You're missing the whole point
The issue here is MONEY. They see an opportunity to make BIG BUCKS. They don't give a rat's behind about whose medical records are being transcribed by whom. Slave labor brings them BIG BUCKS. Look at the profit they're making. American clients (hospitals) will pay BIG BUCKS for the work being done by poor (I mean that in a monetary sense) Indian workers who are happy to make a few cents or is it rupees? Their standard of living is what keeps this whole thing going.
It's NOT about the medical records or the patients. It's about making American and Indian suits BIG MONEY.
I think you're missing the point.
Consider the case where 2 people apply for a job...one has been an MT for a whole year, all of it on the XXX platform. MT2 has been a Transcriptionist for 30 years...which means they've worked on selectric, wang, multimate, wp5.1, and a lot of the newer ones. A savvy company is going to hire MT2; the length of time in the field shows that they can adjust to whatever platform they're on and bring valuable experience.
To write a long-time MT off because they aren't familiar with your specific platform is shooting yourself in the foot, as those of us that have been doing this a while long long ago learned to adjust, and quickly, to whatever platform they put in front of us.
Whatever. You're missing my entire point.
Nobody could be faster, and I have zero errors - I also QA. I score 100% on any audits, and can churn out 400 lph if I choose. Trust me, 20 years into this, you aren't as eager to churn out 400 lph/8 hours day. There is a ceiling, and many of us have reached it. Have fun!
You're both missing the point. The companies
are breaking IRS laws when they do this. Employees are provided equipment; ICs provide their own. I know mechanics, and it works the same way with them. They may choose to own their own tools out of preference or so they can do work outside their employee job, but in an employee setting they are provided.
Glad you you don't "call off sick" but you're missing the point. This is a pay downgrad
Nm.
missing the point
Education is learned, reputation is earned. I don't want to own a company but I would love to work for one who treats me fair on a day to day, month to month, year to year basis. I thought this was somewhere I could come to get information I needed from other MTs who may have been in or might be in the same boat that I was rocking but depending on which company you are asking about you might find foes instead of friends. Its hard struggling with companies and supervisors who don't want to pay you a decent salary, who short your checks, who take away benefits and incentives, who take advantage of you if you demonstrate ability to do ESL doctors efficiently, and who have no work for you but post ads offering big sign on bonuses and we come here to ask opinions and get information and we get called liars and are told we are paranoid and that just aint right. These companies that we gripe about are not perfect companies and the majority of the time no one is griping about the exact same thing but when you have a group of peopled consisting of both current and past employees who have identical complaints about the same company then to me that constitutes a rotten apple in the bunch. Granted that apple might not be the actual company and that apple might not be you but there is a rotten apple somewhere in that bunch and eventually all will be able to see.
I think you are missing the point
On purpose? We object to jobs being sent offshore by (mega) and even not so mega corporations to save $$ - in order to maximize profits.
And *who* are you teaching by the way? What is the typical makeup of your classes?
Please correct the impression, if you can, that pay scales, benefits, etc., are only going to be further eroded by opportunities like this one...
You are missing the point...
An employee should not have to spend ANY money in order for a company to hire them. I don't care if the fax machines cost $2. This should not be the responsibility of the employee.
There are plenty of MT companies out there who are more professional and they overnight the paperwork and provide a similar means (at no cost to the employee) to mail the paperwork back.
If I received an offer from a company who expected me to print out and fax back to them my new hire work, I'd say nevermind.
Sorry, don't get your point! Am I missing
Missing the point
While I don't discount your experience, your math is way off there. First of all, I think starting wages for MT are too low (and the fact that starting wages are equal to the wages of experienced MTs doesn't help). I believe that, given the fact that when I started 12 years ago, I began at 8 cpl, with cost of living increases the starting wage for MT should be at least 9.5 cpl.
But there has to be a cap somewhere in terms of increase. For instance, my dad started as a nurse practitioner 25 years ago making $60K. He now makes $90K. That's as high as he will ever go. If he expected more than that, he'd never get a job. But, at the same time, he's very nicely compensated for his experience and knowledge.
Nonetheless, the question was what I think my worth is. That is what I believe, rationally and pragmatically, what my worth is. There's no right or wrong to it.
You are missing the point.
I did not say that feedback should not be sent the MTs. My point is that the MTSOs should compensate for the time taken to provide feedback if that is what they want. Being paid 3cpl to edit is not adequate pay for editing AND providing feedback, in my opinion.
You are missing the point altogether. nm

You are missing the point Patel, sm
we do NOT want to share our work with you.....the companies are doing this, NOT US, the MTs.
the meanies are missing the point
Rather than go in and answer each post, let me just reiterate THE POINT, which so many seem to be missing -- is that I was mainly talking about ATTITUDE, and giving the T a chance. This was my choice. Not because I feel guilty (!) about going forward with them, not because I am like a rape victim who thinks it is all my fault. I never sat in front of my machien without work. Maybe 2 days I didn't meet my whole line committment for lack of work. This was my choice ladies, and it was made with MUCH thought and consideration. My only guilt is about my less than professional attitude I carried for awhile, saying some things I was not proud of. Was simply sharing my opnion and the process I have been going through to get to this point. I am no spring chicken and have been doing this way longer than many of you. I would also like to say, its a dirty rotten shame that all these years after the liberation movement where women were supposed to be freed from guilt (and enlightened!) about their choices (ie, stay home with kids or go to work) etc, that we STILL attack one another mercilessly, with just different boundaries being disputed. I simply think that an attitude is 90% of the result sometimes. I am satisfied with my choice, given all the factors - and there are a lot of them - and will go forward with both eyes and ears open.
I guess my original point was that it's not all good for all MTs
I was thrilled when KS called me, and I had really high hopes, in large part based on what I read here in this forum. But my primary account dried up after the docs went to voice, and yet it's still my primary account -- with no work! There are two of us attached to this account, even though there isn't enough work for one part-timer. Lately I have been checking the account from 7:30 a.m. until 10 p.m., but there simply isn't anything to do. The docs are doing their own work. So why do we even have this account?
I too have a great relationship with my lead. We talk on the phone every day, we e-mail every day, she regularly requests additional accounts for me, but still the work doesn't come. It is truly a mystery, but based on some of the other comments on the boards, I'm not alone.
I've already had two backup accounts fizzle out, and I'm waiting to train on a third -- but I'm only to do overflow and won't have any regular work from the account.
That is great for you that your accounts are steady and reliable, and I would love to be in the same situation. I expected to be in that situation! I'm used to 1400-1600 lines per shift. I have had really good feedback from QA, so my work isn't an issue. All I am doing is asking for enough work. I thought that was why I was here. I can't wait for accounts they hope to get in a week, a month, two months. I have tried to give KS the benefit of the doubt, rationalizing that the accounts drying up is out of their control, but I need work and my family is counting on me to bring in a paycheck. I've been waiting for work for five months. Would you wait that long?
I think you're missing what I'm saying.
8 cpl as an INDEPENDENT CONTRACTOR is really low for an experienced MT. As an employee, it would be okay. There are plenty of companies who pay 8 cpl and above for employee status, so if you're experienced, you don't have to stoop to 8 as an IC. If you're happy with it, then more power to you! :)
You're not missing all that much. Not worth
being anxious over. I know they hire NJ MTs, so it must be a specific hospital account that won't let NJers in. They are often the middle man, or third party, or pain in the neck, between a hospital account and an MT. It sounded great on paper, but was not fun once working. Good luck.
You're not missing out on anything believe me. This person who represents
themselves as management as said she fired me because I did such crappy work, ....... I was NOT fired, I quit. I dealt only with the CEO of the company. This person doesn't know who I am and obviously has more than a few screws loose. When I turned in my notice the CEO offered me a management position and I could name my price. Now that doesn't sound like someone who does crappy work to me. I have since been offered a position 2 times since I left.
I would not recommend SS to my worst enemy.
Sorry....nm after that post is missing. NM

Took what I thought was an easy test but no response. Sounds like we're not missing much though.
I agree with the other poster. Where are all the decent companies at?
You're reading too much into it. sm
I have been one of the people on the account you are talking about. They dictate 1400-1500 lines per day before 5 p.m. and then sometimes later, which is what we will cover.
As for the person that has 4 PT'ers. Email me and I will help. I am a lead on 3 rad accounts and we are working on making the schedules all full time with part-timers just filling the spots that are left over from full-timers. There are VERY few KS rad accounts that only have 2 radiologists; most have 10+, some even 30+. If it is overstaffed, it is because someone was not doing what they were supposed to and they added extra people. It probably just stayed that way without anyone realizing. If no one says anything, we cannot fix the issue.
My original post
I apologize for stirring up a hornet's nest however, I see soo many people complaining on here about the fact that they only want to work certain hours, they don't want to work weekends, and so on that it angers me. Yes, I work weekends, but that is because of the fact that my s/o works on the weekends, so generally I take a day off during the week, that way, I can run my errands. I am an employee for a company, however, I really don't have set hours, nor do I work a straight 8 hour day -- I generally work more, because like all of us, I have bills to pay as well and know approximately what I have to make to be able to have a roof over my head and food on the table. I am my sole support and live in an area with a relatively high cost of living as well. I was making great money up until a couple of years ago, but things happened and I have had to take a job at a lower rate of pay, but at least it is a job. The key here is being flexible in your hours. If there is no work available, then maybe there will be in a few hours and you have to explain to friends and family that this is how it works. Luckily for me, I found a great fit with a company, its only one account, one hospital and I have never run out of work.
In my original post about this, I wanted to say sm
edict rather than law, but figured I'd get jumped on using that word. One of the late-night talk-show hosts referred to it as a law when one of the guests was baiting him to say, Merry Christmas.
The point is, you knew exactly what I meant in the first place. Oh well. Glad I gave No Name a LOL! Laughing is healthy.
Yes, the original post that started this all was by DK.

Maybe you should reread the original post. sm
OP thinks no response required when you apply for a job.
Re: The flame by my original post
Folks I'm sorry someone considers my post a flame. That was not my intention, but then again I have never been treated worse by an employer in my whole professional life. That's why I'm looking forward to working for a company without local roots and the small town, small-minded mindset it brings.

I see certain people on this board, who post under the same names and I can take a 1 hour break, a 2 hour break or a 3 hour break and they seem to be whining and complaining about life -- yet they can get new puppies, new kitties, new other animals but BOTTOM line -- oh gee no work guess what people -- I have to swtich back and forth between 2 accounts on my MAIN account and 2 accounts on my secondary -- I literally work till I dropand thank heavens, I am in a relationship where my significant other understands -- yes, we ALL have to deal with being on hold with India, but that is where you take a day, to pay the bills, vent with customer service reps, etc and move forward -- and like I told my other half -- bill dosent get paid its YOUR responsibility - a relationship, whether it be marriage or othewise takes 2 people.
And as I mentioned before, TAKE THE time to learn online resources as well -- for example, if you hear Kem-7 THINK Chemistry-7 -- learn punctuation, grammar and most of all spelling and --sorry been working from 7 am to 11 pm -- with VERY few breaks -- might help in the long run
By the way, I nearly forgot this original post, as
I got so absorbed in reading the GREAT posts below. I am now so proud to say that I have just done what you suggested, and am now joyfully employed with one of the three companies you listed - go US MTs! I left the company-who-shall-not-be named due to these issues, and feel I have at least tried to do something. Its a good feeling, too, for a change.
The ORIGINAL post ONLY intent was
to help protect fellow MTs from working for this schister of a MTSO. THAT IS ALL.
No more information needed in so far as what steps we are taking to secure payment, except that we will prevail. I GUARANTEE YOU THAT.
think you need to read the original post again. NM
,
your original post about is it fair sm
to have these horrid dictators for the test. Back to the question......YES IT IS. That is probably a sample of what this company does. You took the test, you didn't like it because the dictation was bad, so move on! Yes this profession has come down to lines and cpl etc etc and its a darn shame. If you don't want the crap don't work for a company that has crap dictators. I don't know where you are going to find that though. All companies have accounts with bad dictators. you are bound to get some of them. Doing them all day long, no I wouldn't want to either. That is why they tested this way because that is probably the account. Believe it or not, there are folks who have an ability to decipher these dictators (I don't want it either). It has changed old MTs like me who have been in this business for 35 years.
Bad dictators have always been part of the profession, its a part of medicine! You don't have to do it, you tested, you didn't like it...GREAT move on
Um, I think you need to read the original post. sm
It really might be a good idea to read a post before ASSUMING that you know what it is about and spouting off at the mouth. I'm embarrassed for you.
original post was dated 8/12 --sm
and is stuck between *has Spheris moved* and WMX post. It had 90 something views.
No, no one answered her original post.
She then came back and posted a very rude post in which we responded rudely back. Maybe if she had kindly come back and asked why no one responded to her post she would have gotten nicer answers. The fact is, I did read the initial post and did not respond to it as it would have taken way too long to go into detail everything that being an IC entails. If she had been more specific with what she wanted to know, I more than likely would have responded to the original post.
HOW do read my original post
and come away thinking I was equating 'wearing clothes from WalMart - to - creating medical records with gross errors?'
Seriously, how? If you still do after re-reading it, then you just didn't get my meaning.
Please re-read the original post.
There was no question as to whether someone had to work it or not. The question was to why there should be incentive pay to go along with working those hours.
Your rant, while posted in this thread, actually does nothing to address it, but rather seems to have provided you a place to vent....why so blue, Boo? Did you have to work the weekend?
Follow up to my original post
I worked for a company where it was a combination of VR and straight typing -- I never knew what the next report was going to bring and at the same time, started working for a company that does straight transcription. I am not adverse to VR, if that is all that is done; however, these companies have started the thing of paying one rate for straight typing and another for VR -- that's where it is very frustrating as I am sure it is to many of you. I know the goals that I have to set for myself in order to keep a roof over my head, pay my utilities and keep food on the table and if it means putting 12-15 hours a day in, then I do it, knowing what my priorities are. For those of you that are fortunate enough to have a spouse who also brings in an income, that is all well and good, but many of us are single and have to do what we can to survive. My rent alone is close to $800 a month, then I have cable and electric on top of it to pay, and right now, I have very little food in the fridge but I am managing to get by.
This is what you said in your original post RESPECT..sm

JLG IS DISHONEST

I just completed an interview process with JLG. The owner presents herself as an MT who understands our situations. But they are very dishonest. Do not trust them. They are liars. I just wish I could find some honesty in this business. I have been in it for 20 years. It used to be a professional career with integrity, but not anymore. The disadvantage of working over the internet is that companies do not see you as a person, but as a computer, or a typist. They don't have to look into our eyes when they lie. They just really don't care. Thanks for listening.
Jo..I e-mailed you a response about your original post....(nm)
mmmm
not offensive - the original post WAS racist......
I lost the original post, but found it again sm
Please email me too with your experiences if you cannot post on the board. I really am interested in anything you have to share on this journey!

I hope you saw my original answer to this post
over on the main board before they moved your post and thus dropped my reply....
$48 for the medical, $10 for the dental, and I don't know how much for the vision because I didn't opt in for it this year. That's per paycheck, do double that to get the monthly fee. I did opt for the higher-deductible medical; the lower-deductible premium share was about twice as much.
Let me just add to my own post, on re-reading it.
Mind you, I spent many, many nights - as I work graveyard shift - usually with a baby nearby - sobbing my eyes out over the injustice of it. I had to work for the most unfair MTSOs ever on the face of the earth! But I still stuck it out - wouldn't give them the satisfaction of knowing I cared. Because they DO know they are doing it to the unfavorite MTs - its part of the big game - like being in a popular clique in school. But down the pike, so to speak, I am so glad I stuck it out because I can literally type anything and hear any dialect or accent - ANYTHING. I can hear the King of Garbage perfectly and fly thru it! So, yes, it was a horrible painful experience, and my heart goes out to you.

I have been on three contracts at 3 different hospitals who put VR in their Radiology Depts. I have to say I agree with you that it is much more than babysitting to get those reports out accurately and in a timely manner. It is easy to think you are just reading along, which in some ways you are, but you also have to be thinking along with the reading. Just as if you are transcribing it you have to know what the terminology means, when something does not sound/cannot possibly be right. Then you have to figure out why the VR threw the lean mean machine in the middle of the report. LOL....Some of the stuff I have seen in the reports could rival the best stand-up comics. VR babysitting is not for everyone, if you have a tendency to fall asleep easily, it is probably not for you. If you have a tendency to not have a sense of humor, it is probably not for you. If you have a tendency to get upset at stupid stuff, it is probably not for you. I agree it is light years away from replacing accurate transcription. Just my humble experience at three different hospitals.
Reading thru your post it might be
the person who died had other issues going on besides just the CABG supposedly needed. If other medical issues, those could have played a part in his not receiving the bypass.
In reading this post.. sm
Do you really think that MDI was sold based on the idea that all the MTs would stay? MDI was sold based on the lines per year/money/clients it has and/or generates. The buyer couldn't care less if the MTs stay or go. What the buyer is interested in is the customers. You are right that Transcend will have to hire new MTs if a lot of you don't go with them, but probably at less money than what you all are currently making.
Goodness...read the original post again..you are way off the mark.
Sounds like you have the problem.....and are very willing to attack, gut and spit out.
Of course I could be wrong.
