Serving Over 20,000 US Medical Transcriptionists

Various things have happened over the years

In Reply to: This is unbelievable- Anyone experience this from a company - ICMT

But I was an employee then, not an independent. You could go ahead and go, probably would not have a job when you returned or you could work and accept the terms. I planned ahead of time 1 year to take some time off to attend Thanksgiving dinner/stay out of town, boss said ok and when it came down to time she had forgotten, I would not have been paid and she said oh I guess you want your cake and eat it too. A couple of days later I came into her office, told her I had been to bingo, won the $300 prize that night, taking off and yes, I guess I could have my cake and eat it too. That was a big lie but she did not know. My father said to get things down in writing from then on. Being as you need the job, that is what you had to do but others fall into this same spot I am sure.

so many bad things happened to the travelers
They have about 11 travelers. They used to have more. A lot of the transcriptionists quit after one assignment. The company will tell you that they pay for everything - they don't. You pay up front for everything.

They will tell you that you are going to be gone for 10 days, and you are still at the same hospital six months later.

They tell you that you will have a rental car ..... NO WAY IN HELL, UNLESS YOU ARE IN A REMOTE AREA. You will be driving to your assignments with your own car.

You do not get to pick your assignments. I mean let's be realistic .... there is not a huge demand for transcriptionists to come onsite, especially with the ability to outsource.

the most important part -- they tell you that they can keep you busy year round. They will even tell you to get rid of your apartment because you will never be there. Guess what??? Doesn't happen. I was three months without an assignment. three months without a paycheck. They would call occasionally and say, "can you be ready to go to such and such if I call you?" I would say yeah, sure, I'll start packing. Then I would sit by the phone and wait and wait and wait. I would call back, only to be told that "oh, that didn't go through."

The pay -- I am being totally honest on the pay -- you can make the same amount working at home depending on how fast you are. They pay each transcriptionist differently - anywhere from $14/hour to $18/hour.

I have left out the stories of the things that happened to me while on the road, as well as some of my former coworkers. They were not all good experiences. By no means is it glamorous and a great experience. There were times that some of travelers were put in pretty rough situations and Kforce just left them hanging there to fend for themselves.

Hiring practice - no one has been able to figure that out. I, myself, had worked with two travelers that could barely understand medical terminology. Kforce has turned away people with 12+ years experience and single with no children. Kforce has hired women that have young children at home and would tell them "oh, you can go home every weekend and we'll pay for it." Guess what? The traveler ended up paying for it out of pocket because the hospital did not want to pay for that and Kforce wouldn't reimburse.

Paychecks - nightmare situations. Won't get into it on the board. Taxes - even bigger nightmare. That was a complaint that many of the travelers had -- taxes and paychecks were a nightmare, i.e. never getting our checks on time and getting fed a ton of lines like "Fed Ex lost it again," "I mailed it to you over a week ago, you should have gotten it. CAn you call someone to send you money in the meantime..." stuff like that. Taxes were a nightmare because they would take taxes out of you for states you didn't even reside in, exemptions that you didn't put down, etc. Cost me quite a bit of $$ to have a tax accountant fix that.

I have heard that Diskriter and Maxim supposedly have travel assignments once in awhile.

I hope this helps out.
Stranger things have happened in

Merry Christmas to you! I would definitel;y tell your manager; a lot of things could have happened
I would not just forget it, and I disagree with you, it is relatively easy for things to happen - the mail could be lost, any number of things could have happened and have happened in the past. I would definitely tell your manager at Transcend that you did not get a card or gift card -- as the intent was for EVERY PERSON TO TO GET A CARD.

With that said, I would think about your employment. If you are not comfortable enough talking to your manager and would rather come out to a message board, you should seriously think about finding a company that you can be more comfortable with and truly enjoy.

It's a shame that Transcend tried to do something really nice for their employees and there are always one or two people that will still come on and bash. It does happen with every company though, I actually saw someone post about another company and asked Why did they only send us $25, that was cheap!.

LOL --

Happened to me also about 5 years ago. I try to warn
but e-Tranz keeps sucking in the new ones who either haven't seen the warnings or chose not to heed the advice of those who've BTDT.  Agree with the poster who said that DG butters you up at first, calls you babe, tells you I bet someone's already snatched you up already, but that's short-lived.  First come the late paychecks, then come no paychecks, then comes a long, drawn-out war with her to try to get her to pay you.  I can't believe she's still in business after stiffing so many MTs for so long.  Oddly enough (or maybe not), she seems to take pride in that.
Same thing happened to me, but it's been years.nm
nm
Same thing happened to me about 3-4 years ago
Company ended up filing bankruptcy so no one got paid
That happened to me too with 10 years of experience.

It recommened I go take an MT course with Career Step.

I am looking at other options.  I am going to get my CNA certificate renewed and I am also studying to be a pharm tech.  I am not going back to MT school with Career Step or anyone else.

Yes, it happened to me, years ago. I knew it was WRONG!!!
probably a certain portion are new, believe it and sign up for their MT class
Been a few years since I worked there so things
may be different now.  But, I had to rerecord, account was 85% Indian, can't remember pay, but it certainly wasn't enough to compensate for having the combination above.  The office was also calling me up to 6 times a day, not necessarily for anything work related either.  They seemed to be so disorganized that they had to call several times a day to ask questions instead of just asking everything at once.  I didn't think their system was that user friendly either.  I only lasted a couple of months.
Thanks but all it brought up was things from 4-5 years ago.
How do I find some current things? It'd be nice to think that over time, something, anything has changed to a positive way, but I'd be lying if what was going on even that long ago doesn't give me pause for thought.  I want to think that a few years ago people weren't getting paid on time but I could be wrong on which company I am remembering.
The same thing happened to me 2 years ago. That Indian creep gets people to work

for him. He gives this scale of how you are supposed to be paid, but it NEVER, EVER is the high range that you KNOW you are owed and deserve.  So, then your production and earning come up and they are WAY off base.  On top of that, he either pays you late or not at all.  This is fair warning...DO NOT WORK FOR CALLSTREET!

You're welcome. As I said, this was 5 years ago or so. Things could have changed. sm

I would just be careful.  They used to have a woman in the office named Crystal.  I would call and tell her I had run out of work, and she would just laugh and tell me to take the day off!  How nice ... except that I needed the money.  In all fairness, though, I am sure they could not have stayed in business and kept employees if they kept on that way.  I read awhile back that if you pay $20 each check or something like that that they will Fed Ex your check to you, so maybe they are trying, although I don't think you should have to pay for it.

Good luck in finding something.  I know what it is like to be the sole source of income.

Not true. I worked at Transcend for years and things have

For years people at Transcend were very friendly and the only time things got really heated on the forum were over personal opinion posts like politics and stuff.  Not any more.  More and more people are to the point of not knowing what to do with this company anymore.  People who have been there years and years have quit or are quitting, and I think most of the peers that are happy are relatively new and haven't seen the downward spiral.  A friend of mine quit a while ago and said she got a letter about a month after she quit asking her to sign a release saying she wouldn't take Transcend to court or be party to any claims relating to her employment with Transcend.  If things were that hunky dory they wouldn't be so scared that they need to ask people to sign waivers when they leave.

I cannot say enough good things about Keystroke, not just one month but years
I remember when they were having growing pains and I was with another company and saw them on this board. Lee even got on to defend her company. At least she cared and nothing but good things have happened to this company. She still cares. Recently complaints were of running out of work and needing secondaries, and high insurance. She contacted all MTs and has been working on and from what I understand is correcting all that. She is a hands on owner and appears to deeply care for the Transcriptionist even though she cannot see our faces.

All of my posting is from hands on experiences and if for 2 years I can say this is where I want to retire after all the other companies I have had to go through, I am only trying to help and not post pie in the sky hoopla to rope anyone in. This is a down to earth, straight shooting company that I am sure is in it for profit but deeply cares for the transcriptionists who work for her and not make that profit while we eat 69 cent pot pies because our pay checks are so crummy. it takes time even for a good transcriptionists to get familiar with a new account but if the dictation is fairly distributed (I mean first in, first out, unless other arrangements are made between you and the company) then there is hope and a chance to make a living. I don't think it is fair to complete with your team leaders for dictation because they will always win and you will be left with what they do not want as they have dictation goals too with some nationals along with supposedly helping you. That is my 2 cents.
If you made a graph of all the things taken away by Edix/Speris in the last 5 years.....
You would be shocked, although it has been 6 years since it started.....

first charging for errors, about 6 years ago (they stopped that), then insurance changed for the worst, regrading hospitals to their advantage so you would make at least 200. to 300 less a pay period, the list is long, long, long. I can go back 6 years up to 2 years ago when I finally left.
I've been there for years, work on the DSG1 side of things, pay on time, direct deposit, more
feedback lately.  I have always found the staff and MTs helpful and friendly.  Work does fluctuate, but if you have a few accounts, should keep you busy, also sound quality can be an issue but mostly okay.
No. Expect good things, and good things will come
x
I talked to them today. They want 3 years in a hospital or 5 years combination sm
hospital and at home or clinic and at home. For radiology, they want 3 years full time radiology. I thought they were very nice and I have a few friends that work for them and are happy. The pay seems average to high for what I am seeing now. I think they are 0.08 per line or 1.08 for radiology. Beats what I will have with the new MQ program.
Honda is 11 years old, 190,000 miles . Toyota was 15 years old and 279,000 superb

I worked on site for many years. I've been doing this for 10 years... sm
I've worked on site, at home, for small MTSOs, for nationals, for hospitals. I've been paid per line, per minute, and per hour. I've been an MT and a QA. I have ALWAYS worked weekends and ALWAYS worked nights for the shift differential because MTs can't survive on 6 or 7 cents a line. At least I can't and I type 105 wpm.

I've BEEN dedicated from day 1, sister, so you are barking up the wrong tree.
15,000 lines per pay period. 8 years with KS, 6 years on this account! nm
Not going anywhere else!
30 years - this WAS my career. The last few years you guys have ruined it.
You work 9-5? Big deal. I work more than you do. I bet I work harder too. Treat US with respect, lady!

Don't talk to us like that and don't expect us to kiss your feet. Kiss ours for a change!
See if you'll be producing more after 30 years of MT'ing and at 50+ years old.
I don't think so. My income increased every year also, until I reached age 50 and 30 years of MT'g, been downhill ever since.
It wasn't tough 5 years ago. Or 10 years ago, yet
How to you spell
G-R-E-E-D ???

All the shifty, dishonest, greedy pigs in this country belong in JAIL.
I did that, but nothing happened

I have a scroll mouse, but font is still same size.  Appreicate the tip, though...never knew that one.

Thanks for posting!

What had happened was, sm
I've known Linda for over a decade now. In the timeline of the article, which is during the time that I've known her, I've only known of Executive Secretarial Services. In many other interviews and articles, she's plainly stated about changing her goals and target market, hence the name change to ExecuScribe to reflect that she's not just a secretarial service. The ESS name can't attract MT clients, and she wanted to open herself up to that market. The articles and a conversation we had both reflect the same.

I think that all of this is a tragedy. This happened 15 years ago and for the RBJ to be rehashing all of this doesn't serve any constructive purpose whatsoever. What it will do is hurt Linda, her clients, her staff, and the community, which could very well trickle down to the MTSOs in our area. She paid her dues and it should have been left alone. The RBJ staff writer was wreckless and irresponsible in bringing this to the forefront. What I can't figure out is how all of this started in the first place, i.e., what made RBJ investigate into their past?

Rochester is dying and has been for years. We have no major or attractive employers anymore except for SMH and the non-degreed positions there are only a tad over minimum wage. Over half of the city population lives in poverty-like conditions and we have one of the highest murder rates in the country. On a national level, she did bring Rochester some recognition and she also provided local jobs.

Again, I think all of this is a mess. You have to admit that Linda's a tough one though. In the article, it stated that she made an "impassioned plea," but it was only ONCE and that was it. She didn't grovel. She's kept her self-respect intact. She's smart and she's also very savvy. She'll pick herself up and dust herself off and go about business. What she did build is very impressive, as have all local MTSOs, which I've had the pleasure of meeting in the past decade.

A lot of people are going to get hurt from this because of careless journalism. The mighty always fall the hardest. I don't think that any of us should rejoice in another's hardship.
this happened at my last job
People were staying up all night working,by the time 8 a.m. rolled around...no work...soooo frustrating for those of us who sleep at night. Had to get away from that, plus the boss had favorites that got all the cake work and the rest of us were stuck struggling with whattever was left over...definitely not an even distribution of work. I asked my boss about it, but of course, I was being crazy....
happens to all... happened to me
But i only was for 2 weeks.
Oh no! Not you too me2!! IT happened to me, too:)
Sorry, but that struck me as funny saying you2 me 2, happened to me2.
Something that has happened to me lately at MDI
I will dial in and get the no more reports message.  A few minutes later I will dial in and start getting reports from the night before or whatever, dictated obviously before the last time I dialed in.  My question is - where were those reports the first time I dialed in?  Do they transfer them off of the hospital system onto MDI's system and maybe they weren't transferred yet?  Just puzzles me when that happens and it's happened several times lately.
I'm sorry this happened to you. If it were me, sm

I would resign to keep my record clean, and try like heck to get another job but this time in a hospital or clinic and get my production skills up.  If you try and get another job at home (I'm under the assumption you might be a newbie), this could happen again.   You don't need that.

As for unemployment payments, I doubt you could get them if you resigned.  You'd be better off getting another job right away.

Good luck!  I hope things work out for you.

It has happened to me too

Sort of the same thing happened to me as well, right before Christmas, different company though.  I had been told prior by someone that my accuracy was at 99%; only to be told by someone different that I was being fired because my quality had gone down over the last few pay periods, but what is odd, is I never got any type of feedback.

I am still relatively new to this profession--having only graduated in June of 2005.  I had also contacted my supervisor and asked how well I was doing prior to the firing, only to be told that I was doing great, and to keep up the good work. Then be e-mailed--not called--but e-mailed stating that I had been terminated effective immediately. That was the worst time to be fired from a job because NO ONE hires right before Christmas, and I am still trying to find another place.

Good luck to you

This happened to me.

Go to a different branch of your bank and this time DON'T tell them that you had your passcode with the card.  They can look up where the money was withdrawn and they will reimburse you (my bank did).  Then go to the police and they will send an officer with you to go to the bank wherever the money was withdrawn.  A report will be made out and they will check the surveillance tape to see who it was, as long as that ATM has cameras.

Good luck to you!  Dont' give up on this.

This is not what happened to me (sm)
Maybe it depends on the account, but I log off whenever I want a break.  I don't have to stay on the entire 8 hours straight.  Demographics didn't have to be filled in.  They were already there.  The only time I have to type anything on demographics is when there is a change, or I have to do a seach for the correct admission.
What ever happened to DSG? Are they still around?
nm
This also happened to me at my last job...sm
Even when I said something...i was crazy and when my line count dropped they wondered why. They actually accused me of not working up to my potential in order to get benefits for my disabled son, well not acused, asked me if that was what was up. No, it wasn't....I left shortly after that last insult.

If I were you...I would most definitely say something and keep saying something or ask for a difficultly premium or something. It is unfair in my opinion.
happened to me, too. .. (sm)
only they disquised it as a new revised pay scale. Lots of patient demos and flipping thru schedules and faxes, low work volume... I would say look elsewhere, too.
Happened to me twice.

I submitted resume to one company, they didn't have any openings, so they sent it to another company that they knew had openings.  Guess they were buddies.  Another time, they saw my resume on monster.com

It happened to me also (twice)
Don't feel left out. This happened to me twice by Zylomed in Florida and Alex Medical Transcription in Virginia. They offered me a position, told me they would send me my papers, and I never received anything. I sent several e-mails and no reply. That just tells you how disrespectful a company can be when they treat employees or future employees this way. This must be a signal that the company is not worth our time and there are other better companies out there. Good luck!
Yes -just happened again to me.
Really tired of it. They should spread them around. Why should every day be hard for me because they cannot do the tough people???
This happened to me once and this is what I did..sm
I was somewhere for only 6 weeks, it took them 5 wks (3 wks overdue) just to get first paycheck, I was begging for work, so just say see ya.  The gave me promises that were never fulfilled.  I was hired under false pretences and felt I owed them nothing.  They couldn't even give me work and when they did, couldn't even pay on time.  I already had another job lined up that needed me immediately that I could devote 40 hours + a week to, so why waste 2 wks?  I just decided I wouldn't ever put them on a resume or use them as a reference.  So I just sent them an email and asked them if they could possibly send me my last paycheck and the actually did.  If they are breaking contract you don't owe them anything especially if you are an IC.  JMO.
This has happened to me (sm)

Most of the time I just ignore what I see.  However, if it is a blatant error, as you describe, I would either report it to the QA people or Support.  How did you know, though, that it was never sent to QA for blanks?  Is it possible that she sent them and they couldn't fill in either?  As far as format goes, though, I would say that's a biggie.  Maybe it is something that MT was doing and has since stopped.  I would report it, though.  No one will be mad at you for doing it - as I said, I have done it for big things and actually was told at one time when I started that I should.

Happened to me also
I have 10+ years' experience in orthopedics and they told me that I did not pass either. They would not show me my test results either, but just told me that I did not pass the test. Company sounds strange in my opinion.
Never happened to me
And, I'm sure that the people in ops don't know how many hours everyone has worked during the week so far.  We aren't required to clock in and clock out, per se.  We do have a timesheet but obviously it's not always current for everyone, and the people in ops don't have access to that anyway as far as I know.  Many people don't work their full hours when they are supposed to and have time to make up from time to time.  If an account is behind, I think that ops is asked to call and see if they can get help.  All you have to do is say I've already worked my full hours for the week.  Not a problem.
what happened with the lay off?
I was hired and they couldnt keep everyone in work.  Did they fix this.  I quit as I was told I would have to scramble for line counts.
sorry it happened the same day
telling you if it continues this way they will issue corrective action? Sorry about your mom.
What ever happened to....(sm)
*It's the thought that counts*? I appreciate being remembered and it was certainly a more useful MT Week gift than some I've received -- or not received -- from some other MTSOs over the years.

What I REALLY wanted, though, was an Acusis logo tee-shirt like the CEO was wearing in the web conference.
So sorry that happened to you. nm
x
What happened to QT?

Here is what happened to me...sm
After I found out I was hired they said it would a week or two before I could get trained, and the computer would be shipped to be ready ahead of that date. They actually gave me a date it would show up to make sure I'd be around to sign for it, but it came a day sooner and caught me off guard. I was home so it worked out, so just something to keep in mind.
This happened to me too!
I called HP, (type of computer I have) and they couldn't help me. The place where I bought my computer could not help me. The company I was going to work for couldn't help me. Finally figured it out on my own. If it is still showing up in your program list under CHANGE/ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS, click on change instead of remove (this worked for me) and then I was able to remove it. Don't ask me why. If it isn't showing up, try reinstalling it and then try the above method. Hope it works for you.
