We have already cut back to bare bones
Luckily I was accepted to go back to school for my Master's so I have loan money coming in soon. This will help make ends meet and more, but it scares me to take out so much money only to come due in 3 to 5 years when I am finished with my studies. What keeps me going is that I will have a new career, even when I am in my 50s, where I don't have to scrape anymore. I just have to decide whether it is worth the hassle worrying with this VR paycut or take another job straight typing while I study. Going back to school won't be easy, but it will be better than worrying all the time about the future... Thanks for your feedback!
Bayscribe is a bare bones method
and while it is easy it is really more cheap than MT friendly. I found the spellchecker nonexistent. You have to have some bells and whistles and is there anything more important to an MT than correctly spelled content? I used SpeedType with it and the lousy dictionary and no spellchecker drove me crazy. One opinion. I far prefer a more traditional transcription package .. there are no bargains!
Horrible spell check, had to C&P onto word doc. to use spell checker. Slow, used ADT which did not

Bare minimum? I make over $50,000 a year in 40 hours a week. That is not bare minimum. sm
Bare minimum would be $8 an hour which is $16,640 a year or $10 an hour which is $20,800 a year. I make more than twice that and that is NOT bare minimum.
I worked to get my typing speed to 80 wpm. I worked to get my Expanders user-friendly and plentiful. I am not the fastest because I look up what I do not know, but I am lucky to have a very good memory so if I type it a few times, I do not have to look it up. I keep notes when I run across something I do not know. I am interested in my profession and read the magazines for our profession and network with other transcriptionists during my free time, devoting a minimum of 2 hours per week to networking and learning new things.
I am not the fastest MT, but I am accurate and boiled it down to simple math. I need to transcribe 250 lines per hour for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. At 10cpl, that is 2000 lines a day x 5 days per week x 50 weeks per year. I take 2 weeks off per year during July to visit my grandchildren (unpaid), 1 week a year to vacation with my husband (paid) and 1 week a year to spring clean (paid). I have worked for the same company for 4 years and 8 years for the one before this.
I treat my work hours as work hours and take 1/2 hour for lunch which I do not include in my 8 hours. I pretend that I am working outside the home and do not answer the door, get the mail, do laundry, etc. If I have a good day and go over the 2000, I bank it in my mind for days that are not as good and make sure that I get 10,000 lines each week.
My W2 each year is consistently $50,000. A few years it was higher, but I worked a few weekends, which I no longer do.
It IS possible.
No, that's what spell check is for. nm

I don’t have to spell check here
and I was showing what I find, did you not read my posting about what I found in the neurologist's office, a sign spelled sureries.. I am not perfect, did not say that. You should edit yourself.
spell check is not, that is why I said you have to know how to look things up.
Knowing how to spell or thinking you know how to spell a word is not enough.
Good grief. Read everything.
Can you comprehend
please spell check before you post
advice is with a C.. NOT an S
I think spell check, proofing and the sm
other things you mentioned are a given for the job. When I say proofread, I mean type a report, then go back and proof, not proof as you go. I am sure we all do that.
Everyone, regardless of what they are paid, should spell check, know their accounts, know grammar and punctuation usage, etc.
I am sure many would lose money if paid hourly, sounds like you are doing well, good for you! If I had the attention span I am sure I could make what you make. I should make that my goal this year. However, how many times on these boards have you read that I am only making $3 an hour. I have read that more than I have read that people are making what you make.
What about your benefits? Do you have retirement with matching contribution from your company? Do you have health insurance, dental, vision, etc, paid for by your company (or at least sharing the cost). Do you have paid days off? Please, I would really like to know. If I am making $30k a year with the above benefits, essentially I am almost making what you make with my benefits, wouldn't you think? I would have to run some numbers, but I think we would come very close in salary.
Also, depending on where you live, $30k can be good money. If you live in Hawaii, which is the most expensive state to live, $30k might not get you far, however, if you live in Missouri, $30k might be great money. Let's face it, $50k is not that great if you live in downtown Manhattan.
So, we throw in something else to think about, cost of living. Since an MTSO generally hires nationwide, is the cost of living of your employee a factor in what you pay?
I would think that the way an MTSO pays is generally driven by being competitive with the next company (our prices are lower)not necessarily based on cost of living or taking into consideration the education and experience of the people they are going to hire.
I agree, it's not the greatest, and I'm only saying that because of the spell check -sm
You don't have to do a lot of nonsense just to get started like you do if you're working with Lanier or Dictaphone. The only thing you have to take note of is your job#. And that you don't even have to if you don't want to, but it's recommended and I do it.
I personally count the lines myself and have found them to be 100% accurate. Of course these programs can vary, but the one I'm using is a good one and they're exact or, if anything, a little higher. I know I'm not getting cheated.
Hope that helps.
I am sorry. I was going to thank you for paying attention and doing a spell check.
Thanks

Is there a medical spell check built in their software? n/m

Similar to DocQScribe, expansions go in auto-correct, horrible spell-check. nm

You've obviously never had bare cupboards.
They make no bones about sending to India
There was an article here in the Atlanta Journal/Constitution and talking about the top companies in Georgia- Transcend being 1 of those. They made it very clear that they sent work to India, said not enough MTs here to handle their work. I read it personally and saved the article for awhile. I wish I still had- I would put on here word for word but that was last year. I could not believe when I read not enough when I see Transcend people running out of work.
Saw the ad for Molave - made no bones about it being Asian work you are editing. nm

That's a cross to bear with most co's...sm
This demographic BS, looking up Dr's names, addresses, CCs aud nauseum, etc, etc, is just another sample of MT exploitation we have to deal with these MTSOs, and they practically all do it....ironically, it's the demos/unpaid duties that QA gives you the most flack about. (The client wants it just so ....if he wants it just so...means client is paying for this service, while we get to do it GRATIS. They really think we're that dumb ,not to know the difference between paid work and voluntary work, our our gift to their stockholders.
You also need to bear in mind that
even though the new job says they have more than enough work to keep you busy, that might not be the case. It has been my experience that rarely is it true these days that the work is bountiful and abundant ANYWHERE. That's why so many of us juggle 2, 3, and 4 part-time gigs. You really should try to hang onto both till you know for certain.
I know how to spell, but you dont have to know how to spell so much
as how to look things up.
Why are you cutting on me? I know how to spell. I won my school spelling bee and went to state.
The poster above me was putting people down that cant spell.
You can work at McDonald's but I am doing fine with what I am doing.
Thanks anyway for your wonderful advice but i dont need it
u r right, they are a bear to get: LINE THIEVES
The overtime is offered to make up for the lines they steal on some accounts trying to entice people to stay I guess. Forget it.
Please just bear with us a while. Lots of new hires (sm)
who have lots of questions and this will calm down soon.
Kind of happens anytime a company starts a new account or hires on a lot for whatever reason.
"if you can't bear that, find another job".

Isn't Bear-Stearns, who is in money trouble this a.m,

Thanks for the advice about reading further down, but I couldn't bear
to read any further than I unfortunately did. Yes, GB and Cindy MT have a right to their opinion but this thread went beyond that to down right vindictive, mean and angry. All I meant is we all don't need to read this kind of stuff right now with the way things are. One size doesn't fit all, so if it doesn't fit, move on. The kind of anger displayed in this thread can only be destructive and not a benefit to anyone. Obviously, there are some happy at TT or they would be out of business, as with MQ and other MTSOs. This post went way beyond opinions, at least constructively!
somebody must be taking it or it wouldn't be offered - whatever the market will bear, ya know--

Maybe their line rate was low because you couldn't type well. It is atrocious
does anybody know how to spell redundent
?
Who cannot spell the word anything.
The word anything is a no brainer. Boy, you're sure a little high on the horse, huh? I'm not the OP, but where's the support here ?????? Cut the OP a break. She's venting! Oh, you must be QA.........
Can you spell audit?
They may not pay you a visit by ringing the doorbell but they can audit you and this encompasses 3 years of returns and you better have each and every receipt for each and every item you claim. It is not a pretty picture at an audit and can cost you dearly.
Well, you did spell Axolotl right, but.....(sm)

Too bad you can't spell it, jeAlousy.

You need to LEARN to spell....
Don't you think?
No wonder! This company cannot spell they.
He or she probably couldn't pass their own test.
Guess I need to spell it out
I didn't say VR was a disaster. I said rushing through to meet some arbitrary goal of minutes mixed with the VR requirements is a recipe for disaster. I've seen what this hospital puts out and they do indeed miss important things that should be fixed and aren't.
Does background check include credit check?
An editor who can't spell misspelled..lol

Can't even spell the names of your accounts
