Here's my 2 cents on satellite, I have

Wild Blue and it works fine. I pay for it (lumped in with the TV, etc)and got the fastest they have. While it caused issues when my platform for Dictatphone ExText, I'm now on escription and it works fine. Not as fast as DSl/Cable but ok. I wouldn't hestitate to recommend it for an escription program, but defiitely not for Dictaphone (through a VPN) Way to slow and just irritating, but it could be done. Hope this helps!

What is average? 7 cents, 8 cents, 9 cents? 65-character?

I also work for 8 cents a line. I left a job typing OPs for 10-11 cents sm
to take a clinic job. I made an average of $17-18 an hour with OPs, now make $16-17 an hour, but the work is easier on me. I do not call that poor pay. I type 200+ lines an hour. True, it isn't the $26-27 an hour I was making 10 years ago at a hospital, but that's gone for good. I have excellent skills, make better than 99% on QA at any company I have worked for, and some of those have been very demanding.
I'm afraid the people that are expecting to make $20-30 an hour in MT are going to be disappointed. A few can still make that amount, but for the average good transcriptionist, the pay is much more likely to run $15-20. Benefits are pretty much gone. However, I feel that what I'm making is considerably above what I could make in another field, unless I decide to teach, which I will not do. Still, I make more than I would at Walmart or Burger King, or even a secretarial job. It's my choice. Good luck to you.
The mentoring program does not pay 8-1/2 cents per line. Believe it is like 6 cents.

4 CENTS , SCHMORE CENTS. THAT'S WRONG!
Whether an MT is new or an editor, 4 cents a line is deeply insulting, and 9 cents per line isn't really too much better. You know, I understand that most of these MT companies want to save money, but most of them don't seem to want to pay what an MT's time and skills are really worth. Why not pay an MT who has been in the field for 7-10 years or more 15 or 20 cents per line? At least I might consider working for one of these companies at home if I were to be paid that much straight off the bat for having 12 years' experience, but I guess that would be too much like right...
Do they still pay you 5 cents a line and 2 cents if you send anything to QA?
xx
I have a problem with 7 cents and 8 cents a line because
...when I started 15 years ago, my very first MT job started me out at 8 cents a gross line, then went to 9 cents a gross line after only a year. I was SOOO happy and proud of myself for choosing a profession that paid so well - I imagined myself making a lot of $$ once I had 10 or 15 years experience behind me...
Well that never happened; in fact, it all went backwards, pay wise. The company I worked for back then sold out to a national, and of course the pay was cut, and 9 cents a gross line was never to be had again, at least not that I could find. I am considered living in poverty now. I started out great but have ended up very badly.
I think my own personal problem is that it's hard for me to let go the fact that I made good money just starting out and how everything I had ever learned about jobs, careers and pay was that the more experience and education you have in a particular field, the more your pay goes up as each year passes. Well my pay has been consistently taking a nosedive for at least a decade now. I actually have to work MORE to make at least as much as I did years ago, and it's killing me health-wise as far as my wrists, my legs, my neck, my back....
It also kills me that I'm going to have to accept 7 or 8 cents a 65-character line when I made so much more than that 15 years ago.
I suppose to someone who's just starting out, 7 or 8 cents would seem pretty good, though. Maybe that's why I haven't been able to land any jobs with my resume. They may not want me with my years of experience, probably want a newbie who will be more grateful about such low pay. I dunno.
I could just kick myself for wasting money on MT school those years ago when I could've spent it on a career that would actually LAST and where I'd be making great money after being in the same field for 15 years. There's just no reward to this business. None at all, IMO.
I would NOT recommend this field to anyone just getting started. To me, it's a dead field.
I'd have more freedom working at McDonalds (for a number of reasons), and, believe me, I've been considering taking a local job around my home for minimum wage. At least I'd have a consistent paycheck and would know exactly what I'm getting every 2 weeks, then build from there as far as another job or two.
Well anyway that's all. I really need a job. I'm going down, going under, and it's a shame because I do very good work and have all this experience but no one seems to want me, even the low-paying companies. Oh well.
Satellite is secure. Wireless DSL is less secure than satellite but
yet companies accept that. Satellite can be very secure depending on how you have everything set up.

I'll add my 5 cents to your 2 for 7 cents sm
I AGREE WITH YOU!
I know an MT who sits on her laurels and whines about no work and only getting 9 cpl after 5 whole years of experience. She can type 3 specialties, won't touch an ESL, goofs off when there is work and whines when there is not. I have tried to help, but it is quite plain to me she doesn't want that help.
I have about 3 times the experience of the above MT. The only specialty I have not done is pathology. I have literally done everything else. I know the BOS 2 like the back of my hand and I have outstanding accuracy scores (even if I can't type straight here). I work as an employee and make a base rate of 8.5 cpl, which I never get because I always have some of the different incentives offered. I regularly turn that 8.5 cpl into $25 an hour and at my PT job where I get 10 cpl and faster software, I can turn that into $32.50 an hour.
I have heard, more times than I can count from other MTs that they wish they could have my income. I can tell they why they don't. It is called hang out to complain on a message board like MTStars. It is doing everything, BUT your work on your shift. It is your lack of a willingness to learn new things, even if they slow you down some. This very year, recently in fact, I was put on straight cardiology procedure notes and I didn't worry for a second that I would suffer financially. I AM FLEXIBLE and that, in a nutshell, is why most MTs will not succeed.
A long time ago I realized that if I want more money, I was going to have to work SMART, not hard. In my 15 years, I now make 5 times what I did my first year and at the same exact line rate I had then! I spend less time working to achieve that these days. So no, I can't agree with your sky is falling routine.
Most of you...your attitudes suck. If I had to have you on site as my employees, you would not last 15 minutes. The first time I heard you at the water cooler whining about your pay, I'd fire your fanny so fast it would make your head SWIM. I have eyes in the back of my head too, so when you started making that stink face you are making right now, I'd have sacked you for that, on the spot, no warning and no day's pay. The ONLY reason you all get away with this is that you THINK no one who knows you is watching and that your respective contract holders can't figure out who you are.
By and large, I can't tolerate other MTs as friends. I find them lazy, self-absorbed whiners and complainers with some the worst negative attitudes I have EVER seen! If you hate MT so very much GO GET A JOB DOING SOMETHING ELSE. I can tell you, your bad attitude, your tendency to complain, whine, witch (with a capital B), moan and ALWAYS see the most negative side of everything...THAT crap will follow you to that new career and it won't be any better than this one. You have issues and I really think they are issues for a good therapist. They are called personality disorders and many of you have them in multiples and in spades!
I think you should be completely and utterly ashamed of yourselves. Too many people are out of work, homeless, and starving this Christmas to be so opinionated and selfish.
Satellite
I believe one is Transcend.
They had a ad once that said no satellite. nm
nm
Do not get satellite!!!
Satellite is a waste of money. I had it for four years and I could hardly work for any MTSO companies. Most of them do not allow satellite. If you have DSL or cable, please go that route. I currently use EMDAT and I remember the employer's ad said no dial-up or satellite with EMDAT. Good luck!!!
Satellite, anyone? (sm)
I found a great house out in the boonies and the only available high-speed internet is by satellite, a company called Wild Blue. Does anyone know of any MT companies that let you work by satellite, and has anyone got any experience with Wild Blue or other satellite providers? I appreciate the help. Can't move if I can't work.
What is so bad about satellite
In my experience with satellite internet, it has been way better than cable as far as outages. When I had an outage with cable, there was NOTHING I could do until it was back up and running usually by calling the cable company.
If there is an outage with my satellite internet, I can do several things that ALWAYS WORK.
EX #1: If it is snowing and my internet isn't working, I go wipe off my satellite with a broom.. Internet is back instantly. Sometimes I have to do this several times a day.
EX #2: If your internet isn't working and it isn't snowing or torrential downpour of rain, then unplug your internet and shut down your computer. Restart and then plug everything back in. Always works.
Only time I have ever lost internet was to torrential downpours of rain and the second it let up, my internet was back.
Am I one of the lucky few that this happens to? It is just so irritating to see not accepting satellite internet because of reliability issues.
I think sometimes people just use that to an advantage and it gives ALL SATELLITE a bad name - I'll just tell them I didn't work because my internet was down. Do you know how many times in the past 2 years I had to call off of work because of internet issues? ZERO. Do you know how many times I had to call off work because my cable internet was down? At least once a week. Not fun.
You can get satellite for $70/mo and
can get free systems sometimes if you sign a 12-mo contract. If you are unable to get a job because you don't have high-speed internet then look at the cost of that versus satellite.
Satellite
Does anyone know of any companies, large or small, that work with satellite (Hughes)?? I have just moved to a very remote area and broadband is not available. Any help is much appreciated.
Satellite
Years ago I was so naive that I thought I was cable when (because it was through a cable company) I applied that is what I told them and I had fewer problems than the people with actual cable connections or DSL, and I had more protection against tampering with my internet than I currently do with the best cable company in town. So, I am not entirely sure that I would not just apply and say yeah high speed internet connection.
satellite
I tried working on one of the accounts they now have when I had a satellite. It was just not compatible. I now have DSL, much better all around. I was working for MQ when I had the satellite and they had a great hospital, which has since gone to KS.
I have satellite...
I had cale for yrs ... loved it ... now moved to country had to get satellite. Yea its a little slower but seriously ..not bad and the satellite companies usually have three catagories ... FAST FASTER and FASTEST ... i only have fast... and its really not bad
I think it depends on the satellite. sm
It's not recommended but there are MTs using satellite within the company. Ask the recruiter.
I disagree with you on satellite. Please sm.
I have had the DW4000 business edition for 4 years. I just switched over to the DW7000HNS. I can say my problems have been minimal over the 4-year time period. However, I do know there are a few companies out there that do not work with satellite setups due to VPNs and supposedly being able to hack into it. That is their loss. If you have the right setup, you can work with VPNs without any problem (I do now). I have even had a tech tell me that he could get into my network. I told him to go ahead and give it a try. Nearly 2 hours later, he said Ok, I can't. For every company not willing to work with a satellite connection (which can be safer than wireless DSL), there are 2 that are willing to work with it. So, just keep looking for those. :) I hope everyone has a great week!

Satellite okay for Keystrokes??
I just filled out a questionnaire Keystrokes sent me, and one of the questions was do you have DSL or cable...as I am on broadband/satellite I am now wondering if that closes the door for me? I do WISH companies would post on their websites what their internet requirements are, sure would save some time for everybody! So, anyone here who knows about internet for Keystrokes? thanks much!
Keystrokes and Satellite
They do post their requirements DSL or Cable. I have a friend who was turned down because she only had satellite so I'm think, that you do not match.
EXText/Satellite
My experience says no. The satellite connection I had just had too many highs and lows to be productive. This was on Dictaphone EXText. Hope this helps. IMO, Broadband is definitely the way to go if at all possible.
I use satellite for one account...sm
which is a web-based account and so far no problems, though I have only been on it a few weeks. The company seemed to think the satellite would be fine. My primary account at KS uses C-phone, so need a second phone line and ULLD. So obviously there are a number of different platforms, varying from account to account.
I also was under the understanding that they have put a freeze on hiring for the time being....but unless it says that on their website I don't see the harm in putting in your resume. Then when you get a chance to talk to a recruiter you can let them know what your internet capabilities are. I cannot get cable or DSL and was feeling discouraged about finding someone who would take me, but KS didn't bat an eye about my satellite. I was told that they have accounts which do require cable/DSL, but its not all of them....thankfully! Good luck.

I know a year or two ago satellite was okay.. (sm)
We had some sort of training conference call thingy over the net and some ladies voiced concerns with having satellite and if there would be any problems with getting a particular type of work done...at that time there was no problem. Again, this was at least a year ago, so I don't know for sure. Personally, I wouldn't say nuthin' and just say you have high speed internet and leave it at that.
It can be easier to ask for forgiveness than persmission when it comes to certain things, know what I'm sayin?
Anyone know if TransTech allows Satellite?
Thanks!
Yes, I could get satellite but costs way too much

satellite/dial-up
I was told that satellite is not HIPAA compliant. I can't get DSL or cable where I live either and really don't want to go to the expense of satellite if I can't use it to work. I also have the issue of not having a complete clear view of the southern sky that I understand you need with Wildblue. I only have dial-up. Unfortunately, fewer and fewer companies have accounts that work with dial-up.
I have Hughes satellite and really...
99.9% of the time I do not have any problem what so ever. In fact I have just upgraded to a higher speed system with them. It does not wax and wane on me at all. The only problem is when I have thunderstorms with huge tops on them that really block out the signal. Over a year, I may loose a signal 8 times. I get off and make up the time. I have had satellite now for 3-4 years. I have been off work way more times because of lack of work than losing my satellite signal.
Don't believe it... satellite is great!!!
That's bull. I also have a satellite connection and have used a VPN connection and have no problems at all. If it snows, I get out wipe the snow off and I'm up and running again. Cable or DSL, you have to wait on someone else to fix it.
Satellite connection
I am moving and looking for companies that allow internet work using a satellite connection rather than a DSL or cable co. as neither of these are available in the area. Thanks if anyone works using satellite or knows of companies that allow this.
Transolutions, satellite okay. I see they still have sm
dialup for DOS, but after that goes away, will satellite work? What if they hire someone for the DOS, and then transition to high speed and all I can get is satellite?
I have used satellite for years...
I have Hughes satellite and have worked on it for about 2 years now. I originally could not because the VPNs would not work with them. Companies are beginning to change that. I currently work for Transcend and love them. I work in both DOS with C-phone and in Apex on satellite. My suggestion, if you go satellite, would be to get one of the higher plans. I have one that has a static IP and I believe this helps. I would stay away from dial-up, but I have not used it in years, so it might be different now. Good luck to you! It is great living out in the middle of nowhere, but you have to do a little more work to get set up.
working with satellite
I also work for Transcend however was told could not use satellite. Apparently this has changed? Info please!!

frequently job ads say no satellite sm
one person said (so-called PC person) said might be because the signal can be picked up out of air and system/data can be compromised. Not certain this is reason job ads say this for certain.
Satellite person here
I have the misfortune of having satellite (Hughes to be specific). As I have always been more than vocal about (!) it is only one step above dialup, and a small one at that.
The reason some systems (allegedly) don't work with satellite is that the signal is not a continuous flow as with cable. The upload/dowload is sort-of pulsed in bursts, and some feel that their platforms can't work with that. I have worked on several different systems since having the misfortune of getting satellite and have not found one that I could not work with; however, there are some that it is abysmally slow. If as a rule you get short reports, satellite will kill your line count, as connections to the main server (where it gets the demographic information, cc's, etc.) is ssllooooooooooooooww.
If I had any alternative at all to satellite, I would take it. I am in the rural midwest- the nearest town with a population greater than 1000 is 35 miles away. DSL and cable will probably never be offered out here. Another type called line of sight wireless doesn't come out here. After having called all the carriers who offer the USB wireless (Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint, et al), I found that none of them offer the service way out here. So I have dialup or satellite. I pay dearly for the satellite ($80/month for their mid-grade service- 70 for 1 step below, 90 for their best), yet my internet is crap. Even when the sun is shining, the passing of a nice white fluffy cloud can knock out the signal. It is horrifically slow and if I want to send pictures or download from YouTube, I tend to set it to do its thing and go throw in a load of clothes, etc., and hopefully it will be done by the time I get back.
And God help you if something goes wrong with it. After the first year, if they have to send a technician out for whatever reason, it's $150 for them just to pull in the driveway (and it takes them a couple of weeks to get there).
If you have any alternative at all to satellite, I'd take it. I don't know if they're all alike or not, but at least from my own experience, Hughes is horrible.
Satellite here and no problems
I live out in the sticks as well and have had satellite (prairieinet) for about 10 years and have never had any problems whatsoever. It costs me about $150/month for top of the line package speedwise, but it's worth every penny. I've never had rain, thunderstorms, clouds, snowstorms or anything interfere with it and would recommend it to anyone. No problems uploading or downloading at all. Guess it depends on your satellite company.
COMPANIES & satellite internet
Sorry about the error there, I hit the button before I caught that!!!
You can get a satellite system to get internet
though I am not sure that this is what you are looking for. It is a huge dish, about twice the size of the TV only dish, plus 2 modems. Supposedly the satellite cannot be mobile, but we received certification in setting it up so we were legit. There are companies that sell the same dish/equipment with their equipment that automatically raises the satellite and locks on the signal, though this needs to be mounted in a permanent place, like on top of an RV. This system costs about $5,000. You can get certified and just set the thing up as you need to, after you get the hang of it, it doesn't take long to do. Google DirecWay and Starband. Also google Motosat or Datastorm for the expensive one.
Another option is an air card. There are various brands out there and cost about $300.00 for the card and not sure about monthly service. Google air card and you'll get more info. Service is limited at this time.
There is a new service called ClearWire that operates off of a cell phone tower. You have to have a modem that plugs into an outlet and then you plug your computer into the modem. Again, service is limited at this time.
As far as I know, other than WiFi these are the options available for a wireless mobile service.
Can we use satellite internet with Webmedx.?nm TX
I have satellite with Hughes- $69/mo. No problems. nm
