We need to draw more young and middle-aged ladies into this field. Quite a percentage of MTs are older and will retire in the next 10 years or so. Let's not scare potential new MTs. If you do the research, staffing in the US is already difficult as it is, one of the reasons for outsourcing work. Yes, I know the other reasons, but I really wish not to discuss that with this particular post.
I have been an MT for 11 years and have brought 5 wonderful, ambitous young ladies into this field, one fresh out of high school, two my own sisters, and two signing up for the Career Step course in the next couple of months.
It's still a very good career to get into, especially for a second income. I am going to encourage my nieces (and nephews) to consider it as a potential career.
Love to all my fellow MTs! :)
