I really have it pretty easy.....
But I do not discourage others from trying the profession. I do mention that schooling is a must and to watch out for scams. I do tell them that I've worked 25 years to get where I am today and that it is easy for me and yes I do have it made. It is much easier to transcribe from home as an IC at this point than to be everyone's fill-in at an on-site facility. When my work got backed up, no one could help.
Mothers ask about this profession because almost everyone in society including 5 year olds are computer literate. It wasn't alway that way, but I never would tell someone they are asking stupid questions.
I actually like to talk about my work, but they usually lose interest after I start explaining how I get the work and the fact that I don't really work a set schedule and that there is ebb and flow; hence, your salary can go up and down... blah, blah, blah.... It starts sounding like the adults talking on an episode of Charlie Brown... wonk wonk wonk.... 
P/S: My SIL decided she wanted to be an MT, went to school for 4 years, landed a job in a hospital and quit b/c it was too hard.... GO FIGURE!
pretty easy to maneuver
It comes with lots of symbols which can be disengaged because I think they are distracting. I mainly just use CTRL plus the arrow keys to maneuver through the report. If you have a good dictator, you are basically just reading the report. If you have a bad one, there are more corrections to be made then. All in all, it is as easy to get through as the DocQScribe ASR I used to work on when I was with MQ.
Personally, I like voice because it gives my hands and arms a break. If you have good dictators, then you can make some money. I think this is true for those of us who are not real fast typists to begin with. I can see the problem with those who have mastered making abbreviations and who are fast typists. They are probably slowed down with voice, whereas I am able to make better lines with it, if given good dictators.

I have no interest in working for Keystrokes, but had to check out their new and improved benefit package. It is pretty bad unless you are unlucky enough to have a couple of deaths in the family.
You could say that about pretty much every co.
You know what they say about opinions...I have seen just about every major national company being asked about on these boards at one time or another and there are always people who will have negative things to say about them. On the other hand, there are always people who will say positive things as well. The only thing you can do is educate yourself about each company by going to their website and contacting the company directly to get answers. Otherwise, it's all a lot of hearsay. JMO

It is very difficult to go after foreign entities due to cost and resources. I won't work for one ever. This is why many con artists in different countries get away with it. There is not much we can do.

for some reasons with all the new accounts for administrative reasons they felt easier to catagorize that way. It is all one company and everything is the same. Only the accounts are designated 1 and 2.

I'm pretty new
at TT myself. I've only been there a few months, but I'm very happy working for them. Have any of you asked to be taken off an account and given a different one? There are times when I really struggle with my account, and I wonder what would happen if I asked for a different one? I'm a little nervous though...what if the newer account is more of a struggle? I would be anxious about learning a new account too. Sigh. Any thoughts? Thanks!

SE and IC are pretty much the same - sm
The only difference is with SE you get part of the tax paid, whereas IC you pay it all. You have no benefits with an SE status except being able to set when you want to work, that's it. You do get to have the same tax deductions with the SE as an IC would have too.
It has been pretty low for at least the last 3
months at my company. Some accounts will dump a bunch of work on Saturday and then we have OT for 2 days, and then not enough work during the week. We do get paid for downtime though, so it isn't as bad as most have it.
I think I have everything pretty
well summed up. I did basically what just my opinion has done, summed up all the points that everyone had given me. I found a couple of more stats on how many more MT's are going to be added in India at a couple of different companies in the next 18 months.
I do have to mention when I first started talking to this reporter he knew already about the lawsuit with the Q infact he brought it up.
So stand-by I think we have it summed up. I will post a link to the story so everyone can read it.

Doesn't matter if QT says they are not closing or not selling, it is all in what the account decides what will force the hand. You have one big account, lose one big account, you do the math.

All that you do is hit F6 and it brings up all of the old report. As far as I can tell, they go back about a year.

and have a grand time with it! Try explaining it to the hospitals that want to outsource to certain national companies that don't do a background check on employees or that the threat to take SS# just by when doctors dictate them is easy - can you imagine how easy it is for the offshore companies to do it. If I can do it in the states working for a national company, imagine what the offshore companies can do!

You're right the girl probably didn't have a clue of how poorly she was doing and thats not playing fair. However, training is not easy. Companies don't want to lose people, especially if they're not paying them much, soooo you're stuck being positive positive positive even when the work is horrible, and people tend to get offended at the least little bit of feedback. Its a bit of a squishy position and at times the person training has to go to great lengths to justify their own position. Not easy I assure you. I for one was told I was sending too much feedback, apparently learning how to do things right was not at the top of these MTs list. You cannot completely blame the trainer, but management who lets the MT call the shots.

It's not as easy to do that now as it used to be sm
If you're SE or IC, you can do that, but with most companies going to employee, MT can only work 40 hours and if one can't count on working extra, which goes into overtime and not always offered, it makes having just one job not feasible if MT wants to make X amount of dollars in as much time as it takes her/him.
I wish I could just do one job with OT when offered, but I really need the security of having the PT to get what I need to make ends meet.

I really feel badly for you. Sadly, that's why company has the reputatation it does. They are more concerned about happiness of offshore MTs.

there will be no work. They will want you to type prn but demand you live up to a line count and schedule they will not promise work to fill, thus it ends up prn for you, and great for them. Sorry, just the facts. Imagine a company that was honest and actually hired for prn. There's never be anything comparing what it is like for full time or part time these days. JIMHO
Very easy---
go into program files, find ShortHand file, click on that, that is where all the things are. Go to the SPF files, find which one you have your abbreviations in, you had to have named it something (you can check the opened shorthand and look at the tab on the bottom that shows what you use for your abbeviations), copy that file (I use a fast whatchamacall it that you plug in) or you can copy in a separate file until you can copy it to a removeable file, just paste it somewhere, then when you want to copy it to another computer with the Shorthand program on it, just paste it in the shorthand file (like where you copied it from on the other computer). When you open up the Shorthand file, you will have to click on the new shorthand files and add it so it will put a tab at the bottom.

Thats easy for you to say when you are getting offered 8 and 9 cpl. I am just testing and testing and testing and testing and not even getting offered anything. I need work and if I am offered 7 cpl typing for 1 or 2 dictators I will take it because you can still make money at that. I don't mind working 2 jobs because that way you always have something to type.

Some are better in different areas and worse in others and vice versa! Just gotta go with the company you can make money with and forget about the rest of the nonsense!
has been pretty much on time for me
I've been with SoftScript for over a year and have only had my check deposited late a couple of times. It was deposited early an equal amount of times. Apparently if all timesheets would have been done on time, checks would have been sent out and deposited today.
