I don't work for the Q or MDI or any of the nationals. I have been following this heart-breaking thread today and have read each and every post. There is one that went *DING DING DING* to me and that was the one where the poster said 500 minutes of back log work showed up and where did it come from. Where did it come from, hmmm? That pretty much explains that MDI is outsourcing. The owner is not going to come out and tell you all - yet. They may be in the midst of switching the accounts over and can't say yet or MDI will be a US front for an Indian company and that part hasn't been finalized, as there are a few out there. There are a few companies that keep a certain percentage of US transcriptionists under a front US company in order to win contracts and send the bulk overseas; think of it like a subcontractor. Especially government/state contracts. The only government contracts that I personally know of that the work CANNOT leave US soil are the VA, as anyone who wins that contract MUST perform a background check on each individual doing the work. A subcontractor set up is the ultimate money-maker. Company A here in the US subcontracts out to Company B in India or wherever for 2-3-4 cpl. Guaranteed Company A is making somewhere around 15 cpl + gross or they coldn't pay you all 7-8-9 cpl and make enough money to make a profit after paying costs. But they still need US transcriptionists in the event things don't work out as planned or Company B doesn't turn out to be as cost-effective as they thought after QA/VR.
I've been in this business for two decades as my own boss with my own clients. I would never work for a national for the very reasons you all are going through. You are all so talented and worth so much more! Go out and get your own clients! They will pay 10, 11, 12 cents a line GROSS lines. Go to the small offices in your neighborhood/city - all you need is 3 docs. You can make 3k-4k a month and don't even have work 40/hours a week doing it. I have always picked up my clients walking into doctor's office cold calling, going office to office and have always landed an office when I set out to - sometimes after going through dozens. I am not greedy, so I do not take more than I can handle by myself. Learned the hard way a couple times how flaky transcriptionists can be (no offense to anyone here). No, I don't have bennies, but my most important benefit is being employed at the fate of myself pretty much. For S & G, I applied to a national on here just to keep up on things. I was offered a position for 7 cpl. I did an archive search and just 9 months ago they were paying 9 cpl. WTH???! Same clients for the last 10 years. I thanked them, but declined. Companies know the market is flooded with transcriptionists and are taking total advantage of each and every one of us. Until someone in our Government realizes that they MUST forbid any off-shoring of records preparation, we are at the total mercy of the companies and they know it!
Okay, off my soap box... I truly wish all of you (us) happiness and security in your life's travels.
