This is a scam - they don't hire newbies.nm

Any companies hire newbies? I'm a CMT who
works for a company that had a mentoring program and hired newbies.  Had a very smart young girl ask me about getting into MT and told her the company I worked for had a mentoring program.   She purchased Career Step six months ago but did not buy the program with the job placement as both of us felt she could get accepting into the mentoring program; however, she just now graduated and I just found out our company has abandoned their mentorship program.  I feel really bad now because I don't know of any other companies that hire newbies.  Do any of you know of any?  I think this girl really has potential.
Yup, especially the companies that hire newbies, but
they are slowly starting to have Vista use.
If you are just out of school I really don't think they hire newbies
.
does Axolotl hire newbies do you think?

Because that sounds great!! I just graduated a Big 3 school. I will definitely check them out!!! Thank you!!  : )

They don't hire newbies. They require
at least 3 years experience. Their QA is tough, but I've learned a lot from them. Once you have the experience under your belt, this is THE company to work for IMHO.
Any companies who hire newbies?

MQ will hire newbies from "approved schools", what are they? sm

I am considering going through a community college that has a 100 hour internship program at the end.  I want to know if this will be enough to hire on as a trainee with them.

Is it just Career Step they approve of?  Anyone know?

I don't know firsthand if they hire newbies but I agree

Try Breitner in Maine they hire newbies all the time.

Are there any companies besides Amphion that hire part-time

I need a company that allows you to make your lines without demanding that you be on from this second to that second.  If it's part-time it's obviously because you have other things to do and your life doesn't revolve around a set schedule.  If I can get my work done at 3AM so why would that bother anybody?

Is there a company that doesn't mind when you work as long as you meet your quota and are accurate?

Where did she get her education?
Where did she go to school and why aren't they stepping up and doing the right thing? If a school takes someone's dough, they owe them some placement assistance.....
continuing education
Spending all of your vacation time and time off working on continuing education credits?  WOW, that has not been my experience at all.  It is not that time consuming to get your credits.  You have 3 years to get your credits in and if you do it a little at a time within those 3 years, I don't find it very time consuming at all.  I think if you wait until the last possible moment, as in procrastination, then it would be a pain to have to go into panic mode to get your credits in a short time, but if you keep up with it every year and do a little here and there, it certainly is not a big deal and usually enjoyable (I love to learn!).
Do you have any transcription education?
You say you have a degree in English and Communication Arts, but dont mention any medical transcription education. This is a very specialized field and without the proper training is very hard. There is a lot of formatting aspects that is not even covered in English education.

The only thing you can really do is do research on here about a company and ask questions before taking the position. This is with any job that you take whether transcription or not.

Wish you luck.
that's nooooot education.. lol
I agree that what you say could be true, a feeling many of us have about many of those companies; but that's only an opinion based on observations, and you can bet the ad lister has a different one...and is the very method most often used to manage in this industry. big decisions get made on someone's whim, and then 100,000 others live like it's the truth..  it seems like it is why people here argue so uch.. ; people keep confusing the thoughts and opinoins as the truth and then argue madly to be right.  it's kuckooo. that note took me about an hour to write because i am so tired i am nodding off every other word.  i agree with educate thyself, but i'd caution that has not taken place here.   i suppose they could be very ineffective and inefficient recruiters as well. and likely much more.  i must be gone now. i hope i finished a few sentences..
your lack of education
with regard to the profession and how businesses are run seems to make it difficult for you to understand the big picture here.

I've been in this field for a very long time and it's people who think screw the rest, I'm in it for me (this is the impression I take away from your responses) that have made it possible for a service owner (a position I also once held) to offer crap pay, no benefits, high expectations.

If you are an IC and allow yourself to be treated as an employee, you can also be creating issues with the IRS, and if your employer is found to be using ICs as employees and not paying appropriately, they can incur significant fines.

Downside is, yes, an MTSO then has the right to decline to employ you. But if MTs would refuse this type of treatment, the offers might be more in line with what's a fair earned wage.

Yes, but we need to be PAID according to our education
It is theft of services in my opinion to perform the same job - using our same knowledge and experience, mind you - takes just as long, if not longer, to edit a VR report than a typed report. We use the same knowledge base that WE have paid for ourselves that these companies now want to pay us half for.

Just because a lawyer's office did away with human secretaries, do you think they would cut the charge for their services (knowledge AND education) in half as we are expected to do with VR?

This is the only industry where they think they don't have to pay for our knowledge base. They want to pick our brains to train the damned machines and then cut our salary so THEY can put more money in their greedy pockets.

That is the bottom line.
Education. Think that I could get a job teaching and
Or at least partial forgiveness if I don't get a very high paying job at first. A dream of mine and the gov't is encouraging with loans and grants, so I decided to go for it. It will be hard work studying but then again it will help make ends meet and I will have a future, rather than sitting and feeling sorry for myself as an MT like do lately. Thanks for asking.
Education doesn't matter in MT because it's become
It's better to get a bachelor's degree. It goes much further than an MT certificate or an associate's. You get what you pay for.

Yes, I remember making 11-12 cents a line back in the early 1990s when this industry started going into the home, but those days are long gone. Time to regroup and think of something better to do for a living before we're making less than the 16-year-olds at Dairy Queen because, believe me, there will always be desperate poor people who will work for peanuts be it on American soil or elsewhere.

This industry is fast on its way to hell in a handbasket.
I'm an MT with an excellent education, experience in
sterling references.  Spheris did offer me a position at a $hitty rate and when the recruiter started to talk account details (covering many accounts, absurd schedule - THEY assigned me F-M middle of the night and COMPLETE INFLEXIBILITY AND UNWILLINGNESS TO DISCUSS ANYTHING OTHER THAN THEIR AGENDA), I immediately moved on.  It took me about a second to find a job that paid almost 3 cpl more than them, was able to negotiate the worktype (OP notes) I wanted and a schedule that worked for both of us.   I have been happily working my tail off for this employer to be sure that the dregs of world like Spheris stays in their pit.  MTs working for them hurt other MTs by going along with their nonsense.
There are better MT education programs out there (M-Tec and Andrews) but
CS does have segment of their program that Spheris is involved with. However, my understanding is starting pay for newbies at Spheris is low, even by today's standards.

My suggestion would be to check out other schooling options and other companies to work for before taking the leap. Do some searching of the archives here for more info both on schools and employers. (Also, you should be aware that CS has an affiliate program where people make money by getting others to sign up for their course so you may want to take any rave reviews with a grain of salt.)
NO! For 25 years of acute care exp and exc education

completely.  It was their way or the highway.  It took me about 2 minutes to get a job that paid 3 cpl more with very, very flexible scheduling.  Their flexibility and pay bought them an accurate, high-production MT that is 100% reliable and accountable.

Also, as time goes on, Spheris' benefits have eroded.  I believe they eliminated PTO for PT.   There is no question in my mind that more and more will be taken away and pretty soon their MTs will be working for crap, have high insurance premiums, PTO and holiday time cut.

BTW, the suits are gorging themselves on huge profits while MTs, the ones that make this all happen, get the shaft.  There is no doubt in my mind that there is a suit in one of their swank offices who does nothing but figure out how to reduce/eliminate MT costs (and likely get a huge bonus for screwing MTs for the benefit of executives).

Kind of like an education at liberal arts college...
is it necessary that I know Henry Moore is a sculptor in order to get my Bachelor's degree in Science? No...just makes me a more well-rounded individual (and NO, not my shape!). Hahaha
Current Amphion employee...I'm very happy. The part of Amphion I work with has no faxes, lists,s
minor demographic work..superb QA and feedback.  Fellow MTs on same account are more than willing to help and now they also have mentor program.  My pay is what they said.  They do have different pay for different levels.
Me too. As soon as there is a little extra work they hire and hire and then noone has any. This
goes on all the time.  I get sick to death of it.  I think having 2 part time jobs is better so you have 2 jobs to count on.
MQ newbies
Sorry, dear, no matter what you say, you lack experience. Therefore you may have been good in school, but how do you rate in the real world?
Newbies
I'm currently teaching a MT class at a local community college and was wondering what companies hire newbies.  Thanks.
Hey, Newbies at TT...

I got a call from TT yesterday.  Was working and will call back today.  Just wanted to touch base with some of yall to see how you all are doing and if you felt your decision was a good one.

Take care, will keep you posted.

OSi is for newbies
OSi has a mentor program for newbies because that is basically what their company is made up of. Unless you wanted to be spied on with their very own instant message program - where they will call you if they don't see you on line - and also they record Keystrokes and treat you like you are 2 years old, you don't want to work for OSi. They also call you on your days off to work but you aren't allowed to claim it on your time sheet. In other words they want you to work OT but not record your hours to do so. Also a very demeaning QA department. QA is very inconsistent because QA consists of newbies itself and half the time their edits are wrong. You will get emails from QA audits with stupid graphics with (good job) and stuff for toddlers and all of this coming from newbie MTs who happened to end up in QA dept. Mature people would not put junk like that in a business email or any email for that matter. Very poorly run company who recently partnered with a company with multiple offshore interests. OSi already offshored the easy work and with the new partner it is likely to offshore even more. Bad news unless you are just starting out MT'ing. Also they have just stopped paying any extra cents per line on holidays unless you meet almost impossible requirements. That was the last straw for me. I could not make it to even 1 year with OSi and because I saw the light I can actually spend the holidays with my family now because I got out in time. Never have I seen a company run in such a horrible manner as OSi. They offer a ridiculous sign on bonus because most people don't last long enough to even receive it. Go elsewhere, almost anyplace is better.
M-TEC Newbies On the Way?
So what will happen when they guarantee those people coming out of M-Tec a job at lower rates?
newbies and QA....sm
You have to differ between work done by US newbies and Indian newbies. If the QAing of the work your newbies are producing and you have to QA is so bad, I am sure that you are QAing work that has been done by offshored MTs.
Any advice for newbies?
I've checked the job bank and everyone wants experience. Will anyone hire students? I'm finishing up an 18-month course with M-TEC. I've been sending resumes regardless of experience required.
hiring newbies
Hello,

I just read your post and I do not agree with you. I am a newbie who was hired by MQ to do the big hospitals and I am good. I just quit MQ because the QA was lousy and I had to jump from account to account. Then, on many ocassions I had no work available when I logged onto my shift. I respect your experience, but I know my quality is good because I graduated from the TOP school in the industry that demands it. Please don't lump all newbies together and do not blame it on JUST newbies. Thank goodness I took my NEW self and sloppy QA some where else.
Who hires newbies?

work at home only.

Hiring newbies?
Are there any companies out there that hire newbies? Looking for an acquaintance.
Some newbies have to accept 6 cpl unfortunately - any sm
other experiences with Shapin? Thanx.
Hires newbies
Allegiant and Sound Medical Transcription.  Both are very nice owners/companies to work for/with.  Good luck!
OSi is geared for newbies
It overall is especially good for newbies and has excellent mentor program. There is a massive amount of turnover with this company as those with a lot of experience don't tend to stick around, however it is probably the best bet for someone starting out. They can gain some good experience and training and then move on to a better company with better management, etc.
keystrokes newbies

please tell us how it is going so far

Not all newbies are that ignorant!
Those that have come from reputable schools have the reference books they need when they start out and know how to use them. When I was a newbie a couple years ago fresh out of M-TEC, I was off QA within a month. I have never received a QA score lower than a 98%. That's because I know how to use my references, take the time to do it, and leave a blank rather than guess. Not all newbies are naive enough to think the internet is reliable or are too cheap to invest in a good reference library.
Oh yea OSI newbies are promoted to QA too!!!
Seeing is believing.
OSI is best for newbies or those with NO self-esteem
.
Try OSi...they have a program for newbies
xyxy
OSI is best for newbies, not experienced MTs
.
Is there any 1 year or so newbies out there?
The reason I ask is because I am just graduating and am looking for people who have recent feedback on companies to work for. Who is good with newbies, as far as QA help, answering questions, being patient while you are learning everything, etc? Some of these platforms can be confusing?!  And then the account specifics, please tell me it gets easier!!?? Also, do you know which ones give you specific accounts to work on, at least until you get a little experience under your belt? Thanks for any info!
info for newbies
I was looking for job listings in my local newspaper (online) and there was 1 ad for Transam Associates.  They are apparently in many cities across the US and when I went to their web site, it says they train newbies for free.  Just thought I would mention this so anyone who is interested could check it out.  They have a sample dictation on their site that you listen to and then send it in an email, or you they say you can send a sample of your recent work in an email.  Dictation is computer-generated, very easy, about 30 seconds long.  I have 27 years experience, so I was not interested in this company, but thought some of you out there might be.
yep and the newbies haven't ever sm
been around or worked in MT long enough to make any real money! If they had been in this business long enough this wouldn't even be an issue. They are going to eventually be losing their jobs just like everybody else.

Personally, even with VR being so popular, I still stay there are good jobs (maybe not as many) out there for GREAT experienced MTs! You have to look hard and long for them but they are there.

I feel sorry for these newbies who don't know the way it can be for a good MT or the way it was or whatever. That's why they want to argue. This is all they know. We know what the money use to be like and what it can be like if you look long enough now. I sure would rather do 300 lph even at 8 cpl than even 600 lph at even 5 cpl (which most aren't making 5 cpl). I cannot imagine anything more boring or counter productive than VR! VR is just another way for these folks to totally forget that there is a patient behind the report and just reduce all this to lines and filling in blanks, no real knowledge.
No I don't tell newbies to google, I sm
tell them to look it up in their REFERENCE library. No one wants to do that anymore. Kind of like learning to use a calculator but never learning to do the math yourself!
I would recommend it to newbies. Just not for us
