I have worked in health care my entire working life (over 30 years).  It is to be expected that patients have to be cared for 24/7.  That includes all services.  I've been called during snowstorms and power failures to come into work because of the work load increase.  I've worked to cover vacations for others, knowing that during my vacation time, they would do the same.  Transcription is no different.  When the hospital staff doesn't come in or there's an increase in dictations, for whatever reason, the overflow work gets sent to the service, that's why they contract with an outside service.  I don't mind calls on my day off.  If I don't have anything to do, I'll help out.  If I do, then I will have to decline.  If I had expected to work 9-5 and perfect hours, I'd work in a bank.
