Hi flmt,
I have applied and tested with Terra Nova in the past. I answer the requests for MTs every time I see their ads. I never, ever get a response from them. It's bothersome because they seem to want people to work for them, yet they have never responded to me. I don't even know if I have passed the tests.
In my opinion, don't waste your time. If you ever do get a response after submitting your resume and/or testing, let me know. Maybe I failed the testing and they just didn't feel like being decent with a response.

the person who confirmed your response could have just been HELPFUL AND TACTFUL to the person asking for help instead of getting all high nosed about it like he/she is part of the elite.

I have great transcription times. Instead of 4:1 or 3:1, I'm definitely 2:1 and have one dictator that I can actually type as fast as he can talk, yielding a 1:1. I have easy work (physical therapy), use word Expanders and just look at what I type as I'm typing. I don't re-read, never have, never will but easily hold to 99-100% accuracy. Once in a while, I might put in something like state for stat but honestly, my clients love my work and my clean reports.

not all VR platforms are created equal just like all platforms for straight MT are not created equal. My guess would be that either the platform you mention as being the best will take over the marketplace or the others will manage to get their platforms up to par. Once that happens though I could venture a guess as to what will come next.

I you work for my company, which I suspect you might, this seems
account and I am talking for a couple of years, adn did not need to ask for more work. Then slowly the work started being less and less for that particular account, and in fact, 2 of the work types were completely taken out of the pool - OPs that I did and never, never ran low on for one. I have had 7 new ones since October, now it seems to be settling into just 2 or 3 per week. If you want to work, there is no limit to how many you should do. It is confusing though and mistakes are being made I am sure of it, me included.

Years ago when I entered the field (more than I care to admit), the MT was a commodity. Training programs were few and far between (my hospital was training their own since they couldn't find bodies). Now, not only do we have the Indians and other foreign entities and VR, but we also have MT schools on the back of matchbooks, late night TV commercials, and spam mail in our inboxes. Suddenly, millions of people are doing it which, as we all know, not only limits the work each person can get but also drives down the wage, as those of us who have been here a while can verily attest.
I don't think the MTSOs even staff in particular for TAT. I think that's just a bonus. It's much cheaper to pay two or three people part-time hours than have to pay one person benefits.
I understand even less now. MQ does not have the title of "proofer" either! No editors and no
proofers! Just makes me wonder who you really are. No offense, but a long time ago lots of lawyers were fishing for info using questions like yours. I've been with MQ for 14 years, in a lot of "titles", and never heard 1 office having proofers! Not one of our job descriptions! As for retroactive pay, I have never heard of that either! So guess I'll just exit now, as obviously cannot help you!

it was a good time to retire. If you Google Transcription Stat and Sausalito (where the MTSO at the root of the whole affair was located--interesting because the office used to be in downtown San Francisco and Sausalito was where Kim lived. Wonder if she was running it out of her home at the time the whole thing went down...), all you get is references to the UCSF affair so I suspect she is no longer in business. Didn't one article say her UCSF work totally dried up after that? That was her main account, as far as I know.

Medical language specialist is a title made up by MTs. The truth is...sm
...we are transcriptionists. Our job is to type what the doc/PA/nurse dictates. Look at a court reporter; she can call herself a legal language specialist or a juris stenographer or whatever else she comes up with, but her job is to provide a transcript of WHAT IS SAID in court. She is not changing anything, and nobody expects her to. In fact, if she did, there would be huge repercussions!
Same for closed captioning transcriptionists. What is said goes in the ears and out the fingers, no changes.
The difference between us and them is that we deal in medical language.
My title and my job is medical transcriptionist. I have also been a transcription editor. If the account says type verbatim, I do just that, and it matters not to me if the doc ends the sentence with a preposition. I'm here to provide a hard copy of what he said, not make him look like he went to charm school. If the doc/site/account/client decides the charts look foolish, they are free to allow me light editing privileges for the sake of clarity.
If you want to correct someone else's words, become a copy editor.

then the transcribed work is sent BACK to India to be pasted into the GEMS platform and then sent back to the clients in America, how on earth can the company claim to be US-based because its Indian owner has a home in Kentucky?

I worked for them for a little while several years back. They might have disorganization issues, but they are a local Texas company and to my knowledge do not outsource. The people who own it are super nice, honest people.

Does anyone know if contractors have any rights? Are they allowed to hold money even if the equipment has been returned?
