sternocleidomastoid and cholecystectomy are spelled the same way today as they were 35 years ago. A newbie can be just as capable of spelling these words as someone who's been in the business for 30 years. There are up-to-date reference books for medications, surgical equipment and various specialities and newbies are just as capable at using them as someone who's been in the business for 30 years. Newbies can be just as capable at discerning ESLs dictations as someone who has been in the business for 30 years. This is a knack/gift/talent, not something you have to train for, and it improves with time. The only difference is that a newbie may have to do more research and relisten more times than someone who's been in the business for 30 years. The work is the same for both. In fact, it is the newbies who should be complaining. They put in far more time and effort than an oldie, for even less money. Both a newbie and an oldie have to transcribe ESLs, they can put in the same amount of hours and they have the same frustrations, aches and pains. They are both expected to put out quality reports with very few blanks. Same job should equal same pay and that pay should be decent for both. Some of these companies don't care how many years you have under your belt, only that you produce in the expected amount of time the expected amount of lines and the ones who do expect years are still not offering any more money. It's all about production. It does hurt everyone when someone accepts a low rate for lines but newbies are interested in getting started and that's what they'll do but to complain that you don't make more than a newbie is insulting to those newbies who are capable of doing their job just as well as the oldies, IMHO.
