I just messed up on a verbal test - sm

I cannot believe how badly I did. I completely froze on the questions for meanings of ostial/osteal, ileum/ilial. I feel like such an idiot! I'm pretty sure I answered everything else correctly, but those sound alikes always get me, and I always have to pull out my Dorland's. I'm fairly certain I blew this one.

Has anyone taken the verbal mini-test
Is it very difficult? I don't do well with these types of tests. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
IMO I would rather have a verbal test on the phone
than one of those two hour web tests before you talk to the company only to find out you passed with flying colors and they offer you 6 cents a line.
Verbal test for Spheris
but not Medware. When I called the Spheris (Edix) recruiter I was surprised by the verbal pop quiz, wasn't expecting it. I worked for Medware last year and I don't recall the test. The worst are the online tests that you have to use your keyboard for rewind/play...a total PITA, very awkward.
Their verbal test was not hard at all. I was amazed
really that it was as easy as it was because when she said she was giving a phone test, I panicked. I received a job offer a day later and gladly accepted it as they sound like a very nice company.
Webmedx did a verbal test when I applied last year (sm)
The tester/interviewer was very pleasant and apologized for poor sound quality due to her using a head set (which she continued to use) during the testing. You could barely hear her and I had a bad feeling about the quality of transcription from this and turned the job down.
That is good you messed up then - awful co

The PC check also messed with my keyboard,
could not use some shortcut buttons, had to reinstall the keyboard driver CD that came with it and then it worked fine again, hopefully you have one for yours, otherwise you can most likely find the driver for it on the web somewhere. Haven't noticed any problems otherwise from the PC check program.
VR and messed up medical records
I agree. I have a friend who asked me to look at his medical record that he obtained from the hospital and I found a lot of mistakes that would not be made had they not used VR and the MT Editor had not missed those mistakes. Like lists. Instead of a vertical list, it runs the list altogether. Impression 1,2,3 and 4 are in one big paragraph. No punctuation, words run together. Yes, there will be lawsuits.
Messed up how? Facts to back this?

My guess is someone messed up the pool scripts sm
which determines how the work is routed. I had work until about 1 on my primary and then moved over to my secondary and scraped together the last 200 lines. For the last 3 weeks I have been running out on my primary at 9:30 in the morning.
You are really reaching. We're all messed up if it passes.

The HR person took files with her and really messed things up when she left. She was sm
the rudest person I have ever talked to, and Keystrokes is much better off without her.
You're right! Hahaha My typo totally messed up the meaning!
Yes, MQ is aware of my other position. I was very up front with them when I took their offer. Spheris probably would not be happy about my situation, I agree.
My other comments were made because no matter what I post, someone has got to be interested in what I'm doing or not doing, whether they think it is right or not, etc.
My whole post on this thread was an answer about great companies. I posted. Then, if you'll go back and look at this entire thread, I am the one getting all the virtual "you can't do that" complainers on my back.
It's not anyone else's business. One of the OPs started it I suppose with the trying to tell me I can't post on this forum because I work for Spheris and I can't use their computer. Then others chime in. Then others start in with what they think I can and cannot do.
It's none of anyone's business. I wasn't addressing any of those subjects whatsoever.
I seem to be prime fuel for the flaming activities, regardless of the subject of my posts. Even if I respond to others, 9 times out of 10 I get flamed and for other subject matter most of those times.
Hahaha, you are right in your answers to some of the other posters. You and I are having an adult conversation and understanding each other well, even if we disagree. THAT is how it should be.
As I answered you somewhere in this same thread, I understand what you were bringing to light for others who may not realize about working for more than 1 company. It is a gamble. I agree wholeheartedly.
It isn't just the competition between Spheris and MQ though. That expectation is with other companies as well, maybe not all, but most. And most, if you read the employee handbook imply that they do not want their employees on forums like this.
One of the OPs stated that I signed a contract with Spheris forbidding me to be on this forum. No ma'am. That simply isn't true. I went back and looked at everything I've signed. I've signed no such contract. There may be an implied policy but I have not signed any such contract.
I personally think that each company has really good aspects. I can also see where each could improve. That will be with any company though. As long as I am well paid and have flexibility and opportunity, I'm a happy clam.
only verbal from an employee there nm

Verbal testing
Verbal testing is so much better. Years before people with no idea of transcription came to me with their tapes, like I would do that, NOT. If you say you are an acute care Transcriptionist you better know the standard dose of Coumadin, the most common incision used in hysterectomies, just simple stuff that all MTs would know. If you are letting these people cheat, you know, garbage in - garbage OUT.
Verbal testing.....
They do testing on the phone to weed out people who don't know the first thing about MT. Many people think because they work in a doctor's office as a receptionist or a medical assistance that they are qualified to do MT.
Your reasoning regarding the transcription quality at WMX based on the recruiter's phone line quality was faulty at best. I've been at WMX for a year and their sound files are wonderful.
Do you like where you are now? If note, give WMX another shot. It's a good place to work.
Broken promises, messed up pay, endless drama. Good riddance!

Usually a spelling test, a punctuation test, and maybe 3-6 test files to do. Sometimes done using

Verbal testing on the phone
Would someone be able to tell me what companies verbally test applicants on the phone? I thought I had read somewhere that Medware and Amphion did that, but I could be wrong.
Transhealth, they do written and verbal,
x
Do they have both a written and verbal testing process? Thank you. nm

verbal tests also show what you do when you aren't sure
I had 2 sound alikes with different meaning out of all the questions asked. On those 2, I nailed the first meaning but wasn't sure of the second because I was nervous. They (meaning any company who does verbal tests) expect a certain amount of that in a verbal exam. I admitted that off hand, the answer didn't come to my head and I would have to look it up to be certain. I probably would not have gotten a call back if I had just guessed and gotten it wrong or didn't say I would like it up because then they would think I would throw in words into a document that didn't fit and it would show I didn't care. They want to know what you aren't sure of, too, and if you care to find out the answers.
Cheating/verbal tests and cost per line.
I am sorry to hear this wonderful recruiter being called a cheater. I have been in this business for about 25 years, and I will take whatever help/advice I can get. Yes, I am in the transcription business to help people but I am also in it to help support my family. I'll take short cuts, macros, whatever it will take to increase my lines and if getting into a company that is willing to give a helping hand, a cue, a hint, whatever - I say thank you. In the end, if you do take pride in your work, the terminology will come to you in the actual report, and I bet the next time you hear those particular terms you have trouble with on the test, you will remember them. You will remember affect and effect. You will learn intra and inter because somebody's health may depend on it. Too bad for you.....
Verbal tests show the information that is in your head.
There is nothing wrong with a company that does this and if someone flunked that portion of the test and passed the other portions, I would think that portion weighed more heavily because we are supposed to utilize our knowledge of MT also, not just the things we have to look up in reference material. We must know what we are doing, hence the reason for verbal testing.
I personally wish more companies did that. The ability to think is a big part of being a good MT. I say two thumbs up for TransHealth for testing that ability.
Okay, here is how a recruiter who is a friend of mine explained verbal tests to me.
Verbal tests are to give the recruiter a feel of what that MT knows off the top of their head. Not all people get nervous at verbal tests but a good recruiter has the insight to know if a wrong answer or lack of an answer is from not knowing or is from just being nervous. A verbal test is done just to get a feel for the the off the top knowledge of an MT plus you know that MT is taking it. This recruiter is also an MT and having gone through so many tests the long hard way decided this was the lesser of the evils. She did tell me though if she felt that MT knew their stuff and just could not respond because of nervousness that she noted that and just by a general conversation based on experience would not flunk someone like that. Lenghty tests prove very little except that an MT has been working for companies that all have different ways of style and that she felt that was not right to an MT; as well having to take tests that are hours long after an MT has been working long hours is also not fair to the MT. And my friend told me that in many cases there are MTs that literally have other MTs take their testing for them and you would not know it until that person starts the job. It depends on the recruiter and their knowledge of the industry. Each recruiter or company has their own way and usually they find the way that works best for them. I personally find that many recruiters just have no knowledge of the industry (inside knowledge) and it annoys me that someone like that is allowed to even have the opportunity to interview and test me. I can remember one with a company up north and their idea of punctuation was way too much. It should not have been an issue unless it changed the meaning of the report but had they gone by the Book of Style they would not have added those 20 or so commas throughout the 4 reports that they had me transcribe. I passed but when you have been in this industry for over 15 years and are being judged by someone that has not and who has not been in your MT dancing shoes then something about that just does not seem right. Anyway I doubt there really is a best way to do anything, but if I had my choice, I would prefer the way that is the shortest. Time is precious and for the rates they pay nowadays those tests are just too lengthy to go through that for a whopping 7 cents a line. No thank you. I'll chance my nerves over all that.
I took a test for a company and my foot pedal would work with the test and I had keep going back
over the dictation time and again to get all the words because I couldnt stop and start it by the foot pedal. What can I do about this.
Just took the test myself. No actual dictation to transcribe. Just a written test.
For 13 cpl, I might do it if the dictators aren't a total horror.
I just took the test today - thought it was a great test of MT skills.

There is no written test. Must have been a different company. I took their ortho test sm
and it was easy. You had to know your terminology but it was easy to understand AND I used my foot pedal.
Is the test through mttest.com a timed test? Thanks. nm
MQ Test
How long does it take MedQuist to get back to applicants once they have completed the test?? It has been a week for me now and have heard nothing. Is that good or bad???? TIA
What are they asking you to do? What is the test?
MTStars? Maybe there are some posts that may tell you something.
Took their test once.
Short ER test. Easy as it gets. They claimed I didn't pass their test and was therefore unqualified to work for them.
After doing MT for 10+ years at some of the top medical centers in the country (including currently) and ERs for 3+ years, it was obvious they were screwed up pretty bad.
test
try windows media thats what i had to do

Has anyone taken a test using
on MT Test are using Cscribe. I think it stinks, but maybe a foot pedal would help. Thanks.
I did a test for them.........sm
I did a test file for this company. I never heard back from them. The lady said they required 98% to pass. I know I didn't get 98% because I had to rush through the fairly large test file, and I was working for MQ. With my job at MQ there were some strange requirements that I carried into those reports without time to check the BOS. However, after working about 4 hours on the test file they never even had the courtesy to reply. I do not think that this is professional, JMO.

I took their test.
I did AWFUL. I'm not sure why. I've taken dozens of other employer tests and got anywhere from a 96 to a 100 on ALL of them. On Medware's test I got a 43 out of 50, which is basically an 86. I can't understand it!! It didn't seem that difficult, if I recall, and I've done so well on everyone else's test. Needless to say, I didn't get offered a job. LOL!
I did take the test,
but at the time I was offered a position with another company that I decided to take. I have over 25 years of experience in this business. The test is not timed and it is open book. They tell you that at the beginning. You may think it is over the top, and that may be true; however, they may be wanting to see just how good we (as MTs) are at doing research and such. I'm not saying I agree with the test, I'm just saying that each company has their own way of doing things. If you want the job, you have to do what it takes to get it.
Did you take the test?
.
How did you do on the test?
.
So, how did you do on the test?
.
I took their test also.
They told me I didn't pass either. I requested to see what mistakes I made and wanted to know what my test score was, and they never told me even after sending several emails to them asking for this information.
I wanted to see what mistakes I made as I didn't have any problem taking their test at all, and I don't understand it.
Test???
I haven't had to take a test with them. I applied through the job seekers board here, got a call the next day, offered the job and was told they would be send me the Lanier system and my lead would get in touch with me on Wednesday when she gets back from training on this new account. I hope there isn't a test, I don't like tests, please don't make me take a test, I don't wanna, I don't wanna. LOL.
I never got to take the test but
another poster gave me some very helpful information on who to talk to when I call, which was very much appreciated.
I took the test but not sure it went thru..

DRC test
Yes, it's difficult if you don't have the required experience. No reference books allowed. Tester will also ask you questions which you will have to answer off the top of your head. If you don't know your stuff, it's hard to fake it. Not trying to discourage you from testing -- just being honest with you.
Test.
I agree. Back when we had to fax tests, I would have a job offer on my answering machine by the time I returned home. Not bragging, really not. Been doing this for close to 20 years, better be able to pass tests. On my tests I will transcribe verbatim but point out troubling points. I.E. One time dictated: Spinal cord removed. I put it but put an * and put I hate to type this, but this is what he said. Companies take notice of that.
