In three years I will be retiring. I plan to hang on until then. If I had more than five years to work, I would get out of MTing. I made waaay more in the 80s and 90s than I do now--and with less work, too, I might add. I would never want a child of mine to become an MT--too much insecurity, too much dishonesty. Of course, there are some wonderful companies out there (I work for one) but by and large, I advise people to be really, really cautious.

It is also sad to see how many of their recruiters really have no knowledge of our industry and how a few have no knowledge of business manners, either. A while ago I talked to a recruiter from a company that advertises all the time and she was so rude I was just shocked. Can you imagine working for someone like that? Sure didn't represent the company well.
Unless its full moon at the ER night!!
or a rocking night at Hilo Hospital!
They get you on board by promising the moon - sm
Then cannot deliver because they overhired.  I guess they think people do this as a hobby (and some might) where you don't really need the money to oh, say, eat, pay your mortgage, make car payments, etc.  Then they want us being flexible, which means checking for work 24/7.  Used to be one could make really great money at this (and some still do), but it seems the majority of us are hanging on by a thread to what used to be a great career choice.  I finally decided enough is enough and am moving out of MT after 12 years.
Run as fast as you can. They promise the moon but do not follow through. sm
Specifically, they promise high volume radiology but I ran out of work constantly. They kept stringing me along about some big new account starting in May but it never happened. I am thankful that I kept my other job on the sly.
