So maybe she did get evicted

When a person is on the verge of losing everything, sometime their ability to communicate goes by the wayside. If she got evicted, or had her power/phone/internet connection discontinued for nonpayment, she may have no way to check her email and is dealing with immediate survival issues like where to go with her kids. They could even be in a shelter or living in their car. Its hard to stay in the communication loop when things hit rock bottom. I've been there, I know. I ended up staying with some friends (unfortunately, alcoholics) that had no computer and were very bad at relaying messages. I would go use their neighbor's computer when I could and try to apply for work. Often by the time I was allowed to use it again, job offers had come and gone, and messages to call prospective employers back were forgotten until the job had been filled. It drove me crazy, but eventually I got out of there. When you lose control of your life, sometimes the help you receive is counterproductive to the big picture, but vital for immediate needs.
