I do have sympathy.

But it is not the fault of MDI when people sat for months and waited for work.  You need to take some responsibility for yourself and find another job that does have work.

Furthermore, Transcend bought MDI, so it's not like these people are just plain out of a job.  They will have a job with Transcend.

This is all part of this industry.  Companies change names, they merge, they expand, they decrease their staff.  We need to be proactive.

I cannot feel sorry for people who sat around with no work FOR MONTHS and never did anything about it.  That's not fair to say that MDI chained you to your chair and said you cannot look for another job.  I mean really?  People sat for months?  I did see some posters who found second jobs and that's what you all should have been doing.

I know this sounds harsh, but it's so true.  We cannot expect others to do for us.  We need to do for ourselves.

Not help but sympathy. sm
I used to work with a blind MT.  We were on IBM wheelwriters.  One day he worked all day, and took his work up to supervisor's desk for proofing.  It was all blank.  His ribbon had run out early that morning.  I felt terrible for him.  Does your friend work on a braile keyboard?
I really do not need your sympathy, and furthermore

exactly what is it that you DO to help MTs?  A member of AAMT since 1978 perhaps? Big deal.  That's probably why we are where we are now.  I have been in this business a few decades myself.  You come on here stating MTs are doing this to themselves by not taking a stand, we need to see the writing on the wall (as if we are stupid), you wouldn't -sell your soul-, and basically calling us cowards because we need these jobs, as well as any other insults throughout the thread.  I don't see one piece of helpful information to anyone.  But YOU are working to help the MTs!!  These posts just sound like someone with too much time on their hands and quite frankly a little self-serving.  Yeah, you can stop.

I honestly believe the MT industry will evolve into what it is going to be and the small number of MTs who do make a stand will not make any difference to influence it one bit.  Some of us will get fed up and quit, take a stand and get fired, or evolve with the technology and changes in the industry.  Stop cutting us down and patting yourself on the back.

Lillybelle, my sympathy too. SM
What's that Chinese curse, May you live in interesting times or something like that? These are those, and unfortunately we are on the expense side of the ledger of a noble and economically embattled industry. For your own sake in making your decisions, although it's tough you need to accept, as so many others very foolishly refuse to, that there's no reason why offshore transcriptionists will not be learning to do this work as competently and securely as we. The downside of having English as the world's major language.

By all means you and your colleague should look seriously into going with another company. You are being used to their benefit as your position deteriorates in this transition. Having somewhere else to go will give you the strength to use whatever leverage you might actually still have to demand better benefits. Be aware, though, that the tides of change are going against you, and the wishes of your physicians, and it may well not make any difference at all. But even if you don't improve on their offer, you'll feel better for refusing to allow them to benefit from your victimization.

Last, at this time there is still money to be made in this industry on a production basis by those who work hard and smart. If you're not already doing it, plan on extensive use of a word Expander to maximize your words-per-minute production, plus extensive development of macros and templates for each account.

Best wishes.
To no sympathy, you just don't understand
Fed up, I totally understand.  You are not complaining about working a little OT here and there.  You are complaining about being treated as if you are a robot and can pump out endless work when necessary, and believe me when I tell you, Amphion will keep this up for months on end if they need to, and they will expect you to keep your QA perfect while being overworked too.  This is why I left Amphion a while back.  I couldn't handle the pressure anymore.  Amphion was way to stressful for me. After 3 months straight of mandatory OT everyday, I cracked like a nut!
WHO ASKED YOU FOR SYMPATHY?
Get over yourself, gourdo.

You're not Norma Rae.

You have no credibility in this discussion because you don't have a dog in the fight.

But if we ever need someone to give us advice on living off of our husband's pension, you'll be the first one we call.
Isn't that ridculous? U have my full sympathy.
Why R they doing this to us??? Sheesh.
