is she making her time up or volunteering to come in on her normal days off to help out when the kids are not running her? It all depends on the situation. I try very hard to keep to my schedule, but it is very difficult when kids have a lot going on in their lives. My kids are 15 and 16 so I keep them busy to keep them out of trouble and to try to have an outlet for all of their emotions from losing their dad a little under 2 years ago. Maybe your friend should try and talk with the employee. She may be going through something herself, may not realize how much time she is actually taking off, or she may even be abusing the situation. Being guilty of all of these myself, sometimes it just takes talking to the person.
Your friend also must realize she is the supervisor, and she must do what is best for her, depending on her company. There are many different choices other than firing the employee, maybe even suggesting part-time or something for awhile. Hope she resolves this soon, it must really be bothering her. She sounds like a thoughtful person if she is this upset and is asking advice about having to speak with the employee.
