WRONG - these companies are not acting properly

encountered the same thing with SOME companies listed above. Or, there's the company who hires you, sets up a start date, and then you're e-mailing and calling, and finally receive a call from some computer tech who tells you the lady who hired you is now on vacation for two weeks. But, he'd be happy to try and help you???!!!!! What in the world is up with these companies? Don't go with anyone that does not keep in touch and respond to you in a timely manner, because that is exactly what you will be dealing with when you have questions and problems as an employee.

I was properly chastised in another thread below
for explaining about accepting 7 cpl for pay. Those of us old timers remember when the MTs ruled supreme. We were in great demand and the demand would often result in a bidding war for our services. An MT would get an offer of maybe a cent more per line, give notice, and the company he/she worked for would quickly up the ante. That was in the days when MTSOs knew that the only commodity they had was their MTs. We had benefits too, company paid insurance, vacations, sick pay, holidays and no one worked weekends unless they wanted to. Along came the work-at-home privilege and there went all of the above benefits right out the window. I can't even remember when I last had benefits, back in the late 80s maybe? Then came the MT schools promising the moon while working at home in your jammies and kicking out 100s of wantabe MTs every week. So what we have is an over saturated market. Just look at the jobs board. There are hundreds and hundreds of views on each and every ad. It's a jolly wonder anyone ever gets hired. Years of experience most likely isn't an asset in this day and time either. If by chance the recruiter actually gets to a resume with 20 or 30 years experience, it wouldn't surprise me if they would pass right on over it for fear that MT might actually ask for and expect a living wage. Back in the day when we were paid on gross lines one could make a very good living at 6-7 cpl but with a 65-character, no headers, no footers, free demographic typing, etc. there is no way anyone is going to make a living unless they have the best of the best dictators. I don't know about VR but I don't personally know anyone (and I know a LOT of MTs) who is making a living at 4 cpl. I believe them, they have no reason to lie to me. I've done Q.A. which I hate, but being a fast typist, I could type a report faster than I could do a full listen Q.A. so VR would seem about the same to me.
I think that MT may evolve into something different with VR and EMR but I think there will be jobs in the foreseeable future. Likely those jobs are going to require a college education in the not distant future. An RN degree might be worth pursuing. The problem is the pay. Most people need to be able to count on X amount of dollars during a month. I've said before and I say again, MT needs to go back under the DIRECT control of the hospitals. With available technology, there is no need for MTSOs anymore. They used to serve a purpose, not anymore except to provide really good paying jobs for the top brass. Hospitals could not possibly be saving money by outsourcing their MT and there is certainly no excuse for offshoring when there are AMERICANS begging to work and some will work for almost nothing and with the current trend nothing is what they are going to be working for, 2-3 CPL would not support one person let alone a family.
I am doing what I can to help as I feel I owe something to those who come along after me but who are far less fortunate. I'm an old MT with nothing to do but work to try to make life better for others in other areas as well as MT. I have discussed the issue of MT as it relates to health care costs with my Congressman who happens to be a friend and coincidentally is also a physician. He has promised to discuss it with another physician colleague and promised to bring this matter up in Congress. I feel sure he would like to hear other MT stories. I don't know if it would be proper to post his contact information on this board but if anyone would like to email their story and their thoughts to me I would be more than happy to forward them to him or you can find him by researching for the Representative for the Third District of Arkansas. Don't forget to write your own Senator and Congressman! Write and write again until they listen! I know it is hard to trust anyone these days but I assure you I am trustworthy and I would like to help all of you. Sometimes one has to stand up and be counted in order to bring about any kind of change for anything. I could just go away (as some have suggested) and paint my gourds but I really do have a caring heart.
Regarding companies that do not pay on time or get the pay wrong
I think the time has come for these companies to be named. I know there are more than one but seems to me that we owe it to each other to name the companies who do not pay on time or who get the pay wrong each and every pay day. We work for a living and we do it to get paid. Even if we just put the first initial of the company, that is fair warning for others who are looking to make a change to be aware that certain companies are dangerous as far as their paying practices.
Recently I was talking to an MT who worked for one of these companies and said to me that she hated to quit because the pay was so good. That is just wrong. What pay is so good if you have to pay bank fees and overdraft charges because the money is not there. Something is wrong with that statement and wrong with that picture.
If there are any owners who are reading this that make the practice of paying late or wrong then read away. If you are doing this you don't know how to manage the company anyhow and it is my guess your days are numbered as a business but if you think we are going to sit down and take this treatment any longer without reporting to the proper authorities then you are sadly mistaken. You can throw posts in the faces of the posters all you want but when someone does not get paid for their work ON TIME, they have every right to demand that they be paid.
What is wrong with these transcription companies
I cannot believe the lack of communication with the company I worked for for 13 years and the new one that I just quit, after not even completing training. They show you something for less than an hour and then you are on your own, stuck in your own mess. Then you go to quit and never hear from the manager who was supposed to call you between 24-48 hours after starting. I had sent an e-mail asking if the person could call me and no reponse. I decide to call and leave a voice mail and no response. I think I am just going to give up transcription. I had done this for many, many years and really am thoroughly disgusted.
Are there actually companies out there that tell you what you did wrong on the test?
I have never heard of any that would do that...
Great... *** is wrong with these companies? Ugh..nm
fingers not working properly. Please ignore the typos. Need my coffee.
nm
I can't figure out how to use the shorthand properly (brain dead I guess) (sm)
Maybe I haven't taken enough time to learn it (I can be a bit impatient with myself), but I seem to have a mental block and have about given up. I used to have Smartype with my old system (before DQS) and wonder if it worked with Vianeta. Anyway, anyone out here, what do you use other than the ShortHand that comes with it?
Who's really acting like a 14-year-old???
She is using the same word a previous poster used and agreeing with her post.
I really question the reading comprehension of some of the posters on the forum. It appears a few jump mid-topic in to blast someone before they've even bothered to read an entire thread.
I know we're all short of time and usually posting as time permits, but I wish everyone would take the time to read an entire thread before jumping on someone with both feet.
Talk about acting like a 14-year-old...*eye roll*
Now you could use the phone number of an acting coach
so immature
Wrong. Companies chose to or not to offshore work, nobody makes them. sm
My company does not offshore work, absolutely will not. We've actually gained/kept accounts assuring clients that we do not. We have many clients, cutting edge technology for both customer and employee, a healthy growth rate and a high MT retention rate. It's not impossible to have a successful USA-only based company. Sadly that may not be the norm anymore, but it's a choice MTSO/CEOs (whatever they may be) make and in my opinion maybe cutting some of the bottom line and offshoring is being done in place of producing a high quality of work that keeps a customer happy and not looking around for other service options. Subsequently I think these companies then suffer inferior work further because they are paying less and/or maybe have contractural obligations. Personally I'd like to think they'd still prefer high quality to low prices and inferior product. I have to wonder if these offshore companies are losing just as many accounts because of their product. I just know I am glad I work for a company who doesn't outsource, doesn't plan to, and has every intention to remain successful because quality does count.
I don't think it is acting like a spoiled child to share your experience...
the original poster asked the question, we are just sharing our side of the story...
I haven't noticed my computer acting funny
but I don't see why they need a report on what we have on our computer. Can't we just email them the information they need?
The pay cut thing is really bothering me. We already work too hard for what little we make.

Just hold on a second! You're the one who is on here acting superior and talking about weeding o
"bad" transcriptionists. Can't help but wonder how good you are when you can't even form a complete sentence.
I love it when people get on here and criticize others' abilities and talk about bad Transcriptionist when their own posts are so sloppy. I love the excuse, "I'm not working now." I try to be literate whether I'm working or not. I don't have to put on my "literacy hat" when I go to work. I wear it all the time, and although I certainly understand typos and make my fair share of them, I don't understand how or why someone chooses not to be literate simply because they're not working but suddenly transforms into a competent, literate person when they are working. I just don't get it. I guess for some, literacy truly is WORK.
Like I said, everyone makes mistakes. But the next time you sit up there on your pedestal, criticize others and talk about weeding out "bad" transcriptionists, you might want to proofread your own stuff so it doesn't come back to bite you in the butt.
WRONG! WRONG! WRONG! We turn down work because so many hospitals are sm
calling wanting a company that keeps work in the USA. The trend was stronger a few years ago before it all came to light about poor quality, the woman in Pakistan who threatened to post medical records on the web, 911, etc. There are hospitals who look for US-only and they are the MAJORITY not the minority. Definitely seeing the tide turn on offshore from an MTSO perspective, both MTs and customers!!!!!
Sure, have lost patience, never lost sense of acting

You are wrong! Here is the ad. I got it too. There are no words spelled wrong and the caps are pa
This is pasted from the bottom of the email blast.
Why are you trying to stir up trouble? Keystrokes does not send ANYTHING offshore.
Here is the email blast from ILHIMA. The KS logo is at the top but does not paste here:

TransTech and Medware, are these companies considered large, medium-sized or small companies? (sm)
TIA
Yikes.. That is only inline with companies like Focus and such. "Real" companies pay their MTs
decent rate. I make over 5 cpl editing. So, if I got that slap in the face, I'd be outta there.
Do the research...most companies, and not just MT companies, do not pay for maternity leave...
we get time off but not paid...and I really don't even understand the point of you posting this...
How do you know which companies are Nationals and which are smaller companies.
Is there a list somewhere? I'm new to this.
By "most of the companies", I meant MORE than MT companies.
clarification
Sten-Tel is the platform. Different companies use it, pay and how companies run are different. nm

SO WRONG
You are so wrong in your assumption! Although she is not with us anymore, the records need to be set straight. Shannon has over 10 years of medical transcription experience and typed on every account we have at MDI. You may have thought she didn't transcribe but that was because she was too busy typing on other accounts and doing the job she was hired to do which was to manage ALL of the accounts. So before you begin to drag Shannon into the line of fire, please do your research. She was hired to do a job which she did very well and she will be sorely missed.
Wrong, just someone who has to SM
work with people like you and is really tired of listening to the persecution complex. I'll bet you have the same problems with the job you have now, right?
Wrong again
Actually, it's y'all - for you all.
Ya'll is for you will.
The contraction divides the words.
WRONG!
Before you start cutting people down, why don't you do a little bit of research on your own? Flossie is not QA DIRECTOR. BS is QA Director. Flossie is QA MANAGER. There IS a difference. And she's a DAMN GOOD ONE at that!!!!
Wrong !!!
She is out of town.
Man, you are WAY out there -- WRONG.
If you're working for MQ, you're getting up to $50 a month DSL reimbursement, not $30.
YOU pay to update your computer??? How is that?
You'd be paying your electricity anyway, unless you live so frugally from the stoneage that you don't require electricity. If you're an SE, you can claim part of that on your tax filing -- if you have a designated room for an office. As well, you can claim any rental fees for equipment -- if you're an SE.
It's your job to make sure what you are typing is correct. Asking to be paid for researching what you are responsible for is as idiotic as saying you should be paid to run spellcheck. Geez.
Virtually every part of the demographic screen is filled in and they provide all the search tools for that. On occasion you MIGHT have to type a patient's name in. Get over your bad self.
If you want to be paid for actual time you spend regardless of how productive it is in lines, then you need a job with an hourly pay instead of production. That simply isn't how it is done. You don't like it? Get an hourly job. Don't like that? Get into a different line of work.
That is where you are wrong...
There are a lot of MTs employed at OSi, so where does this "me along with everyone else" come in to place. Oh, let me guess...you and all the other smart people? lol! too funny
Are you ever wrong about anything?
Opinions are always welcome...if they are not shoved down our throats. You make me choke.
What is wrong with you?
You obviously do not work for MQ and are very rude.
You are wrong
Nothing is paid for if you work out of Amherst MQ other than production time and PTO time. I was directly told that. No exceptions!
You are wrong.
I work for Diskriter and THEY DO pay for downtime. They have been more than fair with my pay. Do not post things that are not true, you are WRONG.
Wrong
I have worked as an Editor for a US company. I am not the owner of a MT company. I did an excellent job there and left because I chose to leave for a better opportunity. The US company where I worked had MT's call in sick daily, yet the HR person was constantly receiving emails from them about the possibility of a raise. They complained about not having enough work, yet when they were offered the opportunity to work on another account, they refused. I know that there are many quality US MT's who care about the level of quality of the work they produce. Yet there are many who are lazy and do not care about the quality of their work who constantly call in with excuses about why they can't work their shift. And US MT's (many of them) are constant job hoppers. MTSO's have a responsibility to provide their clients with a product. If they can't count on you to work your shift, you leave them with little choice.
My experience since working for a company who offshores has been totally opposite. These MT's are eager to work. They are meticulous about the quality of every report they produce. They are eager to improve their skills as an MT. They are all educated. It's amazing that they are able to produce work that rivals yours in quality and most often exceeds it when English is not their native language. You may not want to hear this, but the truth is the truth.
Don't take this the wrong way, but
I found more than 10 spelling and grammar errors in your post, and that didn't even take into consideration the punctuation errors. Granted, this isn't work so nitpicking isn't necessary. However, why should you make as much as the experienced transcriptionists who are doing the more difficult work without errors? I was at the second highest level at S. and was off QA in less than a week. I did ESL all day long and had three different accounts to learn in less than three weeks. I consistently produce 250 lines per hour on one of my accounts without an expander, 350-400 with the expander.
You tell us how fast and accurate you are, but you're not seeing the whole picture. You can either take on a more difficult account to get a higher line rate or start using an expander. Honestly, I wouldn't take on the more difficult account if it was my choice. You're better off typing faster and using the Expander on an easier account to make more money. Don't they offer an incentive plan for lines produced, too?
My bad. I was wrong.
nm
Wrong, wrong, and very wrong.
All three of the first points are incorrect, won't even go into the rest because they're subjective. Please contact a recruiter for accurate information.
Don't get me wrong...they are very...
nice people. Unfortunately neither the owner nor office people have any MT experience, and all MTs are expected to not need QA. For a newibe that can make it very difficult. Without feedback it's impossible to know if you make an error, and you'll never know what your blanks were. That makes it very difficult to improve when there are never answers . . .
I could be wrong, but
somewhere sometime I read they outsource work to India or they are an Indian company fronting in the US. I can't seem to find that info right now.
i think actually you are wrong about that
whuzup w/you?
oh, get over it. nothing wrong with it.
lol
Wrong!
The MTSO is only paid about half of their normal line rate when quoting VR work. No increased profits.
You can say if I'm wrong, but I almost SM
feel like they might have thought you would be a high-maintenance MT? Okay, what I mean by that is this--did you have to call them a lot with technical problems? Were you able to operate the software without a problem or were you getting stuck in various reports? Was the work you did get to turn in good? Meaning no medical terminology errors, etc.? or did you leave a ton of blanks (even if you were just learning the account?
If it makes you feel any better, there have been a number of recent posts stating that Breitner owes some people money, so it is doubtful that you would be getting a regular paycheck with them anyway.
You are wrong
I dont know how you can speak for the industry but I know for a fact a person with a lot of influence in the industry read me off names of MTs to avoid. If that is not a list I dont know what is.
Wrong??? No way!
Peter Preziosi and other AAMT bigwigs openly admit that they are helping MT industries in other countries. This is not a secret. They are not even ashamed of what they do.
Wrong
I as a new MT other than working for one physician in OH. I had to take what i could get and as single mom of 3 myself one of which was diagnosed ped. bipolar and has been in and out of inpatient and we as a whole family have been through hell getting him the treatment he needs and DESERVES. I as a new MT jumped at the perks that Heartland had to offer adn the fact i have been able to home school my son with me working from home and at the drop of a hate it is all taken away to give jobs those who work for next to nothing. AS someone else said you get what you pay for. Yes it cost more for us than them, but I am sure the quailty of our work far better and better works, means happy clients and more work, which in the long run means profit. take the work overseas and get less quality and you get clients who are made and leave you butt behind. myself i carry the diagnoses of cardiomyopathy, left ventricular dysfunction, GERD, meniere's disease, and hypertension and I needed Heartland's insurance and many other great perks.
We as AMERICANS need to stop putting up with all of the jobs that we are losing to low paid people over seas. Big companies are killing the AMERICAN DREAM and we have to put a stop to it as a country.
Wrong!
Very good company to work for! Happy employees. The ones let go are ONLY let go because they refuse to stay in TAT. We get everyone a chance!
I was wrong! SM
I don't live in Tennessee (but my old company is based there), so I looked up their law on this, and here is what I found:
Tennessee Wage Regulation Act Title 50-2-101
What is the law concerning payment of final paychecks to employees?
Tennessee employees who are laid off, fired, or who quit must be paid their wages in full at the next regular payday, not to exceed 21 days from the date of their discharge or termination. Wages include vacation time earned by the employee. Claims against an employer for late payment may be filed with the Labor Standards Division. The Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development has the authority to enforce this law. You may review this law at Tennessee Revised Statutes Title 50-2-103(g)
Oh well! LOL In the state where I reside, you have to pay your employees on their last day (if they give at least 3 days' notice), otherwise you have to pay them on the next business day!
Have a good weekend everyone!
No,that's wrong (sm)
I seriously doubt you would be expected to type more than one (maybe 2 with 1 as a backup) just because they have a new account. It is a well-run company and they want you to be familiar with 1 account so that you can make money; if you type a lot, they make more money as well. That's as it should be. The hospital you are inquiring about is a multi-specialty hospital. I've been there for almost a year and it's the best job I've had in years.
