Good Lord! You want to go back to 1918, like my grandma who quit school in 3rd grade to go work

in a box factory? No, child labor laws have nothing to do with poor work ethic. It is simple enough to develop good work ethic with laundry, chores, etc. I think it is more the prosperity of the last few generations. When you have lots of money, it's hard not to give it to your kids, spares you the unpleasant feeling of watching them struggle and suffer...

Remember in grade school
when you were picked on by a bully? You ran to the teacher and told. The teacher said just ignore them. By ignoring wrongdoing you are being complicit. PERIOD!!
I would think they have to over-hire, some quit, some don't make the grade. (sm)
They don't always know how productive any one person will be until they get in there and try. Had they not hired extra they might have been in trouble when you quit after only a month.
Well, go back to work and quit trying to stir the pot.

End of payperiod? Good Lord

I have at least 5 friends who have gone to school and then quit because it was hard!

Talk about taking everything out of context good lord and you're calling yourself a prof???

willing to go back to school?
If you are willing to go back into 3-9 months of training there is this thing called Scoping - which is basically VR for the legal industry. Most courtrooms use VR instead of a traditional court reporter - the job of the court reporter is now to verify that the VR is working properly and is picking up the important people in the courtroom. The pay is pretty decent - about that of an experienced MT. The catch is you have to learn short hand because if the audio isn't working properly the reporter has to pull out her ShortHand machine and type it out - then you AR paid to translate it into a court report.

Search around for scoping jobs - there was one listed a couple of months ago on the job seeker's board, that's how I heard about it.
Going back to school
I am going back to school so I will just get out of transcription completely.
going back to school
I've been thinking for a long time about going back to school, just kind of a vague someday-I-will sort of thing, mostly because I have known for quite a while that I'm not going to be able to make a lifetime career out of MT with the changes the industry is facing, but I always put it off. Now I'm starting classes at my local university in January and what finally got me motivated to get it going was starting on VR. Has anyone else noticed how quickly VR has been taking hold in companies the last year or two? It's just all over the place now, including MDI, and while the VR at MDI is pretty decent it's just been a wakeup call to me that I need to get in gear and get an exit strategy out of the business. The other big factor is EMR and the federal mandate for electronic records by 2012. I don't think that means all transcription will be eliminated by then of course, but I think as more clinics are forced into a system anyway a lot of them will go with something that does help them eliminate their MTs. So... EMRs taking over clinic jobs and the acute care MTs fighting over the VR lines to get the paycheck they need... it's just a dead end.

If you can go to school, I'd do it for sure. Keep on part-time with MDI if you need to or want to, but the best thing you can do for your future is make sure that there is a job there for you.
Going back to school
I know exactly how you feel about being sure you make the right decision.  I am going back to school for nursing, after having been able to stay at home, full-time, for the last 15+ years as an MT.  I'm going through a little anxiety at the thought of getting back out there in the workforce.  While it served me quite well in those years and allowed me to be home to raise my children, unfortunately I agree with the other posts as far as MT'ing eventually being a low wage career in the near future.  With VR, it is a nice break from typing but the pay is severely low and seems to be getting lower across the board for both straight typing and VR work.  So, my 2 cents is it never hurts to train for another profession, if nothing else to fall back on if you need to.  Go with your gut...it's usually always right.
Call or go back to the school
and ask them exactly where these $60,000 to $70,000 jobs are. When they tell you, let us all know!
I went back to nursing school when I was 34
and actually did better than my younger classmates. I think I realized how important it was at that age, much more so than when I was 18. I only worked as a nurse for a few years and then started transcribing. You're never too old to pursue something that interest you. Nursing school is tough but very interesting.
Well she would actually be thinking about them by going back to school also (sm)
I am at a point where i need a divorce but guess what? No job security. So far my kids are staying in an unhappy home. I pray that never happens to her. Even if it doesn't she still needs job security to take care of her babies, married or not, and nursing would give her way more security than this.
Not with MDI anymore but going back to school sm
I'm going for an associate's in health information management, and a good portion of the program is for coding. I can also go for my bachelor's afterward in health service administration, so even if coding goes the way of transcription at some point, I have options that can't be outsourced. I am working full-time, but my kids are in elementary and middle school and I'm not doing this as a single parent, so there are definitely some challenges for you. That said, I think many people have challenges doing this sort of thing - mine is that it has been 16 years since I was in college and there are a lot more technical things to learn. I had kicked myself for years for not finishing college when I had the chance the first time, so whatever you decide, try to make sure you will not regret it - whether that is continuing school or not - and only you can decide that. Good luck :)
Tired, but end is in sight - going back to school!

I am so happy.  I am going back to college.  Depending on where you live, with the stimulus plans and everything else, there may be funding available to help you train for another profession.  I live in Michigan.  The state has a program called No Worker Left Behind where they will pay for schooling and books up to 10,000.  To qualify you must have a total family income of less than 40,000 a year (easy on MT pay).  That's basically it. Check into your state and see what's offered.  There's a list of the need for jobs to be filled in 2012 and you can pick from that list, there's probably 300 different types of jobs listed.  It includes everything from truck driving school to a chef to a college associate degree in a variety of subjects.

Anyone quit MQ and gone back to them recently?
nm
Has anyone ever quit Transcend and been able to go back...
Due to family circumstances and my own personal medical issues, I quit abruptly without notice, which I am so unhappy with myself about. I have never just stopped working somewhere and I was ashamed of how I handled it so I just stayed gone, not communicating with them and I got the termination letter.  I am now on my feet and things are going good and I want to go back to work. I'd love to get my job back but no one has responded to me so should I assume I burned that bridge and try to move on.  I really did love my job there. Anyone else quit and go back?
Yes. I quit and was told I could come back

Focus was good for me when I was just out of school...

Focus was a great company at one time and I got my start as a newbie there, and my teams leaders and the HR people were all great.  They pretty much let you worked whenever you wanted to (which is unusual but great) and did not bother you and you would get regular QA audits/feedback.  Just recently, since the merger or being bought by Nuance, things have changed drastically.   I do not want to post any negatives, because again, I am grateful since they were my first job, but I am glad I found a second company because I can see the writing on the wall and it does not look good right now.  I have decided to part ways with them since they are going through a major transistion, and I hope it works out well for all in the end.

I wish Focus and the MTs still there the very best...

BTW: When you quit, wondering if you sent computer back right away if you had one and
and the amount of time it took for you to start the new job, or did you overlap? I am just trying to figure logistics out and wanted to see what you did. Thanks in advance for your advice.
Good for you. I've gained 10 pounds since high school graduation in 1976.

Grandma
I also tested for Medware 2 weeks ago and have heard nothing.
Yep, my grandma used to say
Once burned, twice careful.  Took me a long time to realize what she meant.  Now I am off to the casino, probably to help the Cherokee economy.  LOL
You can do it ... (school + work) (sm)
I transcribe for 3 clients AND I go to school full time and have a family.  It's doable ... difficult but doable.  Keep your chin up!  :)
That would be grandma police.

I have One in school but work nights

As it just works out better overall.  No kids, phone calls, et cetera.  Sleep deprived??  Yes, most of the time!!  LOL

TransTech MT grandma that does not even the spelling of there/their !!!!! WOW
nm
Oh, Lord, here we go.
Please take it to the politics board, so those of us who choose not to be vomited on by the collective 'we' versus 'them' crowds can have some peace.
Dear Lord, lol

C'mon, people, lighten up.

Okay, one of the reasons I posted on here was because I DIDN'T want to sow seeds of discord within the company and cause trouble there. I wanted to know if I was alone in my perceptions, if I had been too hard on Transcend or if there were others who felt the same way, if I was alone.

I talked to a member of the quality council about it, who actually felt similarly in some ways, and there was only one other person I trust enough to talk to about it in detail with through  email. I thought if I talked to anyone else about it, I'd be causing trouble, and I thought maybe she and I were alone.

As I said previously, I see where I could've done some things differently, and Transcend could've too. Both sides of an argument usually contain truth, there are rarely any innocent "victims."

No, I will not post specifics because it might discourage new people who haven't had the same experience as I did and perhaps my experience was unique to me and a few individuals for whatever reason, which again, was the same reason I didn't post on the forum or email others and ask.

If anything, the cheerleaders now are making me MORE comfortable with my decision to quit by their behavior on here, not less.

If you could perhaps see another perspective other than your own and allow for the possibility that just because YOU see things that way doesn't mean everyone does, then you might learn something useful, learn from others' mistakes or the company could learn from its mistakes, that's what I'm going to do with this.

It appears that others are trying to control the negativity out of everyone, like Stepford Wives, instead of listening better and learning from our mistakes, which  might make us all more productive as individuals and a company; however, this behavior is evidence that that will never happen, so I standby my decision to quit.

Thanks for helping me out with that, and it wasn't the negatives that did it, it was the beating-a-dead horse cheerleaders who are misjudging why people are afraid to talk about their concerns.

If it's positive for you, that's all that matters. Boundaries, people. Why are people taking it so personally if Transcend is insulted?

So quit - there are plenty of jobs for good MTs. sm
If you think truly they suck, find somewhere else.
Oh, for Lord's sake, fastMT...What's up...
with the racist bashing today? Is it really necessary? My concern is not WHAT anyone puts on their heads, whether it's a bindi or earmuffs, but that Americans' medical records are being sent offshore, to ANY shore.
I would hate to stand before the Lord
and explain why I had told someone in grief over the loss of her father to suck it up. Such spiritual cruelty is amazing. I have to wonder what can happen to a person to make them so hard. I also have to hold a compassion thought for them because only a person in tremendous pain could speak in such a way to another. On the other hand, those who would say suck it up to grieving people could be slated for a great career at the Q. Just a thought.
I goes along with when I was in 8th grade

I had to count change back.  There was no register that I plugged in 5 dollars and came up with the correct amount of change.  Go to a store now, and if the register malfunctions, the cashier is clueless!  HELLO??????  It's not just this profession, it is any profession that has automated the parameters for which we produce the product or do the job.

I used books, I still use books, and use the H8LL out of google!  But, if I still cannot come up with the correct term or if I am the last bit unsure, I send it to QA because that's what the company wants.  On the norm, many years ago, I'd go straight to the horse's mouth which was the dictator.  We do not have that luxury of learning in this day and age.  I have also seen where QA people guess or just simply take the word out or I never ever see that document again to even learn from it.  I have 20 years in this business.  I have my own accounts.  No one should be shot down for not being sure.  This is the medical profession.

Many people have different skill sets.  Maybe the newer MTs are taught never to guess as I was taught which is best.  Let's not kid.  QA:  If you don't like your job, get out!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I quit and found greener pastures! Good luck to you. nm

Gotta agree -- YOG was the best! Great pay, good benefits. I quit sm
the moment I heard she had sold to MQ .. ugh.
Just because you obviously could not make the grade, does not mean others cannot. nm
z
you must not have made the grade. He requires
very high quality work, but pay is worth it.
I have no problem making the grade anywhere else.

I just typed 300 lines in a half hour, which is something that could NEVER happen at MDI-MD, so I have no problem whatsoever making the grade as you put it.

Jeez, why can't you MDI cheerleaders just accept that not everyone thinks your company is the absolute greatest.  Seems like anytime anyone posts an experience with your company that was negative, you people jump all over them and can't seem to accept it for some reason.

It's obvious that MDI only takes care of a select few MTs and everybody else is expendable, so I don't know why it's so hard for you to believe that not everybody has the same experience as you.  It's a real shame that they operate in this manner, but I don't care anymore as I've moved on to much better things and found MDI to be nothing but a waste of time.  Excuse me, while I make my true 40+ an hour.

I think you're giving all these companies the same grade and that (sm)

is not the case.  There are some that will rip you off, change your pay, etc. like one mentioned above on this board.  There are other evil ones who will intimidate to get their work done and others who will tell you how fantastic you are and give raises.

Anyway, I've worked for enough companies and found a world of difference and found some companies to be intolerable.

Can't anyone give the OP the names of any companies?  They aren't asking for a psychology lesson, they are looking to make a paycheck.

If you can make the grade, this will be the best company you have ever worked for.
What specifically would you like to know?
I was reading about the back up help. I would like also to have some back up work.
I am not getting anywhere near 12,000 lines this go around.  My goal is 12,000 lines each pay period.
do i have to quit MQ to work for wedmedx
Help!  Do I have to quit my job with MQ to work part-time with Webmedx?
RE: do i have to quit MQ to work for wedmedx
Not unless you want to. Your choice.
quit mq to work for webmdx
i was told they have an ER account that is busy on the weekends...
You don't have to quit. Just work the hours
you are scheduled for and don't depend on them for anything. Put your energies into the other two positions you have and more dependence on them. This job will take care of itself, because they know you can't make a living with the way they are behaving. They will either give you more work to keep you, or if you don't care what they do, the job will just disappear on its own. If you must quit, I think it would be safe to say to them that they are not meeting YOUR needs and that you must move on. I have done it several times because I have been in the same position you are in that I would call bait and switch. Some of they were glad to see me go, others wanted to keep me, but I can't stay unless I am making the money that I REQUIRE to make a living.
I quit due to lack of work. I know of 6 others who also

quit before I did due to lack of work.  There are some accounts that have a lot of work, but unless you can work on those accounts it isn't much of a help.  I had 3 accounts and with the rare exception of when there was a 2-week period of OT available, I was only getting maximum of 18 hours week.  I attempted working during all 3 shifts, working my days off and still couldn't get in my hours/lines.  I asked for more accounts, I was willing and able to work, the quality of my work was excellent and I received multiple e-mails from my STM stating how pleased they were with my work, so the excuse that I just couldn't cut it is BULL.

I don't know what the work load is like since I left, but I do know what it was like when I was there and there just wasn't work on my 3 accounts and anyone could see the numbers on the updates and see there were accounts that had tons of work, but there were many accounts with low numbers too.  We were also told that under no circumstances would we be paid for downtime.

My current company has had some days where work may not have been available on your shift to complete your line committment, but they pay us for any downtime and we don't have to worry about trying to make it up on a different shift or our days off.  The pay is probably less than what we would make transcribing, but is a generous amount.

I have worked for companies that were much worse than WMX, but currently work for one much better.   When someone asks how things are there I am honest in my assessment as I see them, but usually get negative posts in return about how I'm not willing to take on more accounts and my work isn't good enough, etc.  That is all BULL.

If anyone goes back and read the archives there are many similar posts to mine that were not made by me.

If you have lots of work, have a good STM, and are happy well I'm happy for you, but because someone else has a different story doesn't mean they are a bitter ex-employee who just couldn't cut it.
