Nobody comes up through the ranks anymore.
An MBA suit who worked for a bank last year and an insurance company last week and will work for a mortgage company next year is in charge. They don't need to know how to transcribe, just as they don't need to know how to take a bank deposit or write an insurance policy.
These are captains of industry and chess players. They're 'money guys' (and gals) not worker bees. And the main thing they need to know is how to slash expenses. And that always happens at the bottom of the pyramid, not at the top. Then they award one another bonuses calculated on how much 'dead weight' they were able to lop off the company. But dead weight is never at the tip of the pyramid, but at its base.
