(January of 2006)  "Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf has been sworn in as Liberia's president, making her Africa's first elected female leader.

Loud cheers greeted her inauguration, with US First Lady Laura Bush and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice among those at the ceremony.

Mrs Johnson-Sirleaf says her top challenge is to maintain peace, law and order after 14 years of civil war."

2006 - sorry (nm)

Are you blaming voters for indiscretions of elected officials?
Why comdemn the voters of a state who elected a man who had no prior history of any bad acts and actually stood for prosecution and punishment at the highest level? Yes, he is now a hypocrite, but do voters have crystal ball?

And are you blaming Hillary for her husband's indiscretions? Do you base ability to run government on any level on whom someone sleeps with?

So, what about the state of Idaho who brought you Larry Craig? Should we start wiretapping all elected officials of that state too? One bad act equals condemnation of all?

I am not at all condoning what Spitzer did. One thing I can't stand is a hypocrite. If he broke the law, he should be punished and suffer any repercusions. Obviously his family is suffering. His wife looked as if she aged 10 years overnight.

Anyhow, I could care less who elective officials sleep with (within the law) as long as they do their job and don't tell me who to sleep with.
Yes, me since 2006, so I'm starting

to be an old pro at trying to make ends meet. Hang in there. I doubt it can get any worse????

I've been the main support for DH and me since 2006. I'm tired of doing it but have to keep going.  A lot of times, I would love to take off work for a day and/or just "retire" but it's impossible. I am now working 7 days a week instead of the 5 days  just ot make up the difference in pay checks.

We're all in the same boat this year. It can't get any worse, I hope. At least, hubby's pay did take care of the mortgage and taxes for this year but we have no idea what will happen next year. He doesn't even know if he will have a job to go to,  but is looking into other possiblities 'cause around here, there are no jobs.

sad to say-women will never be able to run Africa.

Women will never run Africa (who is Oprah kidding?!) as long as Arab terrorists known as Janjaweed are still controlling at least 80% of Africa.........

Women running Africa - Don't I wish!!!  But it's more backwards there than here - and we know how most feel about having a woman run THIS country............. and for Africa it certainly isn't going to happen in our time or Oprah's time either........unfortunately.

A way to help orphaned children in Africa sm

http://www.godsgoldenacre.org.uk/ - I read a book this weekend called "God's Golden Acre" which is a biography of a woman, Heather Reynolds, who started a program in the South African province of Kwa Zulu-Natal, in the valley of a 1000 hills. She helps children who have been orphaned primarily due to their parents dying of AIDs.  Right now I have children of my own who need me, but when they are adults, if I am physically able, I want to go over and do as much as I can - I am very happy because for the first time, I feel like I know what I am meant to do in this lifetime.  In the meantime, they ask people to donate if they can or at least to make people aware of them by posting the link to their site.  I grew up very hungry, right here in America, and help came from many sources throughout my childhood. I distinctly remember one group of women from a church who came in and literally filled our cabinets with food.  Although the name of this organization is "God's Golden Acre" you don't have to be a Christian to care about these poor children. There are so many of us with so much love to give....this is just one of the many places you can choose from to share yours :-)

The school in Africa is a leadership academy.

I saw a special about the school on TV, and trust me, many of those girls are as poor as you can possibly get.  I saw them packing up to leave their homes, and many homes were nothing more than a dirt floor with a roof and no running water.  That's poor in my book.  She chose girls based on their leadership and academic abilities.

I think she is looking at the big picture and hoping to improve the future of Africa by putting girls through school that she hopes will someday rule Africa.  I believe she has built numerous schools in other countries too btw.  I do think Darfur needs attention, and the main place I have seen coverage of the dire situation there is actually on the Oprah show.  She is raising awareness of what is going on there, when most talk show hosts just worrying about their ratings.

She can't really save the whole world, and I'm sure she is used to negative attention, but I do think she is truly trying to help people in American and throughout the world.  At least she's making an effort.  Even if I don't like a celebrity, if I find out they do a lot of charity work I at least have to respect them for that.

I am status post bilateral mastectomy with TRAM flap 12/21/2006
my first post did not post...

-During the immediate postoperative period I found that button front pajama tops with drawstring pants were the most comfortable. About 1 week later if I had to dress, it was in some sort of button front shirt (warm b/c it was winter) and yoga pants or sweatpants. Eventually, I added in a camisole for some bit of support for the new "breasts" created in the reconstruction.
-If your friend will have postoperative drains you'll need some heavy duty safety pins to help keep the drains/tubing from pulling when toileting.
-Large ice packs were great for helping prevent/reduce swelling and also the need for narcotic pain medications. -For me the constipation/cramping cycle set up by the use of narcotics was worse than the immediate postoperative pain and I stopped using them during the day on postoperative day 10. (I would need these later on...see additional post)
-Since I had the suprapubic-tummy tuck type scar I found that my old underwear rubbed exactly on it. I did find some at Walmart..don't know the name but they are boy pants with lace V-front, and are about $3/pair. They were perfect and hit just below the scar.
-Tell your friend to start eating prunes or fiber now and be sure to get some Colace and take it preoperatively. I did so and still had terrible problems with constipation.

also: I recommend 2 books that really helped me out:

Not just One in Eight by Barbara Stevens
and
Beating Cancer with Nutrition by Patrick Quillin (formerly of Cancer Treatment Centers of America)

I hope this helps you and your friend. God Bless

Our most honorable President
I think it is a tremendous job he is doing so far. Hooray for his actions concerning the navy SEAL team. I just took a survey on CNN and it was asking how many consider what Obama said about glimmer of hope and seeing things turned around and 64 something to 40 something felt the same glimmer. I am truly glad he is there instead of what it could have been, YIKES!
Will let other share the present president...
…Now he is 1 that I will change the channels on, always something better to watch such as the cooking shows, animal shows. I knew the election outcome but after that and the flubbs, such as his war and Katrina, other folks can have him as their own. Being as I have never watched the "soaps" don’t have a clue as to what is preemptied there but I have choices here at home and I simply watch what I want to.
President Kennedy hearse
How can someone bid on the Kennedy hearse? What a wonderful world do we live in!
Yeah, out of the country since O became president.
nm
Well, I'm a taxpayer and taxpayers pay the president.

Yes, the Obamas have "other" income, whatever.  The fact remains that it falls to our prez and his family to set an example for the rest.  How can O preach fiscal responsibility as he has been and yet his family spends money so frivolously?  We are in the midst of a depression and she is wearing $500 pair of shoes!  People are being laid off and 401k's are being decimated.  Those who have retired are having to go back to work and she is wearing a $500 pair of shoes!

Do you get it now?  It's not whether the money is hers to spend, its about not practicing what you're preaching.  It's about struggling Americans trying to make ends meet and president saying "I feel your pain" when obviously he has no freaking clue what our pain is.

It's just one load of manure after another with the O admin.

Who is on the $10 bill? According to two seven year olds, it's President...(sm)

George Clooney!!  Ha!!  My daughter said it the other day, and tonight I heard her friend say the same thing.  They sat in the back seat of the car arguing with my 10-year-old that they were absolutely sure.  My son, also slightly misinformed said, "George Clooney is a comedian" to which my daughter's friend replied, "No, a comedian is someone who works with animals."  These really are pretty smart kids most of the time - but I got a huge kick out of their "facts" tonight!  HA!

Is President Bush visiting our site?
Sorry, just got me giggling.

No you wouldn't. But some women would. The PTA president last night (sm)
came up and put her hand on his knee and thanked him for offering his information about the school's sound system. Then they exchanged phone numbers. He's not a bad looking guy. So someone will want him. Not you, and not me.

My former OB/GYN was female sm
but I didn't think she took me seriously as to how bad it was for me.  I had gone to her since I was 21 years old and she delivered both of my children.  I started having the PMS/heavy bleeding after my daughter was born 7 years ago.  It only got worse and worse as time passed.  Last year I started having the pain across my back and down my legs but the last two months that has gotten better.  The PMS has gotten better since I have reduced my stress level (was full-time job on-site/juggling side jobs and now at home full-time/not juggling so many jobs).  However I am feeling more now like the PMS is not so much anger but more emotional like wanting to cry when I think or look at something sad.  I still get a little short tempered and another problem is decreased libido, which normally I have no trouble in that department at all.  Loving husband, married a long time, yada, yada, yada...  Happy with life, but it is just those 2 weeks before that I suffer the most with the PMS.  Thanks for sharing about only taking the mega B6 two weeks before because I think I'll ask my new GYN.  I have pretty regular menses down to almost the day.  I am glad to have people on this board that will share their experiences.  I have learned so much today.  I can't thank you enough...
Perhaps you are not female and/or have no
female children.

I personally didn't use tampons until after my first child. Having a period is uncomfortable enough for a young girl or any woman for that matter.

My daughter is also of a very small build and even the smallest tampons would probably be very uncomfortable but that is beside the point.

The real point here is that she was publically humiliated at a time in her life when she is already extremely self-conscious. The whole boob issue has also recently "developed" and that's another wasp nest. (Sorry sis, once they show up, you are stuck with them.)

This gym teacher has a track record of public humiliation with kids. My older daughter had a sledding accident two years ago and cracked her tail bone and a vertebrae in her lower back. She had a doctor's excuse for absolutely NO participation in PE for nearly six weeks. The school was fine with it. The gym teacher was not.

This teacher is also a neighbor down the road a bit. She's a nasty old hag to say the least. She keeps her dog locked in the garage barking all day long. When it does manage to get out, it runs into the nearest house and wrecks havoc. It has managed to get into our house before and actually chewed the cord to my foot pedal.

I didn't say a word about it. The poor thing was desperate to see daylight, people, and other animals apparently.

So, needless to say, I will be sending her an email this morning and see how she responds. If I still think she is unreasonable and unapologetic, I will forward my email and her response to the district office.

Need female help for DD sm

My DD is away at college.  She is on BCPs and I don't know the brand.  She has irregular bleeding and all sorts of problems and no, I don't think she levels with the clinic where she is seen on campus.

She started her period yesterday before we took her back after a weekend home.  Today, she tells me she doesn't feel like she is in her body, spacy and weird.  She is flowing heavily.  I can't pay her ER bill and I am not so sure we are quite there yet.

I told her to drink lots of water, not to take a hot shower because that will dilate her vessels, start the next pack of pills to see if that will stop it (which is safe to do) and most all, GET TO BED AND SLEEP.

Any other suggestions? She is only 20 and she didn't start until she was 15.  She has been on and off of pills and they all seem to do this.  I could never take them for the same reasons and I want her off them when she is home for the summer because this is just stupid and scary.  She is 4 hours away and I can't get to her easily....oh help!

Thanks so much.

...and why do they specify female?

My female cat does something similar...
She acts like she is wiping her feet like that in the same spot in front of the TV.  Every time she walks past that spot, she does that.  I have no idea why.
Just female problems?

What is it about being near 40??  Was having heavy TOM, started BCPs to help, and have now had a continuous TOM for 23 days.  I am completely exhausted by 7:00 every evening.  Does this sound like just female problems or should I ask for an ultrasound to make sure there is nothing really bad going on?

My female dog usually lifts her
leg to urinate. She learned it at the dog park, watching other dogs. I know it's a dominance thing, but it's embarrassing to have somebody ask if she's male or female, and we say female, and then she goes and lifts her leg and does the back foot scratchy thing like a male! Except her scratchy action is more like a ballet move where the foot is off the ground and she reaches back with her toes pointed and wiggles it in the air. Most dogs are trying to scent-mark, scratching the ground with their foot pads and kicking up mulch and dirt. Apparently it's not worth getting dirty for Sasha - a Siberian that we refer to as our poodle, LOL.
We had a female Rottie who... sm
Would lift her leg to urinate. A lot of times, she would actually squat a little, AND lift her leg at the same time. It was very strange! I don't know how she did it w/o getting urine on herself, but she did. She was very ladylike about it.

In her case, it wasn't dominance of any kind. She was the sweetest, most gentle dog with people and all other dogs. She was the 'omega' of the pack, not a dominant bone in her body, so I think it was just learned behavior.
That's one problem with being female (sm)
Women too often hear that medical problems are related to either our periods or menopause. That doesn't mean we should have to suffer just because of our hormones we can't help. :(

That would have been rotten to start your headaches at age 12. You sound like you have a strong family history of it, too. Nothing helped you or your family?
My female maltese

is 10 now and developed this problem a couple of years ago.  It was not just at night, but anytime she was asleep, napping in my lap or asleep on my pillow snuggled next to my head (not a good way to wake up btw).  It seemed to come as a complete surprise to her, as she woke up during or immediately after urinating, not before.  All of her labs were normal, the only explanation was that it was a hormonal imbalance that occasionally occurs in older female dogs that were spayed at a very early age.  As nearly as I could determine from the records I got from the lady I got her from was that she was about 3-4 months old when she was spayed.  Since dogs can also have unwanted side effects from hormone replacement she was placed on antihistamines which resolved the problem for the most part, but she still gets the late night trip right before bedtime.  Since your dog just started this late in life it may not be from the same thing, but it couldn't hurt, assuming that your dog has been spayed, to consider it as a possible cause if no other explanation is found.  Here is a link to Merck Veterinary Manual online edition page that describes the condition (you may have to cut and paste).

I have two cats, one male and one female-
the female's name is Ophelia, a.k.a. Miss Thing, a.k.a. feefee, feebee or feegirl.

My baby boy's name is Curly, a.k.a. Curls, a.k.a. fattyboy, crybaby boy, or kittyboy. I once decided he should have a Native American name so his full name is Curly Purrsloud Longtail Kittyboy. :D Although now the poor baby has just been diagnosed with diabetes so I may need to make that Curly Purrsloud Longtail takes-insulin-well Kittyboy. :)
I am a 33 y.o. female with an abnormal mammogram. sm

After the test the tech told me to wait so she can run the films by doc to see if everything was okay or if he needed more images. This was my 1st one. She returned and said she needed more images.

I waited 20 minutes.  Then she said you'll be here for a while, he wants to order an ultrasound.  I was so scared by this point.  All by myself.  No explanations.  My breasts are "lumpy" which is why my GYN sent me there in the 1st place.

I rec'd my postcard in the mail that he wants to see me AGAIN for more images. Why? Anyone with this before? He didn't recommend me to a surgeon or anything. Just more images. I haven't heard a word from my GYN either and I'm sure she's gotten the results as it's been a while now.  So, I'm going back next week for more images and I'm scared to death.

I have 3 young boys and a hopeless husband (I mean that in a good way) who can't really function without me.  Anyways, please let me know what you "think."  I just don't know. I do feel sharp pains in my left breast at times.

Female hair loss

I'm wondering if any of you all have experienced, or know someone who has, hair loss.  I'm 32 and for the last few years my hair has been thinning.  Of course, for the last few years I was on Zoloft, and now that I have stopped it we are hoping I soon will once again have a full head of hair, but just in case...

How do you handle it?  Wigs, scarves?  My hair has always been my one vanity, so this is somewhat disturbing.  Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

HC
