In other words, the legal and true definition of an IC is independent contractor.  We are not employees in any way.  Technically, MTSOs who want ICs are not allowed to ask for a set schedule as far as hours worked in a day, like 12 til 7 pm, for instance.  The only thing required for an IC and MTSO relationship is the MT stating what days they are available and what amount of work they will produce.  Then in the proper setting, work is assigned to the MT, to be completed on an agreed upon time.  Basically, the only advanced to being an IC is your independence in when you transcribe. You get no benefits from the MTSO, you use all your own equipment, etc. What has happened over the years is that MTs agree to be ICs, not understanding their role at all, and then they agree to working set schedules right down to the minute, etc.  They are employees, and lose that freedom of a window of time in which to transcribe at their discretion. The MTSO gets all the benefits. They get a person who is foolish enough to commit as if an employee, yet the MTSO doesn't have to pay a single penny in taxes or benefits for these employees. It is illegal to do so, by requiring set hours, etc, and the IRS and the MTSOs know it. However, if the MTs are ignorant of the law, they submit to these rules and think all is fine. However, the more MTs are doing this, and it is happening more and more of late because its been a long time since the IRS hit our industry over this issue, the more MTSOs are demanding ICs to work set schedules, etc, thus ruining the very definition of what an IC is. The more MTs who say YES to losing their freedom is impacting the other ICs who lawfully and rightfully want to be true IC status. So, yes, behavior of others who are ignorant of IC status takes away the true IC jobs from those who want it.  Just the same as MTs with years and years of experience who accept meager line rates. If all MTs are happy to accept 7 cpl after 20 years in the industry, this makes the average pay rate drop for all of us. Yes, there are those of us who know 7 cpl is an insult, and we stick it out and find the MTSOs willing to pay us our worth. But the thousands of MTs who are seemingly so eager to sell themselves short and take poverty wages do have a negative impact for all of us, newbies and oldtimers alike.  I hope you can understand this now.
