Serving Over 20,000 US Medical Transcriptionists

I saw some post from months back that they stated

they were very strict with the schedule.  the schedule you give them is the one you have to work.

Phoenix Medcom- Another apply a few months back, ask to take a test and never heard back??
I applied a month or two ago, received an email from someone asking if I would take a test and said she was getting ready to go on vacation for a week, so I hurried and immediately and told her I'd love to take the test. I never heard back. I waiting thinking she went on vacation and would contact me when she got back to do the test but nothing...very strange..Just wondered if this happened to anyone else.
As I stated in my post,

I was trained by a mentor.  She had, at at time, over 25 years' experience in the field, about nine years ago.  I have no idea what they teach about this in the classroom, but I suppose my answer would have to be that it was chiseled in stone.  LOL!!!

However, just for you, I found this information provided in the BOS2:

In an independent benchmarking study of the MT profession conducted in 1999 by the Hay Management Consultants (HayGroup), three distinct professional levels for medical transcriptionists were identified and described.

The first item listed for the Professional Level 3 states, Recognized as possessing expert knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, disease processes, signs and symptoms, medications, and laboratory values related to a specialty or specialties.

Level 2 refers to the same knowledge, but as seasoned rather than expert.

Level 1 refers to the same knowledge, but as basic rather than expert or seasoned.

I would think that an expert level, even a seasoned level, would include available dosages and what the medications are used to treat, wouldn't you?

Does this mean you have to know this?  No, I don't think so, but I would also think the transcriptionists with expert and seasoned knowledge earn more than those with basic knowledge.

Hope this helps!

As stated in the Sten Tel post below
The person who asked this question, I think, asked about Sten Tel because of the job ads in the jobs section of this site. This ad was posted by Sten Tel in MA. She wants to know about this particular company because they have job openings.

She is not referring to the Sten Tel platform.
good guesses, but none of what you stated in your post
I don't believe anything that was said was directed to YOU personally - it is SoftScript that is the JOKE, not you.

I, for one, am glad that you are happy where you're at not all companies are a good fit for all MTs and we all know that.

I speak for myself, with over 35 yrs experience. Personally my time at SoftScript was anything but pleasant and, again, from my point of view if you are willing to put up with J and H more power to you!!

Have a Great Day ALL, and a safe 4th of July!!

UMMM - I'm not at work, no need to correct as I stated below, I know post had errors.nm
nm
good guesses, but none of what you stated in your post....i rest my case though, you people
ARE TRULY NASTY.......nothing short of a JERRY SPRING remake here....i simply said that SoftScript was wonderful and so far, i've been told i'm a joke, insulted, called names, etc.......now lets see if anyone has anything nice to say......as if that were possible on this board.............
ooops. I mean that individual plans suck..not stick as I stated in previous post...NM

Come back in 8 months and tell us how well you

She said she would contact me back but never did. 4 months later, still nothing.

I did the same thing about 6 months ago but am back at sm
Keystrokes again FT. I don't think they are allowing PT (KS) anymore either, so might want to check that first. What type of work do you do?

It was a big mistake for me as it is an IC position. The so-called raise actually cost me more in the long run with taxes. I was making 0.11, which was actually less than the 0.09 that I have at Keystrokes when I counted everyone in.

Just be careful and make sure that you are doing the right thing. A friend of mine left Keystrokes and now they are not rehiring her even though she has been trying for three months! They finally told her to give it up, that she would never be eligible for rehire because of a few things, but she learned a hard lesson.
I tested with them a few months back...sm
I don't recall having any equipment issues, however. You really should contact whoever your recruiter is and let them know before you proceed. I actually failed their transcription test by 1/2 a lousy point and I've been an MT for over 18 years!! They wouldn't tell me what I missed. I am getting ready to test with them again. All I've heard are positive things about this company.

I probably didn't help you very much, but know how frustrating it can be to post and have absolutely no resplies. From what I remember about their testing is that you aren't penalized for blanks, so don't take any chances with guessing. I would assume this works with their equipment as well.

Good luck to you! Keep us posted on how you do!

WebMedX-wannabe
I remember the big stink a few months back

and what's her name from TRS got all huffy and said how they were just trying to teach a trade to these poor people so they could earn a decent living, that they weren't taking U.S. jobs away.  I don't know why they thought we were dumb enough that we wouldn't realize that it wouldn't do any good to teach them a trade if there was no way to practice their trade.  I too thought it took a lot of balls to advertise for the overseas person.

There were several companies that were supportive of this, I don't remember all of them, but Cymed was one of them.

Took 3-4 wks. a few months ago to hear back after testing. I was already in a new job by then. nm
s
Search the archives back for the few months.

There' s lots of info on SoftScript.  In my opinion, not a good place to work and I'm glad I didn't accept their offer.

took their test and waited for eight months to hear back from then sm
by that time I had two different jobs.  No the eight months is NOT A TYPO
The company I work for went to VR a few months back. I was as terrified as you are. sm
It has been OK. I like doing the VR work, and my check is really no different than it was before the change. I do a lot more in terms of production in the same amount of time.

The downside is that the increased production, even though in the same timeframe, is taking its toll on me. It is stressful.

If you get an easy report that has very few edits, you will fly through it. If you get one that is full of errors, it will take you longer than typing it from scratch.

It's a catch-22 in that we really don't have a choice but the good news is that my pay has not suffered and my hands are not as tired.
I was offered a job months back, but the contract said they docked for errors.
Not my cup of tea! I never was docked pay for making a med error as a nurse. I would not have accepted that kind of treatment. I'm human, for crying in the corn, not a machine.
I could have written your post. A few months

ago my company, where I had been for more than 5 years began having issues.  I started looking around, sent in resumes, posted my resume on the job boards.  I got at least a dozen job offers.  Most I eliminated due to too low of a cpl or was being offered clinic when I wanted acute care.  I narrowed it down to 2 companies.  I accepted a position with one of them, but then the next day I changed my mind because I had been with the same company for so long.  I was familiar with my doctors, my platform, I was left alone to do my work, had all the work I could handle, etc.   The fear of having to start all over again terrified me, so despite the issues I decided to stay and ride it out.  The company went belly up a few months after that and I didn't have a choice but to make a change then.

There is no guarantee company #1 will still be in business five years from now.  There is no guarantee company #2 will be in business five years from now.  If you are very happy at job #1 you wouldn't be considering job #2.  For me the money itself wouldn't be enough to make be change.

You could try both for a short time to give you a feel of whether changing companies would be a good more or whether the extra money just isn't worth it to leave your comfort zone.

Maybe going to job #2 will be the best thing you ever did or maybe you'll regret it for a long time to come.  Unfortunately you are the only one who can make the decision.  If you don't take job #2 you may always have regrets or the what ifs.  If you take job #2 you might be kicking yourself for months wondering why in the world did you even consider changing because you really had it pretty good at job #1.

I know I haven't helped you decide, which wasn't my purpose.  I just wanted to give my view point, which is most likely different than yours because it doesn't personally involve me.  It is always easier to tell someone else what they should/should not do than it is to make the same decisions for yourself.

Good luck in whatever you decide.

This could have been my post, but I was only there 3 months & left for same reasons. nm

WHOA! Let's back up here. First off, I don't post anywhere....
like I "do here" until somebody keeps trying to dig. I thought I was plenty clear in my initial post that I am flexible on my hours, working when the work is there and asking for different accounts as I said. That means that when the OT is there, I don't shy away from it and am willing to work when the work is there to be done. I do NOT take work away from other MTs. If the work is low, I work my regular hours, but in this business the work is so fluctutant, especially at this time of the year, that it's rather easy to get the lines "with flexibility."

If I came off as "with an attitude," it was only because I felt YOU were trying to find out if I was one of those who "steals" lines or in some way trying to find out more than I felt was yours to know. I Just thought, however, that my initial post was pretty concise.

As I stated earlier, flexibility of hours, plus a LOT of shortcuts and whole texts into the shortcut file helps. Familiarity with an account always leads to higher lines. There is always a learning curve for any job or any account and its dictators, so that is definitely a factor. "Ruth" who posted above summarized what I had said in my initial post and that I thought was clear.

It really boils down to the basics of being a productive MT, I suppose. Is this what you want to know?????????
Go back and read her post!
I'm not real sure what else there is to let people in on.
I just went back and read that other post
Sadly, those posters are 100% correct. What they describe is the treatment I am getting. I am disheartened. I am looking for another pasture too. They are a terribly selfish company, it is just not right what they do to the MTs who work for them.

This is my opinion based on my experience. I can relate to what others say about SGS.
Has anyone ever left Keystrokes and gone back? I left a few months ago and realize that I made a

TransTech and low/no work for months and months _ don't think there are continous holidays LOL

This HORRIBLE low/no work situation has been going on at TT for almost a year now.  You can't convince me it is due to Memorial Day.  Are holidays now assigned in this world to being daily.

That is an excuse these companies use in these no work situations, but it is due to their OVERHIRING.  Holidays just come on a daily basis, but LOW WORK/NO WORK is happening and has happened going on a year now at TransTech.  Always asking to flex into the middle of the night, EVERY weekend, etc.

The TT mgmt checks are NEVER affected, tho, so they can continue to HIRE EVERY MT who gives them a call, and create a NO WORK situation for all of us.  The newbie MT's are cheering at first, but then realize that it hit them in the paycheck, too, and very soon it did!!!!!!!

My company has been low on work for months and months..sm
Tired of getting the same ol' message that things will pick up.  I remember the days of bonuses, making money and being able to pay my bills!  I am also wondering what is going with these companies not having work.  Is everybody sending work overseas?
Could the KS RAD MT who stated
below that she has been at Keystrokes for 2 years and makes good money define what good money is? I would like to make sure there is plenty of work to make $$$.
someone stated... c msg
IC only, no benefits, paid by the minute.
I stated
at the beginning of the test that it was not timed and was open book.
Sorry...should have been *It* stated

Please know, as I stated above -
that a USB may NOT be what is required in a job.  There are also 9-serial port and 15-serial port pedals.  All companies are different and have different requirements.  I'd hate for you to buy something you don't need.
I had stated it would not keep them from getting
a job for sure and yes, you are right about the chuckle...but I definitely would love to see a little more professionalism in this field. I think people would take the field more seriously with more professionalism amongst all of us though a few laughs do make the job more interesting. :)
As stated below, have been here for almost

it's stated on both ads.. looks low to me

WOW! VERY well stated!
This is an excellent letter. You made some very valid points, didn't lose your cool and I think you prevailed in your argument. You succeeded in pointing out to AHDI themselves their glaring inconsistencies. I am so proud of you for having the courage to write this and share it with us.
Well stated! sm

You took the words right out of my mouth.  I am not yet a CMT but am going to take the exam before the end of the year.

I have a friend who is an ER physician.  He has no respect for what MTs do, primarly because his reports are riddled with errors by MTs who 1.  Don't care or 2.  Do care but do not have the skills to produce an accurate medical record.

Either way, MTs are sometimes viewed as low-skilled labor that is easily replaced.  Credentialing can only help to undo some of the damage that has been done to our profession in the past few years.

Again, this is just my opinion.  Please don't flame me if you do not agree with my views.  We're all in this together and want the same thing.  More respect and ultimately more money.  Most of us work because we have to.

Well stated. You get what you pay for...SM
We're talked down to by MTSOs and QA and expected to turn out perfect work while at the same time wages are going lower and lower.  What workers in any other line of work would stand for this?  Would they care?
FT only, which is usually stated in their ads.
Usually have 2 accounts.  The schedule depends on the account, but with KS and most all companies now the schedules run Tu-Sa or Su-Th.  If clinic work may not be required to work weekend.
I worked in QA for Transcending back in 2000-2001. They were paying hourly back then. SM

The accounts weren't too horribly bad.  The reason I ended up leaving was because slowly but surely they began to inch closer and closer to paying QA by production.  When I first started, the quota was something like 30 reports a day.   We simply had to make sure that we QA'd all reports that were close to being out of TAT first and then do the rest.  Then, my supervisor left and they hired a new one who immediately called a big teleconference meeting and said we had to up production to 60 reports a day.  Then, they started counting lines.  Which was fine because they were still paying hourly.

Next, there was an MT who used VR software because she was blind - yes blind.  Again, when I first started, I was told we had to edit her entire reports because she used the VR software and we had to make sure that everything was correct and made sense.  Then, we are told only check the blanks.  I wasn't comfortable with that and I continued to completely proof every word.  Then I was called on the carpet not because I wasn't meeting the production quota, but because I was ONLY meeting the production quota.  I told them I was proofing all of the MT's work that used VR, I was told that no one ever told me to proof every word of the VR reports and that I needed to fill in blanks and move on.  When I voiced my concerns, I was told that was my job, to fill in blanks and I should move on and strive to product above the standards.  Next thing you know, rumors abounded about changing the QA staff to being paid on production.  So I left.

There just seemed to me to be too little concern for quality and more emphasis on quantity and I just didn't want to be part of company who would take money out of my pocket just to line their own and that's what they were doing by putting QA on production.  I also am not comfortable with the job of QA being thought of as a blank filler.  There is much more to the QA profession than just simply filling in blanks.

I don't know if Transcend ever did start paying QA by production, but I could see that the idea was being floated there.  Maybe there was a enough protest that they didn't change from hourly.

Good luck to you!

I saw their ad on MTdaily and the ad stated
something about offshoring resumes ...sounded like they welcome both USA and offshore. So 2cpl is not good for two reasons:

1) Because its 2 cents/line
2) If they welcome offshore resumes, then they probably are offshoring accounts, which means you will end up retyping JUST ABOUT ALL OF THE REPORTS, thus, making no money.

Beautifully stated!!!!
There is something going on, they are outsourcing and there are money problems.
in the ss website, it stated...
no equipment costs and that
they provided all the necessary equipment for effortless setup.

so i was shocked (and fell for it) when i was told to purchase the pedal/program.

i am one and have stated my reasons why
this board is mainly for complainers.

if any poster has something good to say about a company, they are practically dismembered by angry mobs of posters.

who even knows how many actually DIFFERENT posters there are? who cares?! lol

i don't see a union ever for MT work. i see aamt watering down their own organization.

i doubt a cmt certification would help much at all, just do it for personal satisfaction.

this field will never be regulated so it won't matter.

jmho
and as I stated in a posting to someone above--sm
perhaps they should ask your company to post the names of all who were hired...as if it is any of their business, anyway...geez, I just don't understand some of these people.
The new PT job I have stated today they had others from MQ (sm)

joining them.  I said sorry, we are all trying to cover our financial bases/asses.  His response was bring em on.

It is clearly stated in their ad on the job board. n,m

It was stated the way she meant it.

I am sure that she meant exactly what she said.  It could have been stated in a more professional, courteous way.

There is no reason that people should be so RUDE all the time.  I guess it makes her feel like she is somebody or something.

YaaaayyYYY!! Very well stated
Thanks for the kick in the butt:)
