VR... no coffee for me... bleeding fingers
I have been reading a lot of the posts to get the gist of VR and the line rate and the different programs. I just started a new job about 2-3 weeks ago and as of today I am finally getting up my speed on the VR... takes a while to learn those short cuts!. However, the pay is very low and I am evaluating whether I will stay or not. I am readlly between a rock and a hard place and SO need to supplement my income from my SS widow benefits.
The company that hired me has 2 programs, one of them being EScript that you are all talking about that the words are just flying by while you drink coffee. I'm lucky if I can get up to get a cup!! I am using Enterprise Express Editor for mostly speech and very little text (which pays better by the way). Has anybody heard of this VR that I just mentioned? I would love to just put my feet up and relax a bit while the words are flying by.
Excuse my typos. Not enough coffee yet! :) nm

Fingers not working. I meant between companies. sm
On rereading my post, I should have said often times the negative posts and great posts. Not all.
There are some bad companies out there. There are some great companies out there. It is hard to sort through the trolls and cheerleaders.
ps: Please excuse typos! "Hands-working-faster-than-brain syndrome!" haha (nm)
.
Wow..no coffee this morning. I meant "anyone" NOT another. Headed for the coffee pot...right n
so many what? you need to place post properly (NM)
.
I was properly chastised in another thread below
for explaining about accepting 7 cpl for pay. Those of us old timers remember when the MTs ruled supreme. We were in great demand and the demand would often result in a bidding war for our services. An MT would get an offer of maybe a cent more per line, give notice, and the company he/she worked for would quickly up the ante. That was in the days when MTSOs knew that the only commodity they had was their MTs. We had benefits too, company paid insurance, vacations, sick pay, holidays and no one worked weekends unless they wanted to. Along came the work-at-home privilege and there went all of the above benefits right out the window. I can't even remember when I last had benefits, back in the late 80s maybe? Then came the MT schools promising the moon while working at home in your jammies and kicking out 100s of wantabe MTs every week. So what we have is an over saturated market. Just look at the jobs board. There are hundreds and hundreds of views on each and every ad. It's a jolly wonder anyone ever gets hired. Years of experience most likely isn't an asset in this day and time either. If by chance the recruiter actually gets to a resume with 20 or 30 years experience, it wouldn't surprise me if they would pass right on over it for fear that MT might actually ask for and expect a living wage. Back in the day when we were paid on gross lines one could make a very good living at 6-7 cpl but with a 65-character, no headers, no footers, free demographic typing, etc. there is no way anyone is going to make a living unless they have the best of the best dictators. I don't know about VR but I don't personally know anyone (and I know a LOT of MTs) who is making a living at 4 cpl. I believe them, they have no reason to lie to me. I've done Q.A. which I hate, but being a fast typist, I could type a report faster than I could do a full listen Q.A. so VR would seem about the same to me.
I think that MT may evolve into something different with VR and EMR but I think there will be jobs in the foreseeable future. Likely those jobs are going to require a college education in the not distant future. An RN degree might be worth pursuing. The problem is the pay. Most people need to be able to count on X amount of dollars during a month. I've said before and I say again, MT needs to go back under the DIRECT control of the hospitals. With available technology, there is no need for MTSOs anymore. They used to serve a purpose, not anymore except to provide really good paying jobs for the top brass. Hospitals could not possibly be saving money by outsourcing their MT and there is certainly no excuse for offshoring when there are AMERICANS begging to work and some will work for almost nothing and with the current trend nothing is what they are going to be working for, 2-3 CPL would not support one person let alone a family.
I am doing what I can to help as I feel I owe something to those who come along after me but who are far less fortunate. I'm an old MT with nothing to do but work to try to make life better for others in other areas as well as MT. I have discussed the issue of MT as it relates to health care costs with my Congressman who happens to be a friend and coincidentally is also a physician. He has promised to discuss it with another physician colleague and promised to bring this matter up in Congress. I feel sure he would like to hear other MT stories. I don't know if it would be proper to post his contact information on this board but if anyone would like to email their story and their thoughts to me I would be more than happy to forward them to him or you can find him by researching for the Representative for the Third District of Arkansas. Don't forget to write your own Senator and Congressman! Write and write again until they listen! I know it is hard to trust anyone these days but I assure you I am trustworthy and I would like to help all of you. Sometimes one has to stand up and be counted in order to bring about any kind of change for anything. I could just go away (as some have suggested) and paint my gourds but I really do have a caring heart.
WRONG - these companies are not acting properly
encountered the same thing with SOME companies listed above. Or, there's the company who hires you, sets up a start date, and then you're e-mailing and calling, and finally receive a call from some computer tech who tells you the lady who hired you is now on vacation for two weeks. But, he'd be happy to try and help you???!!!!! What in the world is up with these companies? Don't go with anyone that does not keep in touch and respond to you in a timely manner, because that is exactly what you will be dealing with when you have questions and problems as an employee.
I can't figure out how to use the shorthand properly (brain dead I guess) (sm)
Maybe I haven't taken enough time to learn it (I can be a bit impatient with myself), but I seem to have a mental block and have about given up. I used to have Smartype with my old system (before DQS) and wonder if it worked with Vianeta. Anyway, anyone out here, what do you use other than the ShortHand that comes with it?
Hey Fingers! That is what I was sm
thinking so far...it seems like it use to be 25 years ago and I haven't started.
I ready and willing to bust my hind-end for this company because they have been so very kind to me so far. When people treat you right, it makes you want to work. you are right, you don't find this kind of stuff anymore. Too many new companies out there that don't have a clue and just want to treat MTs like factory line workers. The companies that have been here awhile (not the Q), you know what I mean, know that if they want experience and quality, they gotta treat you right!
Congrats on your job too!
To Fingers
I am sooo happy you found an old-time MT company!! Been doing this for 22 years and am very discouraged and depressed. Didn't think there were any left like it used to be. That was when transcription was fun!! I would love to find a small company where I could just work the same 2 or 3 docs for a decent wage. Congratulations!
Fingers
You have said it well. I could have written your post. (We likely worked for the same big nasty MTSO.) I found myself getting migraine headaches and I actually broke teeth from grinding so hard at night due to the stress. I decided I could either continue to take the BS or I could put myself on the market. At the time I was pushing 60 and like you, I was scared, but I did it. I am now with a company where I am treated with kindness and respect, you know, like HUMANS are supposed to treat each other? And I am never out of work. Yes, my new company is demanding but at the kind of dough they pay, they have the right to be. My age and experience seemed to be a plus for me. I truly thought I would never get a job I liked as much as UCal (where I worked before the big nasty MTSO--UCal went to India one day). But I did. So I got stuck in the big, nasty MTSO and was mistreated and I just one day got mad as h*** and decided I wasn't going to take it anymore, not the demeaning conference calls, the clock in, clock out, be told I was spending too much time on a break. Uh-uh. There ARE good jobs out there. It might take a little trial and error, but if you are really good at what you do, you will find the right one. Good luck to all who are looking. I have been there and I know how hard it is. But I also know you CAN do it! Don't accept anything less than respect.
Fingers
What you say is true, and their silliness really does affect the outcome of their business. Methinks they are forgetting one of the cardinal rules of the marketplace: PAY PEANUTS, GET MONKEYS. If they get these 6 cpl newbies, they will get 6 cpl quality. the effects will be harmful and by then it will be too late. Accounts will be lost and their quality MTs will be long gone.
Fingers
There is simply no work on my accounts. I am getting 300 lines a day (and I usually do 300 lines per hour). I agree about low work being more stressful than no work. My great fear is this: What if the work does not pick up after Labor Day? I really want to stay with MDI but this is getting to be a bit much (or perhaps I should rather say a bit too LITTLE.....)
Fingers
Thanks. That is why I am waiting, but I have to be honest and say that I am investigating other opportunities outside of MTing. I think the whole industry is about to go belly-up. I do hope that you are right and that things will pick up. If I am not back to my full lines by the end of September, I will have to look at other opportunities and take the best one that presents itself. I have set that as my deadline. My income has dropped by 50% and we cannot survive on that. Thanks for your support and good luck to you, too! Good luck to all of us!
Tell that to my dying fingers.
x
To fast fingers ....
Your post on Unlimited LD was way at the bottom so I figured I would post a new thread ...
I am unsure on who else there is that has Unlimited LD services that are indeed unlimited. With AT&T and MCI, they have a hidden clause that states it is NOT unlimited and that you have to get a biz line, yada yada yada, which costs hundreds of dollars.
So my suggestion is if you dont feel comfortable with going through Vonage, then maybe check with your cable/dsl companies that offer VOIP ( voice over IP) that gives you LD services .... OH wait, Go to best buy, they have VOIP adapters through diff companies! I totally forgot about that
fingers; question for you
Hi,
May I email you privately about e-MTS? I work for MQ, too. Thanks.
request to fingers
Hi fingers. If you dont mind, I am out of work since April and trying to find somewhere paying okay. I left Medquist and they called me asking to come back. I am desparate at this point and am thinking about it. How do I contact e-MTS. HEEEELLLLLP. Here is my email address: baker699@adelphia.net
Will keep my fingers crossed
Thank you for your response. It makes me optimistic to know that you are getting contacted...will keep my fingers crossed that I'll start hearing from some of them soon. Hopefully they are all just really busy and working through all the resumes they get. Good luck with your job hunt!
I'm with you Cranky/Fingers
Too many MTs only worry about themselves and running up their line count, they don't stop to think that this type of behavior leads to the company losing the account, because the client is seeing this and come time for contract renewal and out the company goes. Then who loses? All the good MTs on the account and the company.
What I suggest is that you get those fingers
working to make money before that rate changes. Don't waste time on here. This does not pay you a thing, just gets your blood pressure up.
FINGERS - response
To clarify once again. ANYBODY- anybody who works like the sentence below, IS ENTITLED TO A RAISE period.
There is some wrong attitude inside -- if one feels a raise is not deserved then society as a whole and/or some other person instilled this and it is wrong wrong wrong. Women are in general put down, men do it and even women do it to other women (I suspect to curry favor with men)
YOUR SENTENCE)
I could work 16 hours a day 7 days a week and then some, but I am told that does not entitle me to a pay increase
THIS IS A SAD ATTITUDE. MEN WOULD GET ONE FOR MUCH LESS EFFORT.
Wow, do I need my coffee
Don't know what I initially searched for but did it again and found all kinds of recent posts, sorry. Would still like any other info anyone wants to share.
Just get some more coffee LOL
:)
Exactly why CMT and $1 might get you a cup of coffee but
so that it requires a college education, not some lame exam by AHDI, then yes, it might actually mean something to someone other than AHDI and their cronies. No one else cares, sad truth. We are transcribing medical records of physicians, not creating our own content or treating patients ourselves, and it does not require a college education for most people. Physicians do not see CMT and gush because they probably don't even know what it is. AAMT, err, I mean AHDI is not that well known, not well recognized, or most importantly, not well respected enough to elevate the status of this profession. They are behind a lot of changes implemented that have served to do nothing more than lower the standards for MTs everywhere, in fact. Do your research. Just the fact that AHDI says it's in my best interest proves to me it's not!
Obviously the fat cat needs her coffee
I meant to say in case of a buyout of one of them. I think I am extra scared because of what is happening in California. The whole state is about to declare bankruptcy.
Not any more it won't get you a cup of coffee...
... of course, it won't get you tomorrow's newspaper anymore, either.
I remember when you could get coffee for 10 cents at Sambo's.
Okay, so I'm older than dirt and I just showed my age. :)
let's see..10 fingers...10 toes...one nose..sm
and maybe even my backside..I was speaking for myself as well as the others who have thought your posts single-sighted, single minded, and rather on the sour grape side. I also did not see any name calling, though, so you were wrong about that part.
Hey Fingers! I start next week. sm
Had to decide to put in cable internet instead of what I had. It is installed Monday. I have everything I need, people have been wonderful and I haven't even started yet. Even got a nice gift for MT week and haven't typed a line yet!
I sure feel like a valued employee before I even start!
Thanks for asking! How you doing?
Not awake yet..no coffee.. How about That not They... LOL Nm
Wow, I almost spit coffee everywhere!!
How did I miss this story??? I used to work for Transcription Stat and Kim Kaneko. Not surprised this sort of thing caught up with her at all. Can you say line padding? Statute of limitations is up on this and all by now but not surprised to hear about Kim and TS' business as usual. Kim herself wasn't so bad but she had the uncanny knack for hiring the most unstable, mentally ill MTs that were ever forced to work together in one room (no at home MTing at that time).
This raises the question: We all know that insanity doesn't just run through our profession--it gallops full speed ahead!! So, do you think the off-shore MTs are anywhere near as nutty as the US MTs?
A. Of course they are! Who could do this ridiculous profession without being driving quietly insane.
B. Of course they are! And you must be insane yourself to even question this!!
Anyway, thanks for the interesting morning!
Oops, need more coffee
nm
I smell the coffee
:)
Whoops, the cat needs more coffee!
I meant to say if we really are PROFESSIONALS, not PROFESSIONS. Too early on this coast! :)
You should not point fingers at what you don't know. I have worked for Lee and KS for 4 years an
if anything, she treats us BETTER than any other company, which is why the changes. They are not 2-week changes. They are not unprofessional. They are changes that happen in every company in every industry unless they are stagnant. Growth brings change. There is no damage control to be done. Just stating facts and sharing information so that MTs looking for a position have the correct information. Good company, good pay, good benefits, good account, stability. They aren't going anywhere, their accounts are happy and the MTs on staff are happy except for those that cannot be happy anywhere.
Thanks heard back and crossing my fingers
nm
meant *work for* sorry..tired fingers..nm:)
...
Wow...congratulatins, Fingers! Sounds wonderful :0
nm
You can explain to 'this one' until your fingers cramp
She's apparently ESL and will NEVER understand the point you are making. I don't even think she's an MT, just someone here killing time and sorely lacking in comprehension.
Save yourself the frustration. I think the rest of us understand exactly what you're trying to convey.
Sorry, that should be thinks…fingers too fast today
NM
They will pry my expander out of my cold dead fingers.
And THEN they'll find out what Cranky REALLY means......
I'm not a coffee drinker either, but a travel
mug is good to drink anything if you are going to have it sitting on your desk beside your equipment while you work.
Sorry, I had not had coffee when I responded earlier ... sm
best of luck to you too. I'm sorry that you are having to go through all this. I think most of us just want to work hard and do a good job and be treated fairly by our employers. Seems so simple, but in my experience it has been hard to find. I'm moving on and hopefully will have found a better employer.
snarf - coffee up the nose
Sorry it was like that BUT thanks for a great story to cheer up a gray monday morning!
OH MY.. how about GRATEFUL..not grated.. I need MORE COFFEE. LOL NM
nm, i must have been doing something wrong, now there's a bunch, thanks! more coffee.....
..
I think they are waking up and smelling the coffee
I think it is a combination of getting caught up with new hires and realizing they are losing good MTs over the mandatory OT. I have a feeling they have lost quite a few recently. No company in their right mind makes their entire crew work OT for 4-5 months. That is crazy! I'm still planning on leaving because I dread next summer. Just taking my time shopping around the right company for me.
No problem. Before coffee .. thought I was
just a little confused there! You mean I'm not the only Wendy out there?
Those coffee cups were re-runs, they sent them out
XX
Smelling the coffee and not the roses.
Many of us have traversed the slippery slope of mergers and none of them worked well for most. Having any feelings of guilt is ridiculous. This is not your fault. Your company sold out, took the money, banked it and gave you a cute little thanks for a job well done, if that. Transcend may or may not prove to be a good fit. I know so many who have found that not to be so with rigid policies and the overall feeling that you can be replaced in a minute. My advice is to keep you eyes and ears open and to decide for yourself based on the way you are treated and your work load and whether or not YOU decide this is a good fit. We can still determine our own destinies but we have to step up and quietly take control of it alone and without much fanfare. Further to that you best learn what is going on in the industry and prepare for more technical changes and an increase in templating or VR. Learn all you can so that you approach a new employer with solid skills. Many smaller companies have not prepared for this and do not have the cash or the heart to move it forward and thus you are now swimming with the sharks. Take a deep breath and market yourself just like the suits do. Good luck with it as luck is also part of the mix.
