Kept a log with MQ for years then finally just stopped with DQS after I felt comfortable it wasn't cheating me. Now with new company and they want you to log everything. I feel like it is taking up a bunch of time, but... sounds like I better continue.

But now I see others think it's ridiculous as well. You should have seen their snotty email to me. We require a minimum of 3 years current hospital MT experience for consideration of an at-home position. Thank you for your interest. That's it, nothing else. Why in the heck didn't they just say that to begin with? I never would have bothered taking the darn thing! Plus, there are those out there with 20 years of experience who can't pass that rotten test. Then, too, there are companies who don't even respond at all. So I guess I should consider myself lucky that Mr. Snot responded at all.

Well if it was soooo horrible...
Why didn't they say that?? I only received three or four corrections on it and this was on an ESL speaking doctor, so for a first-time run at it I don't see that as horrible. I type for a large 300-bed acute care hospital and also do IC work for a brain and spine trauma center and my QA is 98%++. As far as this being a test, this was an actual report that was pulled off the system to type. This was not something dictated from a year ago, it was just dictated. When I applied to them there was no testing, no phone interviews or anything. Basically, I received an email stating they could use me on this account and then I was set up. From where I come from you train your people so that there is no confusion on how a typed report should look since essentially they are a legal document and everything needs to be in order. You can say all you want, but I think this company lacks PR and to me that is as important as how much a company will pay. I'll just keep my own accounts and be happy. I don't have any complaints from them, only happy referrals to other offices.

If I were making this posting, I would be asking if anybody knew who made a 'clicky' keyboard, because to my ear, they're all too quiet. I need to be able to 'hear' what my fingers are doing, which may make sense to some of the people on here. I don't know if it's some kind of subconscious thing or what, like instantaneous letter counting or something, but I can almost 'hear' a typo and God only knows what I would be typing if I didn't get that immediate feedback. I just turn up my volume and, if it's really tough, type really gently through the bad section (and hopefully it's just a sentence or so).

But in answer to your question, it seems to me that a lot of the black Microsoft keyboards are pretty darn quiet, both the straight and ergonomic ones.

I know that at least 20 or so people quit around the same time I did! Even though it is super annoying, it is sometimes funny to read their e-mails when they are panicking because they don't have enough people.

and it makes me angry too. I have done this since 1980 and never had a raise. As a matter of fact, I used to make more!! Everybody wants to do medical transcription and I get asked about it all the time. I tell them NOOOOOO, you do NOT want to do this. The ads out there make it sound like you can make so much money, and while as a good Transcriptionist you CAN make better than average money, it never goes past that point. Working at home is not all it is cracked up to be. I only did it because I wanted to be home with my kids. Now I am sorry to be stuck in this rut.

I was sooo afraid of using shortcuts, I watched the screen like a hawk and typed everything verbatim and screwed myself out of so much money! I wondered what the secret was to all those MTs who would chat up a storm, and till make a higher line count than me, and they had less experience....They used their shortcuts/expanders for everything, and once I learned this and worked on mine, my line count zoomed and I consistently made high incentive pay and bonus....don't underestimate this tool. Thanks for bringing this up, Linda!

Report feedback very prompt and helpful, not demeaning in any way. Did the required number of reports to be monitored, got above the 98% and then received congratulation E-mails for doing so from my mentor and STM.
Good manners and friendly attitude are a BIG part of the company. If this person was truly rude or unhelpful, please let HR and/or your assigned STM know.

a company in your country. The companies I know of don't hire MTs out of the country. I don't want to be rude, but just for some information, I wouldn't describe what I wanted as wanting to do reports in my spare time. Very unprofessional.

Please, they will not tell you anything, ever. Management changes on a daily basis, the MTs are told nothing. They will ship the work off one day, take it back, then ship it off again at their discretion. There are many GOOD companies out there, don't waste your time and talent on this place. It is apparent that their goal is to replace all American MT's with offshore, it is just a matter of time. They will treat you miserably if you decide to go there.

How to find?
I have called both the tax and the labor departments in my state and they know of no such regulations.
The way to find out might be to - sm
either have some investigative type get a job at that company's management level.
Sometimes even some hospital medical records management folks actually know where their records are REALLY being typed.
Where I used to work inhouse, that institution has a strict 'No offshoring' policy. They contract only with MTSOs who supposedly do not offshore. Yet some of it IS going offshore, and that hospital MR manager knows it, but the rest of the hospital doesn't. She & the MTSO have some sort of a sweetheart deal going, and she thinks she'll never be found out. Attempts to 'out' her secret by MTs have failed because (1) MTs are never taken seriously there, (2) she's such an adept liar that she always twists things around to come out in her favor, and (c) most of the whistle-blowers in the MT department there have either been fired or driven out.
There's such a wall between MTs & management that it's hard for the truth to be known. I think that's another reason why unionization could help us, because they've got the wherewithall to investigate issues such as cheating MTs on line counts, sending work offshore through the 'back door', etc.
If ever MTs needed someone to unite them and stand up for their cause, it's now.

Why is it that answers to peoples' questions about companies are not showing up??? Are they being removed? I thought this board was to help people find the company that is right for them. I am not getting any replies to questions I have posed. What are they hiding? Makes me feel like this has become a shady business to be in after 20 years.

IMO...you won't find one with the best of everything.
Choose what's important and then look for ones that'll be a good fit. There is no specific answer. There aren't even a specific number of answers. Different for everyone.

I will help in any way I can. I live in Nebraska and there are only 2 or 3 MT companies in this state. It is time to see people lined up outside MQ and all the other places that outsource. It is time for American MTs to have a union. It is time for us to get together and do something about this. I know it feel like we are all alone in this and we are all suffering alone.......but that isn't true. I have read many posts on these boards as well and there are many many intelligent people here. I am sure we can come up with a game plan. We can't lie down and let them stomp on us.

Perhaps if you find your own account you could ask that line rate, but offhand, I don't know of any nationals that would start you off at that rate. I can tell you that I was shocked and disappointed when I realized I wouldn't be paid for my experience as I was when I worked in-house. Good luck in your search.
You can probably find better
I started out at Spheris (then Edix) 5 years ago and it's been fine. However, they are moving to voice rec which I believe pays 5.5 cents an hour, something like that. I haven't noticed my productivity increase much so hence my salary has decreased. I will probably look for something else soon. Other than the recently lowered salary I have been satisfied with the company.
From what I can find, they are not the same
company at all. One is called DTS America and the other is Digital Transcription Systems, Inc. in Oklahoma.
If you find don't like it
within3 months, that would be long enough. I couldn't make any real money with it, even with putting in extra hours. The stress is what did me in.
find something else
I worked for them for a long time, even before the name changed. They outsource all they can and a recent memo said they were shooting for having all offshore because of the cost savings. They got rid of most of the QA people, just all of a sudden said sorry, no job. The people kept in charge would aggravate you to death, you'd be in one working and one would call you to work on another, and yet another would call about something different. You spend more time fielding calls and IMs than working. The only thing I miss is their insurance, it was expensive but paid nearly everything.
You probably will not find what you are sm
