Yeah, work ethic! My parents were wealthy

and both inherited big bucks from their parents. My mother never worked a day in her life, including not caring for her kids. My Dad had a nice job. They made me work starting at age 12 to 13 as well. Work ethic? I went from being a kid to having to be an adult at 12. I never did anything fun on the weekends with my peers, like football games, soccer games - I had to work. I worked every day after school, and every weekend. And now I'm still plodding along working in my 50's. My kids don't have to work at 12 and 13. I want them to enjoy life while they can. This old work horse has great ethics, but had no childhood.

Where did work ethic go?
I am currently doing recruiting for a company. I hired 5 people who were very interested and then I get one excuse after another why they can't train today. I find this frustrating. Then when I do get someone hired, they are sloppy, uneducated, and complain about everything. I see all these posts that say I want more money, but if you are doing your job without work ethic, why would an MTSO want to pay you more? IMO that is why the pay rates are so low. You get so many that are too lazy to work and want more money!!?? If you all want the rates to go UP, please have some work ethic, do not lie on your resumes, and start doing your jobs irregardless of what your pay starts at. If you do the right thing, you are more likely to get a raise.
In my most recent experience it went out the door. I was working a job and a half, 4 hrs at Walmart, 6 to 10pm. Then 11pm to 7am for my fulltime job. I showed up at 5:45pm every eve for 3 months. Ask several times for more training, but their system just puts you in the trenches to do the best you can on your own. My 90 day evaluation rolls around, department manager calls me into the back office, already has the form filled out, I got beats for attendance. Meets for everything else, except below in the zoneing area. Ask me if I had anything to say, I said Walmart Training sucks. And I'd ask for training several times. . .and to write that down. Next day the Store Assistant Manager tells me that I'm to put all the returns back on the shelf before I leave the store that night, and I'm to call her before I leave. 10pm I call her, she says some other new manager will come to the unit. 10:06pm I sells my last item, log off the register, turn out the lights, grab my coat and walk to the back to punch out. Made me 5 minutes late for my other job. (First time ever, and I'm never late. Not in 38 years of working. So in my case I guess my work ethic walked out the door.
Cheers,
Steve J

The work ethic has plummeted everywhere, not just MT. sm
On one of those TV magazine shows a few years ago, the employers interviewed said the young workers these days have no ambition, no initiative, expect top dollar, and want everything handed to them. The employers said they preferred hiring older workers and retirees to get a good job done, but younger ones were cheaper to hire.
In the MT business, the older, experienced, expert MTs are retiring, injured, or plain burned out. Those of us fortunate enough to work for nationals who pay us what we're worth will hang on as long as we have jobs, watching the rest of the jobs going offshore, unfortunately.
MTSOs should be rewarding their good MTs, rather than taking advantage of them, and they sure do take advantage!!
Work Ethic and the American MT
I just had to say something about the disparaging remarks made against the American MT. I think they are the gold standard of the industry. I have seen the work sent from Third World MTs. Full read QA often translates to 95% rewrite. I feel even stronger about owners of companies using the Third World MTs. Many of the offices warehouse hundreds of sweatshop transcriptionists who cannot leave until they reach their quota. Any woman should be ashamed of exploiting these women and then trying to exploit the American QA by paying them slave wages to bring their work up to a standard that would fool many clients who do not know where their work is being sent. I applaud any work that mistakenly gets sent to the client before a complete rewrite by an American editor. The client should see the value their money is getting. There is nothing more reprehensible than women getting rich by oppressing other women and what the American MTs are being paid should be an embarrassment. Please do not tell me about your overhead....every person living has expenses - what makes the MTSO's more important?
I am a Canadian MT who will not QA work done in Third World countries. It is a personal choice. I will not train them in medical terminology or the English language. I have too much respect for the hardworking, dedicated women in North American working under the tyranny of companies who monitor their washroom breaks to help the Third World MTSOs make more money off the sweat of their MTs.
Yes, American and Canadian MTs have families and lives that may, at some time, require them to take off the shackles of their headsets. They are women, mothers, wives first .... not indentured servants to the transcription companies. Many people died for the freedom to speak and that right also extends to transcriptionists.
Not only same work ethic, but I'd be more fearful
of having them try to steal the account from me in one form or another (contacting the doc directly, offering to cover for vacation, sick time, etc.), especially if they know how well you are paid and are already familiar with the private accounts you sought for yourself.
Sorry, but I don't believe the sisterhood bond exists when there's opportunity for one's own advancement, even if it involves cutting another's throat in the process.
I guess that is what they call work ethic - sm
But even though it is hard, it depends on what is most important to you, cooking, cleaning, doing laundry, or earning a living. When I first started this work at home, I told myself that I would do anything and I mean anything, to be successful. Even if it meant working until midnight, and believe me, there have been times when I HAVE worked until midnight and beyond, just to meet my TAT, but I did it. I work in my living room, where it is bright and airy. No TV. No radio or music. No distractions. I screen my phone calls and only answer the ones I know are important. I have injured friends' and family's feelings when they think that just because I am at home, I have time for their whims. I just look at it like it is a job just like any other. If I were in an office somewhere, I would not have time for cooking, cleaning, laundry, TV, etc. and the same applies at home. It is all in how much you want out of this. Working at home is not for everybody, but it works for me. Self-discipline, I guess. Good Luck to you. :^)
This is most certainly true. The work ethic has changed
And it is an old fashioned thing to stay, rather than throw away a long-term relationship or seek one out. Looking for something new and better rather than building seniority seems to be the ideal these days. I am not saying not to leave if something is wrong. Any intelligent person would do so. But to want longevity in a particular company that seems to be a thing of the past, not only in this business, but in many. Times change and people change. For me, bird in hand worth 2 in bush. :)
Is it good work ethic to ask to change accounts at natl company? Please SM
I work for a national company and overall I've been quite happy. However, they changed my primary account last fall, and I have been miserable since then. It is a teaching hospital, several hundred docs, tons of different rules about format, etc, that change almost daily, 80% ESL, and I am very unhappy with it and making less now than I have in the last 7 years I've been doing acute care transcription because I'm so slow on it. I get paid 8.5/line.
My question is, is it wrong to ask to change accounts? My quality is great, they are very happy with my work, and in fact have mentioned that many MTs have quit rather than do this account, and of course I realize someone has to do it. I'm so unhappy, yet I don't want to appear incompetent or a cherry picker, etc, if I were to ask for a change (which they would not have to do), and I would like to stay with this company if only I could find a way to be happy with the work, because it is a good place overall. Any thoughts on this? Thank you.
Any IC's who are single parents- How do you manage financially?
I want to try IC'ing but afraid to take the plunge!
You and your hubby sound like awesome parents! sm
I also think that what the OP posted may have been misconstrued. I didn't see it that way at all. Of course, you may have been talking about me;) Anyway, I just don't understand how every topic gets into a flame war. There are a lot of assumptions and fabrications people are pulling out of the air here just for the sake of a good argument. I'm working two accounts trying to stay afloat and do have to make up work on the weekends. The entire point of this whole conversations was regarding this new fad of MTSOs offering only two schedules. Sadly I'm starting to see it more and more. What's even sadder is that many of these are IC positions with no weekend differential! We all have to do what is in the best interest of our households. I'm glad you've found something that works into your homeschooling schedule...as hard as it must be! Hang in there!
Do you know why wealthy get tax advantages?
And by the way, they do pay more in tax dollars than a $40K income ... but percentagewise may not.
Wealthy get tax advantages not just because they are wealthy but because they INVEST in businesses -- businesses that provide job opportunities for the rest of us. They invest in research. They invest in the economy and take great risk with their money.
If the wealthy were not willing to invest, none of us would have any companies to work at. We wouldn't have many of the places we shop and work at.
Think I've found a way to get out of MT and become wealthy. sm
I'm going to start a health care insurance company, charge exhorbitant premiums, and then not pay for anything. Look out Barbados, here I come.
To re-phrase: The bullies are the big, wealthy
companies going after a non-wealthy employee whom they deem as someone who will be unable to stand up to them. They know this person has no means to pay a big settlement (which they know they're not going to get, anyway). I think they and others just like them are trying to shut up the whistle-blowers who are being exploited by an increasingly dishonest and underhanded industry. (Not unlike what the insurance industry and most of the health care industry have become, these days). If they can shut up the whistle-blowers, they can prevent the truth from getting out to the general public, and can continue with 'business as usual'.
The wealthy elite are running this country.
And they would prefer that your money be in THEIR pocket. They will share as much as they have to and no more.
Yeah, you do have to work or they let you go.
As an IC, I've never even been able to take a day off to be sick. I was told that I couldn't take my requested vacation when I wanted it, too. I tell them the schedule I want to work, but they're always pushing the limits there. No work for several days, and then too much work that "nobody else can do". The companies that hire ICs are also pushing the limits on categorizing workers. They're hiring for ICs to work Tu-Sa, or Su-Th, the pay rate is $.xx, and it's 2nd or 3rd shift. I'm sorry, but when you hire an independent contractor, they are supposed to set their own schedule and pay. I'd love to just go down every single job ad and turn these companies into the IRS for misclassifying their employees. What, do they think we're so ignorant that we'll tolerate it just for the privilege of working at home and carrying their overhead costs for them? Men wouldn't allow themselves to be treated like this.
You're right, there are companies out there that route work to employees before ICs. They are not going to pay their employees hourly downtime rates so the ICs can do the work. IC is low on the totem pole.
Yeah, but who is getting this work?
I supposedly have 3 backup accounts but never get any work from them either. Usually, I don't mind, but I'm getting a wee bit tired rearranging MY schedule so I can get my lines.
Yeah, I work it sm
I have an employee job and an IC job. FT is Tues-Sat. IC is Mon-Fri. I told the IC that I won't work Monday, but I will work the rest of the week.
Well, we lost staff to the hurricane in TX and I am the only other one who can do an OP note, so I worked 2 Mondays with that. Then, when the gal came back, she stopped doing the OP notes or even much work for that matter, so I have worked a couple more Mondays. I went for over a month without a day off and then finally, I took 2 days off the PT IC job and a PTO day off the FT job and had a 3-day weekend. I didn't answer the phone or the email and had an automessage back to them: NOT WORKING ON MY VACATION.
I suppose it is what you want to do and if it is worth it to you. I get 10 cpl or better for production on my PT job, so I work them without a lot of grumbling, but I do get sick of it. Sometimes work flow is so low that you gotta and I have been there too.
Yeah, they like it when we grovel for our work. nm
Yeah..they are dishonest. They most certainly are in India. Do you really want to work for someone
that is dishonest?? not me..
lmao!! yeah maybe I'm the recruiter...suggesting that my co-worker is the problem. yeah that make
x
Yeah, and I can bet that account used to be my primary because it rarely has work now!
nm
Amen! Yeah, work was low Tues morning,
but I said THANK GOODNESS so I could take a break. Came back later and there was plenty.
It's not like gasoline where a supply can be kept for the low times. No; any transcription company has to try to stay within TAT or they lose money. When they lose money, do they penalize the MTs? Nope; they eat it.
I firmly believe that the good companies want to hire good people and keep them, but also get good accounts and keep them, so they have to delicately manage things the best they can. They have to let people take vacations now and then, and they can't predict when people will be sick or have emergencies. If you've ever worked in a hospital medical records department, you know that some of the docs are notorious for waiting until they are threatened with loss of privileges before they catch up their backlogs. So then they go in and dictate 200 reports they shoud have been doing for the last 2 months. Get a few of those and then there's a real crisis. Everybody gets a notice to work - work - work. Finally 2 weeks later everybody has worked their tushes off and done all this extra work, and everything is caught up on Monday morning. Then the docs come straggling in to do their dictations on Monday, while MTs sit at their desks, fuming because their is no work. Well whose fault is that? Management's? Nope, that's just business. I doubt there is a business in this world that is the same day in and day out, 7 days a week, every week of the year.
yeah and the MTSO still charging full price for the work
Most physicians/hospitals don't even know they're dictating into VR so still paying full-on transcription prices while the nationals/MTSOs cut the MT's salary in half. Nice huh?
Yeah, out of work this a.m. ALREADY -- Transtech overhires to cover their rears!
We have been running out of work consistently for the past several months. You have to work every hour of the day to get your lines, always asked to FLEX your schedule, yet they DEMAND that you work your schedule! LOL They have really overhired within the past couple of weeks and we have NO WORK AT ALL NOW. Very hard to get your line count or make a DECENT PAYCHECK now. Hope that helps.
yeah - they haven't told a couple of hospitals that they are offshoring their work - but I think
x
Oh, yeah, NOT fair to those TransTech MT's who are REQUIRED to work a certain # of hours per mont
on weekends! Tell us how you managed to talk TT mgmt into that favor for you! Oh, no, another TT fav !!!
Yeah, yeah, I spelled health wrong -
I am very angry right now and my fingers are taking it out on the keyboard.
Yeah, be careful. I worked for MTSO that "said" they paid for spaces. I had to work really S
hard for my lines. Took a second job part-time with hospital, same platform (EXText), same font size, etc. and did the same amount of lines in half the time. Decided to look closer at the MTSO and found out they weren't counting spaces. I confronted them and all of sudden. Got lots of apologies and will add to your next paycheck. Long story short, never happened and I never had any work after that.
There are a lot of unscrupulous MTSOs out there. They lie, cheat, and steal!
Yeah, yeah, AND enjoy!
Yeah - n,
.
Yeah! Take That!
I like OSi too!!!
Yeah let's go there.
x
yeah right.
come on, every time some MT posts this type of problem, there is always the same response back from KS. Like you don't think they have sent email after email and call after call trying to get things taken care of or get help? Please. You don't think that we have the number and haven't called a million times? This is all just for show.
Yeah, sure!!! Like we believe you!
TS
Yeah????!!!!!!!!!
I also am very happy with my employment at OSi. I think it is a great company, one that listens to the needs of their employees and does their best to accomodate. It is pitiful to read how so many bash OSi and other companies on this board and you don't even work for them. If you have in the past and have found employment elsewhere, move on and knock off the infernal complaints. If you are employed with the company you are complaining about, then find a new job. We don't need or want your constant bantering. And if you are still employed here, that tells us you obviously aren't good enough to get a job elsewhere.
Yeah. RUN, RUN, RUN,
There are much better jobs out there.
yeah but
I would be typing all night.
yeah,
well, you know.
Yeah for you!
Good to know there is life after MTing.
Yeah, I know what you mean
about the taxes and sure can't blame you there.
I hope you can reconnect and get the job with him, though. If more docs start to realize what's happening and leave the companies that do the outsourcing, that will send a huge message to these companies. Might also force them to treat their American employees better.
In the age of terrorism, I don't see how it CAN'T be a security issue to outsource medical transcription, especially to middle eastern countries. Think about it. Besides access to the obvious personal demographics of the patient, they also know which medications the patient is taking. With the way elderly people order medications from Canada, I can just imagine an elderly person getting an ad in the mail for the medication they're on at less than half the price, order it and wind up dead. It seems that large groups of Americans could be targeted and harmed based simply on their medical information. (Maybe my imagination is running wild, but I never could have imagined that anyone would think to use a plane as a missile to kill a large group of people, either.)
yeah, but . . .
what about all the employees of some of these companies who are being told to be patient while work returns to normal after the holidays, yet have been virtually w/o an income for weeks now. This shouldn't be happening consistently in the winter months, holidays or not. What rights do those people have as far as any compensation? They're being left hanging in the balance with no way to pay the bills and yet not being given the option of collecting unemployment benefits because they're still technically on the payroll. How far is this going to go before people stop accepting the obvious? It saddens me to no end to see companies treating their long-time loyal employees this way.
Yeah right. I just bet you do.
x
Oh yeah
I have been with a smaller MTSO (about 100 MTs) since leaving MQ. I love having the QA that I never got at MQ, but what bugs me is that when I send in a blank or a flag, they answer not only me, but everyone on the whole darn QA team (okay, there are only 4), plus the president of the company.
Now, come on, if I'm just asking for a second listen on a cc doc (new account), do you really need to copy the Prez on that one?
yeah
I guess that is average then. I was hoping to make more by now. My goal is to one day get my own accounts and start my own business
Yeah I know
Lack of communication seems to keep getting worse and worse. This is along with other issues I have I do not want to discuss on here. I just am trying to decide about some things. I used to love the flexibility but now even that is in question.
Yeah...
I will take 8 cpl, but not 6 cpl. Maybe per gross line, but not on a 65 character line. I actually worked 6.5 cpl for each actual line and on average I made about the same as 8 cpl/65 and in some cases more.
Yeah, what's up with that?
And have you seen the screening test on the website...is that a joke??? If you go to the site you will see that you can pretty much study it and look up all the answers before doing it. I also hired and trained a few Andrews grads in the past. Not that impressed.
Yeah, all that at 7 cpl! lol
x
Oh yeah, a BIG 8! lol.
x
Yeah, looks like it..
JLG recruiter was from MQ, went to JLG (not for too long I might add) and now works for Alltype? Wow!
yeah...they don't want to pay you..sm
I used to work for a company that would hold my checks up to 30 days, simply because their state law (California) said that it was legal for them to do so. With two pay periods a month, I was never caught up on pay and it took two more months after I quit to get everything that was owed me. Sux.
