How bad would I look?

I don't think you will look bad. I am sure your trainer wants your undivided attention, and the best way to do that (and begin a new job) is without a proverbial chip on your shoulder. Anyway, if you feel very strongly about appointments, keeping appointments, etc., set an example. Always respond to your emails. Always make followup calls, etc. Thats all you can really do. (Can't really take your employer to task for being busy.
