There are probably lots of MTs still down due to Katrina and Rita.
Don't believe weather can't impact your life in a big way. Be prepared to know what your options are with your job.

That happened to me numerous times with numerous companies. sm
I understand how you feel and what you are going through. I have been there myself many times. It is very frustrating. Keep your chin up and keep looking. There are companies out there where you can just do OP Reports, but you need to find them. Tomorrow will be brighter!
It is exhausting, but you will find a perfect fit soon enough.
She/they were emailed numerous times by numerous MTs
Welcoming emails and actually responding to those emails are apparently two entirely different things.
Numerous times I have been told our wages are lower because
we are now competing with (almost third-world) countries, who think 2 and 3 cents a line is a LOT. Therefore, to stay competitive, we must now work for a lower wage.
There are times there have been actual threats that we would lose our accounts, if we do not comply as hospitals would just take their accounts overseas.
Leaves a lot of room for corruption, i.e., whether it is true the hospitals would actually go that route (I think they might, considering CBay and how huge they are) or whether it is the MTSO duping us into accepting lower pay.
We are in a similar situation as in the 1800s (Funny you can almost substitute these people with 'MTs' and 'India', if you know what I mean:
(From Wikipedia) ...between 1830 and 1850, as the Industrial Revolution gave way to the Second Industrial Revolution, sweatshop production of inexpensive clothing displaced members of the tailors guild, and replaced them with lower-skilled workers performing piece work at lower wages and in inferior conditions. The trend away from tailors was accelerated by the advent of a practical, foot-powered sewing machine in 1846.
The terms sweater for the middleman and sweating system for the process of subcontracting piecework were used in early critiques like Charles Kingsley's Cheap Clothes and Nasty, written in 1850. The workplaces created for the sweating system were called sweatshops, and variously comprised workplaces of only a few workers, or as many as 100 or more.
In the sweatshop of 1850, the role of the sweater as middleman and subcontractor (or sub-subcontractor) was considered key, because he served to keep workers isolated in small workshops. This isolation made workers unsure of their supply of work, and unable to organize against their true employer through collective bargaining. Instead, tailors or other clothing retailers, would subcontract tasks to the sweater, who in turn might subcontract to another sweater, who would ultimately engage workers at a piece rate for each article of clothing or seam produced. Many critics asserted that the middleman made his profit by finding the most desperate workers, often women and children, who could be paid an absolute minimum. While workers who produced many pieces could earn more, less productive workers earned so little that critics termed their pay starvation wages. Employment was risky: injured or sick workers would be quickly replaced by others.
There you have it...Nothing will most likely be done until there is another type of revolution in this country.
Mandatory extra hours?? How many?
nm
last year I was down quite a few times because of
evacuations. Just decided to move out of Florida instead.
Only 4 times a year??
That's not very much work being audited. I don't see how the company is so great if people are finding it difficult to reach 1200 lines in 3 months. It doesn't sound like their platform is very good.
A few times a year? I think that's normal for this industry. nm.
.
My boss waited a year or more a few times. Scary. -nm

I live in NY and emailed them svl times last year with no reply. They may

This seems to be the trend now. I have had to change jobs 3 times this year
due to this very fact. I'm at my third one now, and it is still happening. I've decided to just work 2 jobs. One part time and the other supposedly full time, but it is like a part time. The only reason I am staying at the third is because, I need the insurance, and changing between jobs before the 90 day probation has landed me without insurance, as I have had to change jobs before the 90 days are up.
I worked for them a year or so ago. Good company. Owners a little quirky at times, but set sm..
set accounts so can build speed with repetition. Pay on time and treat you very decent.
No, it's not. 3.385 hours per pay period for your first year and then it
goes up from there. I think it ranges from a low end of 11 days in year one to like 25 days after 10 years. Just call them and ask.
What they mean is that your PTO hours do not start to accrue until you've been there a year. The

A lot of times, if they need extra help, they will over 1-1/2 times our regular rate. sm
This is the equivalent of OT but you get it even if you have not done 40 hours already. I have also received AmerExp gift cards a few times for incentives offered. I think it depends on the account.
I do know for sure that they are working on an incentive program but I have no details and not even sure if they are still looking at it.
I do know for sure that I make more $$ with Keystrokes than I have ever made anywhere else.
I think there are numerous "nm"
that come on here. How do we know who is who?
numerous accounts
Yes - I definitely have the same problem. I have a few different accounts, all with different styles (i.e. DO NOT number medications, number medications always, or number medications only if they say it). Stuff like that and it is very hard to keep them all straight...
KS has numerous accounts on....sm
many different platforms so I don't see how this question can honestly be answered. And there's no way of knowing which accounts they are hiring for until the time that you actually talk to the recruiter/HR.
I also see how one MT will love a platform that makes another MT pull their hair out!
So bottom line is, I don't think there is a definitive answer to the question!
I see the numerous complaints on here
This is pertaining to work, not my home life but pretty much of a recluse because that is how I like it, love being able to do what I want and when I want. People gripe on here about their companies. I like the place I work for, have no complaints. Most can say we are all in this together. Not me. Others can get lawsuits, try to hold MTSOs responsible for every little thing going wrong in their lives, have at it. Ok, I don’t really live for myself, I have animals around here also that I care for, how about that? Hubs is pretty special also but other than that, work is way down on my priority list.
Numerous posts below and in the last few weeks.

That is where numerous Spheris MT's are moving. They are getting a very
There is message board made of Spheris employees, which now has recruiters from Webmedx on encouraging people to quit Spheris. Believe me, Spheris is no bed of roses, but going on another company's board is hitting pretty low.

I don't know anything about the other company.

YES! I will get numerous reports from the same ugly dictator
8 times in one night -- these H&P's being 6 plus hours old, and each dictated with plenty of time in between, my knowing that there were other dictators dictating in between his -- so know that they have been holding them for me after the day shift gets off. They don't delay H&P's getting out for this many hours, so it is so very obvious what is taking place. I don't like companies manipulating the system for their favorites.
I absolutely despise this practice by a company.
Funny, I've been there 8 yrs and thru numerous new accounts sm
and I'm STILL HERE WORKING FULL-TIME! I know last year there was a problem with hiring too many people before a couple of accounts started, but it isn't like that now.
Bare minimum? I make over $50,000 a year in 40 hours a week. That is not bare minimum. sm
Bare minimum would be $8 an hour which is $16,640 a year or $10 an hour which is $20,800 a year. I make more than twice that and that is NOT bare minimum.
I worked to get my typing speed to 80 wpm. I worked to get my Expanders user-friendly and plentiful. I am not the fastest because I look up what I do not know, but I am lucky to have a very good memory so if I type it a few times, I do not have to look it up. I keep notes when I run across something I do not know. I am interested in my profession and read the magazines for our profession and network with other transcriptionists during my free time, devoting a minimum of 2 hours per week to networking and learning new things.
I am not the fastest MT, but I am accurate and boiled it down to simple math. I need to transcribe 250 lines per hour for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. At 10cpl, that is 2000 lines a day x 5 days per week x 50 weeks per year. I take 2 weeks off per year during July to visit my grandchildren (unpaid), 1 week a year to vacation with my husband (paid) and 1 week a year to spring clean (paid). I have worked for the same company for 4 years and 8 years for the one before this.
I treat my work hours as work hours and take 1/2 hour for lunch which I do not include in my 8 hours. I pretend that I am working outside the home and do not answer the door, get the mail, do laundry, etc. If I have a good day and go over the 2000, I bank it in my mind for days that are not as good and make sure that I get 10,000 lines each week.
My W2 each year is consistently $50,000. A few years it was higher, but I worked a few weekends, which I no longer do.
It IS possible.
They can't afford to bother you. You are too busy toggling between numerous screens in

typos on this board are to be forgiven, but new company's numerous errors and the picture they
painted for our first impression of someone in whom we are required to put practically our entire life details in an email back to them left much to be desired in my opinion (by this MT).
Mandatory OT...
I just needed to rant that I am sick of Mandatory OT when I am IC AND typed 1400 lines in a day. There is no pay differential for this overtime until after 1700 lines that day.
Yup...mandatory OT bit the big one.
Glad I'm done with that!
Mandatory overtime
Yes as of a few months ago when I was there they had mandatory overtime. I think it is better for a company to offer incentive. Mandatory overtime is on a par with home slave.
Yep, working and mandatory OT
I love it!!!
Mandatory OT Amphion
You must be on the account with Drs. P, K, et. al. Been there done that. Mandatory OT should be compensated. It costs us money to rearrange our schedules. I exited giving my input and it looks like nothing I had to say made any difference. e-mail me if you like.
Can anyone say if they still have Mandatory overtime??? nm
s
Amphion mandatory OT
When I worked there, the mandatory OT consisted of horrible dictators that the in-house MTs did not want to do. If you were making line rate before mandatory OT, you would quickly fall into the pit with mandatory OT. Also demographics on some accounts are a nightmare. Doesn't mandatory overtime make one a home slave?
Mandatory overtime would keep me FAR away from them. nm
s
Mandatory OT? Is that even legal?
x
I thought it was going to become mandatory
That all physicians would have to go to EMR by the year 2010.
Sorry, I work 15 hours a day 5 days a week and 5 hours the other 2, when I come here I dont proof.
nm
Diskriter used to make it mandatory that
a Transcriptionist with less than 3 years experience was not to be hired. Now they are dropping their standards to 2 years, no voice testing, etc. They do have a large turnover
Wow! What horrible place is this?!! Mandatory OT??? Ugh...nm
s
401K isn't elective but mandatory?
That's highly unusual and a new one!
They used to have mandatory overtime. Can anyone address this? nm

Used to start off at 7.4 cpl and they had Mandatory Overtime! Don't know

Plus Transtech has lots of OT - non-mandatory

Some accts. might still be on the DOS software here. And mandatory OT

Mandatory Line Counts
Just call me toad breath! LOL
Why would they give you a choice of 16 or 24 hours. Usually part time is anything under 37 hours.
That is extremely odd. Well they must have something up their sleeves. Well I will be working elsewhere part time as well as with MQ as I have no intention of sitting 40 hours with no work from Amherst and be expected to have 150 lph with no work. What is all this window of work time they said they would be giving everyone. I figured all along they would do away with SE. I have already been looking around and ordered a new computer to send theirs back.
Any companies that allow line count rather than hours or less than 20 hours per week? (sm)
Wouldn't mind having something extra especially with Christmas and general winter expenses coming up but working a FT job and really don't want to do another 20 hours on top of that.
the day has 24 hours, I work only 6-8 hours, so, lots of time to post...nm
nm
They told me that high speed was mandatory. sm
I think that most hospitals require it of the services now. Some programs don't work with dial-up.
Not many companies use dial-up anymore.
