TravelinMT: I say, go for it. sm
I have been trying to spread the word to anyone that I come in contact with about the fact that their medical records are going overseas. They are absolutely shocked and appalled. No one that I have told this to is aware that this is going on. So maybe if enough people find out about this, there may be a big enough outcry to make a change!! Let us know how you fare!! Good luck!!
Hi TravelinMT
I just wanted to mention that no discussion about offshoring is complete without looking at the full picture of how it affects outsourcing within the borders, what with companies having to lower rates in order to be competitive and with the fact that the time difference enables many offshore workers to be working bankers hours and still meet the ever more strict TATs, while U.S. workers must work through the night to provide the same TATs.
I think it is also important to include information about the many companies who now want employees, yet advertise that they are seeking ICs and then treat them as employees. I have copies of two ads from within the last two weeks, one of them demanding the IC be available from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Friday, with also needing occasional Saturday coverage, yet only offering 5-7 cpl to provide this, and stating also that you must work when they need you, not just when you want to work. Sounds like an employee situation to me, but they do not want to pay hourly for you to be available for this rigorous schedule, and what they do want to pay is more in line with what offshore transcriptionists are earning. The other ad requires, Must be able to provide service Monday-Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM. Weekend work available. Again, they appear to be looking for an employee, yet their ad clearly states, Employee Type: Independent Contractor and lists it to be a full time position.
If you would like copies of these ads, please e-mail me. I will try to offer more help if I can come up with anything else, but I do believe that this type of ABUSE is a direct result of offshoring. From what I have read from others on this board in my 10 years as a medical Transcriptionist indicates that when employees first went home to work, they were, in fact, still treated as employees and paid a decent wage (either hourly or by the line with incentive, full benefits, worked the shift they were required and only worked OT on request and with the usual time and a half etc.), and that the stuff hit the fan after outsourcing and then offshoring became a reality. I have not personally experienced a drop in pay due to this, but have had to accept lower wages and employee terms as an IC as a result of what is happening in our industry.
Lastly, thank you for standing up for all of us and our profession. I truly hope this is the beginning of BIG change!
