Shoot scuse my typos...tired...bad docs...long day...

few typos in that last post...
I did already email the ones who asked.

Hope we all find the perfect company and make really great money!
Sorry for the typos in the post above, I am
just taken aback by this sudden news and the words are coming out pretty quickly. The correct words are They and going. Sorry for typos.
I do agree with some of your post but 6 TYPOS..sm

I do agree with some of what you typed - the small mindedness and all that, but you definitely do have 6 typographical  errors just in that little post and yes, it's just a bulletin board.....but if one is a master MT, well that reflects usually in everything that passes through their hands...including some internet posting on forums/boards.

just my nickel's worth....

oops sorry the typos - my 1st post.
You definitely cannot tell I have 19 yrs of experience by that post!! Yikes.  Sorry about that.  I think you can figure out what I mean, though.  Thanks for your help.
yes - excuse the typos in above post please. nm

I don't remember - but it was not long...
I work 6 hours a day and do 2000 lines a day. Their platform is not hard to learn - just took me a few days to get my word Expander loaded and going good.
Been in the biz long enough to remember . .
when there was a shortage of MTs (25-30 years ago) or at least that was my perception, as I had more business than I could handle and docs, MTSOs and hospitals were after ME to do their work - and this was in SoCal where there was some real competition for business and pretty decent money. Now all I see these days is every one of my own doctors walk around with their laptops inputting their own information, all telling me they no longer need to use MTs at all (and seem to gloat over that fact, too).

Have worked for a national MTSO and just hope to be able to hold out for another 10 years or so (mind and body willing and able) if there's enough work for US MTs with a wage that doesn't keep decreasing over time, forget any raises anymore, haven't seen that in almost 10 years.
From what I remember not very long. They are flexible, pay is decent, good dictators,
I have never had any problem with them.
Remember, you are covered as long as you have documented Out of Work tickets - sm
You can still qualify for holiday pay if you try to get in your 32 hrs, and receive the NSA message. If there is no work, there is no work and they can't hold your holiday pay.
Great Post! I remember this all now.
rusty! OP was great, but you really explained it very well to those of us who had forgotten.... much to think about.
oooh. I do remember the post saying whoever it was they use escription
but I looked it up in the search engine but it didn't come up.  I know TTS has a bad name from the looks of things.
Does anyone remember the post about traveling transcription

I see where the position was filled, but I cannot find the original posting for it, and I would be interested in at least sending a resume for future travel assignments.  Does anyone happen to remember it or who it was for??

Amber - great post!! I remember selectrics....sm

And stayed on the Selectric for nearly 10 years pre-word processing computers (pre-Internet).  I remember, we had no self-correcting - we had to use a white tape to remove a letter.  But in those days, I did 2000 lines PER DAY!!!  At 6 CPL. And I worked 5-1/2 days a week in their office.  I had 12 accounts there.  So, I know my value and I know I'm not making my line counts for the BIG national since 1/1/06.

I agree with you that MTs will always be necessary. I too have been doing VR for about nearly 2 years and it all comes in terribly garbled via VR and we have to make it all nice and professional looking.  I love VR though today, I rarely get any VR reports. Don't know where they have been farmed out to either.

Thanks for your insightful post!!!  I, too, am tired of the moaning and groaning....something I never *indulge* in.  All this complaining is an indulgence in my mind.

Be well and thanks again for your insightful post!!

I remember the jewish post but I recall the poster
trying to turn the whole thread into something ugly because there was only a christian forum on that site. As a Jew, I was embarrassed by the whole thing. I remember an agnostic poster asking for a separate board and the owner added nondemoninational board. Just my two cents.
I remember your post several weeks ago..Hopefully, you still arent working for these people. I'm
sure they have been paid by their client. Why do they think they can rip people off. You need to post their name so that noone else bothers with them. Oh yeah, I think I remember now..It was someone named Joanna who asked for overflow help on podiatry, right? I am ashamed to admit that I submitted my resume. Luckily, she never called or I would be doing what your doing..Nightmare..
should HAVE proofread that
nom
How do you proofread as you type?
I believe one of the reasons my productivity is substandard is because I go back through every dictation, re-read it, and sometimes have to return to the dictation.  I want to produce as close to 100% accuracy as I can.  However, my supervisor tells me to PROOF WHILE I TYPE?  Huh?  How do you DO that?  and type with any kind of speed?  Thanks for any advice!
Oopsie - you might need to PROOFREAD that! LOL
X
No, you're supposed to proofread everything
because you are too lazy to proofread. Blame it on VR if you want to, but those people need to find another *profession*.
This is an issue of an MT not having confidence in her abilities. You can proofread while you SM

type.  I've been doing it for years.  I only re-read reports that the dictator is extremely nonsensical, can't put a sentence together to save his/her life, or if the dctator just seems like they don't know what they are doing.  But other than that, I feel pretty confident that I put out accurate reports.  I generally get 99-100% on my QA evals and I'm one the high producers in my department.

I've trained many a Transcriptionist who double, triple, even quadruple check everything they type because they just don't trust themselves.  If you are a newbie, I can understand not trusting yourself yet, but generally if you've been doing this for more than 2 years, you should know what you're doing and you should trust yourself.  If you don't, then you're in the wrong business.  Unfortunately, we are in a profession were we are expected to be both accurate and productive.  If you have a problem achieving both, then again you're in the wrong profession.

I totally agree! I still proofread every report...sm
before hitting submit and haven't had any critical mistakes. I'm not saying my work is perfect 110% of the time, but whose is? The main offenders are the one that should be reprimanded. The reason I mentioned QA is because the majority of MTs on this account are on 100% QA.
As long as her post is truthful
And not embellished and she has her lay-off notice and emails to back her up, she should be fine.

The other person served papers apparently presented things on this board libelous and defamatory about a company; things that were not as factual as they were preesnted to be. THAT is when one must be careful.

MT30+ is relating a personal experience, not presenting speculation as fact.

She will be fine, legally speaking.

Any suggestions. This post is long, but some of it can be skipped if you want!

Does anyone have any suggestions for being able to check out the important aspects of a job and a company before doing all the testing, signing all the paperwork, going through training, etc?  I have been in several situations in which the person doing the hiring makes the job sound so wonderful, but then when I actually start training, there are lots of things that are just frustrating and that were not presented to me at the time of hire.  I hoped we could compile a good list of things to ask a company/HR person before taking an MT job.  (QAers can also make a list!)  We could just all add things as they occur to us to help others.  I'm sure I'm not the only one who has been led down the primrose path when a company has presented what the job will be like!  We've all been there!  :)  The last place I was hired was just terrible, and that was the last straw.  So, I need to make sure I'm smarter in my job search before accepting positions with companies and then finding out the rest of the story later.  I know you can't know everything about a job before actually doing it, but I'm so tired of being misled.

My last experience was this:  (This is a little long but pertinent to my question to show what I mean by my not knowing enough about a company before committing to it, so feel free to just skip it and provide any suggestions about my question above.  Sorry for the long post!)

The last company that I hired with sounded great.  I was to be assigned a doctor after my training period for whom I would transcribe regularly, and I liked the idea of typing for one doctor on a regular basis.  During training, they trained me on other doctors besides the one I would transcribe for, and then they asked me if I would take a doctor as my primary account who was very unhappy with the transcription services he received from their company.  They gave me the choice if I wanted this position or not.  I considered it, but then I decided that since I had only been with the company for three weeks and was still in training, that it might not be a good idea to place a new Transcriptionist (I’m not new to transcription, but I was definitely new to their company) on that account.  I also needed to be provided with information as to what would be done in cases when he was on vacation (a schedule of which they would not give me so that I could plan when I wouldn’t have work).  I asked if I would I transcribe for other doctors, etc. so as not to be without a paycheck during the times when my primary doctor was away.  Once I asked these questions and also expressed my concerns about being placed on an account where the doctor was already unhappy, they sent me an e-mail stating that they had no work for me.  I was baffled, and sent a letter explaining the situation to an HR person.  They sent me a reply stating that my performance had not been up to par during training and that I am terminated.  I was so shocked.  I have always been a very accurate transcriptionist, and since no one had said anything to me about my work not being good quality during training, I assumed I was on track with their company, especially when they offered me a primary so soon after being hired when I wasn’t even out of training.  By the way, it is a good thing I didn’t need much training because this company is VERY poor in the training department.  You only get to read their manual.  I didn’t get any type of real training on anything other than how to submit my line counts, and that was not even covered fully.  Their manual, which is just about the only thing you have to refer to as you cannot get a return phone call or a return e-mail from a supervisor when you have a question, has steps left out of it.  (Perhaps I should go ahead and leave any company once I find out that the training and communication are poor as that seems to be a telltale sign of poorly-run companies.)  Just to be clear, I read posts from other people on this board who say good things about this company, so I wasn’t expecting them to be like this.  This company never said anything during my training about my work performance being below what they expected.  In fact, I don’t think they would have offered me the position of transcribing for this doctor who was already unhappy with turn-around times and quality work had my work performance been substandard.  Only when I asked questions about the account and said I didn’t think it would be wise to put me as a new transcriptionist on that account did they terminate me and say that my work performance was not acceptable.  It’s my feeling that they got angry with me that I did not want to be set up for a fall by transcribing for a doctor who was already unhappy with the services he was getting from them from a previous transcriptionist, so they began fabricating things about my performance.  I mean, if my performance was not acceptable to them, then why did no one say anything to me about that until after I said I would prefer a different doctor and also to know what would be done to provide me with work at times when the doctor would be away.

So, the reason I’m typing all this is to say that I want to ask the right questions of companies, but when I asked questions of this particular company, I was terminated.  Does anyone think that asking questions about pay, schedule, etc., will keep you from getting a job or from keeping the job once you accept it?  I have never been involved with any jobs that didn’t let you know what you can expect in terms of work or in terms of a schedule until I began medical transcription, so I thought asking these types of questions wouldn’t be anything out of the ordinary.  I guess this is just a completely backward industry when it comes to things like that which we take for granted in the rest of the professional world.  And I certainly didn’t expect this company to begin fabricating problems with my work performance when I did ask some questions!  It seems as if the transcription companies want the MT to commit all their time and energy to them, but when they are asked to provide a stable working environment and a schedule, they refuse.  It’s pretty one-sided in my opinion.  I mean, I sit up nights until 4:00 a.m. to meet deadlines and I work every weekend to accommodate what is needed on my accounts, as I’m sure many of us do who transcribe!  Shouldn’t we able to expect to be treated with respect as employees?  I’m not desperate for work as I do have two other jobs, so I am trying to look out for myself and get a fitting position and have it longterm, but when a company fires you for expressing concerns and asking questions, it’s pretty confusing as to what they want.  And my other experiences in medical transcription have been similar.  I have never been told that the quality of my work was not up to par, however until this most recent company!  What I mean is that I’ve just run across companies that don’t tell you the real story up front and also mistreat you as an employee.  One of my supervisors at my current job told me that she has been in this business for over 20 years, and that even though it’s not pleasant, I should just expect this to be the norm in this business.  She is very level-headed and really smart and experienced, so I trust what she says.  It’s just pretty frustrating to think that this is the type of industry I have to look forward to!

I do want to “search smarter” for jobs next time.  I have a bachelor’s degree in English and Communication Arts, teach English, and I have over three years of transcription experience.  I don’t expect to start with a company as the boss or even at the very top pay, but I feel that I should be able to find a good company, and I want to ask the right questions.  Any ideas out there?

There originally was a long thread with this post. As
x
look back a few days.. LONG post about this

3800-4200 per month - sm long post
I have worked for the same national for the past 8 years.

I might add that I have not made this much every year but it has been a gradual increase.

I get an average rate 0.085 and set personal daily goals far above the minimum required. If I reach my goal of 2000 lines in 8 hours, great, if I don't, oh well. Not worth killin myself over.

I go to all of the kids functions, games, plays, concerts, take them to and from school, practices, etc...

I take advantage of the extra incentives when I feel I have the energy and sometimes when I don't but they really need to get the TAT back in line.

They don't ask over much of me.

I would make a few recommendations for you.

First, do not throw in the towel with one company after a few months just because you aren't where you want to be as far as production goes. New polices, accounts, platforms... all of it takes time to learn and get comfortable with.

Secondly, set your OWN goals. Increase them slowly over time so you don't feel like you are chained to your desk. You will see your production start to increase soon enough.

Thirdly, if you aren't hasseled constantly, get a decent rate, and have a decent support system in your coworkers and supervisors, compare that with the other places you have been and ask yourself why you left in the first place, then weigh your options.

I left my last employer because there was a lot of gossip and little work getting done and I am a doer. It just drove me bananas. Much happier now.

Lastly, even with my current company, I have had to start from scratch several times due to loss of an account, loss of my expanders or macros due to technical reasons, I have filled myself during the feasts and starved through the famines but, I would much rather be right where I am than anywhere else.

Geesh..It's been a long day. I don't think I made any sense on that post.
Bottom line is, best pay rate out there, most of the time enough work and good benefits. They have a lot of happy employees.
I knew it wouldn't take long for a flamer to post...sm
I don't even know where to start. Do YOU have a child(ren) who plays soccer every Saturday or football every Sunday? Do YOU go to church? Do YOU have kids you want to take to Sunday school? Some of us that work at home need that weekend time to spend with our families and GOD!

You show me any other profession that requires a person to work either every Sat or Sun. There isn't any!! Doctors rotate and so do nurses! It just sounds to me like these MTSOs don't want to take the time or spend the money for a scheduler. How hard can it be???
2 typos
maybe no QA?

Sorry about the typos
I meant to type she said she could not hire someone who could not follow directions.  My mind went before my fingers on that one.
I apologize for the typos.
I guess I shouldn't try to type when I'm upset.
Grammar and typos
I believe that Goldbird posted the same thing about there being no need to correct people on the board for typos or grammatical errors. There's really no need.
We all make typos!
Daphne,

Let me tell you one thing. I am not perfect and I did not proof my work in typing this note. I was just typing my fingers away and going from one chat to another. That was very unprofessional of you as an MT, supervisor, owner, etc., for you to throw your HATEFUL comments at me about me making a grammar error about worse versus worst. We all make mistakes. I have seen so many owners make mistakes. We are not perfect humans. We all make mistakes. Grow up!!!! You are acting like a child. I appreciate the Administrator on MT Stars to respect me as an individual and realizing that I make mistakes, but you should not advertise on this chat board to thousands of MTs about how stupid I am about making a grammar error where I forgot to proof my work. Why don't you go through every single one of these responses and start editing every single MTs grammar. I can guarantee you will find just as many errors like you did mine. Please be careful what you say in the future. Thanks again MT Stars administration for looking out for me regardless if I made a typo on my grammar!
Well, at least I can laugh at my typos - sm
some of ya'll seem to take them way, WAY to seriously. (And to hopefully avert any more flaming about being sloppy in my work, I'm TALKING ABOUT silly little mistakes we make when we're dashing off quick posts & emails.) And do you really think my thread is actually TESTIER than some of the total ragging that's been going on whenever someone on these boards stands up and calls a spade a spade?
Not!
Please excuse the typos...been up since 4 a.m.!
nm
Not really. Typos happen.
`
Typos happen, but
That is why you proof, and proof again, a document that is important to the image of the company. It looks extremely unprofessional!
Were the typos there for a reason maybe? nm
.
Ahh Shux on the typos-
I thought I had an editing option before it posted. Be kind typing police :)
Exuse typos (sm)
Title should read: SS owes everyone on this board and the other board her deepest apologies.

Also, 1st sentence last word no should be deleted.

I guess I should calm down and take a deep breath before posting in anger!
Love the typos in the ad....
65 charter count and trasncription, LOL!!!
I'm more offended by the typos in the ad. nm

I agree with this regarding typos, but not a
grammar mistake that appears in the same post over 10 times, this really makes me cringe.
IMO if one is too tired to post without making 'cringing' grammar mistakes, then just log off and go to bed.
Tomorrow is another day!
