What happened to loyalty and ethics?

Posted By: SHOCKED on 2008-07-23
In Reply to: I agree. Transcriptionists have turned into a big whiny mess who have inflated egos. sm - MTSO2

You sold out! You are a coward and you are weak. You are also a thief.

speaking of ethics

Can someone tell me how they would handle a situation in which the TASP you are typing on is also an MTSO. I was told initially they were not a transcription company, and later found out (thank you internet) they are indeed.  I would like to keep competition close, but that is pushing it.

They offshore and lie about it, their ethics
don't exist, no DD unless they changed it again.   I don't know anything about the radiology account though.
Sounds like she has the same ethics as a -
manager I once had. She'd disappear into her office for hours at a time, and behind her locked doors it turned out she had quite the little ebay business going. Never lifted a finger, otherwise. I was so glad to hear she finally lost her job.
Thanks for the morning lesson on ethics.

There's no law against that, goodness. Poor ethics but

work ethics -- not just this profession
you will find there are those kind of people in any given profession.  Also you never know one's background and you cannot compare apples to oranges.  Providing wisdom for someone is far better and more professional and makes you the bigger person.
Question on Ethics on this Company
sincere question, not busting or kidding here. Is it legal for an MTSO to come on here and either start a thread praising their company, but pretending they are just an MT, or, is it legal for an MTSO or upper management to come on here and reply to posts asking questions of a company, again pretending they are just the MTs and giving their -- honest -- praises for a company. I ask this because I know for a fact that there is a current thread on here where this is happening, and I suspect it happens more than we all could guess.  The problem I have with it is that this particular company keeps getting painted as a dream place to work, and NOT by the MTs, when it is a true nightmare in reality.  So victim after victim after victim, including me, fall for these lies, which is truly what they are.  I know this is not ethical, but not much we can do with MTSOs and ethics these days. I know MTs can be threatened by MTSOs never to post something negative on here, for fear of repercussions, libel, slander, etc. But what about the shoe on the other foot?  If we know that a company is on here posing as an MT and lying right thru their teeth, or keys, can they get in trouble for it? Because I for sure would love to pursue this on at least the company where I know for a fact this is standard protocol.  Is there any monitoring agency or licensing agency or anyone who we could formally complain to about these practices, as to me its true fraud.  Any ideas? The MTs need all the help we can get making informed HONEST decisions, and this  lying garbage has got to stop.
Ethics? On an anonymous forum? (sm)
It's too much to hope for wanting people to be ethical on an anonymous forum. Just take everything you read with a grain of salt and post what you know to be the truth whenever you see flagrant bull being posted by unscrupulous people. Unfortunately, that's about all you can do. People do unethical stuff all the time in business. Sad but true.
It is a matter of ethics. I have been offered multiple jobs the last
year and have turned them all down because they offshore.  I stayed where I am because they didn't offshore.  TAT was a problem and I was getting weary of having to work every weekend, even though I did my lines during the week and then some, but I have days where I'm short 300-400 lines.  Do you think they got qualified MTs by going to India?  I have done QA on a trial basis on offshore work and I have seen the quality that comes from there.  If they are going to have to do 100% QA, they can't they do a mentoring program or take a newbie fresh out of school?  I've quit at least one job (non-MT) due to the unethical practices of a company.
you said it. Great work ethics these MTSOs. We should charge a retainer. That (sm)
would stop some overhiring.
Loyalty?
How can you be loyal to a company that took your work and sent it offshore and then turns around and blames you for the poor quality! The fact of the matter is, they took a good company, got greedy and offshored for cheaper MTs and LIED about it, to everyone!!!! Now, they are paying the price! She didn't show any of us MTs any loyalty when she decided to offshore; heck, she lied continuously about it for months, so how can you have any loyalty for her? For those of you who have been having low work volumes, why do you think that is? It's because the offshore company is promised a set amount of work, so they get the work first, then the loyal MTs get what's left! Think about how far things have gone down hill in the past years. Dust off those resumes girls
I go by loyalty s/m
The company that overall treats me the best takes first priority for me.
Loyalty
Loyalty should go 2 ways. If they value you as an MT and cannot keep you busy enough so that you need 2 jobs, they should not object to your saying you would love to help them out on that particular day, but you have a prior commitment. They do not need to know you are working 2 jobs.
Co. out for $, no loyalty to anyone. We should also

Loyalty to MDI
I have been in this business 17 years, half of that time running my own service until people kept undercutting to the point it was not profitable.  Before that worked for a major Fortune 500 company that has laid people off for the last 20 years all while increasing the salaries and bonuses of the top executives (I was laid off 3 separate times, dh is still there but after 35 years now has to work a terrible shift to keep his job and who knows for how much longer.)  No offense but I always thought you girls who were so loyal to MDI were living in a bubble that was going to burst.  This was not your family or your best friend.  This was your JOB, working for a company just like any other company in this country and I learned long ago the employees don't matter.  I have a few more years until retirement hopefully and was hoping to stick it out but I am seriously thinking I need to get out of this industry and go back to school.  Reading the SEC filing about Transcend has me a little shocked and disappointed.  As I said before everyone needs to do what they need to do for themselves.  Good luck to all.
This is completely backwards from applicant ethics taught in business school. (sm)
This was long before on-line applications were possible, but tradionally, applicants courteously follow procedures outlined by hiring company. Then you have a chance to ask your questions. And teachers advised you to have serious, respectable, and not focus too much on money or benefit issues until the employer reached the stage where they knew they were interested in you. Only then could you get into very polite, carefully worded money negotiations.

why speak of loyalty when as MTs
Hasn't anyone noticed? This business is a sweat shop.... these MTSO have it made. They get cheap offshore workers and housewives and moms dying to work at home, busting their butts, turning their homes into sweatshops. Be loyal to WHOM? The company that treats you like crap and CUTS YOUR PAY and talks to you like you are an idiot? Oh yeah, RIGHT hahahaha you are nutso babes!
loyalty won't pay your bills
x
While I'm sure MDI-MD appreciates your loyalty
appreciate your posting here, adding pokers to the fire of the already hurt/unhappy MTs. Give it a break, really. And you not only have to share that your experience is absolutely Mary Poppins material, perfect in every way, but you are compelled to discredit everyone else's negative experience. I'm not even involved, but it gets my dander up. Get over yourself. You're doing your beloved company more harm than good by inflaming an already inferno situation. I'm sure Carlotta agrees. In fact, I know she would agree with me.
when it comes to your own wellbeing, the only loyalty you need is to yourself.
.
Honesty, Loyalty, and Integrity! sm
A company that will be honest, no matter what the cost. Integrity to keep our records and work in the USA. Loyalty to your entire staff, let them know how important they are to the company, as well as loyalty to your clients. Keep your TATs and promises to your clients. Keep your promises to your MTs.

A decent line rate such as 10 cpl or above and flexibility!

Hope that helps!
Companies have to earn loyalty (sm)
Besides, all prospective employees go through a background check.  It's not like these MTSOs are completely in the dark.  I cannot believe (or can I?) that some companies ask for people's screen names to monitor stuff they say on a message board.  If they're that petty and paranoid, there's good reason for it, and I betcha dollars to donuts it has *absolutely* nothing to do with MT attitudes.  If anyone is spilling inappropriate information here, there's a moderator to take care of that.

BTW, now that I'm happy with my company, I am loyal.  In fact, I'm so positive that when *I* post on here about my job, people often give me this oh, stuff it, Polyanna attitude.

The only thing that could possibly get me to leave is the promise of all that money getting my own accounts would bring.  I don't think I'd like to deal with all the hassle involved, though...but if someone had a Powerpoint presentation to convince me it was easy as fallin' off a log, I'd be very interested!
No work versus loyalty

My pay period ended last week and I made $42.  My supervisor is telling us to be patient and actually is getting angry when any MT starts to question what is going on.  We have been told to be patient and the patient's are trying to meet their deductibles and that is why there is no work.  I work for a huge hospital system with over 1,000 doctors with at least 30 outside facilities.  Now, yesterday, we have been told not to log on again because the hospital has contacted them and said do not log in.  I cannot go another pay making $42. What should I do? Be loyal or move on.

Thanks

No work versus loyalty
What company is this that you work for as the company I work for is the same way lately?
The last line just shows my loyalty and dedication (sm)
to my current employer, but desire to stay in the field of MT via a national company should my previous position not be offered when I return.
The people with the loyalty to the almighty dollar...
.
I do believe your loyalty is displaced. No MTSO or national are loyal to MTs
even though they claim to be. Loyalty is earned just like respect. This is a business just like any other business. If one company cuts pay, takes away health insurance, etc, why should any person or MT be loyal to that company? If promises are made and then broken or lies are told, why should any MT be loyal to that MTSO or company?

On the other hand, yes, if the MTSO or national and their people take care of the MT and provide her/him continuous work flow, as promised, pay on time, and work together with an honest and respectful relationship, then, yes loyalty should be mutual and reciprocating.

For you to just come on here and claim MTs should be loyal to company is very improper of you!

Ok, those are my cents worth! Have a good night!
Loyalty to Companies Who Have No Work and Expect a Schedule from YOU

There have been many discussions about MT's sitting around waiting for work to file into their queues.. many being told to get more than a few accounts and work on their backups (which, we all know, is someone's primary account)  when their primary is out of work.. so we go 'round in circles.

Then we have discussions about companies putting us in work pools as opposed to assigning us work daily...

I have been sitting here thinking, if I were a painter, wanted to paint fences, and I showed up with my brush and paint bright and early in the morning, and was told to come back tomorrow, the fence has already been painted, but there will be another fence ready to paint tomorrow, please come back, we want you to paint our fences.. I say, OK, I understand, and so I come back tomorrow and when I get there I see that half of the fence has been painted already, someone came before me and painted it, even though I was promised the work of painting the fence.  They say, try again tomorrow.  How many days would you show up to paint a fence? Every day? Don't you (eventually) feel like an idiot standing there with your brush and paint with nothing to do??

Does the company owe you any loyalty at all??  If they don't want your services, why don't they just say so instead of keeping you coming back ready to paint every day?  Then when it DOES get busy, they call and say WHERE IS EVERYBODY??? DONT YOU CARE ABOUT PAINTING THE FENCE?  Like we havent been standing there with our brushes all week waiting to paint.

What I don't understand is the lack of shame from the people who behave this way.   Once in a while things happen..NOT AS A MATTER OF BUSINESS.

I really don't understand the logic of the people who have no problem with this.  You do understand that by doing this, you are simply helping these companies to continue in this fashion, not feeling that they owe you ANYTHING.

Overhiring is really the finaly insult.  If you don't see that.. you are closing your eyes.

I completely concur. Find a good one, or move on, quickly. No loyalty involved. The don't sm
have any to the MTS.  NONE of them.
Loyalty has nothing to do with it until you find the company for you. Be loyal to THAT company.
:p
I did that, but nothing happened

I have a scroll mouse, but font is still same size.  Appreicate the tip, though...never knew that one.

Thanks for posting!

What had happened was, sm
I've known Linda for over a decade now. In the timeline of the article, which is during the time that I've known her, I've only known of Executive Secretarial Services. In many other interviews and articles, she's plainly stated about changing her goals and target market, hence the name change to ExecuScribe to reflect that she's not just a secretarial service. The ESS name can't attract MT clients, and she wanted to open herself up to that market. The articles and a conversation we had both reflect the same.

I think that all of this is a tragedy. This happened 15 years ago and for the RBJ to be rehashing all of this doesn't serve any constructive purpose whatsoever. What it will do is hurt Linda, her clients, her staff, and the community, which could very well trickle down to the MTSOs in our area. She paid her dues and it should have been left alone. The RBJ staff writer was wreckless and irresponsible in bringing this to the forefront. What I can't figure out is how all of this started in the first place, i.e., what made RBJ investigate into their past?

Rochester is dying and has been for years. We have no major or attractive employers anymore except for SMH and the non-degreed positions there are only a tad over minimum wage. Over half of the city population lives in poverty-like conditions and we have one of the highest murder rates in the country. On a national level, she did bring Rochester some recognition and she also provided local jobs.

Again, I think all of this is a mess. You have to admit that Linda's a tough one though. In the article, it stated that she made an "impassioned plea," but it was only ONCE and that was it. She didn't grovel. She's kept her self-respect intact. She's smart and she's also very savvy. She'll pick herself up and dust herself off and go about business. What she did build is very impressive, as have all local MTSOs, which I've had the pleasure of meeting in the past decade.

A lot of people are going to get hurt from this because of careless journalism. The mighty always fall the hardest. I don't think that any of us should rejoice in another's hardship.
this happened at my last job
People were staying up all night working,by the time 8 a.m. rolled around...no work...soooo frustrating for those of us who sleep at night. Had to get away from that, plus the boss had favorites that got all the cake work and the rest of us were stuck struggling with whattever was left over...definitely not an even distribution of work. I asked my boss about it, but of course, I was being crazy....
happens to all... happened to me
But i only was for 2 weeks.
Oh no! Not you too me2!! IT happened to me, too:)
Sorry, but that struck me as funny saying you2 me 2, happened to me2.
Something that has happened to me lately at MDI
I will dial in and get the no more reports message.  A few minutes later I will dial in and start getting reports from the night before or whatever, dictated obviously before the last time I dialed in.  My question is - where were those reports the first time I dialed in?  Do they transfer them off of the hospital system onto MDI's system and maybe they weren't transferred yet?  Just puzzles me when that happens and it's happened several times lately.
I'm sorry this happened to you. If it were me, sm

I would resign to keep my record clean, and try like heck to get another job but this time in a hospital or clinic and get my production skills up.  If you try and get another job at home (I'm under the assumption you might be a newbie), this could happen again.   You don't need that.

As for unemployment payments, I doubt you could get them if you resigned.  You'd be better off getting another job right away.

Good luck!  I hope things work out for you.

It has happened to me too

Sort of the same thing happened to me as well, right before Christmas, different company though.  I had been told prior by someone that my accuracy was at 99%; only to be told by someone different that I was being fired because my quality had gone down over the last few pay periods, but what is odd, is I never got any type of feedback.

I am still relatively new to this profession--having only graduated in June of 2005.  I had also contacted my supervisor and asked how well I was doing prior to the firing, only to be told that I was doing great, and to keep up the good work. Then be e-mailed--not called--but e-mailed stating that I had been terminated effective immediately. That was the worst time to be fired from a job because NO ONE hires right before Christmas, and I am still trying to find another place.

Good luck to you

This happened to me.

Go to a different branch of your bank and this time DON'T tell them that you had your passcode with the card.  They can look up where the money was withdrawn and they will reimburse you (my bank did).  Then go to the police and they will send an officer with you to go to the bank wherever the money was withdrawn.  A report will be made out and they will check the surveillance tape to see who it was, as long as that ATM has cameras.

Good luck to you!  Dont' give up on this.

This is not what happened to me (sm)
Maybe it depends on the account, but I log off whenever I want a break.  I don't have to stay on the entire 8 hours straight.  Demographics didn't have to be filled in.  They were already there.  The only time I have to type anything on demographics is when there is a change, or I have to do a seach for the correct admission.
What ever happened to DSG? Are they still around?
nm
This also happened to me at my last job...sm
Even when I said something...i was crazy and when my line count dropped they wondered why. They actually accused me of not working up to my potential in order to get benefits for my disabled son, well not acused, asked me if that was what was up. No, it wasn't....I left shortly after that last insult.

If I were you...I would most definitely say something and keep saying something or ask for a difficultly premium or something. It is unfair in my opinion.
happened to me, too. .. (sm)
only they disquised it as a new revised pay scale. Lots of patient demos and flipping thru schedules and faxes, low work volume... I would say look elsewhere, too.
Happened to me twice.

I submitted resume to one company, they didn't have any openings, so they sent it to another company that they knew had openings.  Guess they were buddies.  Another time, they saw my resume on monster.com

It happened to me also (twice)
Don't feel left out. This happened to me twice by Zylomed in Florida and Alex Medical Transcription in Virginia. They offered me a position, told me they would send me my papers, and I never received anything. I sent several e-mails and no reply. That just tells you how disrespectful a company can be when they treat employees or future employees this way. This must be a signal that the company is not worth our time and there are other better companies out there. Good luck!
Yes -just happened again to me.
Really tired of it. They should spread them around. Why should every day be hard for me because they cannot do the tough people???
This happened to me once and this is what I did..sm
I was somewhere for only 6 weeks, it took them 5 wks (3 wks overdue) just to get first paycheck, I was begging for work, so just say see ya.  The gave me promises that were never fulfilled.  I was hired under false pretences and felt I owed them nothing.  They couldn't even give me work and when they did, couldn't even pay on time.  I already had another job lined up that needed me immediately that I could devote 40 hours + a week to, so why waste 2 wks?  I just decided I wouldn't ever put them on a resume or use them as a reference.  So I just sent them an email and asked them if they could possibly send me my last paycheck and the actually did.  If they are breaking contract you don't owe them anything especially if you are an IC.  JMO.
This has happened to me (sm)

Most of the time I just ignore what I see.  However, if it is a blatant error, as you describe, I would either report it to the QA people or Support.  How did you know, though, that it was never sent to QA for blanks?  Is it possible that she sent them and they couldn't fill in either?  As far as format goes, though, I would say that's a biggie.  Maybe it is something that MT was doing and has since stopped.  I would report it, though.  No one will be mad at you for doing it - as I said, I have done it for big things and actually was told at one time when I started that I should.

Happened to me also
I have 10+ years' experience in orthopedics and they told me that I did not pass either. They would not show me my test results either, but just told me that I did not pass the test. Company sounds strange in my opinion.
Never happened to me
And, I'm sure that the people in ops don't know how many hours everyone has worked during the week so far.  We aren't required to clock in and clock out, per se.  We do have a timesheet but obviously it's not always current for everyone, and the people in ops don't have access to that anyway as far as I know.  Many people don't work their full hours when they are supposed to and have time to make up from time to time.  If an account is behind, I think that ops is asked to call and see if they can get help.  All you have to do is say I've already worked my full hours for the week.  Not a problem.
what happened with the lay off?
I was hired and they couldnt keep everyone in work.  Did they fix this.  I quit as I was told I would have to scramble for line counts.
