I was talking to the younger people on this board basically

because I am seeing where people are sitting here actually waiting for work to come in while they don’t have enough money for their bills, no money for food, no money to survive on. Why in the world if you are younger do you beat a dead horse so to speak because this profession is steadily going down as it is and if you don’t have money now, do you think over the next few years it is going to improve? I have worked most of my years in this business away from home. I had children but years ago we were not given the choice of working from home, imagine that! We probably then had more of a family life than what I read on this board now with people saying in order to squeak out a living they are working 24/7. I have probably worked more than most here but when I had jobs outsourced from underneath me I had no option to sit and wait for work to come my way. I went and found more. There is a simple solution but most here just seem to complain and do nothing except go right down the drain.

Basically, what I'm saying is that people are so quick to want a union but...
they do not realize that in this day and age, their job can shoot straight out of the company. In fact, it's also working the opposite - Indians, Phillipines, Brazilians are being shipped in to do nursing now! South Americans are being shipped in to work on hurricane relief efforts clearing mold and hazardous material for $8.50/hour for FEMA.
I worked for SS and some people were very RUDE and I am talking about the editing people in some
instances.  It ALL depends on the person, as it does with any company.  They paid on time and the lady over me was very nice, but boy the person in QA was mean to EVERYONE!!  Never seen anything like it before.
what other board are you talking about? I don't see it?!
nm
So ? I'm talking about they want another board.
nm
SO right! People who get paid to bring people on-board -sm
to these companies (few, if any, are 100% honest, it seems), are going to be honest and tell you anything that isn't rosy and sugar-coated. Having a good prospective MT walk because the company isn't so great means less green dollars in their bank account every month. They're not going to tell us anything that DOESN'T make them more money.
Board is for talking BETWEEN the MTs, not the companies!
Aren't you being ugly? LOL

Maybe you should be pulled!

You are talking about 2 different people
I was not the one who posted the article. Maybe the poster works there, I don’t. Oh, I answered corporate's email here because I do not care for others to contact me, thank you.
I was talking about the giveaway on this board. $50 certif. yesterday. nm

People keep talking about mid size companies sm
but which are they? Keystrokes, TT? Are they mid size? That means better? I think it just depends on who you are, how much experience and what platform you end up getting and with accounts going here, there any everywhere, lots of luck.
If that is not what she meant, and she was just talking about greedy business people, then...
why did she feel the need to say that the business person was Arabian? If she was just talking about greedy business people, then why would his nationality matter?

See my point?
Diskriter - interested in talking to people who left. SM
I am presently working for another company and am somewhat satisfied.  Am considering Diskriter.  I do not want to make a wrong decision.  If you worked there and left, please let me know if you would be willing to give me some information (bad or good).  I know people hesitate to get into specifics on this forum - email me and I will contact you.  I am just so hesitant to make another change.
50 is not old. I'm 60. Believe me, if I were 10 yrs younger, I would
NM
It's just a figure of speech. When I was younger -
we used to say, 'That's so ORTHOPEDIC'. It pretty much had the same meaning as what the kids use 'retarded' for now. It could mean anything from 'backward', 'slow', or 'clueless'. In the 40's, 'gay' meant 'happy', not 'homosexual.' 'Neat' once meant 'tidy', then it came to mean 'cool', now it appears to be back to 'tidy' once again. What a word means often depends upon which generation or age group is speaking it.
new career for some of you younger folks

I have been helping my son investigate career options and discovered that dental hygienists make 62K a year after completing a mere two-year program.

I guess one must ask oneself if they are squeamish about cleaning out other people's mouths, but I think I could get over it pronto (if I was younger) knowing how this profession has gone down the spit sink.

New career for some of you younger folks
A good field to get into is physical therapy, OT or speech therapy or physical therapy assistant. They make good money in my area. I note ads for them all of the time especially in sports medicine.
Linda, you are soooo right, when I was younger and dumber....sm
I was sooo afraid of using shortcuts, I watched the screen like a hawk and typed everything verbatim and screwed myself out of so much money!  I wondered what the secret was to all those MTs who would chat up a storm, and till make a higher line count than me, and they had less experience....They used their shortcuts/expanders for everything, and once I learned this and worked on mine, my line count zoomed and I consistently made high incentive pay and bonus....don't underestimate this tool.  Thanks for bringing this up, Linda!
Yep one of two people on this board
LOLOLOLOL
You people are a joke on this board...
the original poster just asked a simple frigging question! I used to work at OSi and I know who he/she is referring to. JP was a nice lady, and someone I learned a lot from, and maybe she just wondered if she still worked there.
Many people come to this board to find out
have had with MT companies that they may be checking out or applying to. I personally appreciate any information that I gain from this board and from the experiences - good or bad - of anyone who is kind enough to post that information before other people have a terrible experience with a company like not getting paid, like getting ripped off, like being lied to, or otherwise. I've also found a great transcription job as a direct result of the positive comments made about that company on this very board. If you want everyone to post nothing but positive comments, what is the significance of the Company board?

Who died and left you in charge of being the posting police?
And you trust the people on this board?
x
There are a lot of angry people on this board, but some of us here
are professionals and it is very difficult to read boards with the amount of unprofessionalism we see on these boards. I think we can expect it from some MTs in our field but when the companies come and act totally unprofessional I believe that is where we should take it that that company will be no different if you work for them.
Why must people be so negative on this board?? nm
nm
IS THIS AN OSI AND MQ BOARD, OTHER PEOPLE THAT GRIPE GET CRUCIFIED. I.E. SS

When we get on this board and complain about our line count at SoftScript we get immediately told to go away.  Our lines disappear day by day.  Yet, any post for OSi or MQ seems to stay.  We are people with legitimate gripes too (not to).  Yet, we in turn get told to find a new job while you people continually gripe about your companies stealing from you.  Try getting your lines taken away from you on a retrospective day to day basis and see how you like it.  At least your lines are still there the next days, ours are not.  WE HAVE A RIGHT TO GRIPE TOO.

This is so true. People on MQ board always complaining, but sm
things do not seem to be that much better elsewhere according to a lot of posts on here. It's always something.
Thank you to all the KS people who posted below - Love this board! NM
nm
People have asked moderators for VR board, not just this
particular company.
Its why people complain about negativity on this board
Some people want to think that the people posting negative things here are just malcontents.  Sometimes, when a person speaks the truth, half a dozen other folks jump on to say its not the truth and everything is roses and rainbows.  Usually the truth is somewhere in the middle.  But some people would prefer to believe the sunshine being blown you-know-where by recruiters because they want to think they have lucked into a goldmine.  Well, its a crap shoot - maybe you did and maybe you didn't.  Each person's truth is going to hit them only after they are working the account.  So if she only wants to hear about the rainbows, let her have her fantasy.  Reality will come soon enough when she gets no paycheck.  Then she can pay her bills with all the rainbows.
This board is not to attack people by name. Please read about Keystrokes. sm

attack people by name.  In Lee's defense, she has over 200 people working for Keystrokes now and accounts in a lot of different states.  As managers, we have started taking on more of the day-to-day and HR and the clerical staff take care of the transcriptionists.  It is a hard thing to learn as an entrepreneur but delegating is very important.  We are finally seeing her do this, and things are much smoother.  One person simply cannot do it all in a company of this size.  I wouldn't want to own my own company for that reason.  The hours she works would kill me and I would be divorced.  The constant travel of this year would cause most people to take days off after each trip, but I have talked to her hours after she got in from a one-day trip for a meeting to sign a contract and while tired, she is still out there making sure that our jobs are secure.

No one was out to get you or to mess up your life.  I am sure that there is more to the story than you are saying but I find it hard to believe that you were ignored.  I personally talk to each person hired for one of my accounts and make sure that they have all that they need.

If you came during a hectic time and felt you were not treated fairly, on behalf of the company, I apologize.  However, and this is not an excuse, with the growth that Keystrokes has experienced, there are bound to be hectic times and bound to be changes.  I, for one, am glad that the changes make Keystrokes a better place to work.  I hope that someday Keystrokes replaces MQ and Spheris at the top of the national companies and know that if they do not, it is because they refuse to compromise and hurt the transcriptionists.

Life is about choices.  Mine has worked well for me.  We should all help each other rather than carry around so much negativity.

"slander presented on this board by people like you." Sounds like

There are so many hits on the job board for jobs that I wonder if people are qualified that respond
or just send in a resume if they are not.  Would be interesting to hear from some of these companies what type of response they are getting.
The thing to remember about this board is that there are more negative people than positive that pos
The reason is that a lot of MT's have had bad experiences EVERYWHERE they go, if you know what I mean. They then bash the most recent company over and over again.

The same few people seem to have worked everywhere and have something bad to say about every company.

Take everything with a grain of salt on here. It is a gossip board.

The only ones to believe the negativity about are those that do not pay or bounce their payroll checks.

The rest? Well, most are decent companies that might not be a good fit for everyone. There is not much difference between all the bigger ones except whether they send work offshore or not. Otherwise, rates are similar, benefits are similar, work load is similar.
This board is full of nasty , angry, bitter people. Why? sm
With this economic crisis that the entire world is under, we still have jobs that are fairly secure. We have jobs that pay more than minimum wage. We have benefits, unless IC status. We have good work environments, do not have the risk of losing an arm, leg or life in a piece of machinary or being blown up in a mine.

Yes, there are companies that do not pay. Yes, there are companies that do not pay more than 6 cpl, but we have a CHOICE on who to work for. Don't work for them. There are plenty of good companies that treat their employees well.

Christmas bonus? My husband was laid off last week from a job he has had for 27 years. That was his bonus.

Unemployment is at record highs, prices are at record highs and it does not seem to have an end in sight for many years.

Perhaps a depression would show Americans that nothing is free and people would stop standing with their hands out all the time.

As a society, we have come to expect everything to be handed to us. As a transcription professional, it is disheartening to see all the angry, bitter, hateful posts here all the time.

Transcription companies face the same rising costs as every other company out there and I am sure they feel the crunch too, but they are not telling this every second like other industries.

I am not an MTSO, not a manager, not a troll. I am just an MT who is grateful for her job and skills that will allow her family to survive this crisis without scars.
That is completely untrue. Why are people bashing Transcend on the board?
They are a good company, with good people.
so..basically

what I've gathered..

  • MT, like most other professions, is unpredictable.

  • It is possible to make 25k, but not common.

  • Formal training with a program such as Career Step is not a requirement, but it would be an asset.

  • There are other ways for me to become educated in the field besides a formal program.

  • And, finally, you get out of it what you put into it.

I appreciate the advice and insight from all of you.  I will take into consideration when making my decision.  Thanks again.

Basically the same goes for me
The local physicians I work for require me to keep all the notes I transcribe. They're all stored by date. If I didn't keep them, they'd have a lot of missing files. Don't ask me what they do with them, but I print the reports directly to their printers and it never fails (twice today in fact) they're looking for the notes. Sometimes they're looking for notes that I typed 6 months ago.
Basically I'm saying
that if you don't get anywhere with your supervisor, if it bugs you that much and you are suffering for it, go to their supervisor.
Basically happy with MQ.
Line counts okay, too.
It basically means that
you will qualify to submit your finished documents directly to the facility (hospital, doctor's office, etc.) that the account is for instead of having all of your documents go through QA first. I honestly cannot remember what the initials stand for...it's Direct Submission...something...lol.
Where I am it goes basically by what you are paid - sm
The more you make the harder the dictators, though my manager does try to give an equal balance to it all and not nail you will all bad dictators in one day. She assigns out the work (no pool here) and certain awful ones get rotated between a few of us, some I get to avoid completely as others are very proficient at those particular doctors, and ditto for them. I do some docs others hate, but I like to do, and they like some of the docs I hate. On rare occasion I ask her to not give me anyone too awful as I am sick or very tired and she tried to do so, but only if she can. I don't make a habit out of doing that. But absolutely no one except the newbies get easy stuff on a consistant basis. Kind of stinks in a way, but as I said I usually get a 50/50 mix so it is not too bad. That is what your manager should do, and not play blatent favorites, that totally stinks.
That is basically the same conversation i had with them...
Said they would send me info..i got 2 wacked out samples and i asked about acct specifics and they are confused as to what exactly i want. Seems pretty disorganized to me as well!! Thanks for letting me know...much appreciated
You and me both. I basically just clean up
for brand spanking new MTs at one-third of their line rate.  Depressing.  But am making a little money while looking for other jobs.
I think all of these companies are basically the
when someone replies?  No one is anywhere for charity anymore.  Everyone has their hand in the pot these days.  That is just part of life.  If you think for one minute you are going to ask about a company and only receive positives, you're in for a big disappointment.  Why not try the company out for yourself if you are just going to defend them anyway?  It does not hurt to try, but from what I read here, there are MTs who have tried and they were not impressed.  SoftScript has an advertisement almost every week, so what does that tell you?  Rapid expansion? That is a big MAYBE in my opinion.  Different strokes for different folks.  Good luck on whatever you decide including posting here or other boards.  LOL
Right. That's what the article said, basically.
That all correct English is the same, wherever the country:

English in India may have a British hangover but by no means is it vastly different from American English or any other correct English for that matter.

She expects Indians working for American countries to have excellent English ... like hers. If only our visitor could write like that, we wouldn't be appalled.

Its odd, but they are basically a middle man, which
I personally didn't like. It was frustrating at times. Also, in my experience, we got the bottom of the barrel work from the hospital, even more than usual for a national. The pay was low at 8 cpl, which I understand is still the current pay, so I'm sure DiskR gets a big hunk of what the hospital is really paying. Obviously, I know, its business, but it seemed odder than the usual set up of working for a national. I found it would have been more pleasant just working for the hospital, because you are 100% an employee of the hospital and not Diskriter. I just did not care for the whole atmosphere, lots of cherry picking and more than usual politics, but nobody really to turn to, as the hospital didn't want to know from beans, and DR had its own issues. Very  much a stuck in the middle feeling...but not a good one.
This is basically the reason that we have never....sm
been able to attain professional status as language specialists. I did try QA for a while after many years as an MT but could not believe the poor quality of the work I was seeing. It made me ill! This never would have been tolerated back in the day. No one would have even dared to apply for a position as an MT if they, at a minimum, couldn't pass a simple grammar test. Even the simple things as in this case, there vs their, tense errors, just no basic English (American) language skills. I do not see it getting better unless people are required to show they know the basics before they are hired.
Which basically reads is
that the sorority sisters at AAMT don't care about you, never did.
Basically, same experience...

I worked there for a while as an employee doing ER reports.  I basically had the same experience as you regarding management pressure and unexplained line count deficiencies.

Regarding Karen, there was an MT on my account with this name.  The manager that we had for ER accounts was a new manager who came over from Medware (I think that was the name) and Karen was a pet who followed her over from there.  There were a lot of people who followed that manager, and, of course, they were the ones who always had work when work ran low.  Unfortunately, I wasn't one of those pets.  I ended up leaving and I'm very happy that I did.

But basically you are only speaking for yourself
I read your posting above and wondered if you dislike it so much, why do it? Is there not another job you can do besides this because the way it looks most companies are headed towards VR. I will make almost $190 today on the VR I work on and I am totally loving it. I would not be unhappy if I did not, would find another business.
Basically, does she owe anyone else money? nm
nm
I talked to a Transolutions MT and basically
she was happy with the company. I try to find out as much as I can about a company when I interview, just to file away for future reference. She was looking for part-time work, and actually said she would recommend them. So.......who knows?
