Yeah, out of work this a.m. ALREADY -- Transtech overhires to cover their rears!

Posted By: TT MT on 2009-04-23
In Reply to: Well, they run out of work alot. - nm

We have been running out of work consistently for the past several months.  You have to work every hour of the day to get your lines, always asked to FLEX your schedule, yet they DEMAND that you work your schedule!  LOL  They have really overhired within the past couple of weeks and we have NO WORK AT ALL NOW.  Very hard to get your line count or make a DECENT PAYCHECK now.  Hope that helps.

Oh, yeah, NOT fair to those TransTech MT's who are REQUIRED to work a certain # of hours per mont
on weekends!  Tell us how you managed to talk TT mgmt into that favor for you!   Oh, no, another TT fav !!!
At our company, we all work together...MT's cover for each other
if you don't do that, the only other option is a float person. Then when you want extra work - it's not there. So we work together to cover each other's vacations, sick days and other mini-crises. I sure wouldn't expect an MTSO to be superwoman and be able to cover an influx of dictation plus an MT who needs the afternoon off, after all!
very true... MT wages won't cover holiday work and sm
grocery stores, nurses, those people usually VOLUNTEER and are not forced into their shifts. Some people want to work on holidays and get DOUBLE or TRIPLE pay, not 9 cents a line to do an ESL that makes you $10 an hour. And what does Obama have to do with it?
Webmedx overhires.
Just think you should know this.
WMX overhires, been doing it for years, but

with my company we have been on OT for months, with the last week there being a significant slow down in work.  My company is content not being the biggest, isn't constantly seeking new accounts, hasn't had a new account in more than a year, so any fluctuation in the work is due to holidays/vacations/economy.  My company pays downtime though so having them pay me to do my housework is fine with me.  The slow period doesn't last week after week though.

When I worked there the account I was hired for was an overflow account, only they didn't tell me.  I hung in there for 5 months, but there was only 1 pay period during that time that I got in 40 hours.  I requested and was given 2 more accounts, but they had even less work than my primary and still not enough to be 40 hours, despite sitting in front of the computer literally 12 hours a day, getting up at 3 a.m., working my weekends, etc.

This has been an ongoing issue for at least the last 2 years and they don't seem to care.  They may have new accounts coming on, but then they again will hire too many.  Some will be fired for whatever reasonn and some will quit due to lack of work and then it may all even out, but how many months to get to that point.

Yes, I'm not sure why either one of them overhires. I have worked for both and had too many days
no work. It is frustrated to get hired for a job and have no work. I envision this. They get a new account, overhire, a lot of people quit because there is not enough work to go around and they are tired of waiting all day for work, THEN, because so many people quit and a high turnover..they panic AND THEN overhire again. My opinion is that it is a neverending circle. It would be nice in a perfect world if companies knew what it took to retain and keep good employees and only hire on an as-needed basis i.e. brand new account etc.. but that is never going to happen and thus the circle continues. I'm getting off this merry-go-round.
And this is why every company overhires - MTs don't stick it out - the plain truth
nm
Well I don't work for Transtech and this discussion isn't about Transtech...
and that is not age discrimination....give me a break...
Yeah, you do have to work or they let you go.

As an IC, I've never even been able to take a day off to be sick.  I was told that I couldn't take my requested vacation when I wanted it, too.  I tell them the schedule I want to work, but they're always pushing the limits there.  No work for several days, and then too much work that "nobody else can do".  The companies that hire ICs are also pushing the limits on categorizing workers.  They're hiring for ICs to work Tu-Sa, or Su-Th, the pay rate is $.xx, and it's 2nd or 3rd shift.  I'm sorry, but when you hire an independent contractor, they are supposed to set their own schedule and pay.  I'd love to just go down every single job ad and turn these companies into the IRS for misclassifying their employees.  What, do they think we're so ignorant that we'll tolerate it just for the privilege of working at home and carrying their overhead costs for them?  Men wouldn't allow themselves to be treated like this.

You're right, there are companies out there that route work to employees before ICs.  They are not going to pay their employees hourly downtime rates so the ICs can do the work.  IC is low on the totem pole.

Yeah, but who is getting this work?
I supposedly have 3 backup accounts but never get any work from them either. Usually, I don't mind, but I'm getting a wee bit tired rearranging MY schedule so I can get my lines.
Yeah, I work it sm
I have an employee job and an IC job. FT is Tues-Sat. IC is Mon-Fri. I told the IC that I won't work Monday, but I will work the rest of the week.

Well, we lost staff to the hurricane in TX and I am the only other one who can do an OP note, so I worked 2 Mondays with that. Then, when the gal came back, she stopped doing the OP notes or even much work for that matter, so I have worked a couple more Mondays. I went for over a month without a day off and then finally, I took 2 days off the PT IC job and a PTO day off the FT job and had a 3-day weekend. I didn't answer the phone or the email and had an automessage back to them: NOT WORKING ON MY VACATION.

I suppose it is what you want to do and if it is worth it to you. I get 10 cpl or better for production on my PT job, so I work them without a lot of grumbling, but I do get sick of it. Sometimes work flow is so low that you gotta and I have been there too.
Yeah, they like it when we grovel for our work. nm

Yeah..they are dishonest. They most certainly are in India. Do you really want to work for someone
that is dishonest?? not me..
Cover yourself
I would call and email Human Resources and confirm that they are aware of your last date of work with the company. This way, if they have heard that info from your supervisor, they will start the ball rolling.
I cover

myself with 2 services.  One I'm an employee with excellent health benefits, fantastic PTO, and other perks.  The other I'm an IC.  I work about 45 hours a week.

I'm in central PA but am single so living off of $30k wouldn't work for me.

I wouldn't even consider an hourly gig.

cover that
My contract is only for 1 year. It renews each year. Once upon a time, I had my own service and contracted with the government for a while. They teach you very quickly how to guarantee you're a contractor :)

I think it's horrendous the posts like the one above who don't care that they are in an illegal situation as long as it doesn't rock their boat. THis is why I have no faith that this JOB will ever be elevated to a profession.
lmao!! yeah maybe I'm the recruiter...suggesting that my co-worker is the problem. yeah that make
x
Yeah, and I can bet that account used to be my primary because it rarely has work now!
nm
Yeah, work ethic! My parents were wealthy

and both inherited big bucks from their parents. My mother never worked a day in her life, including not caring for her kids. My Dad had a nice job. They made me work starting at age 12 to 13 as well. Work ethic? I went from being a kid to having to be an adult at 12. I never did anything fun on the weekends with my peers, like football games, soccer games - I had to work. I worked every day after school, and every weekend. And now I'm still plodding along working in my 50's. My kids don't have to work at 12 and 13. I want them to enjoy life while they can. This old work horse has great ethics, but had no childhood.

Amen! Yeah, work was low Tues morning,
but I said THANK GOODNESS so I could take a break. Came back later and there was plenty.

It's not like gasoline where a supply can be kept for the low times. No; any transcription company has to try to stay within TAT or they lose money. When they lose money, do they penalize the MTs? Nope; they eat it.

I firmly believe that the good companies want to hire good people and keep them, but also get good accounts and keep them, so they have to delicately manage things the best they can. They have to let people take vacations now and then, and they can't predict when people will be sick or have emergencies. If you've ever worked in a hospital medical records department, you know that some of the docs are notorious for waiting until they are threatened with loss of privileges before they catch up their backlogs. So then they go in and dictate 200 reports they shoud have been doing for the last 2 months. Get a few of those and then there's a real crisis. Everybody gets a notice to work - work - work. Finally 2 weeks later everybody has worked their tushes off and done all this extra work, and everything is caught up on Monday morning. Then the docs come straggling in to do their dictations on Monday, while MTs sit at their desks, fuming because their is no work. Well whose fault is that? Management's? Nope, that's just business. I doubt there is a business in this world that is the same day in and day out, 7 days a week, every week of the year.
Your bank should cover you for the
fraudulent use of your card. In the meantime, please file a police report on your daughter's friend. The ATM should have photos of her. Good luck to you--that's awful.
YUCK, ought to about cover it.

Everybody take cover! Here's comes the TT bashing again. nm

Cover letter
I have been offered 7 jobs in the past year so take my advice for what you will.

The sentence: Please consider this letter as my formal application presenting my background, education, and experience. I would take it out. Your resume outlines your background, education, etc. This sentence is just fluff.

Rather than saying over 4 years, make it 5 years. Lots of companies want 5 years, and if it is only a matter of months difference, it won't matter.

I would include more types of imaging and take out some of the medical terminology, labwork, etc. They are more interested in your radiology background and expect you to know anatomy, etc.

This sentence: I am highLY self-motivated and produce excellent work, both in quality and quantity. Anybody can say that, and it sounds liked canned text. Do you have a QA score to back it up? How many reports do you average an hour? More specifics than a general statement.

This sentence: May I arrange an interview to further discuss my qualifications? Don't ask. Tell them I am very interested in this position and look forward to hearing from you. Then give them a phone number and email to contact you.

Good luck

You really don't need a cover letter.
Send your resume. We are smart enough to figure out the rest. Most times a cover letter heads straight for the trash. Who has time to read it? Unless a company specifically asks for a cover letter, don't bother.
That is a BIG problem at TransTech is leads assigning work, rather than letting the work flow
This TT MT just admitted to that fact.  It has been very obvious, as so easy to tell how work comes into our que and then gets pulled out as fast as it came in and replaced with YUKKY dictators.   VERY frustrating to us other TT MT's who take the JUNK that is NOT assigned to other MT's, such as this poster.
There is NO work at Transtech. Maybe they just choose special people to send work to
df
yeah and the MTSO still charging full price for the work
Most physicians/hospitals don't even know they're dictating into VR so still paying full-on transcription prices while the nationals/MTSOs cut the MT's salary in half. Nice huh?
Cover letter possibly?? nm
nm
Cover yourself w/that arbitration page!
You should not sign that arbitration agreement. That's making you give away your legal rights and allowing them to get away with breaking the law should they choose to do so.
However, if you MUST sign it, put CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT above or below your signature. That way, you are covered if it ever comes up that you have a suit against them; they aren't giving you a choice in the matter, and if you don't agree to their robbery/theft of your rights, you won't have a job.
Not all hospitals cover all specialities.

I don't think that was a silly question to ask.

cover letter-need feedback/help

Hi all-

My hospital recently outsourced its rad transcription.  I was able to get on the with the company that took over, but ended up taking a 50% cut in pay!  I am in the process of sending out resumes in hopes to find PT/prn (preferably IC) work to supplement.  While I can write a rocking resume, I am absolutely terrible with cover letters.  I have drawn one up (based on examples from the net) and was hoping that I could get some feedback (content, format, grammar, etc) from my fellow MTs.  Any help would be great!  I am fully open to any CONSTRUCTIVE criticism.  Please see the letter below and thanks in advance for your help!

Dear Employer:

In response to the open medical Transcriptionist position with your organization, I am enclosing a resume for your review. Please consider this letter as my formal application presenting my background, education, and experience.

I have over 4 years experience in radiology transcription; and I am well versed in the areas of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, labwork, and surgical procedures.

I have considerable experience in transcribing all types of medical imaging procedures, including Interventional Radiology and Mammography.  I am high self-motivated and produce excellent work, both in quality and quantity.

May I arrange an interview to further discuss my qualifications? I am available for an interview at a mutually convenient time.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Encl.

The reason they charge a fee is to cover
cost of equipment.  Most don't charge a monthly fee, but a deposit that is spread out.  When you return equipment in good working order you get  a refund.  There are some people who have accepted a position, gotten the equipment, and then immediately quit without returning equipment, so this is a way for company to try to eliminate that.  Some companies will send you a foot pedal or a C-phone at no charge, but you are expected to return them if employment terminates.
You cover for each other in times of crisis? sm
I did not even realize we were allowed to talk to the other regular MTs, even though team leads have told me that other MTs have been in the same boat and I am not alone.  I have often wished I could talk to the other MTs that I actually have something in common with.  I only talk to the team leads, so I know they cover for each other, but as far as talking to a non-team lead for support or questions or friendship I thought they tried to prevent that?  Now I really feel out of the loop.
NO WORK at Transtech -- did no good to work the holiday for 1.5 lines, did it?
I am sure the office staff will share their PAID HOLIDAY MONIES with us who sit here with no work.  This has gotten to be such a frustrating profession.  I guess I need to relocate to Houston so that I can work in the office, too, and reap those wonderful paid benefits that us at-home piecemeal workers do not get.
yeah - they haven't told a couple of hospitals that they are offshoring their work - but I think

Resume and cover letter question. sm

This may be a dumb question, but the last time I applied for a job and sent a resume was 10 years ago, before everything was done online.  (I remember the test tape being mailed to me, and I had to mail it back within... 48 hours, I think it was.  Seems so archaic now!  LOL)

My question is, when you are asked to cut and paste your resume, do you *just* put in your resume, or do you put a cover letter *and* your resume?

Also, do you worry about the formatting of your resume if the formatting looks messed up after it's been pasted in?

Thank you!

If an IC there was no taxes taken out to cover unemployment insurance
.
Yeah, yeah, I spelled health wrong -
I am very angry right now and my fingers are taking it out on the keyboard.
Yeah, be careful. I worked for MTSO that "said" they paid for spaces. I had to work really S

hard for my lines.  Took a second job part-time with hospital, same platform (EXText), same font size, etc. and did the same amount of lines in half the time.  Decided to look closer at the MTSO and found out they weren't counting spaces.  I confronted them and all of sudden.  Got lots of apologies and will add to your next paycheck.  Long story short, never happened and I never had any work after that.

There are a lot of unscrupulous MTSOs out there.  They lie, cheat, and steal!

Cover letters! Brings back memories!

I remember preparing my very first resume...fancy stock paper with watermark, with the obligatory short-n-sweet cover letter included, even a reference sheet if I was feeling ballsy, all mailed in a manilla envelope the same size as the paper so there were no creases!  Now everything is done electronic and it's SO impersonal!

I'm such an old fart.

My husband got a raise to cover his increase, the lucky bum. nm
..
Please don't panic. Read the cover letter with the rates.
This may not be the final choices, TT CEO and HR are working really hard to find other alternatives. You guys should mention that here along with panicking so that everyone who reads these boards gets the full picture. These may not be all the choices. Also, I just came from another company and their UHC cost more than even these expensive ones, and I was stuck with it. Their rates went up too and so, it is not just us, it is the insurance companies.
Please, wait and see what happens before you all decide in your mind there are no alternatives. There are, we just don't know what they are yet, and the boss did say in all fairness they are working on it.
What you need personally to cover your bills should be the deciding factor. And what you MIGHT earn
m
Worked for an MT service that had a mistake on the cover of Employee Manual (sm)
That is bad.
in Michigan it IS illegal to publish a check that you do not have the funds to cover
nm
since I didn't pay into social security as an IC, I started a retirement plan to cover me.
x
If there is a typo in your resume or cover letter or answers to their questionairre, they automatica
I thought this is harsh but then I went to work for another company in a recruiting position, and we do the same thing! If someone cannot proof their resume and correspondence with a potential employer, what will their transcription look like? Not nice, but it is true.
huh? are you saying why not work at transtech? sm
Been there, done that and don't want to again due to the amt of ESLs Transtech had.  i couldn't make good $ with so many different ESLs that i couldn't get used to them.  so are you saying Probity is equivalent to transtech in ESL regard?
TransTech - what are they like to work for? s/m

Are you expected to produce a certain amount of lines per pay period?

Do they pay on time?

I have been offered a position but would like to know more about the company before I decide whether or not to take things any further.

Thanks for any information you can provide.

For those of you who work at TransTech doing VR, do you like it there? NM
