I went back and re-read the original poster's message.  It did not exactly refer to only IC, could have been an employee.  At that point, in such a situation, I suggest to apply for partial unemployment benefits while looking for additional work.  No, don't wait around for a fence to paint.  In this industry, it seems that companies have no qualms about overhiring, whether you are an employee or an IC, and your first loyalty in business should be to yourself.  After all, this is not a charity project.

It is a shame that MTs, both employees and ICs, do allow themselves to be used like part of the equipment, waiting around, not requiring an entire fence, but settling for an occasional gate or slat.  MTs who do this are training these companies how to treat all of us.
