I don't have to make the decision the night before or in the morning whether to pack a lunch or buy. Can decide to make rice in the cooker, microwave a meal or just eat a sandwich, or even not eat till I'm famished, all up to me and not a clock.

Wow I faced this very same decision just last month, & thankfully chose Med-Scribe. I am doing OK with them. Since then I have heard so much negative about Soft Script that I am happy with my choice. The pay is not bad, the people are very nice to work with, & the work is not hard.

I've been going through the same thing on decisions. A lady told me something that made a lot of sense. She had worked different places and told me it depends most on the platform and she had been on enough of them that she could tell right off if she could make money or not. I last began with a really good to work for company that everybody loves. However, it's the docs that make or break you. They have been holding the mike open a lot as they look through the charts on HP, Consult and DS. That really hurts my line count. Also, there's too big a difference in my line count between 1 company and another. Either 1 company's system is giving me too many lines or the other is giving me too few lines. 1200/day at 1 company and 600/day at the other is too big a difference. You'll just have to ask questions and job hop until you find something you can live with.

Informed decisions
You're looking before you even get your info clear? Interesting.
The changes take place Jan 1. Your paperwork has to be submitted by 12/1.
The "firm" schedule is actually MUCH more flexible than any I've ever seen with MQ as you're looking at choosing from 24 hours in 7 days.
I make my own decisions
I am an independent contractor, and yes I will tell them what I can and will do and when and how I will do it. If they don't like it, they can choose another contractor.
Don't be jealous because you've allowed someone to take advantage of you!

Career decisions
I've done nursing and I am here to tell you all that it is not as easy as it looks. The money might be great, but it is so frustrating and exhausting, especially when you are right there on the front lines, so to speak, dealing with life and death right up close working in a somewhat dysfunctional medical system.
If you are young and energetic or just energetic at any age, it might be a viable solution to study nursing. For me, like some others, working from home, at home, is my top priority.
Through the years, I have noticed that many of the really happy MTs are those who do not have to depend on their MT jobs to pay their main bills, but may do medical transcription work part time to supplement their income. No, I am not discounting those who do it full-time and are very successful and really love it; I'm sure they do exist.
However, the suggestions made in this thread make total sense to me, kind of like having the best of both worlds. Now, the challenge is to find that perfect part-time MT job, as well as a really good career with a promising future, doing something else.
Make informed decisions
I had worked for TransHealth and they did pay for the spaces/headers but I would advise to seek other opportunities. They kept changing mgmt staff and you did not know who was coming or going. A lot of ESL dictation; no incentive whatsoever working wknds or shift differential. They will pay you 10 cpl if you are willing to sacrifice every weekend. Also you might get condescending emails from couple of the QA staff and when there is a huge backlog they send their "panic" emails but when there is no work, you don't hear a peep out of them.

People come and go all the time. Some leave and then decide to come back. There have been changes but that happens anywhere. Personally, I really like it. Decent benefits, wages and I like the platform. I never run out of work and get paid on time.
After reading some of the posts of other companies, I don't see how anyone can say MQ is that bad.
If they invented a food pedal, we would never be allowed to take a lunch break, lol.

They play a lot of games. Pay was on
time, but they do have their favorites who get the good work. Used to run out of work all the time and have to wait for more overflow to come in, so bailed out.

pay is good, but they still play favorites and some typists make off like bandits on cream of the crop dictators while the rest of you get the scum.
If you'll read through past posts you'll find lots of
recent info. Why do you need menitoring if you already work as an MT. Unless you do clinic work most companies will require you to work at least one weekend day, at least initially.
It all boils down to who will play the game
There have been a lot of good MTs at OSI. Most of those who do excellent work and have years of experience have left OSi because of tactics such as this. She may have a good work ethic and sunny disposition and do good work but is not in a better position to supervise other MTs who are better all around. The point is that people new to either the MT industry or to OSI are most often the ones promoted because they are most assuredly YES people since they don't have enough experience to know any better that OSI consistently does things such as break the wage and hour law among other things.

Not sure about Gear Player, but in open Express Scribe and go to settings, and then settings, and go to the tab files, and you should be able to check the box there. You can also go to the WMA file right click and select open with and then select your Express Scribe. Good luck on the test!
Two companies that do not play games
are MDI-MD and Landmark. Good honest people at both companies.
It's one of the tricks that companies play on us
so that they can control our productivity, penalize and pay less, despite getting their work done. The same thing happened to me a year ago, we were asked to follow dossier given by the client, but then a few QAs followed AAMT BOS, etc. Nevertheless, we were penalized left and right and eventually when we stood up and reported their actions, then it stopped completely.
The beauty of this job has been that I can play with Junior (sm)
and still make decent money. It all depends on the company you work for. And 20 years from now, I'll be doing something else.
Help! How do I play this test file?
I'm taking a test for a job. I was sent a file that opens in Creative MediaSource. How am I supposed to transcribe this when it's going so fast? I need to use my foot pedal but there is no option. Please someone help me! I want this job!

with each report we type. If that doesn't justify a decent compensation, I don't know what will.
Should we just hop to the problem parts of the report since we are only getting paid for that part of the report, eschewing the rest, not making sure it makes sense? It's outrageous, and we should all refuse to do it unless we get paid the same as straight typing. Why should technological advances cause us to lose pay? No one else is taking a cut except us, yet we are the glue that holds this profession together. I know it's all been said before, but it's wrong, and if the MTSOs read this board, they will at least know where we stand on it.
We earned our knowledge through blood, sweat and tears over the years, and we should be compensated for it. Why shouldn't we?!

No experience because I couldnt even take the transcription tests. The voice files would not play.
How about you? I was bummed. I was really interested in the job but I tried everything to get the voice files to play but they wouldnt. Oh well, I guess if it were meant to be, then I would have been able to take the test.
Anyone else have problems taking USA Type test? Cant get my comp to play the sound file.
Any suggestions? I really want to take the test but their sound file keeps loading onto my music program, and when I try to load it on Windows Medial Player it tells me I need codecs, so how would I find that to load?
The company hiring you should provide the Dictaphone pedal or the adapter to play the ExText

Transcend cares only about the big pay for its managers and corporate people, nothing for its MTs. Pay used to be decent, is less than mediocre for that horrible editing platform we are forced to use. ROMs have nothing to do but yell at the MTs and invent first grade games to play. I would rather have had the $1.48 postage and $1.00 it cost for the mouse pad and strip calendar.
Remember the old days when Edix used to give the Drake and Drake drug book for MT week? That was when Edix was a good company, too.
Probably figure you'll want Way more than they'll offer, whatever it might be. :) nm
