I have found that much depends on the account. I did a free-standing surgical center and made my best money there. It had fewer specialties and dictators. I had normals out the wazoo too.
I have typed hospital accounts for the past 8 or 9 months. More types of surgery because much of it is inpatient, not outpatient so much. I get about the same line counts as I have always had, but I don't have the normals I once did, so while I have the same line counts, I am typing more physically.
OPs are an entity unto themselves. Once learned, you get to where you can do about any OP note and I am there now. They are not difficult, but they are challenging to learn. No meds, but you have to get your jollies looking up every new hip replacement hardware or new type of suture and clamp. If you change from one region of the company to another you'll find they use very different equipment and you adjust. As far as normals, OPs are the most effectively normaled report there is...if you can make them, track them and use them.
I dunno, I love my OP notes and I am getting to do some vascular surgery these days which I have found I absolutely love and have had little exposure to previously. It is a nice mix of specialties, which is another point. You have to have a lot more terminology in many specialties if you do OPs, more so than any other report in acute care.
