there are no 'magic' questions that you or a psychiatrist could legally ask that would indicate mental instability. A lot of work-at-home transcriptionists have the perfect job for them - not working with others. As demonstrated by the posts on this board day after day, many of these ladies really need some psychological help.
The ones you really need to worry about are the ones that could fool anybody and pass any type of psychological test. I worked as an administrator of a psychiatric practice for many years and have seen it over and over again. The issues only reveal themself when provoked,usually. A perfect example is disagreeing with someone. If you and I are looking at a paint swatch and I say "what a nice burgundy color" you may disagree and say "I think it's a nice shade of red" "Normal" people would think nothing of such an exchange and agree to disagree.
On the other hand, someone who is off kilter may say "what a nice burgundy color" and you may say "I think that's a nice shade of red" The off kilter person may say "are you calling me a liar" "are you saying I don't know my colors" This type of thing.
I hope that I'm making my point here. Sometimes, you just won't know until the "devil rears its ugly head" so to speak. The same goes in other parts of life, like dating. I'll bet that most of you have been involved with someone who you thought was just a dandy guy only to find out later that he was a nut.
All recruiters can do is hope for the best. As an employer, this is just one of those things that come with the territory. Just like employers who do background checks. Just because someone doesn't have a record doesn't mean that they haven't stolen or murdered in the past. It doesn't mean that they won't steal or murder in the future. You just have to hope that things work out.
