I've met applicants who claimed they knew Word, were computer literate, etc. They'd get in training and wouldn't know how to click the mouse, wouldn't know the difference between a right-click and a left-click, and would be drawing PICTURES of the windows during training so they could remember how to close a file or reduce it (um, what's that little X in the corner for? or do I use the little dash?).

I remember one lady who said she knew Word well. I asked her to sit down at the computer and just type the top of her resume into the Word document, formatting it. The heading of the resume was centered and bolded. Very basic things to anybody who knows Word, right? She sat there for a bit, rather puzzled, and finally I asked her if there was something she needed. Yes, I'm just trying to find the bold key on this keyboard.

Applicants will say anything. Those strange questions are huge timesavers and necessary to screen out the ones who really are not computer literate.
