throw the old ice scraper and mittens away, but I really miss it. I miss snow days (not horrifying like Hurricane days are here), I miss cozy in the house while the flakes drop outside and how pretty it is. I know you in snowy areas might think I am nuts, but it is still 80s here and the only snap in the air is something for about 10 seconds between 6 and 6:15 a.m. No sledding here, only A/C in the house. Oh yeah, there was snow at my downtown, fake snow made by the town council for a holiday fair. There was roasting chestnuts, hot chocolate and hot cider. Too bad my little boy wore flip flops, he could not go in the snow and it was too hot out to drink the cider. Oh well, at least it looked like Christmas LOL.
Yep, consider yourself one of the lucky ones!
I remember my one brother at that age...wouldn't be caught dead near his mom, especially not in the kitchen! My other two brothers though, they were/are good eggs like your son. You must be doin' something right!
He's definitely one of the lucky ones
I would be very happy if my husband received anything. Granted he gets a monthly bonus depending on profits at the shop (he works at a car dealership - sometime good, sometimes not), but it would be nice if he got an actual Christmas bonus any amount.
I wonder if maybe they have been lucky enough
not to have experienced as much death as some families.
I know when we lost my aunt, she was only 63, but still it was the first death in our family in many years. There wasn't a lot of loud grieving, but most of us were walking around in a state of numb shock.
Very sorry! She was very lucky to have you. nm
!
You are very lucky.
I read the book and saw the movie and loved them both. It's one of my favorite movies.
You are very lucky sm
I live in CT where just this week there has been three home invasions and about six months ago there was the one from Cheshire CT which made national headlines. Two teenage girls and a mom were raped and shot. A total of four people are dead because of this. All the criminals in these cases have past records. No one is safe anymore. I am so glad you are okay.
Wow! Lucky you!
What state do you live in?
Lucky you!
Man that sounds like a great time! I really don't think you will have a hard time. I bet your kids will just enjoy themselves. Be safe!
you are so lucky!
you see, i clean my desk off every couple of weeks, and every time i do, i SWEAR the next day it is a pigsty again!!!
Lucky!
I miss Pittsburgh. Especially Primanti Brothers!
Go Steelers!!
Lucky 13
There are 13 full moons in a year. The lunar/femaleness of this is what turned it into a negative superstition, but to me, Friday the 13th is like finding a dollar on the sidewalk.
I am very lucky to have a DH with -sm
with a good head on his shoulders, who started saving when he was 20, obviously picked good funds which have mucho mutiplied. I met him when he was 35 and had $200K at that point, and all he had then were 2 aggressive mutual funds. After we married we open up 2 more mutal funds and the bond (which only has $100K in it). So the majority is in the mutual funds, not the bond. So basically it boils down to $25K a mutual fund gone, which in the big picture really is not that bad. I swear by Fidelity, they are really a great 401K. We made out tons better than friends and my father (who lost about 50%). We pass on tips to my dad but he never listens which in hindsight is quite foolish. He lost over $250K and is scrambling now but his house is paid off so he will be okay, just may have to pare down some of his hobbies. I would never presume really risk a lot of our money on our own. We did have some stocks in a fund that I had opened years ago on etrade, those jerks sucked it dry with fees, etc. and lost $500. My DHs pension is a joke($50K total, worse than SS if that is possible--assuming you live a long time) so it is a good thing he started young, as have I too but my personal IRA is a joke compared to his 401K, much less than yours. I guess mine will be the play fund in the future and his we will use to live off of. Despite the losses we have reassurance that the money is there, and if by some freak chance he loses his job we will bit the bullet and take out enough to pay off the house and for the penalities we would ensue for doing so. I hope it does not ever come to that but as I don't make enough to pay all the bills it would become necessary unfortuntately, he makes four times what I do, and I don't make that much, not anywhere near the people on here that say they make $40-$60K a year.
lucky dog
My dog would probably try to eat the snake. I am lucky I havent seen one... the keyword is SEEN. One day I went to look for something under my bathroom cabinet and there were 3 piles of snake poop and a huge snake skin.... I about added a 4th pile of poop because that scared the crap out of me!!!
Lucky you!!
Where do you work? ;-)
you are one of the lucky ones, ---sm
perhaps you should read the post below about whose child was given chemo and died a horrible death. Chemo does work for some, but not all. Alternative treatments work for some, but not all. To be ignorant and say that child will ABSOLUTELY die without it is also wrong. You don't know that. Nobody knows that. Only God knows that, and if the mother and the child wish to seek alternatives to chemo, that should be their right, without the government interference and without other people who happen to feel differently interfering, as well, like by turning them in. Leave them alone, it is their lives, not yours.
maybe we should suggest chemo to people who want gorgeous hair now, too?? as your post seems more preoccupied with the looks of your daughter's hair than with whether this poor 13 year old boy should be forced to have something he does not want.
