The key to any good line count is a superb glossary. That is how you make your money, no matter what the line rate is. If your line rate is 10 cpl but there is no work, are you really making a good rate? Just my 2 cents worth. I am very happy with this move I made, and the more I build up my glossary, the less time it takes to get the lines in. Sweat shop? Not really.

I'm a bit perplexed too -- you think YOURS is a sm

positive post?  You make sweeping generalizations about people you know nothing about.  I have been an MT for over 30 years, and yes, I am blessed to have found my niche with a great company.  But there ARE a lot of not-so-great companies out there, and without the networking here, how are people to know before they invest their time and sometimes money?  Granted, sometimes the posts are just sour grapes, but when you see 10 people or so posting that they are fighting to get back pay or whatever from a company, it is hard to discredit it with a mere dismissal of that company didn't fit for them or such.

I am glad that you have a good company and positive people to network with.  I am blessed too in that I joined an email support group several years ago, and we cry during the bad times each of us have as well as put on the party hats to celebrate the good times.  Working at home, I think we all need that.  It can feel rather isolating at times.

I think I have been working too much today, as I am losing my train of thought (provided I ever had one - ha).  I guess I just wanted to say that criticizing how others handle their own situations is not necessarily being positive.

Hope you have a great weekend.

Perplexed ?
You are lucky you have a good stable company. I worked at a company from 1980 through 2005. Typing the same amount of pages per pay check for almost that whole time. Each year I got a raise until 1995 when if I wanted a raise I had to go on line count. So I stayed at the same pay rate from 1995 until 2005 when I was forced on line count and my salary went down. From 1991 until 2005 I worked at a local hospital per diem (16-20 hours a week) and typed a certain amount of pages per pay period and got annual raises and for years in a row my salary went up. I made decent money, enough for a single mom with 2 kids to live comfortably and affort insurance on my own. Then in 2004 the hospital got rid of my per diem position and offered me a full time job which I took and worked 40 hours a week and my paychecks were about $250 less per week. In 2006 myself and other MTs were let go. I left my at home job in 2006 because my salary decreased so much due to the line count instead of the page count.

Through the 15 years I worked at the hospital they had 3 outside services and then due to cutting costs hired MQ as their only outside service which left 3 other services (and a lot of MTs) out of a big account. I worked for the same company in their office and then at home for 26 years.

My point is: I am a truly educated and a very quick typing MT and still am. It is just impossible for me to make a decent salary right now. I have been with a company since 12/05 and last year my salary was about as low as it was in 1982 because I am being paid by line what the company tells me I am typing and that's what I get paid, plus I pay $600 a mont for insurance becaue I am a single mother with 2 kids.

Once I went to the hospital full time I didn't type like crazy to get my pages in because whether I typed 1 or 10 pages an hour I still got the same low hourly wage. I sat there and talked and joined in the parties and took my breaks and went to the gift shop and got coffee and did just about as much as everyone else did the whole 13 years I sat there typing like crazy because I was paid by the page not the hour.

I do not appreciate you lumping us into your category. Plus if you have only been a MT for 10 years what you think is a good salary is probably a lot less than I made 15 years ago.
I'm perplexed....
Although I have come from the MDI-FL side, and maybe that is the difference, I have not encountered cherry-picking or awful accounts, that I know of. I will say some days I have wondered why everyone in my queue doesn't speak English, not even as a second language, I'd be closer to 3rd or 4th LOL. I know I'd think to myself that I know for a fact that a lot of my account has American doctors so where are they when I see all the junk in my queue. I do them anyway, but I'd be really ticked if I knew for a fact that there was easier work out there and they were hand picking it for other MTs who should have never been hired in the first place and they couldn't handle ESL etc. If anyone wants to share their experience or the account everyone is talking about, please feel free to email me. Thanks.
Perplexed and need some advice regarding current company...
I ran out of work last weekend on my main account and asked for a backup account.  I was told Monday that later this week I would get cross trained on a new account.  I have sent three to four emails with no response as to when we are training.  An obscure email was sent out today to everyone about how all the accounts are low and not to worry about it and we could take the day off and work this weekend or such.  I understand things are slow right now, but having absolutely no response to any of my emails is rather upsetting.  I know I am not their greatest producer, but I do not appreciate being ignored.  Any suggestions other than just sending a resignation email and see if I get a response?  LOL.   Thanks.
I'm perplexed. The few times I visit this board, ...SM
I frequently see people questioning companies, negating companies, etc. I can only speak for myself and 10 MT friends that I have had in the business for 10+ years now, we have almost all stayed with the same company for many years. We are all quite happy and paid a fair rate for what we are worth in experience and skills. When I peruse this board, I find that the profession comes across very negative. With all due respect, are the majority on this board new MTs trying to find their way, or MTs who cannot fit in with a company for whatever reasons (accuracy, speed, etc.) and shed such a terrible light on the profession. Y'all would not believe the positive networking with successful Transcriptionist who have truly been rewarded in their careers. Please know that if you are truly talented in this field and have built the number of experienced years required, this is not natural to see this negativity. I have been with a company (approx. 50 MTs for almost 10 years now) and have been treated and paid what I am worth. I'm beginning to think the majority of posts here are from those who cannot make it in this professsion. Believe it or not, most companies can recognize so within the first several weeks of work. No offense to anyone. I am sure there are many here who are much more talented than I am in different apsects of life. My point is: If you are truly educated and gifted in the MT field, you will continue to prosper. If not, this is not your calling. Try something different.
Did you ever get anything? I'm perplexed why some people got just cards, some got card and gift c
and some of us nothing.  I can't imagine they forgot some people but it's starting to look that way. Oh well, at least we have work.
