Their new accounts are unpleasant to work on to say the least. They are no different than a lot of the other companies now.

Feast or famine. Always a different work load every day, and you often run out if the work gets

VERY unorganized, ancient software, rude people running that show NM

If you like feast or famine (sm)
work on their demand and off when they command, evening and weekend work, poor management, poor communication, and don't mind companies that offshore, it might be the place for you.  I'd give them a hands down.
Feast or famine with VR (sm)
It seems they are constantly calling you off.  I hated working that way.You get momentum and then you are told to stop working.  Many empty promises with the VR accounts.  Too many I know have had high hopes to be shot down.  If you don't mind working under those conditions it might work for you.  Good luck.
That's how they are...feast or famine!

feast or famine

The nature of the transcription business, from personal experience, is feast or famine, with usually not much in between.

In other words, learn to get while the getting is good so you're prepared for the leaner days and can carve out a decent average for yourself in accordance with your budget and paycheck you have to make to pay your bills. You DO have a personal budget and know the income you need to pull in on a consistent basis, right?

Having said that, if you're with a company for several weeks, and there is little to no work at all, that's when you begin sending out resumes and executing Plan B (you DO have Plan B, right? And C and D if necessary, right?). Cycles are expected. A consistent bare trickle that never picks up, is not. That means the company has really bad personnel management skills or is losing accounts and unable to pull any new accounts in, and so it's time for you to consider your options because things are not going to change.

If this is really your situation, then you should a) notify your current employer that you're scaling back to part time or per diem (and provide them with the times you will be available) and b) get another job ASAP to make up for it. I know a few MTs that work for more than one company, part time, and between the two pull in a nice paycheck. It's smart, especially if neither of them have guaranteed work for you to fill a full-time schedule and make a full-time paycheck.

Remember, you're working for YOU, not your employer. And you should have high expectations from yourself to meet your own needs instead of relying so heavily on other people, whether they send you a paycheck or not. :)

Feast or famine is pretty much a given with
Sometimes you need to take the good with the bad. No employer is perfect, I guess.
Three words.. FEAST OR FAMINE..
That's all I have. Some good productive days, other times Mojave Desert and asked not to log on for a while to let the work built up. Wish I could be more help.
MTSO feast and famine

After working for a hospital medical records department for over 15 years, which I know realize was a cushy job and not the norm, and now working for 2 services and still not making enough money, I'm curious to know if anyone else is struggling financially because of the constant feast or famine syndrome.  I realize that on my FT job, they basically want transcriptionists available 24/7 even though you clearly have set schedule, and being available 24/7 is probably the only way to make your quota with the ups and downs in the work.  Unfortunately, I have 2 jobs, 2 children, a dog and a significant other and really can't be strapped to this computer day and night...not to mention I need to eat, shower and sleep....

How is one to survive?  Should I be working 3 jobs? I need help.

Feast or famine is all part of this field.

I know that is tough to get used to, but even when you have your own accounts, the workload can wax and wane. It can also change overnight.  I have my own accounts that wax and wane.  You can never really count on anything being absolute in this field.  These companies can only offer you what they have because it depends on the dictator and how much work there is at any given time.  Almost any company will tell you this if you haven't already experienced the same.  It is unfortunate, however, this field does require some flexibility.  I guess that may come with more years of experience and being in the know upfront that nothing is forever.  A lot of time these larger companies only can sign 3-5 year contracts.  I am an IC (not for Transcend), and when there is a need, boy the e-mails come sailing through asking can I help, but when the work is low, my e-mail is dry.  Adapting and adjusting is all part of this field for sure.

P/S:  I was a employee at one time for Transcend, but I do believe they are offering contracts at this point to IC as I did see a recent post.

My solution to the feast or famine syndrome

I work part-time with a daily number of lines to complete, no set schedule.  My work is usually pretty steady, but over the holiadys when things slowed down, I decided to get another part-time job.  I ended up in direct home sales.  I make more money at it than I do MTing and I get to set my own schedule.  I usually do 2 shows a week, averaging about $150 to $200 per show.  The shows take about 3 hours in total and the computer work is about an hour or less.

It also gets me out of the house and gives me a break from my kids.  I will say that I'm pretty fortunate that my husband has a M-F 8-4 job, so he's able to be home with the kids on the evenings I do these.

I keep a separate checking account for my business and it's really neat to watch it grow.  I'm saving the money for a rainy day (or famine) and when I get to a certain amount, we're putting in a pool.  I'm halfway there already.

No way would I stay attached to my computer.  If things are slow, I put that time into my new business and work on getting new shows booked or party games or invitations.  There's always something productive to do.

Three words..Feast or Famine.., disorganized, and bad communication, anything else??
I wish I had more positives other than pay is on time. That is about the only positive at all.
3rd shift radiology can be like that. Feast or famine. Same with 3rd shift sm
ER work. Sometimes the doctors are too busy to dictate, so they do it at the end. Why don't you talk to them and ask about a different shift?
DSG - Rude people, ran out of work, shuffled around on multiple accounts!
nm
I worked for SS and some people were very RUDE and I am talking about the editing people in some
instances.  It ALL depends on the person, as it does with any company.  They paid on time and the lady over me was very nice, but boy the person in QA was mean to EVERYONE!!  Never seen anything like it before.
Unorganized, no communication, no work

DTS is not a good place to work. Very unorganized. sm
They have offices in Nashville and Carlsbad, I know. I was all hyped to work for them but it was such a disappointment. They kept losing my paperwork and were adamant about your hours worked. The recruiter was horrible, but now they have the former SPI recruiter, so who knows? The manager was ridiculous. Not far, very nasty tempered.
some people can't help but be rude..

I don't really appreciate being described as promoting hocus pocus...I was just describing - very poorly I know - what happens to me and I know alot of others who use dictaphone...that the computer you are typing on can sometimes be overwhelmed by dictaphone and vpn and it will intermittently slow down - and you will experience a lag in your typing - which was what I was trying to describe...maybe these are just older computers I don't know but you seem to have a real axe to grind..I was simply conveying my experience...maybe you need to get a life, or learn to handle your anger a little better, or better yet get back to work...this is my day off what's your excuse? I apologize I did not describe this adequately, but just because you haven't encountered something doesn't mean it doesn't exist..
No, not rude, some people will only or can only do ERs. I know of some that sm
don't want to do operative reports and such. I can see where they might be intimidating for a new transcriptionist. I was not trying nor was that a rude statement. Sorry you took it that way.

Rude people but at least Talon is gone. nm

Look above, I corrected myself, how rude people are here.nm
nm
Also agree, but I think the rude QA people mentioned are gone. nm
x
Well, boo frickety hoo! So you encountered some rude people...

this is business baby, it's not your mama's house or church.  Suck it up and do your job.  Not everyone is nice.  Not everyone wakes up in the morning and sings with the birds and whistles while they work.

I wasn't rude. All I said was that if I was trying to profit from recruiting people, I would
have left contact information. I didn't get called out and was never rude. How is stating FACTS rude? I'm also not offended because your logic makes no sense to me. I speak the truth. But it doesn't matter. If we have anything negative or positive to say about ANY company whatsoever, we're either recruiters or disgruntled ex-employees. I didn't get called out because there was nothing to call out on. Please, take your senseless accusations elsewhere. The board administrators know exactly who I am, so they can back me up when I say that I'm not a recruiter. I'm (GASP!) a happy employee FINALLY after ages of searching for the right company!!!!
I told you--these people weren't only extremely rude and mean..
But really dense!!  I can't believe they keep posting and proving 'me' point.
DSG - Really rude group of people, especially the acute care side.
Got tired of their snarky remarks and moved on. Make 25% more where I am now doing easier QA and really nice group of people. Good luck to you!
true about the people being rude, not to mention, don't call you back. nm
,,
The rude rude rude post is TRUE
.
My only contact with them was rude. The front office person or whomever schedules interviews is rude
This was about a year ago but I set up an interview and either I was supposed to call them or they were to call me at a certain time but I totally spaced off the time change. The lady went off on me and told me that they had no interest in me because I couldn't call on time etc. Rude. There is no way I would ever work for someone like that.
They are rude to work with as well
x
Who said people who work for KS aren't happy for people who work for (sm)
other companies?  I'm happy for people who are happy with their jobs, no matter what company they work for.
Terrible to work for, bad communication, rude
nm
Just be rude..out and out rude so they have just cause to "fire" you.. haha..What a bunch of i
Who would want to work for incompetent people like that. Time to change your phone numbers. They are like bad stalkers.
Famine indeed
I would rather have bologna sandwiches and Kool-Aid that were a sure thing every day than to have a big steak once every couple of months.  My tummy would rumble a lot less.
I worked for them. Very unorganized and...

at one time they decided to not pay for any report with anything QA (and QA was a real joke) could call an account-specific error.  There were hundreds of pages of account specifics.  Even worse than that was that within the same account, there were doctor specifics...and hundreds of doctors!  By the time you figured out who wanted what, you wasted a tremendous amount of time.

My QA person was not an MT - never had been.  She had a BOS and maybe 2 Stedman's Word Books, but she knew it all.

I do know they have more accounts than they used to, and the "Gerger" of Gerger-Moretti is gone, so maybe things have changed.

They are the most unorganized place ever. sm
had to send paperwork 4 times because they kept losing it. Crappy attitudes. Do not know how to treat people nice.
extremely unorganized and this

is after being offered a position three times by this company over the past few years and each time I have been turned off by how unorganized they are over there.  I had the same experience this past week with them not getting back to me.  Then they did and told me about two positions.  I told her the one I was interested in but needed an answer about the ins.  Then they called me back the next day but she forgot why I was even waiting for the call and then to top it off was told the position that I was interested was no longer available.  This is the third experience with them.  I don't have time to tell you about the first two.  Incredible.  I have a better job offer from TT (actually to return back to them on a better account) and Axolotl which I will decide on by tomorrow, and another from Transcend which I am turning down but Transcend is right on, very organized, answered all my questions, and told me what all she had available and I picked the one I wanted, no surprises and no being left hanging, immediately sent me the ins info by email before we even got off the phone!  That is the way a company should be run as far as HR is concerned.  The two that I am deciding on also are very efficient in answering ALL questions in a TIMELY MANNER and are organized.  Debbie is great and Axolotl is very very nice and polite and immediately sent me the information I needed such as INSURANCE.  I need to have questions answered before accepting a position.  I will not go in blindly.  I have a chronically sick daughter for crying out loud and some companies did not even have the decency to respond to me on ins. so they got nothing back from me.  Oh and get this when I finally did get the ins. information from KS it was this!! http://www.geoaccess.com/phcs/po/  No information on nothing, just a provider look up and when you click on the home icon and travel your way through the website trying to find info there is nothing that states anything about what the coverage is!!

I will never apply for KS again.  Three strikes and your'e out!!

very unorganized when I worked for them
When I worked for Inscribe last year, it was very unorganized...was hired and then it took them months to get me actually working. As soon as I got an account and started making money on it, they would pull me and put me on another account so I didn't make as much. I got pulled 3 times in about 2 1/2 weeks so I was not making any money. Also, yes, they do charge you for any mistakes that they have to fix. When they make a correction, they fax you a copy of the correction and when they did that, if they have trouble with their fax, that time is taken out of your pay. Ridiculous huh? Also, when I would go to get work, there was never any to pick up. When I inquired about this, I was told to sign on to another account and get work there but none of those accounts had work either. I would maybe get 1/2 work for the 4 hours shift I was scheduled. I still keep in contact with a woman that was one of the originals helping to get this company off the ground. She left because they were so disorganized. I quit after about 5 months of trying anything to get this to work. I went back to getting my own accounts and now am also in college for accounting. Definitely more money in that line of work!
Seems to be good and bad in the archives. Rude & running out of work to very professional, great
s
Terribly unorganized is just the beginning with them
They take your lines from, send rude e-mails daily, never answer your questions, and have about 90% ESL.  Too bad you took the job as I would recommend you go elsewhere.
Because instructor was going to be clocking out. Very unorganized
;
Yes. It is the most unorganized and chaotic mess I have ever seen. nm
nm
Rude answer to a rude post. nm
nm
3 words, rude, rude, rude....sm

the owner sends out UGLY and NASTY emails to the MTs. The communication is just a disorganized mess and they hire you as an IC, but pretty much treats you like an employee.  Emdat sucks and pretty much the accounts are not that great.  VERY hard to get your lines in Emdat platform.  They LOVE to FIRE....when in actuality.....(that is the term they use)...you cannot FIRE an IC, you can lock them out of the system and I guess that is firing, but those two words have always been a pet peeve of mine....hearing when MTs are fired as ICs....Just my opinion

that my dear is what you call an unorganized MESS.sm
she did the same thing with a friend of mine....
As a whole.. nice people to work for, decent benefits but the get off/on the system, work/no work,
is maddening. I couldnt pay my bills or even work the schedule I was assigned. They would ask us not to work until work built up in the evenings and I specifically wanted to work days as I have kids etc. It just didnt work out for me but to each his own. It just seems there has to be a better balance in this business that what is happening.
For people at MDI-MD that say they are out of work, I see they are hiring now. Are people still
running out of work or did they get more accounts.  I am interested in this company.
Comments from last year said they were very unorganized and had payment issues. nm
