Does that necessarily mean anything?

Common practice?
Is it common practice now days to type 4 different accounts - 7 different work types in one 8 hour shift?  I'm experiencing this as a FT employee for a well known company - Other than this, the company is wonderful ....this has given me great experience, but my pay has decreased.....Do I need to suck it up and keep pounding away or look elsewhere?  Any advice appreciated!!!
RE: Common practice?
Suck it up. You really do not have a problem.
family practice companies
Does anyone out there know of any companies with good family practice accounts?
You need to disable ESP......
In the lower left hand corner of the ESP screen is a box that says PAUSE. Click that, and then ESP will not expand and interfere with your expander.
They disable Control-I
to be able to control the line count...could be good, could be bad. Depends.

IC status, cont'd

>>>This is what I meant above by how a company is saying work this shift as an IC at this line rate.  As an IC, I have the right to work when I choose to work, not when my clients choose.  If my clients want to make demands (and yes I have one client that is an MTSO), then I would become an employee at that point and they must pay my taxes.

You’re half correct. What you would become is a statutory employee (SE), not a “regular employee,” like you would be if you worked in an office. In the case of the SE, the company and/or individual they provide service for would be required to pay 7.5% of the social security tax, but that’s as far as it goes. You would still need to withhold your own federal tax in addition to other taxes like Medicare. Furthermore, and the law used to state that anyone who works exclusively for a single company/individual is classified as a SE, by law.

The 20 guidelines I posted here and on the Main Broad are merely a framework. Each individual should speak with a lawyer who specializes in Employer/Employee law or directly with the IRS.

>>>I've seen people post as employees saying they have no work during their shift and are asked to flex, which is also wrong.  It's just crazy how this profession continues to be used and abused and now there are MTs convinced it's okay because they need a job.  It's just a neverending cycle.  JMO

I don’t agree that (all) MTs are convinced it’s okay. They’re simply not fully aware of the laws, or they know the laws but feel they’re stuck “between a rock and a hard place.” Either they “agree to the terms” (of the contract) or they won’t be able to pay their bills. But, it’s still the element of control and the MT *still* has the final say:  “I agree to the Tues-Sat shift for 8 cpl.”

There are two other issues that come to mind. First, the line rate. An IC determines what constitutes a line, and informs the client accordingly. Usually, they choose the software they wish to use (i.e. Sylcount), but sometimes the MTSO will tell them, “We use Abacus and count spaces and returns only; no formatting codes” and that’s okay. However, if you have IC status you should NEVER let the MTSO do the line calculation on their end and then tell you how many lines you’ve transcribed. Doing so gives the MTSO “the element of control,” which makes you their employee.

The second issue is a little trickier and it concerns the “application process.” Again, what applies to the IC also applies to the MTSO. When the MTSO approaches a client (i.e. Osh Begosh Hospital) to offer their service, they try their best to sell their service and secure a contract in the process. They do not fill out a job application nor do they take a transcription test. That’s what an employee does, not an IC. The IC provides references, and that’s it.

In the final analysis, knowing the law is one thing and adhering to the law is another. You can tell the service what the law is, and they can just as easily tell you that your services are not needed. And, unfortunately, that’s pretty much where it’s at right now and where it will continue to remain.

Who else are the people who refuse to work going to have pay for their stuff?
I function without a lot of sleep
I try to get up at about 4 a.m., work until 7 when my daughter gets up, start working again at 8 a.m. until she comes home at 3. I guess I do work evenings sometimes, but my desk is right by the kitchen so I'm up and down a lot then. Sometimes I stay up until 11 or so to work after she goes to bed. I do sometimes feel like I'm always working, but I ran up some credit card bills a few years ago and promised to bring in a certain amount of money to help pay down that debt, and now I'm living up to my part of the bargain. Again, though, I do work a lot and sometimes feel like I'm missing out on life, but don't a lot of us feel that way?
If you use the Search function
at the top of the page and put in HIP, there are a few posts from 2004 and 2005.  Hope that helps a little.  Are they hiring right now?
cntr I function
gives you the # of reports. For example, so far today 13 reports gave me about 700 lines, a mix of OP notes and H&Ps. My company does not count the headers or footers either. I think 1500 lines a day or more is probably obtainable on this system. Im new, Im still busy plugging in normals and learning dictators. To have to type 30 or more reports as I was told by one company to even hit 1000 lines is just BS. Of course cntrl I was not enabled so I was essentially working blind. Took me about 2 months to catch on unfortunately.
Practice what you preach. Your a** has been on here all day!
;-)
Why not practice being French
here to see how you like it?  Try being snotty and rude.  Sneer and pretend you don't understand what people are saying.  Maintain a disdainful countenance, while dissing the USA.  Set fire to a couple of cars.  Demand 8 weeks paid vacation and then refuse to work anyhow.
Not exactly defending the practice
First, I'm not a big fan of mandatory overtime anyway. I understand sometimes they need it, but after 40, there are some weeks where I don't even have another minute in me to give them.

I've also had the same thing with overtime...being happy because they're requesting it for an account that's semi-easy and I'm good at, and then logging on to find out it's the account from hail. I can't be the only one from that hail-storm to be working, and I can only assume they're not too backed up because they're not the ones looking for OT, so why oh why oh why must I type any of the Chennai Boomhauer in my spare time.

It must have something to do with different turnaround because I don't think my place assigns them. At least in theory, although I've not seen the spread sheets to prove it, it's first in/first out to me. I did ask them about this one other time I signed on for overtime at the slightly better place and got stuck with Hail Community Hospital. I was still eligible for the OT, but I'd have gotten probably double if I'd have been typing the actual account that needed the OT.
Word function keys
Yes, this does happen. There is a little program that goes into your computer when they load Transnet, which disables the function keys of Word. Ctrl S in Word is Save, Ctrl S in Transnet is to search prior jobs, etc. Ctrl N in Word brings up a new document. Ctrl N in Transnet ends and spell checks the job. THis should go away when you UNINSTALL Transnet the proper way.
Cannot get search function to work. I go up to the box
at the top of the page for the Google search and move it to search ''MT Stars.com'' but it never comes back with anything. I have tried several companies that I know have been mentioned on this board but it always comes back with no results.
Use your zoom function to make it
larger but make sure to return it to 100% when you are done.  It saves it the larger print if you don't.  It is easy to enlarge before and then decrease after.  I wouldn't want it to come to me other than 100% either....so I am very careful to maintain it when I am done as a courtesy.
yawning is a natural function but

so is flatulence.  You don't mind if people and/or doctors do that right in your face without apologizing? Tired, bean-filled, or what not.

Cntr I function should be available within the program
if you're talking about the Extext program where you have to go to the Ichart website to get lines and cannot verify # of reports to go with those lines then this is shifty. There is a line counter within the program that works just fine when it is enabled.
When company does not allow CTRL i function to be used by its MT's.
EXText is the platform you transcribe in, but EXSpeech is the VR portion of Dictatphone EXText.
The email function is not working.

My STM said it was b/c the Alt-G and history function was creating sm
a potential HIPAA problem because it was copying a viewed patient name into your current document sometimes. Alt-G and history are connected somehow apparently? She also said they were bringing viewing history back later on this year.
They told us before the reason that function had been
disabled was because of the difference in counts, that program counts ALL words and ichart does not -- headers are not paid for and add up to a lot of lines. I don't think there is any difference from before.
Free Practice Test

This will give you some sound files and practice tests - http://www.meditec.com/meditec-skills-test.html

Unfortunately, many practice this unethical behavior. sm
I worked for a company that sold out to MQ. A certain person took all of the names of the MTs with her when she went to another company, went after the accounts this company had, and tried to recruit the MTs for that account for the new company.

I asked how they go my name and number as I had never applied to this new company before - and I was told so and so worked at such company and we have this account now and you used to work on for such and such company....etc. I was shocked to say the least!

So, yes it does happen, and NO I never took the job and asked them to please not contact me again that I was not interested.

Nothing is sacred anymore - not even our privacy let alone the hospitals and patients!

is there any type of practice test
you can take to help prepare for it or at least give you an idea of what's covered?
Yes, hiring practice was right 'fit' for me
Imagine hiring someone just based on their resume and a phone interview. Aha, the catch? You have to pass a very rigorous 10-day QA process, can transcribe only 5 reports a day during that time. It is challenging, but well worth it at the end of that time. You decide if it's the right job, and they decide if you are the right employee.

Like I said, old school.
If you are using Express Scribe, you can use your function keys and...
the instructions are in the Help section or maybe it is in Setup.  Good luck on the test!
MD-IT info? Search function not working...sm
I am wondering MD-IT ... specifically, do they hire IC, and are they only acute care or do they have clinic work?  Their website doesn't give much in the way of specifics for employment, but directs to testing. If anyone has any information they want to share, would love to hear it!   TIA.
Transtech has that function blocked from our use . . . go figure why?
I am at a loss for all this blocking ExText functions from us.  Yes, I have worked on ExText before, also, and could use any function that it had to offer to the MT.
Spelling correctly would help search function. nm

Reread, I do not use the Ctrl B function, so cannot answer. Sorry!

Does that include the overhiring practice of Transcend's
so none of us can make a decent living, or the miserable platform transcend brought with it?
Oh, I understand. I wasn't condoning the practice
of not paying for no work situations at all. Just commenting that MQ was not the only one to fail to do so.

Although I have never been out of work with either MQ or Spheris, should that situation have occurred I would have been all the more reliant on the other position's income.
I once had a group practice client, which included ...sm
6 physicians. The most irritating one was the doc from India who had been in the U.S. for at least 15 years (I know this because I went to school with his children), and refused to even work on losing at least a small part of his accent. He was so ridiculous, and each time I typed his work, I said to myself I swear this guy purposely works at keeping his thick accent just to irritate me! Interestingly, 2 of his partners in the practice were ESL (had only been in the U.S. for 1-2 years), and their accent was much less severe. These were younger docs, who in my opinion, made an effort to get with the program if they want to practice medicine here! I do believe that people can actually make themselves hold onto their accents. I have a friend who is from the south (She has lived near me in the SE part of the country for 20 years) and she continues to have a strong southern accent. She has not lived in the south since she was a small child. I tease her about it.
That is totally unacceptable business practice.

Never mind, search function back up and working.

TT sent out email saying CTRL i function is 7-12% higher than paid-for line counts,

so you would need to deduct 7-12% off function of CTRL I.

Per TT email regarding this subject, the headers and footers average between 7-12% of a document . . .   Conversely, if you are transcribing a two to three line report/addendum, the header and footer may be as much as 50% or greater.

So, it is true that if we transcribe short reports, we are given the pleasure of transcribing almost FREE for TT !!!

This is about as clear as we MT's can get from TT regarding this line counting issue.

With practice and expansion usage, you'll get there! Stop dwelling on the

Curious. Scrolling down yesterday and noted comment about unfair labor practice
