In Reply to: I agree to disagree with you. In many fields wages - Happy MTer
Wages in the MT field have not drastically gone down. It has gone down some, don't get me wrong, but not drastically. It only appears that way because there are so many work at home jobs now, MT companies, and VR has come on the scene. The in-house positions have stayed around the same, maybe going up slightly. I made $60,000 3 years ago, this past year I made $45,000. That was my mistake for changing companies. I am happy making $45,000, however. I know I have the potential to make more and I am not in panic mode. If you get on with a company with a great platform and not a lot of demographic issues, it isn't that hard.
By the way, to the poster that said admin/sec jobs have gone up, well any 'median' salary site will be inflated. Look in your local paper and you will see they don't pay that much. Have you looked at the 'median' salary sites for an MT? HA!
As far as newbies. I have nothing against a newbie making the same as me. They have to learn! They have the same motivation and desire and I was new once too. If I applied for the receptionist job after having 20 years experience, I will still get offered what the going rate is, same as the person with 1 year experience. We do have an advantage over a new MT. We have experience! We can produce more in a shorter amount of time. So why people beat down the new MT is beyond me. Do you remember how hard it was?
My point to this whole post was only to state that jobs in several fields are not moving up the pay scale. Constantly assuming that MTs are in crisis mode is a little over the top. You want to state that the country is in crisis mode, that makes sense. Rent, groceries, cars...all going up....our salary is not!
