Gastric Bypass

I worked in a Bariatric surgeon's office for 3 years and it is pretty cool to watch it!  The doctor's had an open screening for people to attend to see what the procedure is and what exactly it entails and then they could make the choice whether to schedule an appointment with the doctor or not.  Those who scheduled appointments with the doctor were evaluated and put on the South Beach Diet and weighed at every appointment while they were waiting for their insurances to clear their procedure.  Some people did so well on South Beach that they actually chose not to have surgery, but to continue on the diet by themselves with only medical support.  Once your insurance approves it then you are scheduled for surgery, but you typically need a comorbidity in addition to being overweight to get approved such as sleep apnea, depression, or claudication.  The procedure is relatively simple and I would not suggest Lap Banding as it is not nearly as effective as gastric bypass and a lot of people have their lap band turned into a complete bypass.  After surgery your stomach is reduced and cannot hold anymore than 1 ounce of food or liquid at a time.  You puree most of your foods and your supplements until you are able to stretch it a little bit, but the weight comes off rather quickly...most people lost 100 pounds in a couple of years.  I'm not sure if this helps you, but I hope that it does!!!!

Take Care and Good Luck!

Gastric Bypass....

I'm thinking of having gastric bypass.  Was hoping to get some responses from those who have had this surgery or know someone who has and if you would recommend it?

Gastric Bypass
I had mine 4 years ago---best thing I ever did for myself. No problems. You MUST do the research on the surgeon, that is the most important thing. Keep in mind you still have to watch your diet the rest of your life, but I feel it was well worth it! Email me if you would like
Gastric Bypass
I'm having what it called a mini gastric bypass next Wednesday. It's a bit different from the other bypasses out there. You can check it out at clos.net. Dr. Rutledge is the doctor and he did Gil Gerard's surgery. You know, Buck Rogers. You can even see his surgery on the website. Dr. Rutledge makes us go through a very rigerous process before he will do the surgery. You have to do a lot of research and make sure you understand what you are getting into. I'm very excitied and can't wait unitl next week!!
Gastric Bypass

I'm having gastric bypass tomorrow and was wondering if anyone here has already had it and could tell me what to expect after that first week or two after surgery.  I am having laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass.

TIA!

Gastric Bypass
My husband and I will be having gastric bypass on the same day! We are the first couple this doctor has ever done without spacing them out by 1-week. We are still waiting for our surgery date but have done all our preop evaluations. We are looking at last week of Sept, first week of Oct. We've had numerous people in our family that have had the procedure and the other poster is right, do exactly what your doctor tells you and you will do fine. BEST OF LUCK! Deena
Has anyone here at gastric bypass
and is/was your insurance through your employer? Is there a way to find out if the benefit is covered before you accept a position? Company I am considering has bcbs and I know bcbs does cover, but not necessarily all carriers have this as an included benefit. Please no nasty replies. I am not interested in personal opinions, just whether anyone knows if coverage is provided by any of the companies that solicit these boards.
Vitamin D deficiency?

Anyone ever been diagnosed with this?

My rheumatologist's office called this morning to tell me that my blood tests showed a deficiency. My doctor is going to call this afternoon to discuss it with me. Apparently, it's not so uncommon in regions that lack sunshine?

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass? Anyone have a

Gastric bypass surgery~~Anyone out there
Do tell!!  The good and the bad!
I wish all physicians would explain to patients..
that although they are prescribing a medication which is primarily prescribed for XYZ, that is has also been found helpful in treating ABC.  A friend of mine who had recent rotator cuff surgery was given a new script by his pain clinic physician for a chief complaint of increased pain.  My friend looked up the medication on the internet, only to find that it was prescribed for depression.  He was under the impression he was given a pain medication prescription.  Needless to say, he expressed his displeasure to the physician regarding this and as a result, has lost trust in him and has left his practice.
That's true, I actually snipped a few off patients
when I worked as an MD assistant, if you can believe that one.
I know but we forget how uninformed a lot of patients are (sm)
Many people, like my own parents, just think of medical professionals as godlike and all-knowing. They don't even think they have a right to question, they just assume the medical person knows better. This man almost had his head cut open. :( and all he had was a kidney stone
calcium deficiency anyone?
and does yours hurt down to and including the bones? Were you diagnosed with a deficiency or did you just try the supplement on your own? Thanks.

Does that make sense if the doctor sees patients?
My mom is supposed to get a hysterectomy. Her PCP has referred her to a doctor - she was looking him up in her directory to make sure he was covered under her insurance.

I'm so confused! ha
Vertical nystagmus has been associated with magnesium deficiency and

Read up on omega fatty acids - often a deficiency (sm)
can cause those types of symptoms. I have been giving them to my son and he does seem to be calmer. My daughter eats them in the omega acid enriched eggs, son does not, but I found some gummy omega fatty acid supplements at Target. Do a search on it and you will find tons of info. I would try other things before I tried medication and only turn to medication if it was absolutely necessary.
My cousin had a bypass, take it 1 day at a time, and do what the doc tells you. nm

Vitamin B6
I was told helps with PMS symptoms, but I don't know about St. John's wort.  Look at the ingredients, is it a combo?
My GYN said to take vitamin B6.
But, I suffered so bad with this along with heavy cycles (14 days on) that I finally had a hysterectomy (left with cervix and ovaries).  The back pain was horrendous as well during these times.  Finally, after 8 years (I'll be 38 in a few months), I have found relief from the horrible PMS.  I'd go from crying to screaming to loving to hating to pitiful to in bed to not wanting to go to bed...  Are you getting the picture?  These emotions lasted 2 weeks and then was "on" for 2 weeks and I never had relief, never until I had the hysterectomy.  I felt like a million bucks 2 hours postop - no lie!  I was home within 24 hours (pleaded with GYN to just let me go home) and I have a new woman since.  I doubt they'll do a hysto though just for PMS, but like I said I've been there and the only thing she recommended was vitamin B6 and Yoga.  Definitely see a doctor though....
vitamin B complex (nm)

I take Biotin which is a B vitamin.

Vitamin K does exactly the contrary, it
COUNTERACTS the blood thinning.

So, people whose blood has become too thin by possible overdosing on blood thinners, SHOULD eat foods containing a lot of vitamin K.
They should especially eat yoghurt which contains a lot of vitamin K.

Aspirin is a strong blood thinner due to containing salicylates.

There are also a lot of foods that contain salicylates and people who take prescription blood thinners, like Coumadin, Heparin, Plavix etc... should avoid those.

You can Google foods that act as blood thinners, opposite foods that contain a lot of vitamin K.

They have the opposite effect.

I think green vegatables also contain vitamin K and will help stop excessive bleeding.

NO BASHING, please!

Vitamin D question

I don't get outside much these days and wonder if anyone knows if you can get vitamin D from sun coming through the window?

My mom has osteoporosis, so I figure I better do what I can!

Thanks.

You can take a Vitamin D supplement. nm

Vitamin D is very important

A lack of vitamin D is the cause of ricketts.  It doesn't happen that often in the US any more because of all of the fortified foods we get, but if you don't go outside much at all, it can be a real concern.  There was a story about a hugely obese man - like 900 pounds obese - who had horrible pain and it turned out to be a lack of vitamin D.  THe only way your body can metabolize vitamin D is by exposure to sunlight.

Doctors always want to make sure that women who are older or at risk for osteoporosis take Calcium and Vitamin D.  The Vitamin D helps the body metabolize the calcium.

You should probably take a calcium supplement as well, if you aren't already.

Hope your rib pain goes away!

Which vitamin for hair and nails?
Is it vitamin D? My hair will only get to a certain length and seems like it stops growing. Any ideas on something to help it grow more?
Vitamin Water XXX flavor and
I go through about a pitcher a day of green tea that I make with raw sugar and honey.  And, of course, Welch's -- it is so good for you.
LOL! Yogurt is good as it contains a lot of vitamin K
it helps with blood clotting.

If people have not enough blood platelets, then they suffer from

Thrombocytopenia.

No bashing, please.

I am only a humble MT who learned a lot through atudying and MTing.
Thanks!
Try Palmer's Cocoa Butter with vitamin E.
I had a similar problem and this worked for me.  My husband even uses it and likes it.  I like the unscented type.  Good Luck!
I read that a lack of vitamin D and boron can

cause psoriasis.  The article said that a lot of vegetarians don't get psoriasis because they have a diet high in boron which helps with the conversion of vitamin D.  It is because vegetarians eat food high in boron and vitamin D, i.e., veggies, fruit, etc, and the soild the veggies are grown in is high in these nutrients.

There was a post on here about helping psoriasis so I thought I would throw that in!  Hope it helps.

Sorry, I meant ..'There are creams which contain vitamin K.'..sm
And, BTW, vitamin C and calcium are very good for preventing wrinkles.
Cranberry juice may work better than vitamin....

Is this the Vitamin Water that Coca Cola bought?
I had one for the first time today, fruit punch. Good stuff :)
The intake of vitamin K helps against spider veins. ..... sm
But be careful, do not take too much, only from food sources, yoghurt is a very good source of vitamin K.
There are creams which contain vitamin C.

If you want to take supplemental vitamin K in tablet form, first check with your doctor regarding the dosage.

I had some spider veins in my face, but those disappeared when I started to put vaseline in my face.
I had heard Vitamin D was a good source for bones,
of course and being as I along with others on here do not get out as much as we should sometimes, had heard maybe I should take. I have pain in my ribs (checked for other things and scans, x-rays turned out ok) so started this morning with 4000 units. Anyone else take and if so what dosage? My ribs were hurting before I got out of bed and since seem to be feeling some better.
I have heard L-Lynsine (vitamin) is good to take. Supposedly it decreases sm
the time of outbreak, but also minimizes you from future outbreaks if you add it to your daily vitamin regimen.
Might try valerian root capsules or 5HTP or melatonin, in vitamin section
