I am a single mother whose child was in day care from age 20 months until kindergarten. She is turning out a lot better than most of the kids in her school. She is a teenager now and does not drink, she is an honor student. Come on now.... it depends on each individual case. You cannot make a blanket statement like you just did. That is ignorant.
Working is actually a good example for your children.

Wow. Your kids are probably glad they don't have to stay home with you all day.
Why are you so grumpy? She got on the board to share the precious moments that she was having with her kids, and you jump all over her! Why do people have to be so miserable, and always find the negative in everything?
I wanted to stay home with the two kids...sm
and this seemed like a good fit. I love my job some days better than others, but I think all jobs are like that at some point in time. My husband is in the US Navy so what better reason to get a job that allows me to be at home, especially when he is gone for months at a time.
What is your problem with moms working from home?
It sounds like you have some kind of bias against moms working from home! What is wrong with that? Just because an MT is a mom working from home does not automatically qualify her as someone who puts out crappy work. I am sure there are tons of moms on this board who put out quality work. I put out quality work now and once my baby comes I will still put out quality work. Quit bashing moms working from home.
I have 3 kids at home with me...
I have had my 7-year-old, 6-year-old, and 8-month-old home with me all summer and I've been okay. Luckily, I work as an IC and the lady I work for is VERY flexible. I take family time during the day if I need it, but mostly it works out okay. It'll be better when the kids go back to school, but I'll still have the baby home. I wouldn't recommend working as an employee where you have to sit at the computer for a set schedule of time, though.
I have two small kids at home
Mine are 6 and 3, and I have worked at home for something like 9 years, so they have had the benefit of mom being home their whole lives.
Granted, my oldest started 1st grade this past week, but the little one is home all day.
My oldest also has a disability, with ADHD and a sensory processing disorder, and when he gets upset the whole world knows it.
I do work as an employee, both with a full time job and a part time job. The full time is third shift, by my choice, because it is easier on one hand and because it is more money on the other.
My part time, though, is the middle of the afternoon, again set schedule. I manage the best I can because I know it is what is best for my children in the long run.
I am lucky enough to have a wonderful man in my life who helps as much as he can, but he is not their father and is not comfortable being left alone with my daughter (3) for too long at a clip...She just started living with us in June after living with her dad for a year, and so he is not sure about the rules with little girls yet.
My youngest had decided to be cute last year...She took my old keyboard, footpedal, and headphones, and set them up the floor next to my desk, where she proceeded to work like mommy
I set timers. I will work for 30 minutes or an hour...then take a break. With my full time job, i have a set schedule, but a 12-hour window to do 8 hours of work, so it is set but with a little flexibility.
My part time is a little stiffer, but it is all a mattet of balance and I feel i do okay.
Same theme, staying at home with the kids
This is just the most idiotic thing to write. I joined up with this profession before mothers only went into it so they could wear PJs and stay at home with Jr. That is a sorry reason to go into this job in the first place. I don’t find my job grueling, never have. Apparently you must be in the wrong place because your spouting off is wrongly placed. Discrimination against women and children. Please spare me from this. I am going to throw up in a minute.
Hmm....working on the holidays, PMS, kids home from school, wanting to find a better job but can'

My advice to you: Stay home, you are not..sm
made out to live in any other country, except the United States of America.
God bless!
i agree ...stay home a little longer if u can financially
i wouldnt trade the time i've had at home for anything
A lot of MTs are single moms, or the
only breadwinner in the house. How do these people pay their rent? These are the people who are really suffering. All the way around its a lack of respect for this profession and the companies are screwing us royally. It takes a great amount of skill, many years of learning and the ability to sit in front of a screen for long hours. The way things are rigged now, you can't even afford to take a damn break for fear of getting the electricity cut off.
No problems with moms here.
If the only reason you are an MT is because you wanted to stay at home with your kids, then it's probably the wrong reason to be an MT.
I was lucky enough to be at home with my kids but I was an MT before I had kids. When they were between the ages of 18 months and about 4, I had to juggle my schedule around because there was no way I could watch kids and work at the same time. I'm sure that's what most MT moms have to do.
There are single Moms in every profession.
You can't expect to work for a company holding the cards, and them pay you all of what they make when you want to be at home and it is not your account. It belongs to the company paying you. There's always the pavement to pound if you think you deserve the big bucks. Can't have it both ways. I don't think anything is just handed to anyone. If the electric is going to be turned off, then there are programs out there to help. I think if you fall within a certain salary range, you would qualify for assistance especially being a single Mom or Dad.
Any single moms working as an IC? sm
Any thoughts on this. I used to work from home for the local hospital. I was an employee paid hourly with benefits. Last year, they decided to outsource everything and Ive been left jumping from company to company trying to make ends meet and failing. It seems the nationals all to often have little or no work available on a pretty frequent basis and as such, I can't afford or qualify for benefits. So just wondering if other single moms have just opted for IC status and work for several companies to make ends meet?
Some of us are single moms too. Missing
Doesn't make for putting bread on the table... feeling very irresponsible for staying at TT so long, when I have a kid to care for.. just waiting til the new job kicks in... and hoping the same situation does not happen again!
MT, minimum wage, single moms, etc...sm
Medical transcription requires a great deal of skill and knowledge. It is not a minimum wage job, or should not be a minimum wage position. Years of learning and experience are involved to master this profession. No qualified MT, single mom or otherwise, should be working at minimum wage levels, in turn necessitating the help of assistance programs. This is too skilled a profession, and it is a shame that it is not so slowly sinking to the level of a minimum wage-type job.
In the early days, MedQuist said working at home was a benefit, therefore at-home sm
employees did not receive as many benefits as those working in-house. As I believe, it was something like at-home employees got 3 days off a year versus 10 days for the in-office employees -- WHAT?!!! I told them it made no sense to me, since by working at home I was saving them money -- no need to provide office space, equipment, references, utilities, etc. -- yet I get shafted. I was only part-time when they took over the previous company with their great policies, and I told them to kiss where I can't.
Man did I get screwed!
I worked for one of the transcription giants for 6 years and left there making $12.61/hr and that was after a raise after nearly 4 years of begging for more $$$
To screwed over
What was the drug? Have you brought this to anyone's attention at your company?
SS also screwed me..
I have 10+ years experience as MT, worked almost 6 years with SS, 3 of them being QA. I felt like I was probably targeted due to my pay rate. I couldn't make the line count as FT, so I changed to PT status, but still worked 40 hours, just couldn't make the 40-hour line count. They hired a bad bach of MTs and expected us to basically re-type reports. Anyway, just letting you know I feel your pain.. and I feel totally screwed by SS. A company I once felt was the best company ever, and I was so loyal to.
right now plenty of work, also plenty of ESLs.nm
nm
Plenty of BOTH on my end, I do traditional have plenty of work, always
nm
Are we going to get screwed if we are MT/ME? I wind up
doing about half transcription and half ASR, so I might have 800 lines of each. I wouldn't get 1200 transcription lines done because of the ASR work, wonder if that will screw me out of a bonus all the way around or if they have some other complicated formula figured out for that scenario?
Do not go to PMT Kentucky. They are all screwed up.
nm
LOL well I screwed up that sentence but you know what I mean nm
xx
Sounds like you are being screwed.
How is she holding your count? Are you getting paid?
sick of being screwed
I feel the same exact way and with all the continuing education and experience our profession requires it is completely unfair.
May be the same company I used to work for, and they screwed a lot of us over. sm
My old company is hiring again, I see. They gave us this same crap story of why they were going to production, and pretty much everyone on this board heard it then. But what they didn't mention was that line counts weren't being met because they had us on 5 different accounts, training other editors and practically jumping thru hoops. If this is the company you're thinking of joining Kat, then run fast.
Dang. I take it you were screwed by Focus?

don't yell, I know I screwed up....too early..lol..nm

I worked for Monrovia (poster below who got screwed)
Don't know anything about Santa Ana, but stay away from Monrovia.
They were an awful fit for me. And their DQS software screwed up my harddrive. nm

Yeah I was hired by Wedmedx but I screwed up.
They had even sent me the equipment. I was so excited..it was an ortho position and then I have family medical issues and just one thing after another. There was a misunderstanding. I guess I was supposed to get ahold of them with my new start date and I was waiting for them to contact me once I got all of final paperwork in etc. In any event, when I got ahold of them, they said I was supposed to have followed up by now and wouldnt give me a chance. I was so bummed. I havent found a decent place to call home since then. This was like 2-3 months ago. Good luck to you. The insurance was the main reason I was going to go there too.
Thanks. I think it would hurt even more to be screwed by someone I considered a friend. sm
I had that happen a long time ago. Fortunately, at the time I didn't need the money. She had called me and was panicked because she was snowed under and wouldn't be able to make TAT. I worked myself to death all weekend long, but when it came to pay me, there was one excuse after another, and finally she gave me a check ... and it bounced.
On a happier note, or at least I hope it turns out happy, I wrote to the woman in Virginia again and she finally answered me saying that she had taken care of it and not to bother her again as she had clients to take care of ... whatever. Maybe this time the old squeaky wheel theory works.
I am sure that not all people without direct deposit are cheats, and I am glad you have found someone you can rely on. It will just take awhile to get this bad taste out of my mouth and learn to trust again.
I can't afford to stay with VR. If they paid more, I'd stay.
The situation sucks. I really liked this company when I started there. I know they read these forums, and they are aware that we are unhappy over VR line rates. They stroke us with cute emails and say we're the best, but I can't feed my family on praise. They're turning into another MedQuist, and so I'll be leaving.
Short on hours - screwed on holiday pay. My fault (sm)
I didn't educate myself better on how to qualify for holiday bonus. If i had known I would have butted in (outside my scheduled shift) and picked up those hours to make sure I did qualify.
I saw a memo stating no more PTO for Xmas and reminded us about the total hours for holiday pay.
If more and more of us pick up that extra 5 hours a week to be FT what the heck is going to happen.
Happy with the company overall, just grumping cause I feel like I got cheated out of the holiday pay. New employees should have been reminded IMHO.
I guess if I got screwed out of my paycheck or got lied to by an employer I'd have a rotten att
This board is a great way to find out about an unsavory company before those things happen to you. If you think warning people about scheisters, liars, bottom feeders, and rip-off artists is amusing, time to double up on your meds, sweetheart.
SD apparently screwed up by hitting "reply all" to an email that was meant
Indians they were using as outsourcers. She accidentally let the cat out of the bag when OSi was denying all along that they used Indian MT's. I'm sure her "stepping down" was more of a "quit or you're fired" thing, but that's just my take on it. She was a b*tch, that's for sure, and an incompetant unqualified one at that. QA manager - what a joke.
Merit is what is screwed up. As usual. New managers couldn't care less.

7 KIDS
If she works 16 hours a day 7 days a week and has 7 kids that means she never sleeps. No wonder she is a b**ch but how did she weasel her way to the top. Does OSi hire anybody off the street!
kids
That is just like when my kids want something and I tell them they have to wait, that I don't have the $ right now. Their reply is, Can't you just go to the bank and get more?! lol! I guess that is the beauty of being a kid! Stress-free living w/o a care in the world! We all enjoyed this at one time or another!
All I know is for me and my kids about
2 years ago it was $900+ a month. I found my own.
Just because someone wants PT and has kids does
not mean that their work is an afterthought. It just means we work harder at everything we do.
Stay low and stay very, very quiet. Do not
ask questions, do not talk to the supervisors unless forced to. The answer will always be the same, that you are the only one who has an issue, everything else is perfect. Never mention anyone's name. This place has the mentality of the Borg, everyone has been assimilated, which means if your supervisor does not like you, or does not like your friend, you have no chance. You associate with so and so, so you are exactly like them. That quickly goes through the Borg network and every team lead, ROM, and person in management, including HR, is aware of it. You'll be labeled a trouble maker and your life will not be worth living. Any trial to clear your name will be done in the fashion of the trial of witches. You are in a dunking chair - if you drown you are innocent but it is too late by then.
Remember, a ROM never makes a mistake and never tells something that isn't true. They are perfect (and nastier than a pack of hiennas.)
If you run out of work, it is your fault. You are just lazy. Can't make enough to take care of your family? Too bad, you need to work harder.
And forget getting an answer from management. It doesn't
happen. So, as before, stay low and very quiet.
And do a good job? You can be assured that if you do a good job, do what you are supposed to do, and stay quiet, no one will even recognize your name. They have no idea where you work, what your schedule is, or that you even belong to Transcend.
Its better than having to read what her kids are
doing or where they have to go today or this week or next month. Tired of hearing about supervisors' kids and their problems!!
the best one are the ones with kids in kindergarten
and you are treated like you are in the same age bracket as their horrible little monsters.
My feeling - This is a job. You have to learn to separate work from home, no matter where you work, and make your priorities. If raising kids are your priorities, then you do not belong in management. I hate talking to a supervisor who has a screaming ninny standing next to her so you can't hear a word that is being said or interrupting every 2 seconds so the conversations are not coherent.
screaming kids
Screaming kids, screaming docs. Is there really a difference?
Once the kids are bigger sm
I'm going into EMS. I'm an EMT now and going to go to paramedic school. Each and every day you get a chance to make a difference in someone's life doing that. I've wanted to be a paramedic since I first watched Emergency! years ago on TV, and once my children are all in school, I'm going to do it!
I think that if she has kids she would need the money.
I am home for the kids, that is why I chose this career many years ago. However, the kids are well aware how important it is for mommy to work. I am happy to have this job for example yesterday my 8 year old son was home sick from school. But I still worked the usual hours. He was here and read and did projects and rested. But he knew although he was disappointed that I take my breaks to watch after him, but I work too. Same with going to the park in the afternoon. Sometimes the kids go with daddy and mom has to stay home and work.
Years ago I realized though, I had to work different shifts since the children are here in the afternoon. It took a while to work through it, but I never took time off. I had to adjust my schedule to split, and when my husband was able to take over the benefits I became an IC. Perhaps your friend can have a chat with her employee and mention that perhaps she'd like to change the schedule to split, or to different days or go part time. If she is an IC, then she should be able to change her line commitment. Either way, a talk with the woman to find out what is going on is better than firing, because she may not know or appreciate how important she is to your team. Perhaps if you let her know that you need her talent to be on as part of the team, she will understand and adjust her schedule accordingly. I had wished my hospital supervisor had put me part-time instead of my just out and out leaving, because it has taken me 2 years to find the right fit. So, maybe your friend should think out what to say. But say it soon, so there are no misunderstandings. Sorry it is such a long post. I hope it helped, though.
I don't have little kids, so that may be the difference, but (sm)
I actually love working one weekend day and having one weekday off, i use it to catch up on chores while I have the house to myself, and have time to deal with any businesses that aren't open on weekends. But I know not everyone would feel the same way - hope you're able to find what works for you!
Help! I'm a part-time SE because I have little kids
here at home. I can't imagine trying to stay within a certain schedule. It just sounds absolutely horrible. Is there anything in this new packet for me or am I basically SCREWED?
our kids will have to learns skills such as
even lawyers are offshored now
we will never change... the big guys like congress and bush are messing up our lives... combine offshoring with the influx of illegals doing the hands on jobs and middle america is history, as we knew it, never to be the same. It could have been prevented...other countries doe it, but we are at the mercy of the big guys. I have a feeling if we were at the mercy of the big GIRLS such as hillary and other women, we would be in better shape. Men are motivated by small heads and testosterone.
