of myself. Started in 1970 or l971. The last few years those old docs have been dying off and I got in the habit of going by the funeral home the nite before just to pay my respects and sign the book. One doc was our local version of Red Duke if you are familiar with him, an old country boy from a ranch in TX who still called his dad Pappy. He is still alive, but his wife had died and I went by there when I got off work. This was one of the men whose manner of dictation entertained us uproariously over the years (she came into my office wheezing like a packhorse going uphill. She is an inveterate cigarette smoker - and so was he!) and would come to you personally over something and you could go to him, too. Another was a cardiologist from India, believe it or not, who has been here over 30 years now. These were a couple of my many mentors. I was just going to sign the book and leave since no one really was there yet but family. But no, he saw me at the alcove and came down to get me. Come here, hon, he said. His best friends were both there, one a vet from the sticks like him and a cardiologist from Maryland, go figure. I commented on the yellow roses on his wife's casket and he said that's what she was, my yellow rose of Texas. A couple of these guys were one generation removed from horse and buggy doctors. Another era gone.
